an actual morning person
Night person who needs to see a doctor/get your car worked on/go to the bank/buy groceries, etc? You're gonna have to sacrifice sleep for it. Because for some reason it was decided that most places of business should open in the morning and close in the evening. Fewer and fewer places are 24/7. Wanna go for a nice stroll in the park? Tough shit, they close at sundown. Hell, want to just go for a walk in general? Fair chance of being harassed by the cops because being out and about in the dark is "suspicious" behavior. Want something that's not fast food and don't want to/can't cook for yourself? Best we can do is a diner like Denny's or IHOP. Got a loved one in the hospital you want to visit between work and sleep? Either gotta get up early or stay up late to meet visiting hours.
And let's not forget, no matter how little you actually sleep and how much you actually get done, if you're not awake during certain hours it means you're a lazy good-for-nothing. Express a desire for more places open 24/7? Selfish and entitled. Complain about how noisy your neighbors are during your sleep hours? Well you can't expect the world to tiptoe around you. But also you'd better keep it down at night because other people are sleeping!
But don't worry! There are plenty of guides on how to "fix" your sleep schedule out there! You just have to follow a strict, often disruptive routine that you can never stray from even a little or else you'll fall back to your natural sleep schedule lazy, undisciplined ways.
And at that, good luck finding a job that doesn't expect you to be in by 9 AM at the latest. Which means getting up at 7:30 AM at the latest, earlier if you have a commute. Which means getting to bed at 11:30 PM at the latest.
Which means night owls have a straight choice between self-employment/freelance work, with all its insecurities, or constant self-torture. (Oh yeah, sleep deprivation does count as torture, per the UN.)
Being out-of-sync with your natural circadian rhythm increases your risk of mental health disorders, obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, gastrointestinal problems, neurodegenerative disorders (including dementia), skin issues, hormonal issues, and more. Even if we manage to force ourselves into a "normal" sleep schedule, we get poor quality sleep, because our bodies aren't meant to be sleeping at that time. It's a genuine health hazard, yet the world ignores it and tells us to just stop being lazy
"You enjoy the quiet of the night and find you fo your best work then in harmony with your circadian rhythm, stubborn as it is. The dawn choirs in the summer are grim reminders of everything, including that you only see the sunrise if you stayed up all night."
I work nights 7pm-7am, and it is such MASSIVE bullshit that if I want to do anything on my days off I have to sacrifice sleep for the day.
My body literally rebels against me and GIVES ME SEVERE INSOMNIA in a diurnal circadian rhythm that I do not fucking have naturally because my circadian rhythm is reversed.
I function naturally waking up around 2-3 pm, being up for hours and sleeping when my body feels like it (ie the rare 3-4 hour nap a few times a year, or most typically, falling asleep around 6-8 am at the latest the next day)
This is literally how some people function.
That we are not a 24/7 world when we are, for all intents and purposes, EXPECTED TO BE, is fucking bullshit.
I am exhausted and prone to migraines and in pain because my body cannot function the way the societies we've built want me to.
I am sick more easily, I am prone to emotional overflows, I am upset more often, I am snippish in early mornings when I'm waking and not going to sleep, etc etc.
This is not a dig against morning people, this post.
It's a way to educate that y'all aren't the only motherfuckers in the world and you're damn lucky the world revolves around you all in terms of the way it functions because news flash:
Most morning people are neurotypical. Not all, but most.
I forget where I read it once, but there's a theory that people naturally developed different circadian rhythms to protect the whole community - it makes sense in a survivall tribe mindset that some folks would be wired to be most awake during the night to keep watch over everyone else. So people have these variety of natural sleep cycles and yet society is enforcing the singular day-favored cycled.
Due to the 'most morning people are neurotypical' point that's been made, I do wonder if the over sensory and attention to detail parts of neurodivergency is due to adapting to being awake during the night. There's less light so being overly sensory to light makes sense, and you have to pay more attention to your surroundings bc of this and bc that's literally your job to keep people safe while they sleep. Quite a few quiet dangerous predators are nocturnal, so being extra sensitive to sound makes sense. There are generally less people so you start to find too many people overwhelming and can dedicate more time to yourself and your own thoughts. The more I think about it, the more being nocturnal makes more and more sense for those with neurodivergencies. There's probably some research project in there somewhere, but I'm not knowledgeable enough in psychology to know.
Reblogging again to share the results of my immediate hyperfixatiom deep diving, live as it happens:
Autism can result in a mutation in genes that regular melatonin resulting in a 'flat melatonin curve' which means that the body does not send the same level of tired cues at night and may feel sleepier during the day. CRSWD is also very common in those with autism (though autism is apparently rarely considered when just CRSWD is diagnosed) [x]
This source [x] mentions a bunch of stuff in circadian rhythms. Mainly the part about, being more sensitive to sensory stimuli, there may also be a variance on the level of cortisol (stress hormone). It's worded a bit strangely in the article so I'm struggling to put it into my own words, but I think it's basically more sensory input = bad for sleep.
This [x] is a testimony from someone with ADHD who talks about sleep issues (there's a part at the bottom about 'fixing' it but I'm ignoring that as that's not what I'm here to research).
Overall, there's a lot of research been done on neurodivergency leads to bad sleep. Like here's [x] a full article from a neuroscience journal, but I'm struggling to find stuff on 'what happens if we just let people be nocturnal' bc that isn't really an option with today's society! I've found some Reddit discussions from individuals on feeling better when they allow themselves to be nocturnal [x] [x], so there could be some sort of link there, it just might not have been clinically proven.
