why ppl leave things in jesus hands knowing he got holes in them, is beyond me
do u have a set of little brain tools u like to use to think about things? here are some of mine
grass sheep: based on the story of an ai who identified photos of sheep correctly, but then it turned out it was recognizing photos with grass in the background. i try to find the grass of a sheep when i'm thinking about the "proof" of something to identify possible other things that could produce that result other than the thing that is assumed to be being proven
hot swap: when thinking about something's place in the world, i like to try to imagine what would need to be different about the larger context for something else to take its place. what would need to be different? what would follow as a change? i often do this to two things that are presented as opposites.
sterility vs bioactivity: there's two solutions to reptile husbandry, one of having sterile and frequently cleaned items to manually remove waste and kill disease, and the other of creating a small ecosystem to reduce and process waste and prevent disease by having other things living there. i use this to think about what alternate routes of solutions could be other than manual control/reduction/elimination of problems
third axis: if i get stuck on a problem that seems to have only two answers, i try to move "vertically" away from it. if something must be either true or false, what would it mean for it to not matter either way? if something must be either supported or fought against, what would it mean to make it irrelevant entirely?
for an example of using one of these tools, specifically sterility vs bioactivity: i am a person who could be described as clinically depressed. and consistently i failed at the task of removing or suppressing depressed thoughts from my brain or depression itself from my body. (whether or not this was ever actually very feasible is sort of beside the point -- sterility is never actually 100% achievable!)
using this framework i can describe that approach as a kind of "sterile" approach to mental health, one that focuses on removal/destruction of a problem. thinking about it as sterile produces the opportunity for thinking in the direction of bioactivity: what kinds of things could i introduce into my brain ecosystem to make it more self-regulating of waste? what kinds of things could i introduce into my brain ecosystem to take up the space that depressive thoughts would need to live?
this lead to a lot of the ways i currently cope with those sorts of things: filling my time and brain with interesting flora and fauna of hobbies and interests and sensory experiences to process the waste terror of daily life and prevent the disease from having a real foothold....
These are great! I love metaphorical thinking as a route to critical thinking. A few I use:
Break the Lever - Based on the philosophical trolley problem, it’s questioning the system that is positing a supposed dichotomy of choices rather than choosing, i.e. saying “why do we need the lesser of two evils? how can we instead untie the people from the tracks?”
“You Could Be that Cop” - This is part of a longer quote by James Baldwin: “What you’ve got to remember is what you’re looking at is also you. Everyone you’re looking at is also you. You could be that person. You could be that monster, you could be that cop. And you have to decide, in yourself, not to be.” I’m a high school teacher, so it’s mostly an internal framework to break/bend rules as needed to avoid reproducing carceral structures as much as possible.
Maybe they need to shit/Unconditional Positive Regard - This is a “real” mental framework founded in a lot of theorists, but the “maybe they gotta shit” framing comes from explaining this concept to a friend, in which I explained that when I see someone doing something seemingly unexplainably stupid/evil on the highway, I stop the “ugh what an asshole!” and try to think: what would make a rational, well intentioned person act this way? And well… when I have to shit really bad, I’m sure I drive in some wild ass ways too.
Real Effect or Thought Beam? When I am spiraling into a perseverating thought, I will pause it by asking myself: can I have a real effect on this problem, or am I trying to send thought beams? The idea is questioning whether or not my energy could be spent better actually making change, or if this is something actually outside my sphere of control/influence and not worth my ruminating.
there's this sort of default assumption online that you're meant to have watched the latest defunctland, hbomberguy or dan olson video in a manner i'd compare to "catch the game last night?"
This city is WAY too Italian to have hospital waiting rooms this small. Sorry to anyone else with a cardiac emergency tonight but my family is already camped out taking up fully 80% of the space here. Pick a different hospital
The family dynamics here are fascinating. Big shows of affection every time someone arrives or leaves but every time the room makeup changes the rumors and airing of grievances start. My aunt is pissed at my uncle for not helping out enough with my ailing grandfather. My grandmother is pissed at my aunt for constantly begging for money, which she spends on booze and cigarettes. My uncle is pissed at my grandmother for taking out a restraining order on his son. My mother is still not speaking to my other aunt, despite her ODing and winding up in the ICU, over a ten year old slight. I am sitting here quietly, taking notes for a hypothetical mystery novel.
I'm calm. my nerves are relaxed. I will not be stressed by the priviledge to practice creative work even more
tumblr has started autodetecting screenshots which is already pretty silly but for some reason the best thing they can think to do with this technology is macro a share window. on the post you just took a screenshot of.
staff's non-development priorities are pretty clear and contemptible but their development goals are just baffling
They have also implemented the inverse for some reason, if you hit the button to send the post to someone it offers to make a screenshot out of it, which curiously ignores dark mode settings and hides the last blog it came from but does not hide whether you've liked it:

Seeing people drive big lifted and totally pristine giant pickup trucks as just a car to get to and from work on fully paved roads is like watching a high energy working breed dog be forced to live in a 1 bedroom apartment and only go out for poop walks.
If you cant provide them the home they need its abuse. That truck should be hauling bricks, it needs to be maxing out its suspension hitting ridges at 65 mph. It should be dirty and dented because they love it. Theres no enrichment in your 1/4 mile drive to the gas station. Youre torturing it, youre killing that truck.
it's always a little scary when the mutual starts rbing untagged rape fetish posts
people legitimately forget that rape is a reality that can trigger people. and not just some kink that mean feminists yuck a lot
ID: screenshot of an anonymous ask that reads, "Oh noooo untagged rape fetish how will you go on" End ID

You know as an American born in the late 90s I’ve watched my country blow up foreigners on tv supposedly in the interest of national security since I was a toddler but quite frankly we live on a natural fortress of a continent with friendly nations to our north and south and have been attacked on our own soil literally two times in the past hundred years and we have military bases on every inhabited continent on earth. It’s never made sense to do these things for “national security”. It never will make sense unless you value the shareholders of weapons companies over the lives of children. And apparently a concerning amount of people do.
If a fantasy world has an ancient tree of wisdom, that means it must also have young trees that are dumb as shit. Just giving terrible advice like, "the evil wizard is kinda hot"'
This implies a just-kind-of-old tree, presumably doling out trivia, widely held misconceptions, and gardening tips. "I don't know, try throwing some mint or kudzu into the evil wizards garden."
Kind of old tree after lecturing for an hour about hardy, pest resistant plants and storing nutrients, "Okay, next up are predators of th- Hey, are you guys listening? You should be writing this down."
"How is this going to defeat the evil wizard?"
"Fuck, I thought you said wevil wizard."
"Oh, you talked with the ancient tree of wisdom, did she ask about me? How does she look? Let me guess, she said to look within and know your heart or some bullshit. Well that don't put food on the table."
"Right, but the evil wizard?"
"Fuck if I know, try outcompeting the wizard for sunlight and soil nutrients."
crazy how every time a female character gets cliche misogynistic writing we have to explain to people again that fictional characters are not real and do not choose things for themselves.
it’s really this at the end of the day tbh
worst part of being an adult is how often youre forced to nag. you Have to be annoying or youre never getting anything done. which is unfortunate considering how common it is to teach kids to never nag and be annoying ever
a professional i am paying money doesnt show up w zero communication and IM the one who has to feel guilty for having to call him and ask whats going on. because when i was a little kid i would get yelled at for nagging. joke world
