This is so amazing. The narration, the (oh so noble) pictures of the great Maou. Thank you so much for posting!
Oh, you are too kind! Truly I blush to hear such praise of my modest efforts.
And another thank you, this time out of character. (I considered going OOC on the blog a couple times but ultimately haven’t yet) I’m honestly just amazed that so many people enjoy my weird meta humor. I legitimately thought I was going to get mass unfollowed on April Fool’s for spamming, so wow that was a pleasant surprise.
(and um, possibly no one will see this because I am a huge lurker when it comes to writing as my actual self, but if not... hi I write fuckyeahtwentyseventhmaou?)
I’ve been reading the Chrestomanci books by Diane Wynne Jones and I’ve just read Charmed Life, The Lives of Christopher Chant and The Pinhoe Egg.
So have some digital and sketchbook doodles! At top Cat things from Charmed Life (also featuring VerySerious!Chrestomanci!Christopher) and then a bunch of doodles from Lives of Christopher Chant. Just Christopher and one Millie.
I want to draw some stuff from Pinhoe Egg, like Marianne and Cat in the attic but I’m so busy ;_;
I just realized I never reblogged this which is ridiculous because I look at it regularly when I want to smile. (if you ever do get the time to draw Marianne and Cat I WOULD BE SO HAPPY but yeah I am really really happy these doodles exist as it is)
They moved through the strange giant black bristles as silently as they could, feet sinking in a little at each step, liquid pooling in their past footprints. Before them lay a great red chasm. ‘Where are we?’ said the girl, her small perky breasts rubbing against the coarse fabric of her shirt. 'I have reason to believe,’ the boy said quietly, 'that we are in the fabled Myrish swamp.’

ive always thought the most revealing line hamlet says about himself (besides “o, what an ass am i”) is the “o i could be bounded in a nutshell and call myself king of infinite space, if it were not that i have bad dreams” bit....
I don't even remember how I got here but this is all FANTASTIC and PERFECT and YES THANK YOU and I wish I had something more intelligent to add at this point but I'm burned out tonight and it's been a while since I looked at the text.
Oh wait, there's the echo of "if it were not that I have bad dreams" in to be or not to be, with "to sleep, perchance to dream, aye there's the rub". I always saw 'perchance to dream' as an ominous line in that light, a kind of surrendering to one's own mind/subconscious that can be a terrible thing if one's mind is distressed and chaotic and generally fucked up enough to make you lash out at other people, which is exactly what Hamlet's already dealing with (only he's intelligent enough that people go right well he's lucid and reasoning, and therefore okay except 'reasoning' is not necessarily equal to 'reasonable' and you don't have to be singing about rosemary to be too clouded with grief to go about your life the way you actually want to be) and so 'for in that sleep of death what dreams may come must give us pause'.

From what I've seen of Utena, frighteningly accurate. Needs more cow(bell) though.
underrated book rec: the darkangel trilogy by meredith ann pierce
answering this top five earlier, i mentioned how utterly formative these books for me, and remembering them lead to checking out the tags for other fans of the series - of whom i found essentially none. and so i’m hoping to change that with this post. this is an epic high fantasy trilogy about a young woman thrown into a battle for the fate of the world in which her kindness is the seed of her growth into a hero; it’s about who can be trusted to rule and why, and the devastating effects and responsibilities that can come with power; and it’s a love story that has haunted me for fifteen years.
Every time he looks at me, I die.
Book 1: The Darkangel - The Darkangel, a vampire of astounding beauty and youth, can only summon his full power when he finds his 14th and final bride. But for Aeriel, whom he kidnaps to serve the wraiths of his brides, there is something about him—something beyond his obvious evil—that makes her want to save him rather than destroy him. The Darkangel—Pierce’s first book, originally released in 1982—was an ALA Best Book for Young Adults, a New York Times Notable Children’s Book, a Parent’s Choice Award Superbook, and a Booklist Best Book of the Decade.
Book 2: A Gathering of Gargoyles - To save her love and the world they live in, Aeriel sets off on a quest across the Sea-of-Dust, to solve a mysterious riddle and gather six magical steeds. Pursued by the White Witch and haunted by her six remaining darkangels, the former slave girl seeks out an ancient oracle who may help her find a way to defeat her enemies.
Book 3: The Pearl of the Soul of the World - All the world’s wisdom and magic resides within the iridescent depths of a small white pearl. “All my sorcery,” the Ancient Ravenna had said of the pearl. “It is left to you to save the world.” But is the pearl powerful enough to enable Aeriel to defeat the White Witch? Aeriel’s people have assembled an army—led by Aeriel’s husband—and are soon to attack the Witch and her darkangel sons. But their cause is hopeless unless Aeriel can unlock the mysteries of the pearl … and of her own destiny.
