Do you mind me asking how you color? You have such a beautiful painterly style and I can never seem to wrap my head around it! If you don't want to answer I totally respect that! Your art is totally fantastic

Honestly, the painterly style took me a while to learn, I started off using black and white (and only black and white) so I had to learn blending or it would look horrible. When I’d figured that out I move onto using various shades of black and white, and eventually moved onto colour.

I pretty much say whenever someone asks me is that using a tiny canvas helps with practising the flow of an image if you’re too detail orientated. Then move onto a much larger canvas when you’re more relaxed in how you draw.

But from what I know of the painterly style, and what I’ve learnt from other artists who use this style is that it’s generally very messy. The brush shape actually accounts for a lot of the work, I used to use a square brush, because it got me a more blockish type of look, but switching to a circular one has definitely helped.

Speed and a larger brush also help because it removes any sort of strictness to your art, it lets things blend into each other. Even if you’re just blending the nose to the cheek, or the nose to the eye socket. Using one layer also removes any harsh lines you get from erasing or cutting and moving parts of the image around, making it look more whole.

I currently use @m-oshun​ ‘s brushes (which can be found here) because they are literally one of my favourite artists and their art is very inspirational tbh. ((Hopefully they won’t mind me using them???)

Anyway here’s a more physical way of explaining it if you don’t want to read a block o’ text; (I apologise for my handwriting too omg////)
