Mel Brooks on taking studio notes:
Was trying to make a joke about TV writing to my friend the other day and had to pause and go "...does the phrase 'surf dracula' mean anything to you?"
One of the most important critical texts of this century imo
Sapkowski tends to skip over actual battles and wars and only deal with the inhuman fallout of peasants starving and sorcerers going blind and both armies raping and looting and the racial tensions it causes between the humans and nonhumans (which is to say its mostly humans lynching integrated members of the other races as a response to the cruelties commited by elf guerillas) and war profiteers and schemers and ruined roads and gallows etc BUT. the battle of brenna, the one he actually brothered to write? possibly if not definitely the gretest and most gripping battle scene ever. the multiple prespectives of various division members across the it peppered with character we've mostly met before, the scouts Not doing their job properly out of simply fear that results in Nilfgaard getting fucked (and their general who learns this by seeing the Nordlings get the unexpected reinforcment immediately orders all of them to be hanged unaware that they just got killed in the very same charge). said generals on the hills trying to command. the 17 year old courier trying to get to one of the wings to forward an order realising he bit more than he could chew. Jarre signing up despite being exluded from the draft losing a hand. the dwarves division being put in the worst positions because they'd rather send other races there over the humans. the medic tent pov, which is The main pov if i had to name one, that is once marveling at a particularly interesting injury (a witcher dying by 2 teeth. wonder if this will have any relevance later) or almost getting killed my nilfgaardians or losing hope. the courier making it with the message after all only to fall of the saddle and have his head immediately crushed under the hooves. not a single main character is mentioned for the whole chapter btw
The fact that not a single main character is mentioned is the thing that stuck out to me (especially after I read a Google review that complained about how Sapkowski made the book boring by doing so). Quite often we see the Big Battles in Hero Moments, or what I call Avengers Style: the whole of New York City is decimated, with people's lives taken or irreversibly changed, but LOOK HOW AWESOME OUR HEROES ARE IN THEIR HERO MOMENT! Who cares about the rest?
The fact that Sapkowski chose to focus on the impacts of war on those who are not the heroes (those who find themselves drawn in regardless of their beliefs, those who have no power or choice but to be effected, those who are the victims, those who are trying to help in these times of hardship), I think was a big part of why I like him as an author so much. Sure, the heroes in a "gritty" fantasy novel are fun, and Sapkowski crafts very compelling characters, but his refusal to hand wave about the impacts on *everyone else* demonstrates an understanding of how war affects real lives.
Now that everyone is discussing Nolan's Odyssey movie, I feel like it's a good time to let non-Italians know that the production dumped plastic props into the Italian sea. Weirdly enough I could not find any article in English about it but it's a fucking problem nonetheless.
I might translate this article later today. This one was the most complete one, even in Italian news it's not talked about that much.
Non è la prima volta che la produzione solleva un vespaio in Sicilia. A Lipari una squadra di sub sarebbe però già impegnata a bonificare i
They dumped plastic skeletons in environmentally protected areas, against the literal contracts they had to sign to get the permits to film in environmentally protected areas. Like they not only did a bad ecological thing that freaked out some divers, they literally broke environmental protection laws and their contract with the Italian government
Not the crab rave I was waiting for but one I’ll take.
i don’t mean to be political, but what if everyone had basic human rights
my most lukewarm take is that I don't think there should be any exemptions for vaccines, etc., beyond documented legit adverse medical shit that makes it physically impossible. like they should be free and required and nobody should be allowed to just choose to leave their child and any immunocompromised person they interact with vulnerable to potentially deadly but entirely preventable diseases and other medical conditions.
like scientists have spent sooooo many decades doing science to make sure that your kid (and everyone else protected by herd immunity in many vaccine cases) does not get very sick and/or die of terrible diseases or hemorrhages that, for a very, very long time, killed so many fucking people. and yet parents who get all their health info from supplement peddlers and conspiracy theorists on instagram reels think they know more than doctors and scientists with expert knowledge are allowed to decide they just want to expose their kids and any immunocompromised people around them to this shit instead of getting a shot??? I do not think that should be a thing you are allowed to do.
Everyone shut up and look at this carving of a whale from the 1200-600 CE Chumash culture
ohhhhhh my godddddd
Hehehe
I miss them <3
Oh boy, a complex character who's a woman! I love messy characters who hurt everyone around them and continue the cycles that hurt them!! Can't wait to share this joy with fellow fans– why's everyone calling her a bitch
Made a sketchy something to relax
