Новий український (The New Ukrainian). My first new work of 2023. I started, and later abandoned, this illustration when the Russian war on Ukraine began. Displaced Ukrainians struggle to survive. The trauma of war re-emerges in a new and disastrous form. These horrors terrorise those who’ve survived WWII again, which also now stain the hearts of younger generations. As difficult as it was to illustrate this subject matter, I’m glad I finished it. I’m the first born American in my family, and my grandparents are from both sides of these fighting counties, Poland, Ukraine, and Belarus. Each have fled to the US and Canada post war for a better life. Still, I’m removed from my grandparents’ experiences, and I’ve felt disconnected from what is happening in Eastern Europe. Working through this quarantine by making illustrations. This is my take on an #alebrije, a fantastical creature in Mexian lore that takes the shape of a #dragon or #spiritanimal.

Alebrijes appeared to famous Mexican artist, Perdro Linares (1906 - 1992), in a feverish dream. He then made these creatures out of papier-mâché and the folklore soon spread throughout Mexico. Today, alebrijes are made out of various materials and are especially popular as colorfully painted woodcarvings in Oaxaca, a state and city in southern Mexico.

The tradition of papier-mâché alebrijes are carried on by maestro, Joel Garcia, in Mexico City. He lived and studied under Linares for years in the barrio, starting at the age of 18. Almost 50 years later, his alebrijes live in public and private collections throughout the U.S. and Mexico. I had the great pleasure of closely working with Joel in 2014 and getting to know his work evolve over the years.

HERE YE HERE YE!!!! After too long of neglect because life, work, and everything in between, I am finally in the process of making prints of my Victorian Velociraptor with Violets! I honestly still can’t believe that this piece has gotten so much attention and I thank you all sooo much for your support and your patience with all this. 

I should be getting a proof of the print sometime this week for quality inspection. I don’t want to half-ass it. I am looking into having it printed on archival artist paper. 

Each print will be signed by me, as shown in the example. I have seen some copycats making their own versions of this, so I thought that I’d jump in on this and provide the real thing to you all. Once I get my first 50 prints, I will share with you the link to my online store!!
