this is a blog where you can come in and share anything that you think fits into the “culture” of adhd.

what is the culture of adhd?

this is a broad disorder, and as a community it is even broader.

i am not a professional by any means, just an enthusiastic person, and for this reason i want you when in this blog to not fuss much over diagnostics, what qualifies, what is or is not adhd. because that’s not what culture means.

the “culture” of adhd is about being able to feel better about yourself, your struggles, or your best moments with the information that the adhd community (and the broader theory of neurodiversity) gives you: shared experience.

you don’t have to be 100% confident that you belong in the club to hang out. you don’t have to think you belong at all. because we can all get something out of it!

what can i send as “adhd culture?”

mostly anything you want, so long as it starts with “adhd culture is.” but it can also be more specific, such as “black adhd culture is” or “gay adhd culture is.”

post things that you’re comfortable with a few dozen people or more reading. i attempt to moderate and tag with the best of my ability.

what can i send as “ask adhd?”

again, mostly anything you want!

advice, silly questions, things that aren’t even related to adhd at all! if it doesn’t fit the blog, it won’t be seen anyway (and i promise not to judge).

it’s important to remember that i am not a professional, and there’s a lot i don’t know about adhd especially when it comes to diagnosis. this blog is not focused on that side of the discussion, simply because it’s not the best place for it.

i can’t answer questions about diagnosis (or similar topics) besides the bare basics.

i don’t really like the nature of dni’s for a variety of reasons. rest assured that if i do not want something interacting with this blog, i’ll ensure to the best of my ability that it doesn’t.

Not a culture but a question.

How does hyperactivity (mental and physical) feel like for you ?

ignore how long it took me to get to this question…

hyperactivity isn’t really a feeling to me because i’m only ever aware of it if i haven’t been fulfilling my activity needs. aka, i’ve been sitting still for too long or doing the same thing for too long, and i need to do something different Right Now.

just like any other bodily need, it’s a slow build-up of this that at first i easily bury under other sources of attention… but slowly it gets louder and louder until it’s the only thing i can think about.

that’s the thing though, during these moments i wouldn’t describe myself as “hyperactive” because in fact the feeling is caused by the opposite (the lack of activity). i might be fidgety or inattentive on the outside, but if i was actually moving around then i wouldn’t feel anything at all. if i look hyperactive, that probably just means that i’m regulated (and i happen to have high activity needs at that moment)

Autistic ADHD culture is hyper-fixating on rocks and minerals for hours and at 3am you rise up from your resting place and start moving around the house because you can’t sleep at all, despite knowing that you’re going to probably regret it hours later… And then you decide to reorganize your room because why not.

a lot of ADHD behaviours and barriers feel like sims logic playing out in real time like i did my laundry but i had to pee and sleep so i stopped and i haven’t folded it yet except i can’t fold it yet because i need to eat but i can’t eat because the laundry basket is in front of the fridge. someone keeps queuing actions but they’re getting cancelled

this is what executive dysfunction broadly refers to btw, despite popular belief executive function is not just the starting of a task but all of the complex planning in executing one start to finish.

anything that has to do with goal-directed behavior, like planning, attention control, etc can be disabled by executive dysfunction. in a way a Sim is a great example of executive dysfunction because it’s not like you’re unable to perform any individual step of the task, rather it’s the larger decision-making process that takes you from step to step that is difficult — sims are easily distractible and require specific circumstances in order to do something correctly (no physical obstructions, etc) which are the same challenges that we face when completing a complex task!

ADHD culture is being medicated but having the side effect of not wanting to eat so your doctor recommends that you eat more even though you physically feel like you’re full after two or three bites

i definitely relate to this one a lot, a lot of adhd medications are appetite suppressants and i noticed when i started taking mine that i had a lot less appetite.

if you take medication and don’t eat as much as you’re used to, it’s always worth keeping track of so long as you keep a healthy perspective on it. for most people the effect isn’t that bad, but you might need to make your nutritional choices more intentionally (focusing on calorically and nutritionally dense food when you are hungry so that you get enough in the day — listen to your cravings, i’ve been crazy for sugar since medicating)

in my case i just started weighing myself every once in a while to make sure i wasn’t losing weight. even if you think you “should” lose weight, losing it due to a medication side effect can be a sign that you’re not getting the nutrients you need, not that you’re getting healthier.

What do you mean I can hyperfixate and memorize facts about the French Revolution and Marie Antoinette (or whatever interest I currently have) that I will never need for anyting, ever, but then my room remains uncleaned for a few weeks because staying organized is HARD???

ADHD culture is realising you're disabled and hating this about you. I'd like to have a birthday party, but I seemed to be incapable to coordinate multiples individus (three...That's not much) to find a date place and hour. I never thought of this the inhability of planning things so simple as a disabillity. But that's when my mom told me that she could do what I couldn't that I realised...This is way harder than it should be.

I cannot describe the shame that come with this realisation.
