One of Jabber's most fascinating character traits to me is his loneliness, and I need people to talk about it more.

What he's looking for here isn't really a fight, at least, I don't think that's the full story. We've established Jabber as this person who forms connections through pain. Rudo and Zanka are friends to him because they've played together, because they've hurt and been hurt by each other.

What I think Jabber really wants, beyond any pain or fights, is a companion. He wants a real friend. He wants somebody by his side who won't leave, won't die, and won't run from him. Someone he can fight with forever.

Who does Jabber have in his life, really? He's an eighteen year old who hangs out with almost exclusively people in their twenties (and 40s, I see you Bundus) who use him for his body and demand he break himself and put himself back together for their goals and missions without really concerning themselves with his wants or need.

Does Jabber have any real friends his own age? Does he have anyone really looking out for him? When he's lonely or hurting in the middle of the night, does he have anyone he can turn to?

Yes, this!!! Exactly!! Jabber is so complex and he's weirdly respectful to people(givers he deems worthy of it anyway but nonetheless). He's one of the first people to be completely upfront with Rudo answering all his questions. Even going as far as to formally introduce himself, full name during battle. Even with Zanka he offers up info about himself with out any hesitation, almost having a normal conversation after the fight between himself and rudo and Zanka.

Even with the second fight with Zanka, Jabber takes the time to lay all the cards out on the table, he doesn't immediately rush him right off bat.

I love how we see that he is a complex individual—displaying many different emotions in and out of battle, he is charismatic, goofy, a lil bit scatter brained, directionally challenged(just like me fr). He's also incredibly sadistic, his battle intelligence off the charts and that the fact that he can come up with ways to experiment and challenge others mid battle is sorely forgotten a lot of the times.

He is also extremely childish and petty, especially when he beats Zanka, getting annoyed that Zanka didn't live up to the fight he preconceived in his head and punishing him for it by stabbing him in the stomach, and of course the famous emitting scene.

And I love that we can see he has a lil bit of a bond with cthoni with her constantly chiding him, and the brief interaction with momoa being him kinda teasing her a lil bit.

That boy yearns for companionship. He also yearns to be acknowledged and praised with how he talks about Zodyl multiple times, yes I know we talk about his masochistic side but he has so much more to him.

It genuinely surprises me how many people forget that Jabber isn't just a masochist, he's a sadist too. The very first time we ever see him, he's smiling while torturing someone. We literally learn he's a sadist BEFORE we learn he's a masochist. 😭 I understand why people latch onto his masochism more, since it's not a character trait you see as often and Jabber leans into it a lot more (which absolutely doesn't make his sadism fade into the background imo. We just don't see him with people he views as weak after his first appearance so he has less reason to be blatantly sadistic. Still, he was very happy to watch Zanka bleeding out and tweaking in pain on the floor.)

Also, I feel like the erasure of Jabber's sadism in janka in particular is probably a way to make it more digestible. Plus, if you take Jabber's comment about Zanka's brutality as a line indicating that Zanka is a sadist, you can slot them into a neat sadist/masochist dynamic. Except Jabber is a sadomasochist, and Zanka would probably only be a sadist. Actually, Zanka has masochistic tendencies since he's always putting himself down, but he absolutely doesn't enjoy pain the way Jabber does at all. I just wish people would forget about his sadism less and stop woobifying him all the time

I don't usually like to get into fandom discourse like this but it's been annoying me for a while with how much of Jabber’s character gets erased in order to make the ship more digestible.

The erasure of Jabber’s sadistic side and his tactical intelligence gets frustrating. Jabber is a such a rich character and it sucks to see him get stripped down to either submissive fem bottom or dominant masc top. Both of which often coincide with the need to make him as masochistic as possible.

A lot of it stems from the need to over correct racist stereotypes of black people and black men in particular. But the issue is the over correction tends to become a caricature.

From the (unfortunately) brief moments we've seen him Jabber is such a complex individual with a seemingly respectful nature towards those he deems worth his time and those he doesn't having their existence ignored. In fact 2 major instances of his sadistic side are interactions with non-givers. 

Jabber is such a refreshing character because of how he is written and it sucks to see so many people take that away from him to make his character as palpable as possible especially since so many of us joined this ship because of the interesting dynamic both him and Zanka bring to the table.

Another note, I really don't like how both Zanka and Jabbers androgyny get erased too.

That's not to say I have beef of ooc headcanons cause I don't. They're fun ways to explore characters. My issue is when people weaponize their hc to start beef when we are all applying non canon attributes to these characters.

I think Jabber with Zanka's collar code would be a menace with it, actually. Like, first he’s just calling Zanka late at night to rage-bait him, but it turns into an insomnia yapper sesh.

Later, he's out on a mission, bored, and calls Zanka to see if he's on a mission too, and it just devolves into him yapping at Zanka, who is of course taking out all his frustrations out on a trash beast. Zanka eventually starts talking back, and it immediately develops into bitching sessions about things they find annoying or fun.

It gets to the point where Zanka can’t sleep without Jabber's voice yammering on, and sometimes he wakes up to the connection still working, and he starts yelling and playing music to wake Jabber up early too, for keeping him up so late. No one can work out if Zanka is going insane or has a new friend, because he’s just yapping in his room all the time, or anytime he’s even slightly alone. Eventually they realise they know more about each other than they do about some of their own team members and TRY NOT TO DWELL ON THAT.

You just can’t tell me they aren’t secretly yapping with each other; that’s just what happens when your freak matches so well that even the mundane stuff is fun to discuss when you know you’ll get fun responses.
