secret: Beat his foster father up so bad the man was sent to the hospital and was paralyzed.
Growing up knowing that your own family never loved you is a lot for a kid. His first case worker told him that his mother loved him very much, but couldn’t take care of him so she did the most selfish thing a mother could do and gave him up in hopes that someone else would take better care of him. AJ doesn’t remember that, but he does remember his first foster parents telling him that the truth was that his mother didn’t want him. That she dropped him off in front of a fire station and the note she left behind only said A.J. He was left with nothing. Not even an entire name.
Not all of his foster homes were bad, but people wanted young kids most of the time. Most of the time it was because the couples wanted to adopt and avoid the usual long process that came with an adoption agency. He was never in those homes for very long. When they were bad, AJ would act out and make his presence there so bad that his social workers had no choice but to place him with different people. He moved from house to house in North Carolina until he landed in the Smith’s house.
He arrived when he was fourteen years old and the family made it clear from the beginning that he was a paycheck to them. They mostly ignored him at first so it wasn’t so bad but then the abuse started to happen. It was progressive, first mental, then emotional, followed by physical. It was horrible and he was so scared most days that he wasn’t sure if he was getting any sleep because his entire life was a nightmare. One day when he was almost seventeen, bigger, stronger, and quicker, AJ decided to end the abuse. He was used to staying after school for sports practice so it wasn’t out of the ordinary for him to get home late. He knew the man’s schedule and he met him halfway home. AJ was dressed in unidentifiable clothing when he jumped his foster father. He beat him so bad that the man was left paralyzed. No one knew it was AJ and they never would.
Soon after a miracle happened. AJ was almost aged out of the system when he was placed with the Clawson’s. They were a couple in their late forties who had never been able to have children of their own and has started taking older foster kids in out of the goodness of their hearts. They showed AJ what families were supposed to be like and for the first time ever, he had people who he loved and that loved him back.
The Clawson’s adopted AJ at the age of eighteen and they helped him get into school in Raleigh, North Carolina. They dedicated their time, passion, and love to helping him accomplish his goals. AJ had always loved baseball and became a D1 athlete at university. He was later signed to the city team in Raleigh, transferred to the team in Charlotte, and landed in Williamsburg four years ago. He moved to Asteria because the town had a charm that the bigger city didn’t. He loved it here and his love for the town is part of the reason why he has declined offers to transfer out of state to sign with a MLB team.
