I badly want to start saying “this is my Swarovski Shrek” to refer to any outrageously expensive yet ridiculous object I start coveting. If anyone says “what the fuck” and asks what I mean, well. It’s their lucky day to learn about Swarovski Shrek
I just saw a video title on YouTube that said something like “Why is glass transparent?” And that’s an interesting question and I’m sure it’s great that the video exists but my first thought was like “Because glass is terrible, obviously.” Because it’s unwieldy and let’s out warmth and needs to be heated to hundreds of degrees to be shaped and turns into hundreds of tiny daggers if you drop it. Why the hell would we bother with that if it didn’t have some magical quality like being totally transparent despite being solid? Glass is transparent because if it weren’t, we’d use something else.
If you’re still curious we did not start working glass for its transparency. It was most likely started as a sanitary concern. Glass is easy to clean with soap and water, once it’s cleaned out you can use it again for anything and no germs or flavor from the previous meal or drink will remain.
Other materials at the time, namely clay, would absorb flavors and germs meaning that if you ate beef off a clay plate your next meal with that plate could have beef flavor and microbes common on cow meat on it. That would leak out seemingly at random no less. Heck imagine a sick person coughing into their soup bowl and then months later their germs hiding in the clay would pop out to infect whole new people.
Also the earliest human use of glass we know of is for its sharpness. Pre-historic people would use volcanic glass as sharp knives for food preparation. Also beads. Pretty much any new substance humans get their hands on for most of our history we immediately try to make into beads.
The fact that it could become see through was a side benefit.
Bell = Hour (1 Hour in game time = 2m 55s in real life)
Sun = Day (24 Bells)
Sennight = Week (8 Suns)
Fortnight = 2 Weeks (16 Suns)
Moon = Month (32 Suns)
Year = Year (12 Moons)
Epoch = 12 Years or one full Zodiac.
Astral Era = Time when mankind builds up his civilizations. (Seem to average 1000-1500 years.)
Umbral Era = Time when mankind tears down his civilizations. (Length of time varies greatly.)

I highly recommend looking at the #5 post by Sounsyy!
(Also a thank you to Cam'nahl for finding this post for me <33)
So far as I can tell, the days of the week listed above (Firesday, Earthsday, etc) never actually appear in the game. (I can’t speak to bonus content like the short stories off the top of my head, but should I ever run across any examples, I’ll take note of it.) This seems to be entirely Word of God, specifically a 2014 interview with localization director Michael Christopher Koji Fox, who states that the days of the week are the same as in Final Fantasy XI. (Cited here on the archived roleplayers’ forum.)
Gamerescape also has this handy reference page on Eorzean time.
Multiple sources heavily cite The Five Ages - An Eorzean Chronology, which appeared in 1.0 by way of “Dusty Tomes” found in various guilds. These texts didn’t return in the remake (except, amusingly, as a housing item), so we’re reliant on the fandom’s archivists to preserve them. When you see someone refer to “Dusty Tomes,” as in the roleplayers’ forum posts linked above, that’s what they’re talking about.
As a side note: while the units of distance and weight measurement above fully replace our real-world units, that is not the case for the units of time. “Hour” and “bell” seemed to be used about equally in MSQ dialogue (thank you @eriyu once again for your service). Though “moon” is more common, “month” appears more than a few times. “Day” is more common than “sun.” “Sennight” is barely there (though it pops up a few more times in side content), and as it’s technically a misnomer that tends to needle a lot of detail-minded fans, I wouldn’t feel obligation to use it over “week,” which appears far more often in canon anyway. “Fortnight” is similarly a misnomer, but a bit more commonly used since there isn’t a alternative word for “two weeks.” There are no alternate words for minutes or seconds; they’re called the same as we do.
