It's Okay To Cry, I'm Here (Sonadow fanfic)
He thinks of her again, her bright eyes that flicker under the sparkling stars.
Her head tilted up towards the sky as if she yearns to fly free.
Her golden locks laying on the grass like a resting sun.
She’s there, was. She was always there with him, for him.
They were inseparable, intertwined like youthful souls travelling without limits.
They spin, twirl, with a rhythmic yet shifting ebb and flow.
But never alone, never separated, always together
Even when tangled up, they always smile at each other’s presence.
In fact, they would laugh at their tangled messes together.
Or at least, she would, while he would stare then smile back.
He always smiled at her, with her.
Her laughs soothe him like lavender, no wonder he loved the flower’s scent.
Home, that’s what it smells like.
Home, that’s what she felt like.
To him, a sanctuary. A safe haven. A comfort.
And he never even thought of leaving that comfort, not ever.
He never even fathomed the idea that it would have to end.
They were running, panting. Holding each other for dear life.
He was fast enough, strong enough, capable enough.
But not enough to save her.
She only asked him of one thing.
She reached out, so does he.
He keeps reaching out. Her hand so close yet out of reach.
He still tries. He keeps going.
You can do it, just grab her hand and-
Shadow blinks as the hand changes from the past to the present.
It used to belong to a young dear friend, but now resembles a blue rival.
Shadow’s head tilts slightly upward, as if recalibrating.
The blue hedgehog waves his hand more towards the dark one’s face.
His green eyes remain wide with eyebrows raised.
The dark one’s eyes remain dazed, before shaking it off.
“You sure? You know, we don’t have to do this if you’re not up for it. Although, that would have to mean that I win.”
The blue one smirks like he’s asking to get punched, but then his eyes widen again when he isn’t given the verbal equivalent.
“Uh, you sure you’re okay?”
“Come on, Shads. You can tell me. I can tell something’s wrong.”
Shadow takes a moment before responding, almost as if contemplating if he should even start.
“She and I… we were inseparable. It was like we could take on the world, like nothing else mattered as long as I had her…
Look, I know you told me to focus on our love instead of dwelling on what ifs and could haves but…
He just felt a tear, why?
And more are coming, more flow.
He doesn’t understand, which seems to make the crying worse.
A sudden hand on his shoulder, he looks to his right.
“I’m guessing you haven’t been hugged in a whole, have ya?”
Shadow shakes his head before he starts to feel a gentle embrace.
Without thinking, he hugs back, resting his head on his rival’s shoulder.
And, without thinking, he starts to sob and breathe heavily as more tears fall.
Almost like a dam has broken and the flood will never stop.
But perhaps, that’s okay.
At least, with Sonic it feels okay.
