oneshots:
be my baby (i'll look after you) - oneshot, 4.2k words
will doesn't know what is going on with his body, but he knows something isn't right. mack knows right away what's happening. will, the caretaker of the two, lets himself be taken care of for once.
or,
will gets a migraine and mack knows how to help.
avalanche - oneshot, 3.3k words
Macklin doesn’t think he’s ever been so furious in his life. How could they go from beating the Avs less than a month ago to getting completely shutout? How could the entire team act like they’ve never seen a hockey puck in their lives before? And how the fuck could he be tapped for media after such a blowout instead of one of the fucking vets, someone who was actually wearing the A on their chest tonight? Why was it always him?
or,
the sharks lose 6-0 to the avalanche. will keeps him from falling apart.
aftermath - oneshot, 3k words
Macklin has played enough hockey to know not to go into a game looking for a fight, but he’s always prided himself in standing up for his teammates. He’s been in his fair share of scrums, pushing back when opposing players get a little too rough with his guys or take a cheap shot at him, but he’s never actually thrown a punch in a game. He’d do it for any of his friends, really.
It just happens that his first real fight is because of Will.
or,
will gets hurt during the pens game and mack takes care of him (based on the events of december 13, 2025)
silver and gold - oneshot, 3k words
team canada falls to the us in the gold medal game at the 2026 olympics. mack takes it hard, but he has people who love him.
how to live - oneshot, 7.8k words
It’s not a responsibility that Will takes lightly. And yeah, sometimes it can be overwhelming, how much Mack trusts him to just be there and take over when he forgets how to feel things. But Will knows how hard it is for Mack to even get to the point of trusting someone that much, so he chooses to see it as a blessing rather than a burden. He knows, deep down, that he would move heaven and Earth for Mack if that’s what he needs to keep his feet on the ground instead of spinning out.
or,
mack struggles on a roadtrip (including the cherny concussion, motioning for will to come down the bench to sit next to him, and one hockey stick sacrificed to a macklin crashout)
lightly inspired by del water gap's how to live, heavily inspired by the 7-4 loss to the ottawa senators on march 15, 2026
good as gold - oneshot, 5.2k words, part 2 of silver and gold
“Mack?” he asks, voice scratchy. If Mack wasn’t in the middle of losing his goddamn mind, he would probably register the six-hour time difference between them. As it is, though, there’s a shuffle, then soft light illuminating Will’s face and making the bags under his eyes more exaggerated than they should be. Will blinks at the sudden change in visibility caused by the little lamp on the bedside table. “Mackie?”
Mack realizes he hasn’t said anything yet, but his throat feels tight and it’s hard to make his tongue form the sounds he wants it to. He swallows hard and hopes Will understands what he’s trying his best to say but just– can’t.
“Hey,” Will’s voice comes through again, infinitely softer. He watches as Will takes a sip of water from the bottle he always keeps on his side of the bed at home in California. It’s familiar. It’s comforting. “You’re okay, babe. Look, I’m right here, you’re good.”
or,
mack goes to europe for worlds and the feelings from milan resurface. will keeps him afloat like he always does. (rigney smith is a main character and it's very cute if i do say so myself)
