Anyway I think Gale's romance is much healthier for Astarion psychologically than his own romance. Like Gale starts off immediately demanding his honesty then is honest in return and so right away the exchange is based on integrity and trust, not lies and manipulation, and then they have to travel together for a long time and sort of awkwardly flirt but it can't go anywhere yet because Gale has a bomb in his chest, which is confusing. So before they can even consider anything close to sex they have to just spend a lot of time together as friends, valuing one another as comrades and enduring near death experiences or even one another dying for real and what that feels like. And Astarion can be both intelligent and brave, also silly and brash, and he can help little kids and innocents because it impresses Gale and also the others and in this grow into his role as a hero. Meanwhile Gale appreciates him and it has nothing to do with his sexual prowess or sexual gratification at all. It can't. He just like, admires him. For being him. So Astarion can't even fall back on all that to serve his own self-loathing or to fuel his trust issues like he can with Durge or Tav. He has no recourse. He has to just be heroic and maybe he learns to inhabit the role a little bit, with pride. It's really good for him. I love this for Astarion
