Stiles explanations, still adore him though

Love in a small town is almost impossible to find. You’re seventeen and you’ve known the same people since kindergarten. You dream of diving headfirst into a never-ending whirlwind romance that turns you into someone stronger, bigger, braver. But you’ve been in class with the same ten people since first grade. Life is monotonous and the closest you’ll ever get to romance is in books and dreams, diary entries and movies. But then someone new comes along and he is a sparkling diamond in a bleak coalmine. He picks you out of the crowd and calls you a diamond in the rough. And you like being called a diamond in the rough. You think that he gets you because he listens to punk music and likes the same movies that you do. And there’s this intersection by a gas station and it’s always made you feel sad, because when you’re driving back from being out of town and you see the intersection you know that you’re almost home. Back to a bland reality. But you’ve never told anyone this because you think it sounds strange. Until one day you’re walking by the intersection and he mentions the depressing quality about it. You ask why he feels this way. He says the intersection lets him know his adventure is over. So you swoon and pull him close because you think this means he gets you. And because you’re seventeen and because he called you a diamond in the rough. But people always say that it’s the little things that matter the most in a relationship. And they’re right. Like how even when he’s holding your hand, he’s only ever talking about himself. And even when he’s hearing you he’s not really listening. Seeing you but not looking. Not anymore. And then even after you’re over him you sometimes still have this irrational craving to have him back by your side again. Without him, you don’t embody that small town image of strength and freedom anymore. You don’t go to Friday night football games or hang out with cheerleaders anymore. Missing who you were with him. A diamond in the rough. But then you’re nineteen and out of that small town and you’re falling in love with hundreds of brand new people every single day. Not romantically. You’re just falling in love with the pulse around you. It’s something more transcendent than romance. Agape; that was how the ancient Greeks referred to this kind of love. You walk into a house party and nobody is anything like he was. You thought he was free. But they are so much freer. They are thrashing to experimental ska while a group of kids from the feminist collective sits in the corner, drinking chai and talking about the intersection between queer theory and world peace. You approach a petite girl with dark cat eyeliner and tell her that you like her skirt. She says she likes your jacket, and then you start to talk about synth pop and Catcher in the Rye and your favorite kinds of trees. Her dark hair frames her face like a picture and a few days later you get coffee together. You think that this could be something. She smells like cinnamon and strawberries and she tells you about an opera that she’s writing. And as you watch the animation in her eyes it suddenly hits you. You were never a diamond in the rough. You were always shining, and you just needed something bright enough to reflect your light.
