Prosperity gospel is basically a bastardization of Christian doctrine that encourages a belief set that’s basically “if I’m well off that’s God’s Plan and the better I believe the more God with give me”, it’s really big with megachurch freaks and other off-the-rails protestants and there’s a lot of unspoken assumption baked in that poverty is a divine punishment. All the bible verses are like, Jesus saying rich people can’t go to heaven and that sort of thing.

fun thing about king James, this guy was fairly public about his bf (more public than what was acceptable). He threw lots of extravagant parties with his man on his arm. It pissed off the church obviously so to get them off his back, he’s the one that ordered the third translation of the Bible from Hebrew to English (the King James Version aka the Authorized Version) so the Bible every hot blooded all American Christian reads today was literally just written so a very gay king could fuck his boyfriend in peace.

IDK if u meant to attribute Jeffrey Gorsky as translating this (he’s slightly off) but he didn’t write this, he even attributes the original in his book. 

This is the original text and it reads (at least in my translation),  If the son of ‘Amram [Moses] had seen the face of my beloved, his ringlets, and his gloriously beautiful face blushing whilst imbibing alcohol, he would not have written in his Torah, “…and with a man” [which obvsly refers to Wayiqra 18:6] This poem was recorded by Yehuda al-Ḥarizi in his work, תחכמוני, allegedly in Baghdad (x). (The Andalusian poet traveled quite frequently.)

imo Jesus’ attitude towards Samaritans and his desire to overcome the long schism between Jews and Samaritans was one of his most radical ideas within his actual historical and social context but the fact that it doesnt really translate too much into later Christian contexts means it gets watered down into “be nice to strangers!” moral which is a completely different thing and yet the fact that the canonical New Testament still covers Jesus’ relationship with the Samaritans despite its lack of relatability to Christians living outside Judea shows to me that it was a highly important and central aspect of his movement

i find it so odd how jesus’ cry of “my god, my god, why have you forsaken me?” has been sidelined or ignored (in my personal context ofc); so many christians I have come across are completely unaware that line even exists within the gospel.

why is this the case? perhaps it is because only john is typically read for the passion narrative? though i suspect that the real reason is because jesus’ outcry interrupts a lot of theological understandings. it annoys me the way clergy try to “get around” that line by simply saying “oh it’s just a reference to psalm 22. a fulfillment of prophecy” and leave it at that. why is it so hard to acknowledge that when jesus was on that cross he felt truly abandoned? that even in the midst of his sacrifice, jesus christ doubted? to disregard the idea that jesus felt hopelessness is to ignore the fact that he was human.
