On first watch, the PJO Season 2 finale struck me for the way it blatantly portrays Zeus wanting to use Thalia as his weapon and her unequivocal rejection, to which he responds by disarming her.

On second watch, I am fascinated by the Furies - what they told Thalia that would turn her further away from a father she never wanted, and why Hades (presumably) sent them.

What motivation could Hades have for revealing the Great Prophecy to Thalia and driving a deeper wedge between her and Zeus? Did he know Zeus was on his way with that proposition and that her rejection would mean she was a playing piece that would be removed from the board?

Did Hades genuinely want her to know the truth, or did he want her out of the way? To get rid of her so that the Great Prophecy would be about one of his own children?

Or did he seek to turn Thalia against Zeus in the hope that she would go on to bring down Olympus, a power structure and family that rarely respected him?

I so appreciate the many bright lights in our fandom weighing in on the continued biphobia from a small but very loud contingent. However, I wanted to address something else - the idea that Mary Read "should have been portrayed as a nonbinary character".

I have seen this statement from several people - not just one of the OPs of the most recent biphobic blow up (and I won't be addressing that saying Mary should have been nonbinary somehow invalidates Ed as bisexual, since bisexual means attraction to all sexes, not just two) - and, as a nonbinary person, I really wanted to address it.

Very strong disclaimer that: nonbinary looks a lot of different ways. My experience of nonbinary may not resonate with other nonbinary people. Maybe Mary Read WAS nonbinary for whatever definition of that would have been understood by an 18th century pirate. But why HAVE some people gotten it into their heads that OFMD is being disrespectful by not portraying her that way?

Read has an extensively sourced and researched wikipedia page which demonstrates how little we know about the historical figure of Mary Read (and it's a really interesting meta-article about how her supposed sexuality was constructed by later authors). It also notes that the likely inaccurate but first popular depiction of her has her dressing as a boy when she was young in order to receive money from a relative. Then she and Anne Bonny are both said to have dressed as men in order to sail aboard pirate ships. And that's… it. So why, exactly, should Read be portrayed as nonbinary? Even leaving aside the disputed accuracy of these sources, is it because she's said to have dressed as a boy from a young age, but then is also said to have saved herself from hanging by claiming she was pregnant? That's all I can think. And that seems like a gross misreading of what it is to be nonbinary - without even getting into a discussion of what gender identities and sexualities were like in the early 18th century Caribbean.

Being nonbinary begins with an internal understanding of gender outside the highly contextual, socially constructed binary of "man" and "woman". Being nonbinary doesn't mean you dress as a different gender sometimes, or move between gender presentations contextually because it might benefit you. In fact, I'd say that it is very, very difficult to decide a historical figure is nonbinary without having some knowledge of their interiority and self-perception - sadly, things we just don't have for this historical figure.

Yes, this, and: the choice they did make about Mary is portraying her as *butch*. One of the things I love about butch as an identity, the reason my gender is butch first and anything else second, is that butch is a category that straddles all these other ways we now think about gender. Butch can be cis or trans, butch can be male, female or nonbinary, and that's all equally valid.

Butch is also a gender with a long history and a lot of contested argument. Butches are celebrated in many places, but they've also been criticised as bad representation, as giving lesbians a bad name, as abandoning the fight for women's rights by trying to emulate men. For all these reasons and more, it's really hard to find depictions of true butch characters in popular media.

OFMD's depiction of Mary Read is important to me for what it is, not what it isn't. Mary uses she pronouns and I use he and they, but to me we're both butches together.

kinda weird how ppl still think nonbinary folks never have dysphoria or only have mild dysphoria when mine was life threatening before transition. The surgeries I've had were life saving and massively improved my life and I'm waiting on a date for my bottom surgery

like nonbinary folk come with the full spectrum of no dysphoria to life threatening levels of it just like binary people. It's just ours may sometimes seem a little more 'random' than the average binary trans person.

also, i feel like people SEVERELY underestimate / downplay how life-threatening social dysphoria can be when you are nonbinary. not that it cannot be so for any trans person, but i remember having some pretty severe depression and suicidality around the fact that my gender literally does not socially exist, and it can be so goddamn hard to treat social dysphoria when you can't follow the binary path of "be seen as a Normal Woman / Normal Man." i've seen people talk about "making a gender trinary" but let's be real, that isn't a serious thing that has ever actually happened, because no third-gender / gender neutral people are actually being normalized and accepted. its just that the first step to erasing nonbinary existence entirely is homogenizing the community into something easy to segregate from the Normal Men And Women, put in a box to the side and never think about.

& then you can also consider how nonbinary people are less likely to have gotten surgeries than binary people (from here)

Access to gender-affirming care (GAC) varied across gender identity when comparing trans men to AFAB nonbinary individuals. For example, both groups highly desired top surgery; however, trans men were significantly more likely to have already undergone the procedure (32%) compared to AFAB nonbinary individuals (10%). Both groups also showed interest in hysterectomies, though access again differed, as 10% of trans men had undergone a hysterectomy, while only 2% of AFAB nonbinary individuals had. Overall, this indicates that while transgender men and AFAB nonbinary individuals often seek similar forms of care, nonbinary individuals experience a larger gap between desiring a procedure and receiving it, possibly due to systemic barriers or variations in how medical providers approach nonbinary transition-related care. When comparing across gender, some similarities exist between transgender women and AMAB nonbinary individuals in their desires for certain procedures. For instance, both groups wanted laser hair removal at high prevalences (54% of trans women and 58% of AMAB nonbinary individuals). However, transgender women were far more likely to have undergone the procedure (40%) compared to AMAB nonbinary individuals (15%), suggesting a greater gap between desire and access.

& not only that but it is harder to get surgeries that don't seek to create peritypical cis-typical genitalia, like penis-preserving vaginoplasty or nulloplasty. this is why it is so insidious that other trans people, who are FULLY capable of treating dysphoria as genuinely life-threatening when it comes to binary dysphoria, act like nonbinary people aren't seriously affected by dysphoria and especially when they take this to the point of talking about how we don't have the Trve Transsexual Material Positionality tied to the need for hormones and surgery and that's why genderqueer advocacy is to blame for transphobic legal attacks on the community.

like. okay so we all agree that dysphoria can kill people and cause immense suffering and this should be treated as an emergency. Simply cannot stop thinking about the fact that HJ and LaVonte are Sire and Childe and yet seem to have no hierarchy between them at all. HJ unquestionably treats LaVonte as his equal and LaVonte feels perfectly comfortable yelling at and physically assaulting HJ, both of which are kind of unthinkable under the social rules of the Camarilla. It’s LaVonte’s name first in Worthy and Wingstreet Industries. They are Sire and Childe but more importantly they are partners.
