The Ottawa Tourism Board have a new ambassador. He’s a very famous hockey player. Is it Shane Hollander, you ask? No. It’s Ilya fucking Rozanov. (Or, a transcript of the 2025 Visit Ottawa tourism campaign.)

Frankly I don't even know where this came from but the idea came to mind and wouldn't let me live in peace. So here we go. Complete little tourism advertising based crack fic ;)

Character Name: Dmitri Maksimovich Vorobyov

Date of Birth: 7 March 2007

Dmitri Vorobyov was born in Tikhvin, Russia in 2007. He is the fourth of the five children of Maksim Vorobyov and Ekaterina Vorobyova. Both of his parents come from large families, and he has a total of thirteen biological aunts and uncles and via their spouses, a further thirteen aunts and uncles by marriage. His four grandparents are all still alive, and he has thirty-six first cousins.

Dmitri's extended family are all very close and growing up, he and his siblings and cousins spent a lot of time together at each other's houses, around town, or congregating at their grandparents' houses. Dmitri himself had always been a bit of a wild child; making bumps and jumps to ride his bike over at speed, never sitting still, climbing trees at family social events when pictures were supposed to be taken, and always wanting to practice 'martial arts' (despite not being trained in them whatsoever).

Dmitri 'skated' and played around on frozen lakes as a child but didn't really begin playing ice hockey until he was eleven, when his youngest brother began to play. Having made the World Juniors Team as a defenceman in 2026, Dmitri elected to enter the MLH draft that summer. It was not a topic of discussion within his family, but he grew up with the taught and implicit understanding that it was illegal and that it was illegal because it was wrong. Though he came to know, later, as a teenager, that this was not a view taken by other countries.

Dmitri would have been fourteen when the Russian media began to report on and vilify Ilya Rozanov for the revelation of his relationship with Shane Hollander. Dmitri was among plenty of young Russian hockey players who, to that point, would have looked up to Ilya Rozanov as an icon.

Being drafted to Ottawa in 2026 was in the first instance a disappointment for Dmitri. Firstly, because he understood he would have to toe a very careful line socially. And also, because many were skeptical that Ottawa could go on to win another Cup; their peak looked behind them. But what does he really think? That would depend on what year you asked him. Early, he feels frustrated at the risk by association that his draft selection places him in. Soon after, he feels like he cannot appreciate why being gay is such a big deal for his home country but appreciates that things are simply different. Later, he privately acknowledges how harmful the laws are and that they endanger innocent people just like many of the people he has come to care for as friends.

Finally, a bit of insight into his inception as a character. The character of Vorobyov was originally intended to appear once Chapter 18 and perhaps once more in Chapter 19. Instead, he popped up twice in Chapter 18 and became quite a fixture in Chapter 19 plus a brief appearance in Chapter 20.

His last name was selected first based on common names within the Leningrad region of Russia, where I had decided the character would be from. Then he began to be written in as a talented and fight-happy rookie defenceman.

Around this point I realised he'd be showing up a few times in the narrative and thus should have a first name. The first name came easily.

Once, I attended a wedding where a young child named Dmitri was causing havoc for his poor mother. He was a terror, disappearing to go punch a big tree during the ceremony, playing a game to see how many chairs he could jump over at once after the ceremony was done, annoying his younger brother incessantly. The whole time his mother was just yelling out, "Dmitri! Dmitri! Come back here Dmitri!" He could not be tamed.

And so I thought to myself - yes, this character will be named Dmitri.
