First pick but not rookie of the year, thatās how his first hockey season ended. If he had any doubts about it being memorable they would be squashed under the expectations put on his shoulders and the solid warmth of the only person who seemed to be able to catch up to him.
After the latest trip to Moscow that worked through its newly acquired script, Ilya studied and perfected it, just to return to Boston the second he heard word of before the season practices.Ā
Seeing Svetlana again for a long period of time was worth it. Heād missed her calming presence. Ilya tended to feel like a small boat on an open, angry ocean every time he went back to Russia. Harsh winds and big waves that crashed and filled the boat enough to wet his ankles and slow his movements but not tip him over. Svetlana acted like the sails leading him to ground, always on the horizon but never reaching. Every time he went back, the water went just a bit higher. Landing in Boston had started to feel more and more normal as he exited through the airport gates that he seemed to have learned by heart already.Ā
With his return to Boston, came the return to his newest favorite activity. Texting Shane Hollander. The conversations filled with chirping and horrible sexting. He didnāt need to have Hollander in the room to imagine his look of confusion and pinking cheeks.Ā
The problem that arose however, is something Ilya could not have predicted. It was a well known fact around the team and the hockey world that Rozanov started building a roster in every city he set foot in. Seeing him with his phone, fingers confidently typing improper grammar was not a surprise to any of his team members. But heās back in Montreal now.
āWow, this Montreal girl works you up brother?ā came Marlowās annoying, agitating, grating voice that popped the bubble of excitement and erased the smile of his face. The second he heard Cliffās stupid words, Ilya turned to look at his stupid eyes on his tiny ass forehead.
Blinking rapidly he soon replied, heart having fallen to his ass in a moment of panic, āShut your idiot face, Marlow.ā As if that wasnāt enough to indicate this conversation, that shouldnāt have started to begin with, was over, Marlow kept fucking speaking.
āYouāre straight up blushing, Roz.ā In all the years Ilya Rozanov had walked on this earth, he could count on one hand the amount of times someone tried to offend him to such an extent.
āNo, no. Never in life have I blushed, Russians do not do this.ā Throwing his phone in his cubicle was the only thing keeping him back from throwing it at Cliffās face when he started fucking giggling.Ā
And so they lost the game, and Ilya truly was angry and frustrated. However, somewhere deep inside in the back of his mind, the persistent known fact of tonight's possibilities just happened to very slightly dampen any other emotions brewing. Giving a quick speech as the newly appointed captain handling their loss with their greatest rivals, had the other men in the room nod tiredly and clap his back as he passed by. A quick shower later, he got dressed and declined the teamās invitation to a night out, leaving the room with Marlowās stupid comments about Montreal Jane and whistles. The team may have lost tonight, but he sure as hell was about to be the winner.Ā
Opening his phone as he heard a well-timed ping, he saw an address sent by āJaneā. Finding a taxi was easy enough in Montreal on game night. About 15 minutes later he felt the taxi turn to a smaller, darker street. A thank you and a big tip later, Ilya exited the car to fresh Canadian air and a nearly eerie quiet. Following the direction on Google Maps led his feet to go even deeper into the alley, to a door at the back of the building. Having a quick smoke to calm his nerves, not that he needed to of course, Ilya quickly throws the cigarette on the ground stomping it while texting Hollander. Putting his phone in his pocket, he only had to wait. A sharp, metallic door opened showcasing bleak yellow lighting and a frazzled looking Hollander.Ā
Shadly looking around, Ilya spoke up first, āYou will murder me.ā Have it known that Shane Hollander was indeed funny as a quick Maybe left Ilya smirking as he was led into the staircase. The second the door closed behind him, a hand caught the lapels of his jacket and threw him at the wall on his right. Feeling a breath escape him on impact, the sudden change of direction made Hollander the pivot and center of his attention. Little else could be as exhilarating as being thrown around by a hot, strong hockey player. Looking up Ilya locked eyes with obsidian and hints of brown as he kept eye contact with the man in front of him. His eyes strayed to scattered freckles only twice. Are there more of them now? He knows his mouth is moving and he is replying with teasing comments but his mind was still reeling from the feeling of Hollander.Ā
āOh, you miss me, didnāt you?ā Eyes trailed along, following soft black hair as Shane moved to climb the stairs, hand catching to the end of the softest blue hoodie Ilya had ever felt. As if a well oiled machine activated he immediately replied while pushing away the grip Rozanov had on him.
āI fucking didnāt.ā Quickly following the other manās footsteps, Ilya started climbing. In all his years of living, Ilya had never met someone who could match him toe to toe. Even Sveta could learn his way of thinking and predict his actions, but that was only most of the time and after a great amount of consideration. Shane Hollander however acted as a mirror parallel to everything that Ilya seemed to do. Almost as if a zip of electricity passed through their synapses at the same time, both boys started racing up the stairs, pushing each other with everything they got.Ā
Soon enough they reached the actual door to the apartment, as Ilya was dragged around in a small tour. Mr.Landlord all right. The bedroom quickly entered their sight as they passed by the threshold. For the last few minutes Ilya had been struck by little happy buzzes as Shane droned on about the apartment and his designer and blah blah blah. He could only really focus on Hollanderās, wellā everything really. Slowly approaching the other player, Ilya almost felt like they were playing against each other on the ice. A pull and a push there and Shane Hollander was laid out before him, all soft and warm and smooth and perfect. Ilyaās brain went quiet. He didnāt need to think, only to hear and memorize all of Shaneās little noises as hands clutched his curls.Ā
Stepping foot on the nearly frozen ground of Moscow never truly felt like a welcome back. Yet it always left Ilya with a see you again. Last year's Olympics winner was Russia, so this year they are hosting the game in Sochi. If it was any other place Ilya wouldāve been on his way there already, but being past his countryās border allowed for Grigori Rozanov to throw orders around. Besides that, he wanted to go and visit someone. Going back and forth during the season practically made it impossible for him to really have time to do this, but whenever he could he made plans to go visit his mama.Ā
Sveta always waited for him at the airport, ironically however he saw her more frequently back in Boston then here. Life in Russia worked with a set of instructions given to you upon your return and an unspoken rule that breaking any of them will have some form of consequence. The air felt stifled, his lungs felt like they had less space. Every breath felt like it had to be counted to fill the exact number that is given to you per your instructions. He was only to stay in Moscow for a few days, then he would be on another plane towards Sochi to go train his team.Ā
Captain of the Russian Olympic team at the ripe age of 22. It was an honor like no other, according to his father of course. Maybe even the whole country. Nationalism sailed through the blood of the people of Russia. Ilya was waiting for it to set sail in his.Ā
The days in his childhood home tended to merge together. The sky was always gray and gloomy, the air humid and the winds persistent. Waking up today was like any other day here. In a place like Moscow, he wondered if his eyes seemed gray like his mamaās did.Ā No sun was visible through the early hours of the morning. His alarm had only needed to ring once before Ilya opened his eyes and started his day. He wore his slacks and good shoes, the Rozanovs had a reputation to uphold. Heād been angry at it for a long time, now heās just tired of it. Quickly putting on his black coat, he made his way out of the door. Leaving the vast gardens behind Ilya walked a well traversed path. You could close his eyes and block his ears and heād always find himself back here. Walking to the back of the mansion his view filled in with an apple tree. The apple tree. His mamaās favorite fruit had always been apples. They were ordinary enough to be found anywhere and there were such vast varieties, similar enough to each other to be different, she'd say. So he had fought, tooth and nail to make sure that her resting place was under an apple tree. Heād fought for days, tears permanently making paths down his rosy cheeks. Vocal cords hoarse from the yelling and the crying. Alexei had gotten angry, hit him even, but nothing was more important than mama, and mama was gone. That was the one time Grigori heard him.Ā
Irina Rozanova rested at a beautifully ornate grave. The rock was the highest of qualities, however you wouldnāt be able to tell. The grass around her was overgrown, the rock darkened by the weather. No one came to clean it during the year except for Ilya. Even the maids were ordered to let it be untouched. Yet, the greenery around it flourished. Flowers every season, grass at all times, apples falling down their branches, too many of them for the tree to be able to keep. Branches extended towards the grave almost as if shielding it. Leaves decorating it all year round.Ā
The day before Ilya had bought his motherās favorite flowers, a bouquet of Lillies. In the midst of it were delphiniums and foxgloves. The woman at the shop had long memorized Ilyaās face, alongside his reason for coming there. Alongside the flowers he always picks up a small plastic bag containing candles and a small box of Pryanikis obtained from the bakery across the street. In his other hand is a water bottle. Going towards the grave, Ilya shut his mind and let himself get swept by the familiarity of the routine. Pick away the leaves and dirt, on the sides take care to detach the snails that always creep up, putting them somewhere he wonāt accidentally crush. The flowers being held by the metallic vase at the corner of the marbled top were long rotten. The last person to put them there had been him, like always. Every once in a while he wonders if amongst the bouquet he should get some plastic flowers so they can resist the harsh weather a bit longer, every time however it feels like that would be some sort of goodbye. Taking out the old flowers he put them by his feet and raised the vase to allow the water accumulated in it to drain. He picked up the water bottle he had filled at the sink and started pouring it around the grave, allowing it to wash away any dust it can. The marbleās white snowy color coming back into view. Almost as if it realized, the sun came up letting the water dry quickly. Pulling out the candles, Ilya made quick work of lighting them up and putting them in the small glass container made just for them. The cookies made their way next being put under Irinaās beautiful picture. A cross lay next to it, alongside the words āBeloved Mother, wife, daughterā. When he was young heād tried to make them write more. They had nothing more to say. With the plastic bag now empty Ilya reached for the rotten flowers and started breaking off the stems of the bouquet in order for it to fit the vase. Birds chirped around, and a mild wind picked up leaves. The sun hadnāt left yet, as if realizing Irinaās importance.Ā Ā
Looking down at his work, he could see his own blonde curls reflected on the marble, a stark reminder of the woman laying there. Walking to the left side of the grave, Ilya sat down, right next to his motherās picture. Whenever he is in Russia, he doesnāt talk much, but this little corner of dirt and flowers and a tree always let him be. Giving a quick kiss to the photo, Ilya let himself go. He let his head fall on the stone and in a quiet voice, started telling his mama all about Boston, Marlow, his teammates, the season, Sveta and Shane. His Shane. In quiet whispers and slow words he confesses to his mama, what he wouldnāt dare confess to the world. At the back of the grave, Ilya let his fingers trace a small jagged carving.
Yours forever Mama.
The next day heās on his way to Sochi with plans to meet his team and train them. Everythingās weighing on his shoulders. Success is a choice not a coincidence. Which is probably why Ilya felt absolutely helpless against this group of unruly stupid men. No matter what his papa says, hockey is a team sport and Rozanov cannot afford to be their leader, wild card, defense, goalie, center and referee. He is good, one of the best if not the bestā if he doesnāt have a slow canadian voice fighting him in his ear. But he is not a magician. So after hours and sweat poured over the Russian hockey team, it ended up being for nothing. They lost against Latvia. It was unheard of, it was humiliating and it fell on his shoulders. His brother's leering voice and his fatherās harsh cadence were just too much, so Ilya closed his brain and stepped back. Every once in a while he would open one eye to see his phone.Ā
Jane:
Hey! U doing ok?
He let his eyes roam over the message, opened and read it. Whatever warmth he felt from it he shut down. Right under that he had another notification.
Alyona:
You did amazing Ilyusha, it was not your fault.
Are you free? I am here to watch you and would love if we could meet.
I miss you, Ilya. She wouldāve been proud no matter what.
He stared at his phone closing slowly, the screen darkening before deciding to at least reply to Alyona. He hadnāt seen her in so long.Ā
The next day started with a stupid persistent alarm Ilya put just to make sure he wouldnāt be late to the designated meeting spot he decided with Alyona. His later plans consisted of wallowing in guilt and maybe going to see the menās figure skating tournament. After all thatās the least likely place he could run into anybody.
Opening his suitcase, he pulled out a light layered jacket. It wasnāt cold enough for a thicker one. Quickly putting it on he had the completely unwanted realization that it was the exact fucking jacket he had on when he went to Hollanderās house in Montreal.
He didnāt like thinking of that Montreal night. Didnāt like thinking of Shaneās little you smell like cigarettes. Didnāt like thinking of you come here, no you come here. Didnāt like thinking of a fancy house and a hundred thousand throw pillows. Didnāt like thinking of folded clothes and smooth skin. Of jet black hair and big brown eyes. Of breathy sighs and feverish skin and nimble hands and moans filling the air alongside their combined smell. Didnāt like thinking of a gentle hand running through his curls. Of being walked down stairs as he waited for his stupid Uber. Of curious orbs and jokes. Of the softest hoodie alongside the softest pair of lips as he kissed Hollander before having to pull himself of by sheer will and force alone or heād start thinking about a future and happiness.
Ilya is a great liar when he needs to be. He can put on faces and act the way people around him want him to act. His father made sure to train him young and his mother always seemed sad by the fact that she could tell Ilya was just pretending. Sadder than usual. But pretending was a necessity in the Rozanov household. It was a survival tactic. His mother grew tired of pretending. In turn she didnāt survive. Ilya often wondered how long he could keep pretending for.
His phone pulled him from his thoughts as the ping of it alerted him of another message by Alyona. Putting his shoes on, he made a quick checklist of his phone, wallet and hotel card. Right as he was opening the door he caught sight of unruly blonde locks. Whatever. It was just Alyona anyways.Ā
The cafe they decided to meet at was a small looking thing hidden from plain sight. When you walked in, a bell jingled alerting the worker of the presence of a new customer. Taking a quick look around he caught sight of a brunette bun on a short woman. He knew that woman. Walking towards her, he put his hand on her shoulder, feeling her jump a bit from the unexpected touch. As soon as Alyona turned around, Ilya was caught in a strong hug. It was his turn to be caught off guard. Gathering his wits quickly he put his arms around the shoulders of the smaller woman. Alyona was warm. She had always been warm, a big bundle of warmth and comfort and reassurance. He let himself have this. He hasnāt been hugged sinceā he doesnāt know when actually. Breaking apart he looks down to ask.
āHave you ordered yet? I can go, tell me what you want.ā Alyona tries to convince him that it is ok but he is his motherās son. āIf you do not tell me what you want, Iāll just go and order a bit of everything.ā Alyona rolled her deep blue eyes.
āOh my god, could you be any more dramatic, Ilyusha? Get me a Cappuccino and a slice of cake please.ā Hearing the exasperation in her voice made him slightly smile.Ā
So Ilya walked up to the counter, ordered, picked up their drinks and went to sit down. The space quickly filled with small talk that evolved into Ilyaās life in Boston and almost reluctantly, Alyonaās life in Moscow. Alyona had married later than Irina. She met her husband at the university she studied Psychology at. A year or two later they got married, however no matter how many times they tried, they couldnāt have children. Whenever his mama was too tired, Alyona would come and help around the house as long as Grigori wasnāt there. She was the closest thing he had to family besides Sveta.Ā
āHave you visited her yet?āĀ
Ilya just nodded while sipping. Eyes returning to a neutral state after crinkling with laughter for the past 15 minutes. āOf course.ā Looking up he saw Alyonaās attentive gaze tip to his. āI cleaned her and everything. She should be ok until next summer.ā
Alyonaās small smile turned almost remorseful. āI miss her everyday.ā Holding his hand on the table she continued. āAnd you miss her every second of every minute of every hour. I can proudly and confidently tell you Ilya, you are everything she wished you to be and more.ā
Lowering his head, he felt the urge to wipe at his eyes quickly filling up. Alyona became slightly blurry in front of him, but from the sheen on her eyes he could tell she was tearing up as well.
āYou were her pride and her joy. Everything she looked forward to had you in the middle. You were her sun.ā
Drying his eyes, Ilya could only reply. āI donāt want her proud, I just want her back.ā
For all their attempts at keeping this lighthearted they sure failed as Alyonaās cheeks filled with trails of tears. The conversation continued a bit more until they reached a form of companionable silence. Putting their glasses and plates back at the counter, Ilya helped Alyona with her coat before wearing his. As soon as they walked outside, as the faint noise of the bell was blocked, Alyona pulled him to the side and into another deep hug. This time he let himself shed a few tears. Comfort like this wouldnāt show up in a while. Alyonaās strong rose perfume permeated his nose as he let his head be put on the comforting shoulder of one of the most important people in his life, a hand cradling him. Nuzzling he let himself be carried over, for just a few more minutes.
After a sad goodbye filled with promises, Ilya walked Alyona to her taxi, waiting for her to get in and the car to get out of his sight before starting to walk towards the Olympic Village. He didnāt have any games anymore, neither did he have any practices, but if he went back to that horrible empty hotel room, he was gonna lose his mind. Especially with the upcoming dinner he had to attend tomorrow night alongside his father. At least Sveta would be there.Ā
The roads of the village were never quiet, each athlete functioning on their own internal clock and routine. You could wake up at 4 in the morning and someone would be training or stay up until 2 in the morning and see the same thing. He walked these roads, almost in a reminiscent manner, they seemed much more alive the first day he stepped foot here. Before he lost to fucking Latvia.Ā
Finding the figure skating building was remarkably easy. The Olympic Village had to be built from scratch, so the architects would always put areas that needed lots of ice together, so right next to the Hockey ring, stood the figure skating one. Walking in he made a quick scan of the people, before deciding better than to sit on the stands. Heād been coming here for the past 2 days and found a spot no one seemingly wanted to walk on. Climbing up the stair he opened the door, the sound getting lost at the sheet size of the ring, before going near the first column on the right and finally letting himself have a breath. His phone had been buzzing and ringing the whole time, Alexei making sure his opinions were known and heard, loud and clear. Closing his phone again, he could only shake his head in disappointment before he felt the presence next to him. Turning left slightly filled his vision with a bright white and fuzzy texture, eyes catching on the the glaringly red of the Canadian leaf embroidered on both arms of the one and only person Ilya had not wanted to meet in fucking Russia.
Shane Hollander was standing a āsafeā distance apart in all his big doe eyes glory, as fading freckles pointed daggers into the side of Ilyaās face. A stupid āHeyā left Hollanderās soft lips. This wasnāt a place he could be soft in.Ā
Making sure to turn his face back towards the ring, to send a message, or better yet a warning. They cannot be caught having a conversation here.Ā
āNot here.āĀ
And sweet, soft Shane Hollander kept going, and Ilya knew it was out of concern and worry but he didnāt know what to do with it, not now, not here, not on this soil and this wind.Ā
āNo, Iām notā¦ā A quick look around and Shane kept going. āI saw you up here, I just wanted to see how youāre doing.ā He canāt care. He cannot afford to. Why did he have to make it so hard for Ilya. He didnāt want to see Shaneās face fall, hurt written all over it. But Ilya did not have choices in Russia, he has instructions.
āFine. Go sit down.ā and Shane was so persistent. He was almost as persistent with Ilya as he was with hockey. Before allowing him to continue, Ilya cut him off. āWe are not anything. Go away Hollander.ā Letting his eyes lock on to the spinning man currently doing tricks, he made sure to not turn towards Hollander. One look and heād be gone.Ā
āAre you ok?ā Ilya could feel the blood vibrating in his veins, ready to jump out and leave and find a way just so he didnāt have to look and let Hollander see what was going on. āYou didnāt answer my text.ā
And Ilya knew Shane wouldnāt leave. This wasnāt about them as much as it was about the genuine worry Hollander had towards Ilya. Because Shane was good, he was so good and really he should be staying far away from Ilyaās rotting touch cause all he seems to be able to do is cause pain and suffering.Ā
So he did what he knew best, and caused it. Turning to face Hollander he could read everything the other man was feeling written in bold letters on his forehead. Making sure to lock eyes, Ilya dealt the final blow, āNo, I did not answer your boring texts. Now will you go?ā
Predictably Shane averted his eyes, defeat finally sinking in. āFine. Fuck.ā Ilya kept his gaze towards Shane retreating back, the red Canada sign almost mocking him. Closing his eyes he turned towards the ring and let his head fall on the metal next to him. He only had a bit more until Hollander reached his seat. He should leave.
Returning home after spontaneously meeting Shane, was far more draining than he expected. Well, he wasnāt expecting to meet Shane at all, to be fair. Now he only had a few hours before he needed to go back to Moscow to then go to the dinner planned by whatever officials that had invited him and his father. So Ilya went back to his hotel room and started packing whatever little clothes he had with him. Walking around the room he checked every drawer, as if they had been opened to begin with. Going in the bathroom he made sure to get his toothbrush that always seemed to get lost in his constant travels. Having a few more hours to spare Ilya put on an alarm and decided to get under the covers and hopefully close his eyes for a few hours.
What was maybe an hour later, Ilya felt his eyelids twitch as he registered the shrill noise of his alarm waking him up to leave the room. Wearing his jacket and shoes, he picked up his small suitcase and left for the reception.Ā Ā
On his way to the airport, a text lit up his phone as it was pulled out of the pocket of his jacket. Half of him expected another message from Hollander, but considering how heād acted to the man he knew he wouldnāt be seeing any messages from Jane for a while. If not forever. Maybe that was for the best, for the both of them.Ā
He went through the monotony of going through airport security, it had become second nature at this point, and sat down on the small plane. A few hours later he was at the comfort of his room in Moscow, though no real comfort had been felt in between these four walls since he was 12. For now he had the luxury of falling asleep. There was no need for an alarm this time as the only responsibility he had to take care of was the dinner tomorrow evening.Ā
A suit had already been prepared for him the next morning, having just arrived from the dry cleaning and a quick ironing by one of the maids around the house. Ilya went on a run and tried to will the day away. The sooner this day ended, the sooner the night came, the sooner heād be back to this house and then heād leave to be back home. Knowing Grigori was going to start his monologues and wise words in a bit, he picked up the suit alongside the bow tie and dressed himself. Going to the adjoined bathroom he spent, he doesnāt know how long, taking care to make his curls look posed and taken care of. Father had always expected his mother to look her best, even in moments where there were no guests to be met. Even on the day of her death, her curls were taken care of. No frizz or split ends in sight as her locks spilled on the bathroom floor, a sharp contrast with the darker interior.
As if he carries an internal clock, the older Rozanov called his name. Knowing their, on his side, reluctant almost-routine before any public outings, was due, Ilya picked up his shoes, putting them on and started walking towards his fatherās bedroom. Upon entering the room the older man beckoned him to come closer as he turned around to pick up, what seemed like a glass of Vodka. Breathing deeply Ilya stalked closer and followed his father around as he turned to him, the expected venom leaving his mouth.Ā
āYou need a haircut.ā A well learned reply was already leaving Ilyaās mouth.
āYes, sir.ā
His father ranted on and on about the honor of being invited by the minister despite his utter failure. But unlike the learned clockwork of their conversations, now there seemed to be gaps to it. Ilya had been noticing his father straying memory for a while now, but no matter how often he seemed to scream and yell and shout at Alexei or Polina about it they both turned a blind eye. The one thing however that his father remembered like a weapon, was his disappointment. It seemed no matter how good Ilya did, or how much he tried, it didnāt matter enough to cement itself to the fleeting mind of a cruel man. At this point it almost seemed impressive. Heād accepted it long ago,Ā yet he always feels like he has to learn how to accept it in real time as a his heart gives a small tinge at the words. Grigori keeps speaking, with Ilya nodding and drinking the Vodka that seemed to snake down his throat like a vice. No reply would be satisfactory for the man in front of him. No matter how Ilya bared his teeth back in America or Canada, the only thing that seemed to be bared when he was back in Russia was his throat. A small pause in the conversation brought his attention back to his father who was now handing his own glass for Ilya to hold as he started reaching for his bow tie. Almost on instinct Ilya tensed until the next words shook him to his core.
āWho tied this for you?ā with no time left to reply Grigori trailed on, āYour mother? She doesnāt know how to do this properly.ā
Wrinkled hands started adjusting the bow. Lowering his head so he can look his father in the eye, Ilya corrected, āNo, father.ā He had to correct this. He never wanted Grigori to forget what he caused to Irina Rozanova.
āMama is dead. You remember?ā This time, his father tensed, as his eyes seemed to stray around almost in confusion.Ā
āWe should go.ā
A car ride away and they arrived at the gala organized by the minister. As soon as they entered through the incredibly ornate door they were whisked away by government officials. Ilya quickly zoned out, as he nodded on autopilot. In the corner of his eye he could see his father glance over, and while usually that would mean he wasnāt paying enough attention, now there was almost a helpless quality to it. Almost as if he was asking for help. Before he cared to think more deeply about it he snapped back into reality as Sveta seemed to make her way over to talk to her own father. She caught his hand, making an excuse about needing a drink as she quickly pulled him down the stairs and into a quiet hallway.
Soon enough they came in front of a double doored room as Sveta dramatically pushed them open to reveal who was inside. Sasha. He hadnāt seen Sasha in forever, and to be quite frank, had no interest in seeing him again. Sasha snorted what was probably cocaine and started walking towards Ilya, a small smirk decorating his face alongside, before reaching him however, Sveta walked in with drinks. Almost reluctantly he saw Sasha sink into the tub in the middle of the room. He wasnāt getting out of here for a bit, so Ilya took off his jacket and leaned over one of the useless mirrors to the right side of the room. He could see the sails of his boat lift as they spoke about the current MHL season. Fuck the stupid russian team, Sveta was right, this year Boston had a chance to get to the cup.
Sighing, Sveta left her glass on the table as she rounded the room to say bye to both of the men. As soon as the doors closed behind her, Sasha started yapping. And he wouldnāt stop. As much as he used to relish in the ability to make the other man shut up, this time, or maybe for a long time now, he didnāt care to even spend a glance at the other man. His hair wasnāt dark enough, eyes rimmed with red as the browns in them almost seemed dull. Seemingly getting the message, only partially really, Sasha got out of the tub. He walked towards Ilya, lanky form coming closer to almost embrace him, as he started whispering memories into his ear., Too tall, too lanky, too flamboyant. Wow, big word. His lashes didnāt frame his eyes like they shouldāve. By all means, Sasha was a model back in Paris, Ilya just quite frankly didnāt give a shit as the only thing he could feel engraved on the back of his eyelids were star speckled freckles scattered across smooth cheekbones. Finally turning to look at the other man in the eye, Ilya just replied, āNo.ā
Sasha leaned away as he started speaking again, Ilya maybe wouldāve cared to listen if he hadnāt opened his phone to a familiar looking text.Ā
Hey! U doing ok?
His phone went dark again, the message most likely ingrained into the screen by now. Ilya wouldnāt have cared to listen anyways.Ā
Boston saw his face soon, with his return from Russia at the continuation of the season. They won, and they didnāt stop winning. Montreal was kicked off soon enough from an injury their goalie sustained, just like Sveta said and Boston was on a roll.
In the Spring of 2014, The Boston Raiders scored their final goal against San Francisco, effectively winning the Cup. The ice seemed to be almost melting as each player screamed while doing laps around the rink and throwing themselves at each other. Gloves and sticks were in the air as the team piled on top of the goalie. Sweat was rivulating on Ilyaās face, curls plastered to the front of his forehead where his helmet used to lay before being thrown amongst the other shit on the ice. Ilya got pulled by Marlow into a death grip, cursing filling his ears. Soon enough the cup was brought center ice, and handed over to the captain, Ilya Rozanov as he neared the camera, teammates screeching around his shoulders.
ŠŠ»Ń ŃŠµŠ±Ń, мама!
Ilya hadnāt seen Shane Hollander since Sochi. He was about to see him again, as they both presented the Major League Hockey Awards with stupid little scripts. By the time he arrived, suit and makeup ready for the cameras, he couldn't look Hollander in the eye. His stupid, lazy heart betrayed him however, as just hearing Shaneās stilted words had it beating faster than it had since holding the cup in his hands. The second he heard the man behind one of the cameras finish his countdown he walked ahead feeling the other man follow him into the spotlight as he put on a flashy smile and did a small wave.Ā
The script they had was awkward and slow, flowing in an almost wrong manner. He knew his lines, he learned them well, especially for this moment as he dug into his pocket to pull out his phone for the bit theyāre for some reason still running. Letting his arm raise higher he took note of the dichotomy they seemed to cause to the front camera, contrasting colors bringing out the features of both men. Without thinking twice Ilya pressed the button letting it take around three separate photos before closing the phone and putting it back into its place.
At the time he took these, Ilya had no way of knowing that these would be the only photos he would have with Shane for the whole decade they knew each other, besides the first photoshoot they did together. The moment the lights dimmed enough and the director signaled cut, Shane had left Ilyaās left side and briskly walked away from the stage. And he might as well have had a leash on Ilya as he followed behind him just a few steps slower.Ā Ā
Following the walking man in front of him seemed nearly impossible as Ilya nearly got lost in the labyrinth of the hallways in this building. Both of their steps echoed across the walls as the heels of their shoes harshly pressed against the tiles. In front of him, Ilya could only see the back of Hollander, his hair bouncing slightly until he reached a door and quickly entered it. The click of the same door closing is what snapped Ilya out of his spacing out, as he looked up to see that this was one of the many menās bathrooms of this establishment. Pressing against the door, letting it collide with the wall behind it, Ilya entered the room to see Shane quickly give him a one over and take a deep breath.Ā
For all his infinite knowledge of hookup culture and good social skills, Ilya was virtually lost on how to navigate this situation. In front of him Hollander clearly wanted nothing to do with him, but he hadnāt made any moves to actively push him away. And no matter what excuses Ilya gave to himself, he couldn't deny the effect the other player had on him. In Russia he was all poised and prepared, script ready like a gun. Here he was free. He was himself. And he wanted Shane, but heād never force him into anything.
Either way, what they had was simple. If Ilya still has the luxury of having it of course. So he put on his best smile, putting his arm around the hand dryer on the wall and faced the older man in front of him. Hollander was doing that thing where his big eyes strayed to every corner of the room before reaching his. Now they were framed by red eyelids and shiny eyelashes, putting forth the brown in them, a wet sheen over almost as if to hypnotize Ilya. Ilya let him slowly build up the eye contact, not wanting to rush him. He never wanted Hollander uncomfortable and all the little habits he did seemed to calm Shane down. It also helped that Ilya was positively endeared by them. In a completely platonic manner of course. Which is to say that while he expected Hollander to be cold or even slightly petty, he didnāt expect him to be almost volatile.
The man in front of him seemingly had a surge of anger as he spat out, āWhat?ā eyes temporarily looking away he continued,Ā āWhat the hell do you want Rozanov? You havenāt answered a text from me in like, 6 months.ā
A sharp breath followed as Shane loaded the next sentence, āYou wonāt even acknowledge that I exist unless thereās a fucking camera pointed at us,ā ā Taking another seemingly unexpected breath in, Hollander kept going as he gestured around, blinking rapidly āand then itās for some fucking clown show.ā Slowly losing his momentum, Shane dealt the finishing blow. āSo yeah, what the fuck do you want from me?ā
Keeping his eyes locked at the man opposite of him, Ilya let his head fall to the wall behind him.Ā
What Ilya wanted from Hollander, heād come to accept it immediately after breaking his heart in Sochi. What Ilya wanted from Shane Hollander did not matter because it shouldnāt exist therefore it does not. What Ilya wants from Shane is not just forbidden but illegal. It never mattered what Ilya wanted, he could never get it. He didnāt get it when he was 6, he didnāt get it when he was 12,Ā he wonāt get it now, and heāll never get it later. What Ilya wants doesnāt exist so therefore he does not want. What Ilya needs doesnāt matter. What he can get with the sticks and stones given to him when he was stranded on the island, is what heāll have.Ā
Ilya Rozanov is a selfish man. His father has said it to him his whole life, his brother reminds him of it during every phone call. With a handshake and an unlit cigarette he was able to get Shane, and selfishly he did not want to let go. So he didnāt.Ā Riling up the man in front of him was easy. Keeping their eyes locked and mouth blabbing often got him to where he needed to go. Shaneās eyes dropped to the floor as he turned away from Ilya. Letting his heels drag behind him, Ilya slowly approached Hollander, invading his bubble. Allowing himself to reach forward he put his palm on the side of Shaneās jaw, pulling him towards his face, letting his eyes roam over perfect full lips, reddened by the constant biting the other man seemed to do absentmindedly. Following the bridge of his nose let his eyes get caught by freckles. More now than when in Russia. His sight caught on teary eyes as Hollander let his head loose, seemingly giving the cards and the wheel over to Ilya. Because of course he was. Because he was fucking perfect. As soon as the soft Please left Shaneās lips, Ilya couldnāt help but let their foreheads drop towards each other, heād noticed it tended to calm the other man. As if having even more strings cut loose, Shane dragged his face until he fully leaned at the crook of Ilyaās neck.
Letting his lips drag over the short hair Shane had to the sides, Ilya turned his head to allow more space for him to lean and let his lips linger at the crown of Hollanderās head.Ā āNo.ā
Denying Shane mightāve been the single hardest thing Ilya has ever done in his life. And heād won a cup. So he compromised, catching Shaneās chin on his grip again, letting the other man wipe the few tears that had managed to drop. And as Shane replied with his stupid cute smile, Ilya had to push himself away slightly or heād enter his orbit and never leave again.
Locking eyes one more time, Ilya felt himself get lost as he pulled Shane closer to kiss him like a starving man in the desert. His heart picked up the pace.
Have it be known, that Ilya Rozanov never claimed to be smart. For all his big words of pushing Shane away and have it mean nothing, the second heād seen him tear up, he was a lost cause. Especially when it was an unsaid but known fact that this yearās MVP would be him. Montreal got pushed off way too quickly to allow the public to see the excellence that is Shane Hollander, so Ilya had effectively no rival for the title. Immediately after he got the trophy, he did a quick circle around the room before leaving. On the way to the hotel heād decided this was the last time heād get to have Hollander. Theyād both get something out of it, feel good and then be back to what they were always meant to be. Players on opposite teams. Coworkers at best.Ā
Going up the elevator required his key card as he was the only person staying in what they called āThe Penthouseā, or at least the 1st one, which he assumes means the biggest. Entering his, at this point, apartment, Ilya made quick work of his jacket and bow tie letting them hang so it wouldnāt bother Hollander. In the living room, the hotel had left a PR note about being honored to have him here and most importantly, a bottle of Vodka. A good one. So Ilya took out one glass, filling it generously.Ā Not too long after he heard knocking on his door and the beeping of the code being entered. A buzz soon followed as the door opened to reveal Hollander in all his unbuttoned shirt glory. Ilya let himself savor the view as he dragged his eyes across the currently undressing form of the other man, feeling his stupid heart betray him and warm up when he noticed nimble hands folding the clothes. Must be the Vodka.Ā
Heād made a plan. The more distance there was between him and Hollander the easier it would be to detach himself from this addiction. Dragging the chair away from the window he let his mouth order around. Hollander listened so well. Yet, Ilya seemed to prove his forgetfulness as he felt himself throw whatever plan he might have made out of the window. He was but a man, and heād be a lunatic monster if he somehow did not react to Shane Hollanderās straying hands and pleas.
āI needāā heart beating out of his chest Ilya egged on, āWhat?ā he didnāt remember if he had drank any more of the vodka.
āTell me.ā
āI need you.ā and Ilya Rozanov was gone.
The night was perfect and Shane was perfect and Ilya did not know what to do with himself when things went well and he couldnāt fucking do this anymore or heād talk too much and bleed out right here on the pale white sheets of a stupid hotel that kept the heat, shape and smell of Hollander right next to him. So he looked at the wall and pulled out a cigarette with shaking hands so he could quench his thirst and not pull Hollander into a kiss because next thing he knew heād be asking him to stay. Quickly putting the stick to his mouth he gave Hollander his prize. Ilya knew Shane did not like the taste of alcohol or even the smell of cigarettes but that did not matter. Ilya did not care. Ilya could not care. So he pushed, staring at the wall listening to the sounds of Hollander picking up his clothes and his shoes, walking around the penthouse and finally after a beat of silence, leaving.Ā
The night had been great. Ilya felt like he could throw up and do something unspeakable as the void in his chest seemed to get bigger and bigger as if there was a string attached to either man that pulled more taut as he went farther away.Ā
We didnāt even kiss.
Ilya kept smoking. The next two years were filled with calendar dates, home matches and going to and from Montreal. They had a good fight for the 2015 cup, but the Montreal Metros kicked them off the curb as Ilya spent his afternoon watching Shane Hollander lift the cup. A smile might have graced his lips but there was no one there to see. Every summer heād go back to Russia and the second the season started he'd catch himself in between toned legs and darkened freckles, tauntingly multiplying during his time away.Ā
During the season however, he was never really in one place. Whenever heād be back to Boston, if Sveta had any free time, theyād get dressed and go out to a club. Tonight was no different. Heād donned on a button up, the first few buttons left open, with the knowing knowledge that more would do the same as the night went on, and was waiting for Sveta to finish getting ready. Remote in hand, he passed by every platform ever, before deciding YouTube would be the best for a quick look. Before he knew it his eyes caught onto the 4th video recommended to him, āA look into Shane Hollanderās life: The Cottageā and his thumb pressed the center button on his remote. His view was quickly filled with a gorgeous scenery of nature, in the middle of it, almost co-existing, lay a beautifully built villa. Ilya had no idea where the fuck cottage came from as a name, cottages donāt look like a multi-million full length windowed, stone built house. Heād amped up to maybe send a text, teasing the man on the screen before his ears caught onto the next words. Something, something yoga. Letting his phone fall from his hand, Ilya looked up just as Sveta walked into the room, mildly obstructing his view of the TV. He knew she was saying something, but not much could distract him from the sudden view of Shane Hollander stretching across the screen. Or at least thatās what Ilya thinks heās doing, his brain had tuned out of any words said by the woman in the documentary as he let his eyes roam over familiar planes on warm skin. He shakes his head to disagree with whatever Sveta had just said, he caught wind of the confusion in her tone as he replied in false disinterest.
Almost as if she could read his mind, Sveta went on, āHeās fucking hot, though.ā
Green eyes immediately turned to her, a flare of something akin to jealousy and possession. He wishes itād been for Svetlana, with her gorgeous curls and full lips. But he knew better. It didnāt matter anyhow, heās hooked up with so many people and Shane Hollander was just like any other. Later when he finds himself strung in a sea of bodies, he ignores the images of Hollander his brain decides to conjure, before choosing somebody for the night.
Theyād built a routine by now and every time the other man would be at their home games instead of reaching out to meet in hotels, theyād comfortably let each other have their addresses. Up until now, theyād only really been able to go to Hollanderās house in Montreal. The seasons had been predictably unpredictable, so neither men knew if theyād still be in the play for the cup. In between everything they were doing however, their houses were the safest places.Ā Which is why Ilya didnāt hesitate to send a message goading Shane for their game tomorrow, immediately followed by a time. He knew the other player would say yes. That had nothing to do with the wall of Ginger Ale in his fridge door or even the tuna melt ingredients of course. He just knew that Hollander was particular about his life. Heād noticed his soft clothes that had the tag cut off or stretched out enough to not feel it, almost as if he uses it as a beacon on which side to fold his shirt on. The diet heād offhandedly mentioned and Ilya had seen in interviews and all these things that he seems to do slightly different. He never had the privilege of seeing Shaneās calendar, but he doesnāt need to. He imagines itās filled by hours on a day to day basis rather than just a weekly one. Ilya doesnāt tend to think about these things all that often, but heād honest with himself that Shane was one of the best lays heād ever had and it helped that they ran around each other in circles. He was always there, and heāll be there until he finds a nice girl to settle with, which doesnāt matter to Ilya.Ā
Hearing his doorbell ring followed by a series of knocks, made him get up, subconsciously fixing his hair. Peeking a bit through the clear glass on the side of his door, confirmed Shaneās silhouette, making his pulse speed up. With a quick flick of his wrist he unlocked the door, swinging it wide and letting his eyes roam to blue jeans and a brown jacketĀ before settling to jet black eyelashes framing Hollanderās eyes. Standing to the side he let Shane walk in, following him as he could see the small sparkle of interest as he took in Ilyaās apartment. Every time like clockwork Ilya is hit by memories of Mr. Landlord as he lets a small smirk rest on his face. He let Shane look around for a bit and ask his questions before doing anything since he knew this was one of his interests. But Ilya was just a man, so after a little he quietly cornered the other man to his counter before letting his hands run underneath his thighs to pull him on it. There was no need for Shane to have his clothes folded, Ilya had already prepared a newly washed pair for him anyways.
Time always flew by when they were together, and theyād both left their phones somewhere on the floor with the rest of their belongings so they truly did not know what hour of the day it was. But theyād done this a million times by now, so Ilya knew to psych himself up for what he was about to ask. Heād let Shane lead the conversation however, which apparently he was about to.Ā
āI should go.ā Staring out the window let Ilya gather the courage to ask, all the while noticing that Shane had turned to look at him.Ā
āOr you could stay.ā Turning his head slightly towards Shane, who replied, āStay?ā in a soft voice. Ilya quickly continued.Ā
āHere tonight.ā Taking a deep breath in he let his eyes fly across Shaneās face. āIām not done with you. And we have afternoon game tomorrow, so no morning practice.āĀ
He could see the little rules Hollander followed, wavering with each word, somewhere fighting between what Ilya was asking and what he wanted.Ā
āI told Hayden.ā At the name of the other man, Ilya let himself blink in confusion as he asked, āIs Hayden your mother?āĀ
A quick shake of the head, let the other player reply as Ilya egged on, āNo, heās not?ā Making sure to look at Shane in the eye as he let his expression still showcase disbelief.Ā
A roll of the eyes and a predictable Fuck off later, Ilya badgered on, āWho cares what you told Hayden?ā Letting his head delve deeper in the crook of Hollanderās neck, he gave a quick peck as he dragged on the next word, making sure to whisper it in the other manās ear.Ā
āStay.ā
They woke up a bit later, from a nap that rejuvenated Ilya more than any sleep heād had since he was 12. He woke up a bit before Shane actually, but the warmth and presence of him seemed almost unreal as Ilya squeezed the arm thrown around the body on his. Soon enough he could feel the body between his arms stir awake. Letting him get a good view of his surroundings, taking in the view of a smiley sleepy Shane, Ilya broke the silence, going on with Phase Two of his plan.
āIām hungry.ā
āFor what?ā Shaneās sleep-addled voice egged him on. Letting a smirk show on his face, Ilya squeezed his hand on Shaneās peck before replying.
āFor food, pervert.ā Getting up he let his brain activate as he remembered the clothes heād left out for Shane, collecting and throwing them at him. It seems sleepy Shane doesnāt ask too many questions.
Making his way around the kitchen, Ilya pulled out all of the ingredients heād prepped for a tuna melt. Heād had to google around to figure out an easy Canadian recipe, and then google even more to see if Hollander had said anything about liking it, before he bought everything that was needed and prepped it the night before.Ā
And maybe, just maybe Ilya had planned this. He wanted this to be perfect for Shane, with all of his intricacies and tendencies to get anxious. Ilya had finally accepted that he would be willing to keep Shane in his life, in any way that he can for as long as he can. There was no use denying it, he would crawl back to Shane one way or another, had been doing that for a while now, 8 years and counting really. But time was ticking, seconds counting down to whenever it would be that Shane would find someone. Ilya wasnāt egotistical enough to believe heās the only man Shane had been with, but he knows him enough to at least be confident that he didnāt have a habit of just, hooking up. He didnāt treat sex like a meaningless act that gave you quick pleasure. It was more personal to him. So while Ilya didnāt like thinking about Shane with other people, he wanted to be sure that at the very least the Montreal captain would find him comforting and trustworthy. He wantedā no he needed Hollander to feel safe with him. Bringing both plates in the living room was a smart decision as he saw Shaneās shoulders slightly lower, tension leaving his body again. Opening his TV to a well-planned hockey game, he allowed the familiarity of it keep the conversation flowing.Ā
Letting the conversation ebb let it lead to Sveta and a vague skirting around relationships and the future. Heās telling Shane some bullshit about finding someone. He hasnāt been looking anyways. Wouldnāt even know what the future holds for him in any aspect but hockey really. So Ilya quickly follows it with a well-known phrase.Ā
āBut you know me. Iām lazy soā¦ā letting the sentence hang in the silence didnāt last long as Shane immediately replied.
āI donāt know that side of you at all.ā Turning to the left to look at the man sitting next to him, Ilya let his eyes roam across Shaneās messy bed hair filling his vision alongside scattering freckles, as he felt a smile pull at his cheeks and a warm feeling fill his heart to the brim.Ā
Beeping permeated the air as he got up, mentioning for Hollander to stay where he was. No need for two people to get two plates of tuna melt, thatās what he has hands for. One for the food and one for the captain of the Montreal Metros. Sitting back down allowed both men to start finally eating. When heāll look back to this in the future, Ilya will realize the absolute bullshittery he was trying to pull just to ask Shane if he had ever been interested in women. Cemented by the fact that he continued the conversation after making sure to tell Shane that he only liked him for his body. Thankfully he was saved by the ringtone of his phone, unthankfully it was Grigori.
His thumb pressed the button and his ear soon was filled with Grigoriās frustrated tone. He kept asking Ilya questions, questions which seemed meaningless in their nature. Asking Ilya why he hadnāt talked, when he just called him yesterday, not remembering Polina, and even worse somehow, not remembering Alexei. Alexei, who Ilya sent money to every month to bribe him in order to stay with his sick father. No matter how much he tried to reason with the other man on the phone a continent away, he couldnāt get through to him.
āFather, stay calm.ā the string of what he can now recognize as fear in his fatherās voice, did not seize. Taking a deep breath in and clenching his fist, he did what he could do.
Locking eyes with the modern painting heād bought a year ago after seeing them in a stupid interior design catalogue, he nodded to himself as he kept speaking to Grigori, āI will call Alexei. I will call him.ā
Closing the phone soon thereafter, Ilya started sliding down his list of contacts until he reached Alexeiās. Pressing it quickly, he put the phone on his ear as he held his breath listening to the ringing. As soon as the call picked up Ilya felt his hackles rise alongside his tone, āWhere the fuck are you? Dad is alone and heās freaking out.ā
Breathing in deep, he felt himself wound up even more, āI fucking pay you to be there with him, you asshole!ā Closing the call, he heard his own words echo around the room, as Ilya took in deep breaths. This day was for Shane. Pulling himself together, he walked out into the living room and quickly sat down.
Keeping some light talk around, Ilya could feel the almost awkward tension lingering around the room. Which is exactly why he felt a breath escape him as Shane asked, āHow is your father?ā It might as well have put a chokehold on his heart as he felt it stop, turning to the player next to him.
Wandering eyes passed in between honeyed ones as he pressed, āAh, you speak Russian now?ā Shane averted his eyes as a brief chuckle escaped him, āI know the word for father.āĀ
The horrible thing is, Ilya knew Shane did it out of care. He was sweet and honest and so open. Ilya thinks, few things Shane can say or do, will ever be able to actually hurt him enough to be angry at the other man. Before he knew it, a smile had stretched across his cheeks as he stared at the man in front of him doing the same, seeing his freckles shift like constellations. Pulling Shaneās head towards him, Ilya let it lay on the crook of his neck, as he felt his own hand involuntarily start stroking fluffy dark strands as his lips caressed the same spot. Few things in life have ever managed to calm him like this.Ā
Before both men knew it, theyād already started getting swept in the next wave of arousal. Pulling Shane on him, he felt his finger dig into hard muscle as his eyes dragged to follow the trail of freckles up Shaneās body.Ā
In his household in Russia, Ilya grew up, in what most would consider a religious upbringing. While his father never cared to actively practice anything remotely Catholic, he made sure to keep it loadedĀ as a lifestyle that they lived by, for any prejudice they tended to uphold. When his father mentioned religion to him it was used as a weapon as a master of destruction. But Irina, quiet, calm, beautiful, sad Irina, used it as a vessel that could help her stay afloat. She carried the hands around her neck and practiced the prayers under her breath. She used it for salvation, or survival. She hoped itād be enough to keep her in this tangible, harsh world, enough to keep her here for her sons. Whenever he caught her looking out of the window, both hands clutching the cross around her neck, whispers carried in the walls of a cold, static house, Ilya would think that maybe his mama at least had something that brought her peace.Ā
After her death, he had been the only person willing to keep any of her things, he had clutched her cross in his small hands and whispered to it. Nothing ever came out of it, so now he held it close to his lips whenever he would remember her. Heād never been able to replicate the reverence it seemed to bring his poor mama. Until now. Looking up at the man above him, all rumpled hair and ruddy cheeks, heat transferred through their bodies as plush lips stayed slightly open enough to feel puffs reflecting against Ilyaās own lashes. He let it pull him over, let it speak for him, as the name Shane escaped the confines of his mind, in a heated breath across the flushed manās cheek. As if that wasnāt enough, his ears heard the sweet cadence of Shaneās voice calling his name.
Ilya.
Next thing he knew they could hear their own heartbeats in their ears as they tried to catch their breath, leaning towards each other subconsciously. The moment Ilya readied his arms to finally move and embrace the man on top of him, he felt Shaneās body tense. A second later he blinked as harsh lights filled his vision. Shane was now standing at the other side of the couch, looking somewhere in between the cushions as he shook his head. I canāt and Iām sorry filled the air as Ilya felt his heartbeat rush to his ears again and adrenaline shake each working limb. He could fix this.
āHollander.ā
He had to fix this. He would do anything to do so. Extending his right arm towards Shaneā no, towards Hollander Ilya tried again. He has to try again, āHollander.ā
His heart clearly hadnāt gotten the message yet, as it seemed set on making Ilya run through a marathon sat down, but somewhere deep down he could feel his mind retreat. Its jarring voice in his head saying something too close to I told you so.Ā
As the last Hollander left his lips, Ilya felt himself hollow out, like a marionette that had itās strings cut the second his front door slammed shut.Ā
Rozanov doesnāt know how long he stood there for. All he knew was a bit after, his body stil retained the heat of Hollander. If he had been a bit more actively conscious heād try something stupid just to not let the heat escape. But he knew this was the last time. He got all he could, he could never have more. After all, anything he wanted Ilya lost.Ā
The sun mustāve set at some point. Getting up, he felt each limb move towards the bathroom, not trusting himself to open any lights. Opening the door to one of his cabinets he took out a small towel, wetting it before running it on his abdomen, effectively wiping any remaining proof of the past 24 hours. The tiles were cool under his feet as he wiggled his toes in an attempt to get back some sort of feel in them. Walking back to his room his eyes caught sight of a stupid brown jacket. He couldnāt do this right now. Or maybe ever. Shutting off any remaining light, Ilya got under the covers holding Shaneās smell as he moved his body to lay on the left side of the bed, hugging the pillow there close to his chest. As long as he ignored the outside world, any responsibilities would reflect off the duvet, as he used it almost like a shield. Smushing his face on the pillow between his arms, Ilya let himself hide, in somewhat of a fetus position as he muffled his mouth and let, what heād later deny, a few tears wet the fabric under him. Darkness swallowed him at some point, and Ilya Rozanov drowned.Ā
The season didnāt wait or pause on anybody. It was an unstoppable force, with no immovable object. Months passed by as Ilya got back into the swing of night outs and intense workouts. The boys had been complaining of the drills heād spun on them, but lazy men didnāt win cups. So he kept the suicide drills and the night outs and the alcohol and the women. Or more accurately, he'd hoped heād kept the women. The few times he did, his brain would conjure up pictures of bitten lips and glassy eyes. It didnāt matter anyhow, the most important thing in Ilyaās life was hockey. The name Shane Hollander did not pass rounds around him unless they were up against the Montreal Metros.Ā
So imagine his fucking shock when heās hearing gasps around the gym followed by names that sound scarily like Shane Hollander and Rose fucking Landry. Whoever that was. Pulling Connorās phone in his hand, Ilya felt his heart stop as he saw Hollander hand in hand with the worldās most perfect woman. Of course, of course even the people he chooses to stay in his life exude the absolute perfection that he maintains. Landry was a beautiful, relatively tall woman. Gorgeous blowout waves framed her stunning symmetrical face, that even Ilya could recognize from hit movies. He couldnāt do this. He canāt violently oscillate between these stupid fucking emotions, so when the wheel falls to anger, he lets it consume him.
The club was what he needed. He needed a loud, hot place that drowned his thoughts and made his ear drums bleed and his liver scream for help. Wearing another button up that was practically unbuttoned, he led the way to the entrance of the closest club in Montreal. The lights flashed violently between reds and blues, merging together in an almost nauseating purple. The air was stagnant and hot, the bodies around him making it worse. Walking towards the bar Ilya went through his well learned routine of ordering and apologizing for his rowdy teammates. Heād be halfway to Narnia in a bit with the amount of shots heād ordered. So leaning against the bar top he let his eyes roam free around the sea of bodies. Thatās all that people tend to be in places like this. This is probably the reason why it takes his brain a bit to catch up to the vaguely familiar face staring at his from across the bar. Heād seen this man somewhere, he just had to remember whereā
Miles.Ā
If Miles was here, a few steps behind him, Rose Landry would show up. Turning around Ilya quickly started scanning the room, because he did not care about Landry and her stupid friend Miles. But if she was here, that could only mean one thing. Greyish tinted eyes quickly caught sight of a boring, plain white shirt. A white shirt that was currently being dragged by the wandering hands of Rose Landry. Ilya didnāt really need to let his eyes wander any higher to know who that abdomen belonged to. Who those hands, clutched on Roseās small waist and perfect sparkly dress belonged to. Against his own accord however he also saw the wandering hands of fucking Miles as his eyes got caught to darkened orbs. Their gazes locked as Ilya quickly started grinding next to the gorgeous blonde woman who showed up in his arms. This did not get to affect him, especially after clearly receiving the message of how little it affected Hollander. Making sure to drag his mouth across the nameless womanās throat he kept his eyes locked. If the sight of glassy eyes made him feel a curl of satisfaction, good, thatās exactly what he wanted. Hollander did not get to feel anything, not right now, not after Boston.Ā
Next thing he knew the other man had broken the eye contact, giving a small, what Ilya could tell even from here, extremely complacent smile to Rose as he scurried out of the room. Or maybe heād be in the bathroom. It doesnāt matter. Ilya could have anybody he wanted and he wasnāt picky. There was nothing special about Hollander. Nothing special about him as Ilya ended up going to his hotel room alone, no teammates informed. Nothing special about him as he opened the showerĀ and let himself drown in it, imagining smooth skin spanning across a sensitive neck. Nothing special about him as he felt his chest cave in deeper and plop his heart on the bathroom tiles. As he dried himself as fast as he could and took out the bottle of vodka in the hotel fridge. As he sipped horrible sips of poison and let it drag down his throat.Ā
He didnāt know what he wanted.
He knew exactly what he wanted.
Ilya didnāt get to have what he wanted. He never did.

When he was 14, Ilya was the best player they had. They won matches and cups. They won and won and sometimes lost but mostly won. When he had to skip classes because of the matches, the older guys in the team introduced him to cigarettes.
When he was 15, he had gotten used to Polina in the house, but neither did he or she care about the other. The only one who cared about him was Svetlana. His best friend and the girl he hoped to maybe marry one day. His dad would maybe finally be proud of one of Ilya's choices, something having to do with the family name and legacy, especially since Svetlanaās dad was a great hockey player. That same year, he and Svetlana hooked up for the first time.
When he was 16, he told her he thought boys were as pretty as girls and let her introduce him to Sasha, who heād only seen in passing when his trainer was pulled to the side. That same year Ilya hooked up with Sasha.
When he was 17, Ilya found himself in Canada, a new contract signed with the Russian team for juniors and a promise for a future in hockey in a team here in North America.
His travel had been full of hectic days of training and keeping up appearances so he thought he deserved a little treat. Quickly dressing up after the shower following practice, he picked up his jacket and started walking to the back of the building, hand digging in his right pocket for the packet he always keeps there.Ā
The door pushed open easily, rattling and making a high pitched sound. He paid no mind to it or the sound of it slamming behind him as he leaned into the wall next to some bricks. The cold here felt familiar, it felt a bit like home. Dragging out the packet he quickly takes out one cigarette with his right and his lighter with his left. Holding the cig by his lips he passes the lighter to his dominant hand as he repeatedly tries to make it work. Cursing filled the space in the alley.Ā
It just wouldnāt light up.
The familiar sound of the door slamming shut allowed Ilyaās eyes to trail to the boy currently walking up to him. He knew this boy of course, he couldn't escape him. Every time Rozanov was mentioned it would be followed by Hollander, and vice versa.
Shane Hollander was speaking to him and reaching out his hand. Looking down at the hand, Ilya took notice of thin, nimble fingers curling into his in an almost practiced pressure. Shane immediately retreated his hands in his pockets while gesturing to Ilyaās cigarette that he had finally managed to light.
With a slight stutter Shane was gesturing to the stick. āOh, Iām not sure youāre supposed to smoke here.āĀ
Ilya's eyes lingered on his face. Freckles.Ā
Feeling the silence become even more stilted as Shane started shifting from one foot to the other Ilya decided replying was worth it.Ā
āOkay.ā
Hollander tried to talk a bit more, but if he had to be honest he was tired and didnāt want to focus on finding the English words to reply.Ā
āAnyways I should go,ā Hollander said as he reached for another handshake. āTheyāre waiting for me, but uh- , ā Ilya let his hand hang there for a second too long, āGood luck on the tournament.ā Deciding to put the boy out of his misery he reached out.Ā
Tracking him as he entered the building again he gathered up the energy to chirp at the other player, āYou will not be so nice when we beat you.ā As if that struck a nerve Shane immediately replied, āThatās not happening.āĀ
With a nod they both turned away from each other. āSee you in final.ā
And if Ilya Rozanovās eyes trailed after the moving figure, that was nobody's business but his own.
Cute.
The following months were a whirlwind of contracts and handshakes. Every breath, movement or thing that came out of his mouth was monitored, practiced and approved by Grigori, who was tagging along. The closer the day of the drafting came the busier he got. And everyday Ilya would only hear Hollander, Hollander, Hollander. So when the day arrived and he was the first pick, Ilya could confidently say that the smile he had on his face this time was real.Ā
Soon after the clapping had finished the organizers motioned for the boys to come to the front to handle pictures. Ilya had been chosen by the Boston Raiders, a good, strong, extremely promising team, and after him, Shane Hollander was chosen by the Montreal Voyagers. Quickly holding the shirt that they passed to him, Ilya positioned himself in the middle of the two young men and held up his finger. First, he had been chosen first. The flurry of movement on his right caught his attention as he sneaked a glance to the boy next to him. A cluster of freckles sat right in the middle of Hollanderās tense but pretty face. The flashes of the camera helped him refocus. After that whole ordeal was done, everybody scattered, as a hand caught his arm and started pulling him towards the second floor.
āThe Boston Coach is waiting for us, get it moving.ā looking at Grigoriās face Ilya felt the familiar cold that dimmed his excitement. Being the best was what Grigori always worked for, so why wasnāt he even a little bit happy about Ilya? Such questions had lost their meaning long ago, and he thought heād gotten used to this indifference. Shaking his head slightly, Ilya set his eyes forward towards the steadily approaching man. He had a giant grin on his face as he slapped Ilyaās shoulder in excitement. āSuch a promising young man, ā the Boston trainer was looking at him as he was speaking and shaking his hands with both Rozanovs. Ilya was tuning out already, he wasnāt allowed to speak after all and heād mastered the art of nodding at the correct time. Politely drinking the glass that was handed to him, he started looking around. For some reason his eyes started drifting below the balcony they were standing at only to catch Shane Hollander seemingly in the same situation as him. Before he knew it Hollander looked upwards and their eyes met. He simultaneously had a lost, yet determined look to him that was honestly intoxicating. When Shane turned his head away to nod at the man in front of him, Ilya decided to take that as a cue to do the same.Ā
āWeāre not passing on a kid this strong with those hands, not in Boston, Mr. Rozanov, ā the man in front of him politely laughed before continuing, āHeās a very natural number one pick. Congratulations, Ilya.ā Smiling politely, Ilya could already recite his fatherās next word by heart.Ā
āHe is very strong, but he needs discipline, ā Turning to look at Grigori he felt the words already rising up his throat, choking him, āHe can be, how you say, lazy.ā
Thatās all he ever was.Ā
āI promise to work very hard for you.ā
Today was done for him, doesnāt matter how Grigori wanted to play the puppeteer, soon heād be back in Russia and Ilya would have to deal with these interactions on his own.
āYou listen. Don't speak. You understand?ā nodding absentmindedly, Ilya tuned out again.
As soon as the event was done, they entered the first taxi they managed to find and started going to the hotel. Thankfully, the event organisers had booked two different rooms for Ilya and Grigori, as he had no interest in hearing his fatherās lectures and rants. The second the car stopped Ilya was already out of it and putting his hand in his pocket to feel for the hotel room card he held there. Pressing the elevator he turned to wait for Grigori to walk up to him. Silence held itself between them. They had nothing to speak for. In the blink of an eye they reached their floor and entered their respective rooms.
All his father had said to him today was move here, go there, donāt speak, listen, nod, do this and do that and this is about Russia, Ilya. Itās always about Russia and Rozanov. His mama wouldāve been proud. She wouldāve been so proud and she wouldāve hugged him and told him she loved him and heād tell her how much he loved her and that he did everything up until now for her. A ping from his phone caught his attention, as he inserted the card so the lights of the room would finally open. Taking off his jacket Ilya threw his phone on the bed and then himself. He wasnāt entirely sure how long he spent there, before finally turning to look at his phone.
Alyona:Ā
I knew you could do it! I am so proud, Ilya!
He stared at the message as the phone turned off from inactivity, his heart finally feeling the flutter of a beat.
Ā Alyona:
She wouldāve been so proud of you Ilya, her little prince.
And if his heart felt raw and his brain felt heavy and his eyes teared up, no one would know but Ilya.
Soon after, he undressed and dug around his suitcase for something comfortable to wear. A tanktop and sweatpants, no matter what the people said, were just about the most comfortable thing anybody could wear and it had nothing to do with Eastern Europe.Ā
And his intentions after laying down were to sleep and be ready for tomorrow, but his brain just wouldnāt shut up. Suddenly Ilya remembered that a sports organization booked this hotel, so there had to be a gym here. The popcorn ceiling could be entertaining only for so long. Filling his water bottle with tap water, because apparently people trusted the officials here, Ilya quickly wore his sneakers and pocketed his phone and key card before going to the elevator. Walking to the receptionist who looked like a tired young man not much older than himself, he just roughly asked, āGym?ā and the guy immediately pointed at the sign in the corner.
Going down the stairs that lead underground, Ilya kept following the signs until he saw the gym, taking notice of the open light and the sound of a machine running. Someone else was here. As if life was taking the piss, his eyes catch onto the hunched back of Shane fucking Hollander on the bicycle. Letting his eyes drag down the body of the other player Ilya thought that actually, this was exactly what he needed.Ā
Sitting down on the bicycle right next to Hollander, Ilya started upping the speed. He doesnāt think the other boy has noticed who he is yet, but heās definitely recognized the challenge.Ā
Up, up, up. The only sound that could be heard was the whirring of the pedals and panting. When one of them would go faster the other would catch up and go even faster, until it became a cycle of positive feedback. Finally, as if Hollander had enough, he abruptly closes the bicycle and jumps off of it, sitting himself down on the floor, Ilya deciding quickly to follow suit.
Letting his legs stretch out, Ilya opened his water bottle and started chugging. His eyes never strayed from Shaneās as the other boy finally got the courage to keep the contact. If Ilya was right, and Ilya was never wrong, he could see a clear thread of attraction from Hollander. Pushing his water bottle towards Shane he could see his eyes tracking it, but made no move to take it. A quick shake of the swishing liquid made him prop up. Pushing himself to catch Ilya's bottle allowed Ilya himself to drag his hand across Hollanderās. He could clearly see a spark of confusion from the other man but that was about it. Hazel eyes followed the path of the water as Shaneās Adam's apple bobbled with every chug. When he let his hand fall, probably scared to finish the whole bottle, Ilya mouthed a small āmoreā.
Deep, curling satisfaction warmed him. Hollander didnāt even hesitate, he just acted pulling the bottle to drink the remaining water, already so trusting and pliant.
When the water bottle was reached out to him, Ilya dragged his hand atop the other boyās finger one more time. Itās as if Ilya was flirting with a dense, adorable rock.
He remembers talking and Shane answering, but the thing that stuck with him was the tension in the room. Shane Hollander was magnetic.
Russia lost the match the next day. Yet the only thing crossing Ilyaās mind was Shaneās little āSee you in Octoberā. Heād make sure they met before that.
It was remarkably easy to get in contact with the people in charge of marketing this season. A quick talk with the Boston PR intern had led him right into the hands of the manager, who seemed surprised by Ilyaās interest in this. Immediately after, heād fallen right into the lap of the newest marketing stunt. It was no wonder really, the hockey world was eyes and ears open for anything regarding Rozanov and Hollander before the start of the season, so a few strings being pulled here and there, a phone call away and a signature down, Ilya Rozanov was about to do a joint photoshoot with the one and only, Shane Hollander.Ā
It was relatively dark outside when Ilya arrived there, they could only do this after practice and there was no way any of the boys would be willing to skip training when this is their debut season. So having a quick shower, he quickly towel dried his hair and got moving. Walking through the ring a man quickly flags him down and starts speaking something about the new prospects and expectations and something about playing right into their hand and gaining some sort of view of a ship. Nodding in intervals Rozanov understood that the photoshoot was to be filmed in uniform so he set out to get dressed in a fresh set of clothes. The changing rooms were different in any stadium but their formula stayed the same, it was fairly easy to find where he was pointed and get dressed. He wondered when Hollander would be coming.Ā
Heās probably super early and already dressed, is the assumption Ilya made about the other man. He seemed the type to have everything about his day set out and follow it religiously.
Keeping his helmet in his hand, Ilya set out to ask if he even needed it on. Donāt they care about hair and stuff in photoshoots? Thatās what he saw from Sasha anyways.Ā
Feeling the ice underneath his skates brought a feeling of relief to him. His shoulders untensed as he confidently made his way to the corner where a man with an obviously big camera was wildly gesturing, āRozanov! Youāre ready, thatās perfect, ā the man started pointing at the middle of the ring, āShane should be here in 5 minutes.āĀ With a curt nod Ilya skated alongside the edge of the rink to wait. And he didnāt have to wait for long before his vision filled with blue, white and freckles. Brown eyes scattered around as if taking in everything the rink could give even when there was no match at play. Heās felt those eyes before during the game, he had to get them to look over.Ā
The man from before quickly beckoned both boys towards the camera, the swooshing of blades cutting the ice following. A small explanation later and both players were center ice in front of each other, in the position of a face-off. As soon as they lowered Ilya searched for big brown eyes but instead of meeting them, they seemed to be focused somewhere below. Quickly following the direction the only thing that met him was the neutral line on the ice.
āYou look pretty.ā Even Ilya could hear the accent trailing after him. Immediately on the defensive Hollander piped back āYouāre wearing make up too.ā Chuckling a bit, Ilya let his shoulders hike into a shrug. He couldn't get over how dense this boy was. āYeah but I donāt look pretty.ā A gorgeous and frankly insultingly charming red backgrounded dark freckles and Ilya felt himself fighting a smile.
A loud voice cut the air, making both boys slightly flinch. āOkay guys, we need rivalry and heat. We need tension. People want to look at this poster and immediately pick up their remote to watch the newest match. Yeah?ā a clap followed, āLetās do this!ā
And so the photoshoot dragged on for hours, different positions and plays followed every now and then with a make up crew right on their heels. By the end Ilya honestly felt himself becoming delirious as laughter spilled out. He would've been more annoyed at himself, if he hadnāt seen Hollanderās face slowly break into small laughs that seemed to spill out uncontrollably.Ā
It must be sunny in Russia.
As the photoshoot ends Ilya follows Shane into the lockers to shower and change into the clothes he came in with. The warm water quickly fogged up the tiles as both boys showered with practiced movement. Feeling eyes on him, Ilya turned to look. He is always right after all. And well heās also just a man.Ā
Shane Hollander may have said not here, but he sure as hell didnāt run away. Not when Rozanov walked in on him dropping his shoe the second their eyes locked in the dressing room, towel hanging low.
āWell if I come to 1410 tonight at 9 oāclock?ā
āI might open.ā
āI might knock.ā
Russia has always been cold but never loud. There is a certain air that befalls the people walking its streets, it's heavy and pressuring. It sits on your shoulders hoping for you to crumble. The thing is, it's not quiet there either. There's a faint hum that glides through the cobblestones, whispers carried through it. When you enter a hockey match however, there is no hum. There is just noise. Loud and all encompassing from every direction, colliding with the plastic barriers. The people talking, the ones chanting, music fills the corners of the hall.Ā
Loud noises quiet the brain. There is no need to think, only go through the routine. Ilya has it memorized at this point, heās been preparing for this his whole life. For the first time in a long while, his heart started to beat.
Putting on his gear then hearing the Raiderās captain make a speech made Ilyaās skin buzz under its surface in anticipation. They could hear the announcers yelling each teamās name, followed by each man gliding as soon as skates touched ice. The first thing you register is the cold and bright surroundings. Soon enough sound reaches you, with a slight delay. As if something is pulling his attention to the other side of the rink, Shane Hollander joins the fray, head down, deep breaths and a look of calm on his dark eyes, lashes fanning on them almost like a shield.Ā
Before they know it, the match has started and all eyes are on the newest rookies of each team who go in circles around each other like sharks do to prey.Ā
A goal scored here, a goal scored there. Every time the puck hits the net, its followed by the opposite team retaliating.Ā
It's 3 - 3 when Rozanovās coach sends him out, this time for a face off. Breaths slowing down, Ilya turns to go to the middle of the rink, eyes getting caught on familiar looking freckles. If he gets flashbacks of a hotel room, brown doe eyes looking up at him and blushing cheeks, thatās his problem. Well, Hollanderās as well, he assumes.
āthe last face-off of the game.Who are they sending in? This guy seems to have some ideas.
Are they gonna do this? Are they gonna give the people what they want?
Desjardins is gonna give it to them. Is Reilly gonna do this too?
Are we gonna see⦠Listen to that crowd! And there you have it!
Itās Ilya Rozanov versus-
āShane Hollander, will you disappoint them?ā Green orbs traced the constellations on flushed skin. He quickly felt his eyes trace the mouth guard Hollander was holding outside of his mouth, lips flush against the transparent plastic, wiggling as the man shook his head and replied, āNo.ā The worst part was that he didn't mean to be distracting.
No more words were needed, the whistle blew and the puck fell.
Later in the comfort of his own room, Ilyaās eyes were locked on the post game interview, where a sweaty, clearly satiated Shane seemed to glow with his stupid, perfect little french.Ā
As if the loss wasnāt enough, a phone ring sliced through the air.Ā
Alexei
Taking a deep breath in, he pressed accept.
The phone call followed a well-known and practiced script by now, demands being made and slurs thrown around. The rising tension let both men elevate their voice, tense words being thrown across continents. Except, Ilya was barely a man, he was just a boy, in another continent, in another city being thrown around with foreign words and assumptions. His older brother asking for money for drugs just as he had his baby. His dad picking up the phone, authority bleeding through harsh words followed by periods of confusion. He was a boy fighting other peopleās battles when he never asked to do so.Ā
He had tried fighting someoneās battle once. It ended in cold fingers and bottles of pills.Ā
Closing the lights around the hotel room, Ilya laid down under the covers. He pulled them over his ears, over his head. If he closed his eyes and waited, he could act like the weight of the blanket would feel like his mamaās arms.Ā
4 months passed more or less the same. The season was going well for the Boston Raiders. Alongside that, a new matchup started to take place.
Team North America versus Team Europe.Ā
Ilya had woken up that day with alarms and calls coming through his phone. The second he had arrived through the door, heād been shoved in a suit as a woman moved his face left and right to put, what he assumed to be makeup on him. Another pair of hands quickly started attaching a little microphone to his jacket while shoving him towards a loud room, with a huge camera right in front of the table he would sit in, alongside none other then Shane Hollander.Ā
Touching the tie around his neck, Ilya moved it around. It felt borderline suffocating, right against his neck as his eyes involuntarily blinked when flashing camera lights suddenly activated.Ā
Press conferences were on Ilyaās top 3 list of most hated things he had to go through in life. The environment was stuffy and loud and the English was long and confusing. Aimed at him like a gun rather than a helping hand. Cocked and loaded, ready to shoot the moment silence filled the air for too long.Ā
Dark eyes turned at him, almost as if asking for permission. Seeing the out Hollander gave him, Ilya replied with a small nod. Hollanderās calm cadence quickly filled the space, allowing him to breathe. He spoke confidently, as if he had been trained to do this his whole life. He shook his head, gave a small smile that exuded charisma as his shirt was slightly unbuttoned, no tie in sight.
A small shuffle and an accidental bump later, Ilya let his shoe knock on Shaneās more deliberately, immediately feeling Shane press completely against him.
The ice was breathing on Ilyaās face during the shot accuracy competition. Eyes locked on the pucks at his feet, he made quick work to shoot them as soon as the buzzer hit his ears.Ā
āŠŠ°Š²Š°Š¹!ā a grin stretched across his face as he saw the blinking numbers on the screen. He had just broken Scott Hunterās record. Not for long however, as Shane Hollander quickly followed in his footsteps and broke Ilyaās newly broken record. He let his eyes follow the other man as he skated to the side and waited until Hollander sat down.Ā
Ilya reckons that no matter how many years pass or whatever the future holds for him, nothing will exhilarate him as much as Hollanderās averting eyes and blushing cheeks.Ā
ā1221.ā
A knock followed as soon as the game ended. A door opened and was promptly pushed as Shane Hollander entered the room, with what Ilya presumed was annoyance, which he had no interest picking up on as he saw the furrowed eyebrows and glaring eyes. Theyād had a kitten that lived in the neighborhood when he was young, that would follow you, meow once or twice and then stare into the depths of your soul for you to feed it. Shane reminded him of it.
And Ilya canāt really be faulted for getting caught up in the moment and allowing time to slip through his fingers as he felt those same fingers caress Hollander's unfairly soft skin.Ā
Looking at the other man slowly unfolding his clothes and getting dressed, he felt a small grin pull at his lips. When Shane finished getting dressed and turned to look at the space next to Ilya, he let himself walk towards him, beckoning for his phone.
Lily and Jane came to life.
Quickly writing down the contacts to send a message to his own phone, so they could save each other's numbers, Ilya could feel the heavy gaze fall on him. He let himself not catch it, it seemed Hollander wasnāt too comfortable with eye contact. As if he couldnāt get more endearing.
The next few weeks were filled with stupid promises and lots of unreciprocated, one sided sexting. If it was anyone else, Ilya thinks heād have given up after the third āif I was there what would you be doing?ā, but something about Hollanderās genuine replies and innocent confusion had utterly captured Ilyaās dick. No heart involved of course, they were casual after all.
The back and forth texting never seemed to stop, but it started dwindling a bit the closer the Rookie of the Year award seemed to be approaching, and with it so did Russia.Ā
From the moment Ilya stepped foot in the stuffy building rented by the MHL, he knew he had not won. It wasnāt necessarily a surprise either, between their goals, assists and general public persona it was relatively obvious who was winning tonight. In the quiet of the rooftop, as he smoked a cigarette, he could admit to being proud almost, for Hollander. He was probably downstairs getting hugged by friends and family, that seemed to be set on being there for all of his accomplishments and more. The older players probably had pulled him in for drinks and even more celebrations. Which is why he was only a bit confused, when he heard the door open behind him and saw Shane approaching on his left.
Turning to give him a quick look, he was met with prominent freckles and glassy, brown eyes. Hair slightly askew, as if heād run his hands through it, face pinched tight and tie let loose. He looked good. And drunk. It wouldāve made Ilya laugh and tease if it had been any other day. The buzzing under his skin made it pull tighter across his body as Shane raised his voice. On a bad day Ilya Rozanov felt like a mannequin with a skin suit over it to convince everyone he was normal. On a good day, he didnāt think. And he knew, that no matter how many times he insinuated Russia to Hollander, he wouldnāt get it. Yet, every time he still tried. Both men had barred their teeth and IlyaĀ had retaliated in a harsher manner, and Hollander, sweet and naive Hollander, had stayed there and left his underbelly unprotected, so Ilya thought he could have one more thing before he had to go and fight and scratch in the Russian winter. As Hollanderās fancy shoes clicked on the tiled floor, he threw away his cigarette, followed down the stairs and pushed Hollander onto the wall.Ā

In a corner of Russia, a life was born. Bundled up in blankets and rags, the walls of the house soaked up the cries of a newborn baby girl. When put in the arms of her mother, peace fell across the room.
Quiet, calm peace.Ā
Quiet, calm Irina.
It may have been cold in Russia but the sun pushed through the fog and the clouds just in time to reflect against soft, blonde curls and stark green eyes.
When Irina turned 7, her papa decided to treat her to something new. Hand in hand they walked across the city and stumbled upon a small frozen lake. It was filled with people. They had shoes made of blades and they flew across the water. Like princesses, she thought.Ā
That day she tried ice skating, and Irina glided on ice. Her little heart kept beating in excitement as she felt the wind blow her curls away.Ā
She fell, she got up, she tried again and she skated.
Like a princess.
When Irina was 14, she won the gold medal in the local ice skating tournament. People applauded, her teacher reached for her hand bringing her on the makeshift podium as she was given the medal and a small trophy. Her cousin, Alyona was there, a small bouquet of flowers in her hands as she smiled and ran to hug her. While her family had stopped coming to support her in her ālittle hobbyā, as they often called it, Alyona had never stopped pushing her to go.Ā
Irina had a big family. Brothers and sisters differing in age, a father that grew older by the day and a mother too busy with family to spare her attention throughout all of her children. Her father was a military man through and through, pride, legacy and reputation was what kept him going. He had no plans on stopping now.
Pushing these thoughts away, she breathed in and out. That was a problem for future Irina.
When Irina was 18 she was promised to a renowned officer by the name of Grigori Rozanov. Grigori was 45 years old when he entered her family home asking for her hand in marriage. Asking for her hand was a generous way of putting it, he demanded for the most beautiful daughter with the promise of legacy and respect to her father. Her father hadnāt hesitated in saying her name and agreeing. Irina didnāt speak that day, she looked at the ground, tears threatening to fall and when the deal was agreed upon she braved a look at the man who entered her home and would soon make her leave it. Cold blue eyes briefly turned to her, before turning to her father with a nod and a handshake.Ā
The Rozanovās are a strong family. A good family, worthy of keeping our bloodline.
Or so her father said. She didn't understand what their bloodline had to be so important that they needed to perserve it, her father just worked for the government. It did not matter however. It wasn't her choice.
When Irina was 19 she had her wedding. Both families had gathered at the church awaiting for the assembly to start. Alyona was helping her pin her unruly curly locks, that seemed almost dimmed. The room was quiet as she got ready for her big day. She was quiet as she got ready for her big day. She was tired.
A pair of arms surrounded her. āIrinka,ā Alyona was calling her name, she thinks. Tired greens locked with brown orbs in the mirror. āYou look beautiful, Irinka.ā Her eyes seemed almost gray. Outside the clouds had been pouring rain since the early hours of the morning.
āYou will be ok. Itās going to be ok.ā
Soft hands wiped her eyes, as a stray tear fell on her white dress. She didn't even get to pick it.
When Irina was 20 she was with child. Her first one.Ā
And she was so, so very scared. A year into the life of a wife, now she was being thrown into the shoes of a mother. But Grigori seemed elated, as capable as he was of showing this joy of course. So she thought she could have this one thing, before her body grew to accommodate a new life, she wanted to ice skate. She missed it.
Irina still kept her skates, in a little box she took with her when she moved in. Opening her closet, she reached to the backĀ where the box was laying.Ā A layer of dust had fallen on it, which she wiped as she opened the lid. There they were, stark white and shining silver. Her heart clenched as a small smile pulled at her cheeks. Skates in hand she left the house, following trail to the little lake that started this journey so long ago.Ā
When she arrived there, she quickly shed off her shoes and laced up her skates. The second her feet touched the ice, Irina felt her shoulders relax. She moved along the lake, wind blowing, the smell of snow filling up her lungs, a sense of calm getting to her head.
She skated and she felt free.
Like a princess. She thought.
Minutes passed or maybe even hours, when her calm was shattered.Ā
āIrina!ā a yell pierced through the wind, her heart skipping in fear as a cold feeling washed over her. Shoulders tensing she followed the sound to an angry Grigori standing near the ice. Before she knew it her feet led her to her husband. She doesnāt remember much of that night, an arm yanking her out of the ice as she wobbled from the speed with which she was pulled from on normal ground. She felt as if she was stuck in place as water lapped up her legs quickly.
By the time she would return to that house, she would be drowning in it. She thought.
You are of no use to me if you cannot bear my children-
Irina wanted to close her eyes and let it pull her under.
Nine months later a boy was born, strong and healthy. Grigori was proud, a son is all he wanted. A son bears your legacy and your name.Ā
Alexei cried and so did Irina.
When Irina was 24 she was pregnant with her second child. Alexei was growing into a fine young man. She loved her son, but most days Grigori took him along to teach him about his role young. Tutors, schools, anything to ensure he turned into the man Grigori wanted him to be, so Irina wasnāt able to see him as much.
However with her husband handling Alexei, Irina had more free time than ever. She hadnāt skated since that fateful day, hadnāt been brave enough to try.
But something was pulling her today. With Grigori out of the house she took out her little box, gathered her skates in a bag and trailed to the lake.Ā
Take off your shoes, put on your skates. Lace. Get up on wobbly legs and skate.
Skate and skate and skate. For the first time in years Irina smiled for herself as she felt her curls flailing in the wind. The cold air hugged her.
Maybe Iāll meet up with Alyona today.
On the 15th of June in 1991, in a corner of Moscow, a life was born. Bundled up in blankets and sheets, the walls of the house soaked up the cries of a newborn baby boy. When put in the arms of his mother, peace fell across the room.
Quiet, calm peace.Ā
Quiet, calm Irina.
And bright, beautiful Ilya.
It may have been cold in Russia but the sun pushed through the fog and the clouds just in time to reflect against soft, blonde curls and stark green eyes.
A boy may be the son of Russia, but you Ilya Rozanov, you shall be mine.
Irina Rozanova smiled when green eyes pierced hers as she brushed their noses together. Cooing spread across her room and her heart kept beating.
When Ilya was 7 years old, he remembers waking up to the sound of his mamaās voice. Gentle hands pet his head as a tranquil voice urged him to wake up. He remembers the innate joy he would get whenever Irina would be in the same room. His little body barely contained it, felt it seeping out of his pores. Ilya hopes that on those days his mama also felt it.
āCome on, mamaās gonna show you her third favorite thing ever.ā Irina was already walking up to the closet to pick an outfit for her son. She bundled up that baby as if he was planning on skating to Antarctica, not a small lake near the neighborhood.
Ilya remembers his brain catching onto the words. āWhatās number one mama?ā Irina leaned down, smiled as she pressed a big wet kiss on his forehead. As soon as Ilya had started squirming with echoes of ewws and nos, Irina brought him into a hug, blowing raspberries on his tummy.Ā
āYou-ā another kiss followed, as giggles surrounded the air.Ā āand-ā soft hands touched feathery, tightly coiled curls āAlexei, of course.ā
She helped him quickly get his shoes on and they started their walk towards the lake. Irina held his hand on one side and a small, pretty bag on the other.
The first time Ilya saw people ice skating, he thought they were flying. The blinding white of the snow on the ground, the trees and the smell of it in the air made it feel like magic was involved. His mom confidently walked towards a small stand with a man inside and started speaking to him and he wouldāve quickly noticed that she was renting a pair of small skates for him, if he wasnāt mesmerized by everything happening. By the time he turned around to look at his mom, Ilya was led onto a small ledge as Irina took off his small boots and exchanged them for skates. As soon as she was done with him, Irina started putting on her own skates, hands lacing quickly in a familiar manner, as if sheād done this many times, he realizes now.Ā
That day Ilya Rozanov learned how to skate, and seeing the joy it brought his mama, he learned what it meant to love something with your whole heart.
Like a prince, Irina had thought.
When Ilya was 12 years old, he found Irina Rozanova on the bathroom floor of their mansion dead. In the moment, he didnāt really understand what was happening.Ā
Having realized the raw talent Ilya held for skating, Grigori had quickly put him into hockey programs, where tutors and trainers whispered praise and a promising career. So that day his father was supposed to be meeting with a good friend to discuss Ilyaās future. That day he was supposed to be going with them, but Ilya had learned how to fake a cold young. A cough here and there, a runny nose faked by a bit of crying and a few convincing sneezes were all it took for him to be told to stay at home to get better, as he had a match in the following days. He hadnāt seen his mama since yesterday, already missing her calming hand pushing back on his hair and holding the nape of his neck, so he had a plan. Act sick and youāll have the whole day with mama. Itād be a surprise.
When Grigoriās and Alexeiās voices had lowered to the first floor and he could hear them put on their shoes and coats and make sure they had everything, he had forgone his slippers for his thick socks in order to maximise speed and silence to reach his momās bedroom.Ā
Ilya quietly pushed the door handle, hoping the creaking of the door didnāt reach the voices downstairs. He bypassed clothes and small pieces of paper that littered the floor to look into the bed, where his mama had been staying more and more of the last few years. When he didnāt find her there, he ran to the bathroom, excitedly opening the door, forgetting to knock, something Irina and Alyona had been trying to grill into his head.
However, when he walked in he didnāt see his beautiful mother getting ready for the day. He saw her laying on the ground. Maybe in the moment he wasnāt thinking, but sometimes Ilya is sure that in the back of his mind, he already knew right then and there, that his mother was dead. He remembers flying to her side. She was so cold, and limp and unresponsive. His eyes quickly reached up petting her hair that looked dull in the lighting of the bathroom. He thinks he mightāve been shaking but he didnāt know.Ā
āMama.ā his left hand went at the nape of her neck. Her eyes had a wet sheen to them, almost like she was crying, but now the light didnāt reflect like it used to.
āMama. Mama, wake up. Wake up.ā he fuzzily remembers slowly losing his composure. Little hands shaking her. He recalls vaguely, a loud noise, almost like an alarm surrounding him and tears obstructing his eyes. The sound of footsteps rushing upstairs, soon enough, filling his view.
Distantly he remembers thinking āHuh, they hadnāt left yet.ā
He remembers with a heart cleaved in two, that the thing that was screaming was him.Ā
She fell, she didnāt get up, she couldnāt try anymore. She never skated again.
On January 24 2003, Irina Rozanova had an accident. She accidentally swallowed a bottle of pills.
Maybe only one life was lost that morning in Moscow, but two hearts stopped beating.Ā
Hello, if anyone even sees this. I've been gone for so long and stopped really interacting that I do not know if even my mutuals will see this but I will still write it.
I've been doing uni, which is a bitch. Hoping I'll pass. Anyways I finally managed to write something again and it is a Hollanov fic. I posted it on my ao3 and everything and literally just remembered that I post them here as well. SO yippee I guess.
