People these days have completely ruined the whole concept of enemies to lovers. The whole point of enemies to lovers is that when someone is actually your enemy, you’re the worst version of yourself around them. You tear them apart, or at least you try to, because you can’t stand them. You project all your worst traits onto them, and they do the exact same thing to you.

So we’re talking about a dynamic where, by the time these two people end up in a relationship, they’ve already seen each other at their absolute worst. They both know the other person is a complete piece of shit. They’re a terrible human being. But they’re just as much of a terrible human being as you are, that’s why you’re enemies in the first place.

If you reduce enemies to lovers to “we’re academic rivals trying to get the best grades,” you’ve completely stripped the trope of what makes it work. Your families hating each other while the two of you just go, “You’re stupid.” “Well, you’re ugly.” That’s not enemies to lovers. Enemies to lovers is about two people who have genuinely spent time and effort trying to ruin each other’s lives. And if you take that away, if you remove the fact that there was real, mutual, visceral hostility between them, then the entire dynamic falls apart. It just doesn’t make any sense.

If you’ve never seen the other person’s dark side, if you’ve never seen just how awful they can be when they’re pushed, then what’s the appeal of the dynamic? There isn’t one. Disliking someone isn’t the same thing as them being your enemy. There are plenty of people I don’t like, and I wouldn’t call any of them my enemies.
