8 Things I’ve Learned About LA from My Geology Class

Earthquakes: • There actually IS a huge earthquake coming. It will be much bigger than Northridge. • The Valley and the LA basin can get as much as FIVE TIMES MORE SHAKING during an earthquake than the Hollywood Hills or the Santa Monica Mountains. (Ground surfaces are composed differently, which leads to earthquake wave amplification in certain areas)

Coastlines: • IMPORTED BEACH SAND: We are losing the sand on our beaches due to offshore currents, so in order to prevent all the coastal communities from being overtaken by waves, engineers have to regularly bring sand in from other locations (I’m assuming the desert). • Don't buy houses on the beach. • Don't buy houses on stilts.

Surface and Ground Water: • The LA river changed direction. It used to empty out in Marina del Rey, but in the 1800s extreme rains and flooding forged a new route that lead the river to empty out in San Pedro. • Dry cleaning isn’t actually dry. They use a chemical called perchloroethylene (PCE) that, when not disposed of properly, can contaminate the soil and local ground water systems. • Los Angeles actually uses groundwater. Though most of our water come from aqueducts, 11% of our water supply is from groundwater and surface run off.
