Sometimes I write things to get other things off my chest and out of my head.

i used to daydream about all the ways i wish we’d fallen in love;

we’d reach for the same mug and our hands would meet and then our eyes and our smiles and our lives would be entwined through one small coincidence. i loved the idea of serendipity before i could even accurately define the word.

we’d run into each other with the same kind of significance of particles colliding in the LHC. you’d spill hot coffee down my white shirt but the pain would be secondary to the burning of your hands as they tried to put out the fire you started in my chest. i could have told you then and there that it would never work but i loved that you tried anyway.

we’d see each other across a crowded room and the world would pause like it does in the movies, breathless, shaken to its metallic core. time would stutter, a breath and then two. when the word resumed we’d have met in the middle. i loved the idea that ours was a love even physics must bow to.

i used to daydream about all the ways i wish we’d fallen in love and none of them ever had me falling alone, but i spent my time loving an idea, and you spent yours loving a reality that didn’t include me.
