I totally agree with you! I was able to learn about this campaign during workshop and she did a great job distributing it afterwards. Her infographic was aesthetically please and very informative. I feel like it would be easy for her to continue distributing because she can use the character from her infographic to draw more attention. For example, maybe she can use it in a digital children’s book.

I think her hashtag was clever as well (#letthemBgirls). Because it is different then #letthembegirls, it can gain an unintended, but wider audience. It also stands out more, which when you think about it, her campaign does too.

Presentation Review

If we’re choosing favorites, Haley’s campaign about tattoos in the workplace was definitely my favorite. This issue is one that I could face in the future due to my two tattoos (even though one is on my ribcage and the other is on my foot). I agreed with her standpoint on the fact that tattoos shouldn’t effect whether or not people get the job, the qualifications should determine that. This campaign grabbed my attention the most.

If we’re choosing most effective, i think Hudson’s vegan campaign was stellar. He had a ton of followers and i really enjoyed his meal videos. I also thought how he incorporated snippets of an interview he conducted with his vegan roommate was very effective. I also enjoyed his BuzzFeed posts (as well as the Smart House ad on the side).

Great post! I really enjoyed both these campaigns as well. I remember reading Haley’s second paper during the online workshop. She did a great job with transforming her research into this campaign. My favorite genre of hers was the graphic that displayed people with tattoos covered by their uniforms. It truly opens our eyes to the fact that getting a tattoo doesn’t change a person, nor the work effort they can accomplish.

In my initially response, I also gave props to Hudson for having such an effective campaign. I left the part out about his Instagram videos, but that was proving he was willing to go the extra mile. His presentation made me want to go follow his Instagram page in order to learn more!

Final Presentation Reflection

The presentations shared in class were wonderful. They inspired me and gave me new ideas to help me with my own presentation. I believe that the most effective campaign was the one on Veganism (created by Hudson). First of all, his topic is too interesting to not want to learn more about it. He then did a magnificent job with seeding his message. For example, Buzzfeed was a great way to attract Vegans and even a general public because it displays information in a concise manner. It also displays graphics such as GIFS, which helps gain more attention. He also did a great job with putting each genre on the other two compositions. By this I mean it was smart of him to publish his video on his Buzzfeed article and link that article on his Instagram. I really enjoyed his video as well. It was crafted in a interesting way and it made me want to learn more about vegan recipes. His compositions, overall, were very aesthetically pleasing and I believe that his distribution method reflected that. His marketing and project stood out to me because it is a campaign that he can easily manage outside of this class. It is capable of reaching a lot of people and he might even gain an unintended audience of non-vegans. There wasn’t one thing that I would change about his campaign; I thought it was awesome.

THE DONUT CHALLENGE

Deciding which donut establishment is better is a difficult task. Donuts, in general, are too good to lack deliciousness anywhere. But, after thinking long and hard, I’ve decided to take a stand for Krispy Kreme. I hate to say it, but Dunkin Donuts’ donuts are overrated. Dunkin Donuts, in my opinion, has become a breakfast restaurant where costumers can enjoy eggs, bacon, bagels, croissants, and everything in between. This being said, it’s no surprise that they could care less about how their donuts are made, dealt with, and presented. Krispy Kreme is a smaller chain; therefore, each Krispy shop can bake their donuts with personal touches and add a sprinkle of love. When I buy donuts at Krispy Kreme, I leave the shop with a box of hot, fresh, and delectable donuts. The donuts at Dunkin sit out all day and it is rare to buy one hot from the bakery. The glazed donuts at Krispy Kreme are like heaven. They are airy and contain just the right amount of flake. I can eat five and not even notice. Also, the flavors at Krispy Kreme have been dominating Dunkin’s array of flavors. When I want a donut with a yellow smiley face staring at me, I go to Krispy Kreme. Not only does the frosted face make me happy, but it also makes me forget and not feel as bad for consuming over 300 calories in less than 5 seconds (times that by 4 because I can never eat just one). This has made me extremely sad that I don’t have an endless supply of Krispy Kreme donuts right now. However, Krispy Kreme was founded in 1937 and this makes me believe that I will have the ability to buy Krispy Kreme donuts for at least 79 more years to come.

The message of this campaign is to “shine a light” on slavery and how we need to be aware of it and effective for it. The purpose is to end slavery. The picture on the left is informing it’s audience about an event/persuading us to go, while the picture on the right is simply informing us about slavery. The audience of this campaign are students and faculty. These are the people that walk around campus every day who will see the chalk on the floor or maybe even the poster board outside the library (I think that’s where its placed). The mode is both text-based and visual. The chalk is text-based, but includes a sketched human. The poster board has a lot of words, but it also includes pictures. The medium is print. The rhetorical appeals include pathos, ethos, and logos. The pathos plays with our emotions and persuades us to check out the campaign further. The ethos is utilized through the poster because the composer either included facts from resources or is a professional themselves. This is also an official club at FSU. The logos is simple. There are many facts given to us on the poster board. The composers style is casual, but his/her design is more elaborate. I would say that this composer thought of where to put his/her message beforehand because the chalking is useful. So many people see it daily. For the poster board, the font is big, bold, and eye-catching. This would pull an audience member in to read the littler words. Overall I believe the campaign was clear, but I don’t believe it was extremely effective. Unless this chalk was on every inch of the sidewalk and this poster was sitting outside of every building’s door, the campaign won’t sell. Utilizing social media to spread the message would be ideal.

Viral Marketing

Viral Marketing deals with all sorts of social media that is being captivated daily through some sort of internet interactions, whether it may be twitter, Facebook, or even Myspace. This form of marketing deals with promoting some sort of idea that you want to engage upon through the use of social media. It is done mostly by the individual rather than business because it allows individuals to get the message out. Viral marketing has became one of the prominent ways of communications or even promoting some product through the use of advertisement. This marketing works by you knowing what your doing and having the right mindset for your campaign because in order for people to see this approach, it must capture the audience through your effective display. It needs to be organized, and most importantly your campaign should not use any false slang that could make viewers react in a wrong manner.  Always stay on top of social media because it allows for your product to see if people are looking upon any sort of trend that you encountered upon on the web.

Nice post Brandon. You explained Viral Marketing in a superb way. I smiled when you said Myspace. I haven’t heard about Myspace in forever, but that doesn’t mean we should forget about it when we want to distribute our own campaigns. One of the articles mentioned that we should utilize everyone, and everything, that we have in order for the virus to spread. Let’s not give up on myspace because this includes social media!

I also liked how you added the idea of having the right mindset. Someone who is looking to market through viral marketing, needs to realize that the technique shouldn’t be used to only endorse a product with a short time goal of making money. They need to realize their campaign might fail, or it can blow up in a matter of seconds. They need to create a story and let loose a bit. By this I mean they are allowed to be random, funny, dismissive, and casual.

The last thing that your post righteously added to the technique, was the idea of staying on top of social media. Not only is it important to distribute on them, but like we learned, it is important to remain an active responder and commenter. Don’t leave your viewers hanging unless you want your campaign to end abruptly.

Viral Marketing

Viral Marketing is the act of circulating a product through various medium using just the right tactics to gain momentum from people’s interest. Viral Marketing is supposed to help someone get their product/idea/brand out into the world with minimal effort. If something goes viral, people loved it so much that they decided to share/retweet/reblog/repost it on whatever social media site they’re on. It works by picking the right media for your audience and portraying it in a way that would compel someone to share it with their friends and circulate it through the media. You could do this by invoking some kind of emotion in the person, whether a positive or negative emotion it doesn’t matter, it just needs to invoke the urge to do something with the post they’ve seen. Also, you could do something unexpected or random. I liked the Old Spice commercial in the “15 of the best marketing campaigns” article. It was so random and unexpected and it made me laugh a little. There were a few things that he said to that could easily be catch phrased. Viral marketing works best when all these factors work properly. You chose the right audience, you picked the right medium, like facebook versus twitter or tumblr, and you made the information appealing enough for someone to feel like it’s too good not to share with their friends.

Great job Cassie. You were able to recapitulate the technique of viral marketing well. I enjoyed that you stated, “It works by picking the right media for your audience and portraying it in a way that would compel someone to share it with their friends and circulate it through the media.” This seems like is referring to the messenger, message, and environment idea that wikipedia discussed. I thought it was extremely interesting that there are different types of messengers such as, market mavens, social hubs, and salespeople. It is important for them to work together to accomplish an efficient message, undergo a successful process, and distribute their message in an effective environment. As I read about these positions, marketing all makes sense now. I can now point out who does what while in the campaign journey. Moving on, the idea of the story being unexpected and random is completely silly, but like you said, it is an option and most the time it is that silly campaign that becomes popular. Lastly, awesome job with adding the detail of the Old Spice commercial. Catch phrases are a must!!!!

Viral Marketing

Viral marketing is the technique of spreading an idea through word of mouth. I use the word idea and not advertisement because viral marketing and advertising is not the same thing. An advertisement focuses on a product while having the purpose of increasing production sales. Advertisements can be placed in newspapers, magazines, commercials, etc, with a goal of consumption. There is more momentum, power, and emotion behind producing a viral marketing campaign. It also has to have the capability to be distributed similar to an advertisement, however, like I said before, the word of mouth is how viral marketing can exist. It is commonly said that this form of marketing produces ideas that, “spread like viruses” (Baekdal, “7 Tricks to Viral Marketing”). After reading the assigned articles, I understand that viral marketing plays with emotions, produces debate, and makes us think. According to many of the articles, it could and should be humorous in order to arouse laughter and beams amongst their audiences. 

This is how viral marketing works. Someone or multiple people decide to campaign for something. They produce this campaign without spending millions of dollars on advertising. These messengers have to think critically about their message they are going to produce and within what environment they want it to be distributed. The viral marketing then spreads through verbal communication, until it is recognizable or gets the message across, NOT until a product is sold. I found it interesting that an important aspect within viral marketing is telling a story. This adds to the idea that the messengers are making the campaign relatable, persuasive, and engaging. To sum up what I have said, viral marketing works when the message, or media, is funny, controversial, impactful, and resourceful. The messengers and producers need to know the hottest things at the right times in order to evoke responses. Therefore, this marketing method they work when they utilize social media and other popular ideas.

WAREHOUSE READING 4/5/16

What an awesome night I had. I attended my first warehouse reading of the semester. I used to go over summer, but the atmosphere tonight was different. I was homie and incredible. The lights, candles, and warm bodies around me truly added to the experience. Tonight at the warehouse, the readers were emerging students from FSU that had won awards for their work. Some readers were graduate students and some were undergraduate students. During the poem section of the night, I was really astonished. Here I am thinking that poems need some sort of rhyme scheme and remain under 20 lines. The poems I heard tonight were out of this world. To be honest, some of them were so elaborate and scholarly that I couldn’t always follow along. Although this happened quite a few times, I remained engaged because the poets rhythm and voice inflection was harmonious. These poems were long, but they all had a purpose and they were filled with rhetorical appeals. The first reading was not read by the original author. The poem was entitled, “If I Have Not Taught.” It discussed the personal view of a woman and how she would feel if she never educated. She used detail such as, “wearing a skirt with spandex shorts, which is a precursor to a muffin top.” One of the most interesting poems that I heard tonight was entitled, “Barbie Ain’t Taught Me Nothing,” The author was named Syd and her story was short, but very grasping. The main character was a little girl who was speaking to her dad in such a sweet tone, but she then used curse words within her dialogue. When the reader spoke these words, at first I was like “whoa!” But then I looked around and realized that this was the right atmosphere for those forbidden words and these precious stories. The readings were awesome and I’m glad I went.

I do not agree that books are always better than the movie adaptations. In 11th grade, I had to read The Great Gatsby for my english class. Afterwards we watched the movie version with Leonardo DiCaprio. I can honestly say I liked the movie better. The book was enjoyable, but I thought it was somewhat simple and throughout the book I thought it was missing something. When I watched the movie, I realized that the design and the style was what the book was missing. The music and the effects added life to the story in my opinion. I understand that not everyone agrees with this, but I do believe that the movie was effective. It was created extremely well. On the other hand, the book My Sister’s Keeper, is one of my favorites and I believe the movie adaptation did not do it justice. The movie was good and it still made me sob, but its changes to the story line were not powerful enough for me. The ending of the book is how the author wanted the story concluded. Because the movie ends differently, the movie viewers won’t all necessarily know what the author’s vision was.

One of my favorite movies is High School Musical One. The story revolves around the main characters. These characters include, Troy, Gabriella, Sharpay, Ryan, Monique, and Chad. The setting is in New Mexico, specifically at East High High School, home of the Wildcats. It takes place during the second semester of these students junior year. The plot of the story is amazing. Troy and Gabriella meet in the beginning at a New Years Eve party and have, for a lack of better words, love at first sight. They go their separate ways. Coincidentally, Troy and Gabriella bump into one another at East High because Gabriella switched schools. They first become friends and decide to sign up for the spring musical! This pisses off Sharpay and Ryan, who are typically the drama stars. They don’t want their show to be taken over by a nerd (Gabriella) and a basketball player (Troy). They decide to do what they can and end up getting Gabriella’s friend Monique and Troy’s bff, Chad, to join in the plan. By the end of the story Gabriella and Troy get back together and crush the spring musical, the championship basketball game, the science fair and the idea of sticking to the status quo. I would say that the central conflict is when Gabriella unfairness Troy for what he says about her. This takes place during the time their friends are sabotaging them. Troy confided in Chad and his basketball team and this bit him in the butt. Gabriella found out and it broke her. 

The rhetorical situation is a narrative story that tells the lives of high school students, battling with their individual high school statuses. The purpose is to entertain, but to also send a message that we can be whoever we want no matter what people think. The audience is filled with young people obsessed with Disney Channel. The most prominent appeal is pathos. The mode is visual and the media is digital. The style is casual because the movie was made for a younger audience and the design was flashy. The movie contains music and it takes the form as an actual musical.

Blog Post 6, Narrative Genres

My issue can benefit from a narrative genre composition because it will help teach the audience a lesson. Since I am trying to persuade the audience to agree that being vegan is good for a person’s health portraying a story that backs up my argument will greatly help. I can share a narrative with the readers about a person who benefitted greatly by becoming vegan. This will entertain them while also having a moral to the story instructing them on the great outcomes of this lifestyle. The narrative will also help the readers relate to the person in this story going through this change. They will then think that if this person can do it and change their lifestyle drastically, they can also become a vegan. The narrative will include all three forms of rhetorical appeals. I want it to be credible, logical, and have emotions through out so the audience can relate to the person in the story. I am thinking about using the story in the documentary “Vegucated”. Since the three people become vegan and are all fairly young I will narrate in a casual, young, and informal style. I was also introduced to literacy narratives in the bbg book. I am considering writing a memoir/literacy narrative and considering eating like a vegan for a week and then discussing the experience and how I felt. I don’t know if that will be allowed but will see which one works the best. I really think a story will help capture my audience’s attention and explain my side of the argument helping the audience be persuaded to agree that veganism is a healthy lifestyle.

This was an awesome blog post. I especially liked how you informed us on one of your ideas. It made me think about how I can use a narrative composition for my project even more specifically. I believe a documentary would be a great idea. I also think you could possibly post it within the vegan community on a Facebook or Twitter page and then document those responses. 

I also think it is important to remember that a narrative can be persuasive no matter what. We don’t necessarily have to push so much within our stories. Chapter two discussed the idea of a narrative being persuasive. Telling a story is very relatable and could unintentionally sway an audience members opinion. In your case, the character of a vegan can simply persuade the audience to become vegans by highlighting his/her fitness, their clothing, and their alternatives, without really saying “Become a vegan!”

Narratives Genres Benefit My Cause

My issue is something that is very subject to individual’s personal feelings and experience. From the outside looking in at pageants, one will inevitably think one of two things – either “Gee, that looks so fun!” or “Why on earth would anyone subject themselves or their child to that?” Because the thoughts around the issue of child pageants are strong for many individuals, a personal narrative would greatly strengthen any argument made for the continuation of child pageants. A narrative of a woman who was involved in the pageants circuit since they were a child, who eventually went on to do something great in the eyes of society would strongly pull audience opinion, just like a narrative of an obituary of a girl who died of anorexia due to her time in pageants would turn the audience against pageantry. In my project, I could certainly look to social media for evidence both in support and rebuttal of my claims about child pageants. I can also look to books written by pageants queens, or public interviews with participants using them to build my argument. Photographs are also a strong way to sway my audience, considering how children’s appearances are so dramatically altered in these pageants. The use of before and after photos or even videos of the pageants would make a significant contribution to my argument.

Great post! Your issue in general is a strong and relative one. Therefore, any composition would be beneficial, but using a narrative genre can be beneficial and effective. Like you said, telling the stories of individuals within the pageant community can sway your audience. You did a very nice job with telling us how you specifically would use the narrative genres. I do believe a documentary would work the best because we would be able to notice the individuals transitions and her story will seem surreal. As an audience we might react with sympathy. The narrative would most definitely do its job by entertaining us, somewhat persuading us, and most importantly, it would be telling us a story!

Narrative Genres!

My research topic for paper number two was, “How is the rise of digital media, particularly media utilized at home, affecting the Broadway community and how does Broadway plan on keeping up with the industry?” I believe a narrative genre composition would help my issue for multiple reasons, the first being, musicals, TV shows, movies, and other similar media are already narrative genres themselves. Musicals tell stories of fictional or nonfictional characters. They contain a purpose and a plot, which further contains an exposition, rising actions, a climax, falling actions, and a resolution. Nowadays, they aren’t all as traditional, but they do take the recognition of a narrative piece of work, as do the other forms of media I discussed in my paper. Another reason my issue would benefit from a narrative composition would be because of how a story could also be persuasive. Telling the story about how Broadway became Broadway and how Broadway stars landed their first roles could be effective. I can also tell the story of how Movie stars landing their audition. Both stories can tell my audience to side with one medium over the other even if I am persuading them unintentionally. Another beneficial reason for using a narrative genre could be that it entertains the audience. I would be composing to people within the Broadway community, but if this issue in particular is not relevant to their lives, they might not care to hear about it. Therefore, a narrative genre can still make them curious about the issue I am going to broadcast.

TED TALK.. Go McGonigal!

The TED talk featuring Jane McGonigal, a professional video game designer, was very interesting. The purpose of her speech was to try and increase the lifespan of the audience by 7 ½ minutes. She did this by using several appeals and genre conventions. Her audience was the people in the TED talk, listening to her speech. The audience may diverse and grow when the TED talk is put online and broadcasted over this other media. McGonigal uses all three rhetorical appeals. First, she uses pathos to spark our emotions and make us sympathize for the discussion she was giving. To spark these emotions she explained the five most popular regrets people have while lying on their deathbed. This made me sad which drew me in to what she was saying. She also talked about her suicidal life story. This made me feel bad for her, but the part of her story when she got better because of her video game, persuaded me to want to play video games. Ethos was noticeable because she is a professional game designer. She also used sources to help her claim. She used logos when applying math equations and science. She specifically used science when discussing the articles and how video games can lead to a boost in happiness or post dramatic growth in general. The modes she utilized was audio and visual. She was giving a speech, therefore, as an audience, we listened to her, but the way she dressed and expressed her self was visually pleasing. She also used a slideshow for more effect. The genre conventions that were exploited were prominent from the beginning. Her style of speaking was very casual and allowed us to relate to her claim. She cracked jokes, which also made the speech feel not as formal. Her clothing style fit her character. I would think to be a professional game designer, you need to be creative, artistic, and inventive. Her outfit, hair, and makeup, conveyed those qualities. If she were wearing a suit, her personality would lack expression, which would lead to a less effective speech. The design of her speech was put together well. As she spoke, her transitions were smooth; the transition from stating deathbed facts to when she speaks about her effective personal story especially. She also designed a slideshow to help her purpose, which made it easier to put her facts and opinions into thought. She also stood on a higher platform. Our attention was always on her as she spoke. Plus, she added actually video game graphics to the PowerPoint in order to keep video games relevant throughout her speech. I believe the speech McGonigal gave on TED talk was successful. I don’t believe this composition should take any other forms of media. Her speech let us experience her story and made us think about what we can do with 7 ½ extra minutes added to our lives!

The rhetorical situation of this picture is a little Lego man watching the little Lego girl holding hands with someone else. The Lego people are particularly Star Wars characters and Legos wants us to buy this Lego set. The audience would be anyone who uses and plays with Legos or Star Wars fanatics. The purpose is to make us feel bad for Luke (I think that's him). The creator uses pathos to spark our emotions. The mode is visual and the media could be print or digital depending on where this picture was displayed. His design is eye-catching because he configure the Legos to look like real people and his style is causal. If this were a painting of these characters the style would feel more formal. If the media were any different the authors point wouldn't be as effective. I wouldn't necessarily change anything but maybe make a short video with the Legos moving and "acting."

Danone/Evian and Havas Worldwide

The purpose of this article is to persuade readers to buy Evian water.  Their directed audience is anyone that is looking for health benefits from drinking water. These benefits include youthfulness and purity that many people strive for.  These benefits connect to the rhetorical appeal of this article.  The pathos technique or appeal is fueled by the readers’ worry about detoxing their body to be pure.  With them feeling impure, they will feel the need to buy the water.  There is also ethos in their campaign with the use of celebrities and TV advertising.  The celebrities bring a surety that the water is safe to drink and is the best option for buyers.  The mode of the article is both written and visual.  The text is the main source of persuasion on the websites and articles of the campaign.  The commercials and pictures in the magazines provide the visuals. The medium is both digital and hard copy.  This is effective because it can reach many different buyers.  If this were changed into a movie then there could be a plot where someone is sick or is getting old and they drink the water to be healed.  Buyers would see this and be drawn to buy the water.

Good job! I did not do the same article as you did, but I enjoy reading about what you believe the purpose is and so on. Because the mode was visual I think it’s important to address it’s purpose, rhetorical appeals, genre conventions, etc. because the audience to a visual mode doesn’t have the crutch like readers of a persuasive paper do. What I mean by this, is that visual modes may be harder to analyze because less words are used. In other cases, they might be easier to people who understand what a picture is telling them. Thinking back to the Writing into the Day we did about the flyer with a shirtless guy and a phone number, I didn’t particularly understand its purpose as quick as other people might have. So great job with analyzing this. Another thing, I think a video would be awesome to produce, however, maybe a commercial would benefit more than a movie would. Audience members might not take away the purpose from a movie because at this age, we understand that movies are fake and the plot doesn’t necessarily happen (unless it is based on a true story).
