😠 ANGRY FACE — how easy or difficult is it for you to express your emotions? if you find it difficult, what do you think is holding you back?

-----  There's  the  ever-obvious  answer  that  emotions  simply  get  in  the  way.  Emotions  are  dangerous;  exposing  your  feelings  to  others  gives  them  the  ability  to  take  advantage  of  you,  to  weaponize  your  own  insecurities  and  incompetence  against  you.  It's  easier  for  Perry  to  brush  his  feelings  under  the  rug  and  then  grind  the  rug  into  the  floor  beneath  his  heel.

-----   But  maybe  it's  a  combination  of  alcohol  and  the  fact  that  he's  been  faced  with  his  own  mortality  as  of  late,  that  he  allows  himself  to  ponder  the  question.  (  He  has  nothing  left  to  lose  in  being  honest  with  himself  now,  does  he?  )

----- ----- ❝  I  think  what  little  emotional  depth  I  have  went  into  two  things.  The  first  being  the  patients  I  treated  who  respond  best  to  a  gentle  approach.  ❞  Those  were  often  few  and  far  between  given  that  Dr.  Cox  was  more  often  handed  the  cases  of  assholes  that  no  one  else  wanted  to  tolerate.  Not  that  he  really  minded,  it  gave  him  an  excuse  to  unleash  his  temper  without  negative  consequences.  ❝  I  don't  fault  people  who  seek  help  for  the  right  reasons.  I  admire  them  for  having the courage to take those first steps.  ❞

----- He  swirls  the  scotch  glass  around  in  his  hand  idly,  stares  into  it  like  it  holds  some  kind  of  hidden  answers  that  his  brain  doesn't.  ❝  And  the  other  is  not  being  my  father  to  my  own  kids.  -- And  I'm  sure  Jack  and  Jenny  can  tell  all  kinds  of  stories  about  how  I'm  not  winning  any  father  of  the  year  awards.  Hell,  maybe  if  I'm  lucky  I'll  get  a  little  ribbon  for  participation.  At  least  one  thing  you  won't  hear  my  kids  saying  is,  ❛  Daddy  got  drunk  and  beat  my  ass  for  breathing  too  loud.  ❜  ❞ 

-----  And  with  that  he  proceeds  to  tip  the  rest  the  glass  back,  that's  as  good  of  a  mood  killer  as  any.

the muns's two cents: Perry learned at an early age that his emotional needs would not be met by his caretakers (in fact crying was met with ridicule and physical abuse) ergo he learned to suppress his feelings and convinced himself he didn't have wants and needs. this resulted in him holding onto a lot of anger and resentment of peers who had better relationships with their parents, and he was quite a bit of a bully for it. unfortunately he maintains this attitude well into adulthood as he struggles to reconcile the idea that he deserved better than the upbringing than he had and that he should have been allowed to express himself more openly. he rarely expresses his thoughts and feelings outright out of fear of rejection for admitting weakness, though if he's talking to someone he trusts he may hint at what's bothering him, or make a self-deprecating comment. (can't be surprised by the rejection if he insults himself first!)

Ah. Okay, we're doing that today, too.

He really shouldn't be surprised. He knows he shouldn't be. Doctor Cox made it pretty clear right from the getgo just what he thinks of J.D. as a human being (too soft ,too emotional, too femininechildhishincompetent--)

He's heard it all, before. Hears it still, rattling around his brain every time he sets foot inside the hospital. Sometimes it seems like his mentor (who'll take every opportunity to renounce that, by the way) hides behind his sharp treatment a valuable lesson or advice, breadcrumbs for J.D. to follow, if he can sidestep the open wounds. What lesson is there in yanking a clipboard out of my hands?

"Right, I'm a little girl, got it," J.D. sighs. He still doesn't move. "If you're going to knock down my self-esteem, you could at least tell me why you think I'm suddenly unfit to treat a patient."

To his knowledge, he hasn't jeopardized anyone's health in ages, hasn't touched a drop of alcohol while on-call after Cox chewed him out the last time and he hasn't done anything deliberate to piss his mentor off in--

Wait.

J.D.'s brow furrows. He glances towards the room he's so rudely been ushered out of.

"Is this about metabolic diseases?" It's just a guess, but a guess is all he's got to go on. He can't be blamed for Cox's decision to share with him a shortcoming during the same week an old peer (and rival...?) showed up. He also can't be blamed for Doctor Casey's...blunt bedside manner, for lack of a better word (disturbing, disturbing, he called my hair wax deeply disturbing--)

Okay, so maybe J.D.'s a little on edge, as well.

Never let it be said that for all the fantastical nonsense that comes out of his mouth that one John Dorian is not a perceptive little bastard when he needs to be. Surely Perry has learned by now that JD thinks faster with his feelings than he does trying to recite something he learned from a textbook. Trying to discourage him with passive-aggressive jeers about his nonexistent masculinity only makes him even more determined to prove his worth.

----- ( So then did he want JD to call him out on it? To recognize that he's just as human as every other doctor, nurse, even patient in this damned hospital? He does have a vague recollection of his former therapist saying something to the effect of, ❛ You enjoy being called on your shit, Perry. You like to be called on your shit so you can sweep it under the rug without acknowledging where it actually came from. Why else do you think you're in my office? It's certainly not because you're trying to better yourself. ❜ Charming man Dr. Gross was, but he had made several key observations about Perry, loathe as Perry was to admit to any of them. )
