Campaign Reviews

There were many amazing campaigns presented in class over the past few days. Some of these campaigns really took off and turned into something that felt real, not like a mandatory project. I liked how passionate certain individuals were in presenting their topics, it made having to sit through class much more bearable. 

One of my favorite campaigns was Emilee’s LGBT campaign. I really liked this campaign because of how thought out every detail of it was. She took nothing and turned it into something amazing. She may not have been in my class, but we worked on the project together outside of class. She became passionate about her topic and I think that is why it was such an awesome and successful campaign. I saw her put so much effort into every tweet and so much effort into her infograph until it was just right. She was able to spread her message successfully, while also doing it in a lighthearted way. The puppy pictures she included on her twitter were my favorite.  

Emilee not only became very proficient in piktochart but she became a very valid and very passionate spokesperson for the LGBT community, which is something that she took great pride in to be a part of. Thumbs up for you Em!

Champagne Campaign

We all know what hell we went through trying to do this project and it’s really hard for me to pick one person knowing the individual struggles each of us faced. Therefore, I am not saying one campaigner was better than another, I am just casting my vote for the Champagne Campaign. 

That being said, I do have to get a grade for this so: I don’t remember all of the details of Luis’s campaign because it was last week(the struggle); however, it really stuck in my head and that’s why the Bees get my Champagne Campaign. I think it stayed with me because his aesthetics were so pleasing and cheerful; it was a nice, positive reprieve from the heavier campaigns that day. Because Burts Bees is a natural cosmetic community, I learned a lot about their company through my research in project II as well. It was really cool learning more about the B-pocalypse and the effort to #savethebees. Luis really put his personality into his genres and his excitement for the cause really shines through in his end product and presentation. I think this excitement is why his campaign stood out to me after a week of other awesome projects. You could say I thought his campaign was “the bees knees.”

I love the fact that you said “the bees knees,” just because i say that all the time and my friends think I'm crazy, Luis being one of them. Im friends with luis outside of English and seeing his genres come to life was fun! I think he did a really good job on his genres and getting the word out there.

Presentation Review

I overall enjoyed everyone’s presentations because I got to learn about communities and issues I did not know of before.  In my opinion, I think that Hudson’s presentation on being vegan was one of the most effective.  It was clearly organized with good transition into talking about each genre.  He throughly explained where he shared his information, had statistics and graphs on his e-portfolio, and showed how all of his genres worked together in a sense.  He had a clear voice and was loud enough for everyone to hear him.  Also, it seemed as though he got a good response from people within the community which definitely made his campaign seem more effective.

I agree Hudson’s presentation was very effective. He received a good amount of followers and he even said himself he got emerged in the vegan community. This was really cool because it showed he is passionate about his topic. It was not just a assignment for him but a issue he cared about. I also think his Instagram was super cool and trendy. It captured the attention of Instagram users which is shown through the amount of followers he got. Also, the Buzzfeed article was really cool. I would definitely click on that and assume someone that works in that company made it. He was loud and I could hear him from the back of the room which adds to his presentation. Everyone did a great job on their projects!

I liked Hudson’s a lot too! The statistics and graphs made it a lot easier to follow along with what kind of feedback he got. I thought it was funny that he said that his roommates were all vegan and that he’ll probably end up being vegan.

I agree with Hudson having the most effective presentation. He displayed all the content that was needed for this project. He got the most followers and really captured me with all his pictures. Even all his roommates are vegan which shows he really knew about this topic a lot. Overall, great job with this presentation.

I really liked Hudson’s presentation as well. I agree that it was interesting learning about a community I previously did not have a lot of knowledge of. I think that he got back great feedback from he’s Instagram followers, I also really enjoyed his video of him making a vegan dish, if i ever wanted to try a vegan meal I know where to look!

Presentation Review

If we’re choosing favorites, Haley’s campaign about tattoos in the workplace was definitely my favorite. This issue is one that I could face in the future due to my two tattoos (even though one is on my ribcage and the other is on my foot). I agreed with her standpoint on the fact that tattoos shouldn't effect whether or not people get the job, the qualifications should determine that. This campaign grabbed my attention the most.

If we’re choosing most effective, i think Hudson’s vegan campaign was stellar. He had a ton of followers and i really enjoyed his meal videos. I also thought how he incorporated snippets of an interview he conducted with his vegan roommate was very effective. I also enjoyed his BuzzFeed posts (as well as the Smart House ad on the side).

The message of this campaign from first glance is to basically “shine a light on slavery,” or to make people aware of it and inform them. The purpose is to inform people about slavery. The audience is any one on wanting to be informed about slavery and anyone walking by their stand on Landis those days. The mode is visual for both pieces, may be audio if you were to stop to read the poster and someone was to start talking and giving you facts. The medium is print. They advertised with chalk on the side walk and printed statements for their poster. Rhetorical appeals would be ethos. they establish this by saying they are a chapter of the larger organization IJM. They also use logos by stating all they things they do for IJM. The style incorporates earthy colors, nothing bright. they also use strictly black and white for the photos. I don't think its too effective because I'm not sure what their goal is exactly. I think that would be better understood if I were to stop and talk to them.

I had a tough time deciding which poster stood out to me the most. I decided on the knife poster over the coffee and cat posters. I love cooking and being able to see which knives work better for different types of knives that i don't have makes me want to go out and buy them! I think the purpose was to inform the observer of what kind of knives their are and that there are so many. The audience for this artwork would probably be those interested in cooking, those who do cook and those learning to cook. The rhetorical appeals would probably be logos because they are telling you what knives are what but they don't establish any ethos. The design really makes the poster pop by using a light blue and white font and outline. Its very bright making it stand out. I don't think this particular post would be helpful to my project three but i do think others can take away that the poster is light and bright and that makes people want to look at it.

I believe A Walk to Remember was better as a movie than it was as a book. Though you might say I am biased because I watched the movie before I read the book, I’ve watch a ton of movies before reading the books and still think the book is almost always better. The book for me was hard to get into. It started out with Landon reflecting on old memories. To me it had a bad beginning and if someone thinks the book is confusing or not good for the first few pages, they aren't going to be as excited to finish the book as they were to start reading it. The movie adaptation began showing how Landon wasn't necessarily a bad teen but struggled to do the right thing because of the crowd he ran with. The movie does this by showing him and his friends basically hazing someone who wants to be their friend. When the hazing turns bad, everyone races home but Landon stays to help the kid and ends up getting arrested. This to me is much more intriguing start to a novel or a movie than beginning in the middle of old memories. I also felt more connected to the characters in the movie which is usually the opposite for me.

My favorite story is from the book The Best of Me (100% better than the movie). The story follows the lives of two teenagers, Amanda and Dawson, from two totally different lifestyles. Amanda’s family comes from money and Dawson’s family is from the wrong side of the tracks. Though they are very different they fall in love in a small town in North Carolina. On prom night, a fight breaks out within Dawson’s family. He tries to wrestle the gun away from his family member but a shot fires and kills his best friend, sending Dawson to jail. This is when Dawson refuses to see Amanda and she is forced to move on with her life. 20 years down the road, Dawson is out of jail and Amanda is married with kids, when they find out a mutual friend, Tuck, has died and requested them to go through his things in his will. They rekindle their romance throughout the week they spend together sorting through Tuck’s things. when things are finally heating up between the two, a fight is sparked within Dawson’s family by his return, and nothing ends well. 

I’d say the audience for his narrative would be women, or men, in love with romance. The purpose of the novel was maybe to inspire people not to let love slip away like Amanda and Dawson did. Rhetorical appeals is mainly pathos. The Story hits right in the feels revolving around love and really makes you cry when you finally understand why the book is titled, “The Best of Me.” The mode is written and the media is a book. The style for the book is mainly for older teens or adults.

Narratives Genres Benefit My Cause

My issue is something that is very subject to individual’s personal feelings and experience. From the outside looking in at pageants, one will inevitably think one of two things – either “Gee, that looks so fun!” or “Why on earth would anyone subject themselves or their child to that?” Because the thoughts around the issue of child pageants are strong for many individuals, a personal narrative would greatly strengthen any argument made for the continuation of child pageants. A narrative of a woman who was involved in the pageants circuit since they were a child, who eventually went on to do something great in the eyes of society would strongly pull audience opinion, just like a narrative of an obituary of a girl who died of anorexia due to her time in pageants would turn the audience against pageantry. In my project, I could certainly look to social media for evidence both in support and rebuttal of my claims about child pageants. I can also look to books written by pageants queens, or public interviews with participants using them to build my argument. Photographs are also a strong way to sway my audience, considering how children’s appearances are so dramatically altered in these pageants. The use of before and after photos or even videos of the pageants would make a significant contribution to my argument.

I totally agree that one of those two things will definitely pop into someones head when they think about pageants. Using before and after pictures of people in pageants can be a strong argument and I also think they would grab peoples attention if you were to use some for project three!

My issue is the debate of whether to choose organic cottage industry made cosmetics or their synthetic corporate manufactured cousins. People use narrative genres to share personal stories or experiences. A narrative genre can benefit this issue because it can be a true story of a person’s personal choice and success with one of the products. Narratives dump the readers into a vat teeming with all three convictions: pathos, ethos and logos. It is no wonder that every product ever created has a website and has hundreds of reviews sharing with others what the customer thought of the product. Personal accounts work. Millennials and the generations before them are my audience because everyone has to clean themselves and everyone has an opinion to what they put on their skin. Millennials like proof, they are a “seeing is believing” generation and a narrative genre is the closest thing to actually trying it out that there is. Older generations connect with the person telling the story and form a bond creating trust of what the person is saying. Trust is one of the most important aspects of the cosmetic community and a narrative genre is the optimal genre to forge this trust, as well as grow the already existing trust between producers and customers.

I have to say, your posts are always my favorite to read because of the words you choose to use. But, to focus on the topic, I think the topic you chose is a big one among makeup fanatics. I agree that the narrative genre is as close to “seeing is believing” as they will get before they actually purchase a product. I think you did a very good job of explaining why narratives work so well for your issue.

Sexual Orientation Conversion Therapy

The issue within my community is one that circles around personal feelings and stories from those who have endured it. From writing my paper, I found that most people are either completely for conversion therapy or completely against it. I, personally, was one who was strongly against conversion therapy. I thought it was a barbaric treatment that used electroshock therapy or temporary paralysis based on the knowledge I received from television shows (embarrassing, I know). Throughout my research I was able to find stories that supported my thoughts on the matter. What I didn't expect was to find stories that showed that conversion therapy was helpful and not barbaric. The narratives I found helped change my outlook on the issue. They didn't necessarily make me for it, but they made me see that if its done correctly and the person is seeking the treatment for themselves and not because someone made them, it can work. Narratives in my community help people see more than what they see in media or on t.v.. They also help strengthen the argument of the side they are on.

The audience of this piece is any Star Wars fan or any lego lover! The purpose is to grab the attention of anyone who watches Star Wars and to get them to see Legos love Star Wars and hopefully get them to buy some Legos. the main rhetorical appeal would be pathos. It bringing adults back to the movies of they child hood. Its also evoking a feeling of sadness for Hans because the love of his life is walking away from him. But Im also confused as to why Leia is with Chewy because I’ve only seen the last episode of the series. The other Rhetorical appeal is Ethos. Legos establishes ethos by using their brand name logo on the upper left hand corner. The media is visual and the mode is a poster or ad. The media crafts this message by having a solid red background making the main focus Legos and Star Wars. If I were to remediate it I would probably choose a different movie just because I don’t relate to the picture and don't understand it.

Persuasive Genres: Video Games vs Violence

The purpose of this article was to show that although in several cases video games could have been linked to tragedies such as Columbine that video games do not tend to make the players more prone to and desensitized to violence.  The audience is everyone ranging from teenager to adult because it brings up issues and shootings and politics. The rhetorical appeal that was used the most was logos. Dickinson brought to light facts of several court cases that claimed that video games led he guilty to commit the crimes that took place. An example was the mention of the Columbine shooting. The media and mode is visual and text based. The overall style is a news article without media.With media added into the design and style this could have been a much better article. This article could have been better adapted into a podcast which could allow opportunity for the lawyers of the cases and the victims of the tragedies to say how they feel about video games in regards to violence. It would also allow for nonviolent students and individuals to make note of why playing video games does not make them prone to violence.

I agree that in more often than not videos don’t cause shootings, but there are times where they can. The audience does sound about right because the article wants to hit those who play video games, and also most likely the parents of the children that play these games and want to have children with good mental help.

The article that you chose seems very interesting. I like how it is two-sided on the issue and states that violent video games could and could not affect a person’s actions. I agree that this article could be adapted into a podcast and would be something i would definitely listen to.

Persuasive genre

The article I chose to read was “When Teachers Cut Class.” I think the targeted audience for this particular article was Concerned parents and also school board advisors. The purpose of this article was to inform their readers of the problem that surrounds education: teachers constantly calling in sick and missing classes while trying to persuade the reader to take action or take notice. The main rhetorical appeal the author uses is logos because of the statistics they found in other studies across the U.S. to show the reader what they are saying is real. The author incorporates ethos by using stats from ivy league schools such as Duke and Harvard. The mode of the article is text because it is written and you can find it in the newspaper or on the internet. Because you can find it on the internet the media is digital, as most things are now. The design is plain with an intriguing headline title. If this article were to be adapted into another form i think it would be a news segment because thats where most parents get information.

Writing Into the Day - Project #2 Reflection Take a moment & around 200 words to reflect on your project. What is something you like about it? How many drafts did it require, really? This was by far my favorite paper to write. I enjoyed learning about my topic. Though I went into this paper feeling strongly about one side of the paper, the more I heard the other sides opinion (mainly from Christopher Doyle), the more I accepted the other side. I see where both sides come from now and I have truly learned more than I ever thought I would on this subject. I wrote my paper is three drafts. But will have to write another for our ePortfolio. Writing this I am remembering that I did not cite the interview I conducted with Christopher Doyle. If I had another week to rite I would definitely add the citation and I probably wouldn’t have procrastinated as much. I think I would have added more to my essay about my interview. I didn’t do much over the break because I didn’t go home, I was visiting my grandmother and unfortunately she hasn’t stepped into the 21st century yet and hasn’t installed Wi-Fi into her home. My approach to researched has changed in that now I know it is so much more helpful to actually want to learn about what you are researching and not to just pick a topic for the sake of having a topic. Picking a topic for a 3000 word research paper is the most important step, in my opinion, of writing the paper.

A six hour drive to Suwannee, GA is the beginning of my Spring Break. I Love this part, watching the trees pass by the windows and grow more dense the farther into Georgia we get. I’ll be in the back seat with my mom and dad in the front. We’re meeting my oldest sister and her new boyfriend there and staying with my grandma and aunt. Grams will probably cry when she sees us because we haven't been able to visit since Christmas of 2014. It will be different than last time because her dog, Ellie, won't be there barking up a storm and chasing our little cousin around the house. That might be a good thing though because my sisters new Montana boyfriend is afraid of dogs. Most of the vacation will be indoors because there are no beaches near by and we’ll probably be cooking more than half the time. My family is big on eating. I’ll also be going to my aunts salon, hopefully, to cut my hair. Though I won’t be with any of my friends, I’ll be enjoying the sweet and savory smells o many home cooked meals.

Blog Post 5// Conference Round 2

I really enjoyed writing this paper. Its given me a different perspective on the topic of gay conversion therapy. I don’t totally agree on it but it definitely has shown me that the people who are for it are passionate and don’t want to change gays because of their own beliefs. They just want to help. The conference was very helpful. Ms. Bradley help motivate me to do even more research to kind of broaden my knowledge on my community. Doing this extra research will help me continue writing and give me more credibility with the information I give in my essay. I also received helpful information on how to structure my paper better and make the issue one of the first two sentences rather than the last sentence of the first paragraph. I liked he analogy of using the paper as a way to show a home. Write your paper as if you are walking through a house and introducing the buyer, or reader, to the different aspects of your community and issue. My conference was this morning and I’ve already made major revisions.
