A pride flag was one of the quilting projects I really wanted to get done, and it works great as a scraps buster.
This is roughly 40 by 65 centimetres (about 16 by 26 inches) and quilted in the ditch with thin cotton batting. I wish I'd used rainbow thread for the quilting, but I didn't have any on hand, and the goal was to not buy any new materials.

HST = half square triangle; S = square.
The pieces are listed on the diagram above, but here they are again:
Light blue: 10 HST
Light pink: 6 HST
White: 2 HST
Brown: 12 HST
Black: 12 HST
Red: 1 HST, 7 S
Orange: 1 HST, 6 S
Yellow: 1 HST, 5 S
Green: 1 HST, 5 S
Blue: 1 HST, 6 S
Purple: 1 HST, 7 S
The HST are 9 cm (ā3.5 in) and the squares are 8 cm (ā3.14 in). I used a 5 mm (ā0.2 in) seam allowance. I recommend using a bigger seam allowance if youāre making a larger quilt, or one that will be used as a blanket or as part of a wearable piece.
I worked by washing, pressing, and cutting all my fabric into the necessary pieces. I then assembled all my HST into squares, then pressed the seams open, and squared the squares down to 8 cm (ā3.14 in). I assembled those squares into 1x1 pieces, pressed, squared. Those were assembled into 2x2 pieces, pressed, squared. Then into 2x6 bands, pressed, squared. Then into 4x6 bands, pressed, squared. I then assembled the three resulting bands (two 4x6, one 2x6) and pressed and squared one last time to finish the quilt top.

After all HST were assembled into squares. I recommend taking pictures of your fabric set up before sewing, so you remember which order you wanted to put your squares in.

I used the bi flag as a backing, but feel free to do a one-sided flag and use the backing of your choice. I know thereās cute pride-themed quilting cotton out there, or just a plain colour would work as well.
I donāt have a diagram for the bi flag: I used 8 cm (ā3.14 in) squares, 16 blue, 8 purple, and 16 pink. Those were assembled similarly, as I find working in full bands results in irregular points.
A similar process could be used to make any pride flag of your choice! I might make a trans pride one eventually. This is a really good stash-busting project, and a cuter alternative to a polyester flag. Please send me pics or tag me if you sew one!

My lovely spouse and I just celebrated our 16th anniversary, and since sheās been quite Heated Rivalry-minded, I made them a tote bag!
I quilt, and as soon as I saw Ilyaās wall art (Matraz from MFKTO) I thought it would look great as a patchwork panel. Iām (as always) dissatisfied with the points, but if you quilt, youāll understand how finicky they can be.
The panel features a lot of different colours, which even my extensive fabric hoard couldnāt all fulfill. Since sustainability is important to Calou, I simplified some of the (15!!) shades and painted plain grey fabric to reach the right hues. All I had to buy was black canvas cotton, a zipper, and the two carabiners (and a new needle holder for my sewing machine, for the holding screw broke into the threading of the old needle holder while I was sewing, which was great and I love that it happened.)
Under the cut is the plain panel, as well as my notes and the mapping out of the panel. The tote itself was drafted as I went, but I included my notes. Please donāt use it as a pattern. Any of it, really.
The plain panel. This was the original gift, and Calou decided they wanted a tote bag with it. Itās backed with lightweight fusible interfacing for added stability and durability. I also ended up adding a 5cm border all around it.
All dimensions on the following drafts are in centimeters :
Plotting out the layout. To account for the floating gold polygons, I broke up the space surrounding them in strips of fabric. There ended up being 28 different pieces, which is when you should give up. I numbered all the pieces, figured the dimensions of the simpler ones, and wrote them down with a 5mm seam allowance included. I should probably have done 7.5mm or even 10mm.
Vague notes to self for the tote bag. None of the dimensions include seam allowance, unless noted in parenthesis. Forgive the Frenglish. I simply measured the shoulder straps of their favourite tote bag, length and width, and used that for the straps. I recommend doing so for any tote bag: you know what you like!
For the sides, we decided on the Centaursā jersey design as pictured on the book covers.
