Yesterday I had the delight of catching up with the multitalented Nana Visitor, known to millions of Deep Space Nine fans as Major Kira Nerys. Nana was incredibly candid and a sheer joy to talk to. She will be attending the Destination: Star Trek London convention this week (October 19-21) along with a host of other guests. TrekCore will
Can’t believe I hadn’t read this one yet, lots of great stuff in here:
TrekCore: You and René had such an awesome chemistry on screen, does that transcend into a good friendship offscreen?
Nana Visitor: Oh absolutely! We have plans to have dinner Friday night in London. I can’t wait to see him, he’s one of my favorite people.
TrekCore: Wonderful! That leads me to my next question. The cast of The Next Generation are quite unique in Hollywood in still all being incredibly close to each other after 25 years. Do you remain close to the DS9 cast?
Nana Visitor: Well we don’t all live in L.A. I think The Next Generation cast as a whole are more social beings, we were kind of… I can certainly say that I’m a loner. I’ll say this – when we get together, you can’t … one of my favorite memories is when we would have an Ops scene, and we would all get to see each other once, and the director would be so annoyed because he couldn’t start the scene, we just kept talking, kept catching up, and joking and laughing and playing around. So I think there’s a deep fondness that we have. But we catch up when we see each other at conventions, or we happen to be in the same city, but no – it isn’t the same as The Next Generation, that really is unique. Although I talk to Siddig constantly obviously, our son is 16 now which is hard to believe – looks just like Siddig. So we have a lot to do with each other. I’ll be seeing him in London too.
TrekCore: So Siddig is in London at the moment?
Nana Visitor: Yes! He’ll be in London at a certain point for dinner probably, to see me, but he’s usually not in London.
TrekCore: So there’s no mini-DS9 reunion on the cards then?
Nana Visitor: No, I don’t think so. We’ll sneak off and catch up together, he and I.
...TrekCore: It’s still incredibly politically, religiously and socially relevant. Were you consciously aware of that when you were filming it?
Nana Visitor: Yes! There wasn’t a time when I wasn’t – certainly I can speak for my self – when I wasn’t aware how important it was and the archetypes I was playing out that existed in the world. And that we were being watched so carefully made it so important that even if you’ve waited ten hours to do your scene in your little trailer, and you come out at 2 in the morning to finally work, it doesn’t matter that it’s 2 in the morning, it doesn’t matter that you’re tired or hungry or your makeup is driving you crazy – because what is about to be filmed will be watched and will be important and will have something to say. So you gotta bring it!
When I watch Ds9, I’m sometimes struck by how physical Dax’s character is. Terry Farrell walks with wide strides, she leans back on her arms, she sits down on chairs backwards. She’s using these little things that are coded male, but not in an obvious or stereotypical way.
Star Trek has a tendency to be stereotypical with male and female behavior. But Terry Farrell is using that, by making just these small changes in body language. So we don’t get outspoken (traditional and stereotypical) masculinity, like you might expect from some tv shows.
It’s only when I looked at the show for maybe the third time that I realized how much of Dax is created by how Terry moves. She is constantly laying the ground work for viewing Jadzia Dax as someone that is comfortable being man, or a woman, or neither, or both. Which is an important part of her character.
Jadzia and Kira were one of my earliest earliest ships, before I even knew what shipping was, before I was even fully non-homophobic (Jadzia was a big part of me moving past that, in fact, with Rejoined). So great seeing them together again in the documentary.

Fan Question (Part 1 of 2): “Is there anyone you’ve met at a ‘meet and greet’ that you have ever given your number to because you wanted to become their friend or something like that?” (Part 2)

I love you with so much of my heart there is none left to protest. Come, bid me do anything for thee.

For the past two weeks, I’ve been positively elated. The super awesome and talented Amy Mebberson was doing commissions for SDCC. As I was not going, my friend was and she was cool with him picking it up for me. It’s currently with the craft store for fancy framing.
I could not be more ecstatic about it. It’s just stunning. Benedick’s scruffy smirk, Beatrice’s coy little smile. How awesome they look, Benedick in the sexy uniform and Beatrice gorgeous in that blue dress. And the chair! The barrier yet the door as they declare their love. It’s playful and sweet and romantic and perfect Beatrice/Benedick charm.
Amy’s work is always fun and brilliant. Go follow her. Follow her immediately and spend hours loving her work. And she’s very kind and generous and she’s got a returning customer.
Thank you SO much to all our amazing fans & to London Film & ComicCon for an incredible weekend! Also, nothing beats a chance to hang out with my great friend #robertcarlyle 🥰 Love you all & cant wait to come back! (Soon I hope!) xoxoxo

Deep Space Nine: 4x09
I arrive at the James Bond episode of DS9
agents: secret
tuxedos: on
fantasies: out
I AM FORCIBLY PULLED INTO WRITING A FULL RECAP
To begin, a story.
During Operation Star Trek Eventually, @theglintoftherail had included among her DS9 recs an episode called ‘Our Man Bashir’, with a note that it had earned the show “a strongly worded letter from the Bond IP.”
Now, I’m hoping that my pre-Trekkie brain had managed to connect “Bashir” with “Bond,” and really hoping that once I started DS9, it then connected both of those things to this skinny disaster named Julian I’d met. Because otherwise, Me Of the Recent Past was pulling some NEXT LEVEL NONSENSE with this comment while watching the early S2 episode ‘The Siege’:
“pls tell me they somehow manage to turn Julian Bashir into that character type who fancies himself the dashing James Bond sort, is not, but really is a hero in the ways that actually count.”
Deep Space Nine, apparently: “hahahahahaa, *can do*”
And so two seasons later, here I am staring down the barrel of very possibly getting to watch this happen FOR SUPER LITERAL REALS. Did Past Me truly manage to game-set-match this entire episode?? I guess I’ll find out, in…
Season 4, Episode 9: ‘Our Man Bashir’
As advertised, the episode opens with DS9’s most embarrassing playing around in a holosuite, doing his best James Bond puns in his best James Bond voice. It is precisely as sleazy-hilarious as actually watching Sean Connery do it, and I have already cringed right into cheesy 1960s heaven.
Bashir, Julian Bashir knocks out a baddie with a precisely aimed champagne cork to the head.
“A lot of kick for a ’45 Dom,” he quips to the holobabe, and I hork-laugh so hard I fear I’m going to injure myself before this episode is through.
Equally delighted: Elim Garak, DS9’s most ACTUAL INTELLIGENCE AGENT, applauding at exaggerated length. You fucker. I love you.
That feeling is going around.
“(…huh)” - literally this COMPUTER PROGRAM

Sometimes a family is a terrorist, a sentient pile of goo, a grumpy engineer, a creepy bartender, a genetically engineered doctor and a worm.
One of my favourite scenes in all of Star Trek
don’t think about how Kira’s entire family died during the Occupation, don’t think about how she’s been an orphan for most of her life, don’t think about how unused to having a family she is, don’t think about it, do not think about it,
How old is everyone?
Years of birth of major TNG and DS9 characters, as found on Memory Alpha and listed here in order for your reference. Notably there are no dates for Odo (birth or date he was found as an infant) or Garak. Quark’s year of birth is also not listed, but I made a guess based on Rom’s.
2018 - Dax Symbiont
2305 - Jean-Luc Picard
2324 - Beverly Crusher
2328 - Miles O’Brien
Early 2330s - Quark
2332 - Benjamin Sisko
2335 - William Riker
2335 - Geordi La Forge
Mid-2330s - Rom
2336 - Deana Troi
2337 - Tasha Yar
2338 - Data (activation date)
2340 - Worf
2340 - Ro Laren
2341 - Julian Bashir
2341 - Jadzia
2343 - Kira Nerys
2348 - Wesley Crusher
2353 - Nog
2353 - Tora Ziyal
2354 - Ezri Tigan
2355 - Jake Sisko
2366 - Alexander Rozhenko
2368 - Molly O’Brien
2373 - Kirayoshi O’Brien
2375 or 2376 - unborn child of Benjamin Sisko and Kasidy Yates
Character ages at the beginning of TNG (2364-2370):
Jean-Luc Picard - 59
Beverly Crusher - 40
Miles O’Brien - 36
William Riker - 29
Geordi La Forge - 29
Deanna Troi - 28
Tasha Yar - 27 (27 at her death)
Data - 26
Worf - 24
Wesley Crusher - 16
Character ages at the beginning of DS9 (2369-2375):
Dax Symbiont - 351
Miles O’Brien - 41
Quark - about 40
Benjamin Sisko - 37
Rom - about 35
Worf - 29 (32 when he joins the crew of DS9)
Julian Bashir - 28
Jadzia - 28 (death at 33)
Kira Nerys - 26
Nog - 16
Tora Ziyal - 16 (19 when liberated from the Breen prison camp, 21 at death)
Ezri Tigan - 15 (21 when joined with the Dax symbiont and joins the crew of DS9)
Jake Sisko - 14
Alexander Rozhenko - 3
Molly O’Brien - 1
Character ages at parenthood:
Beverly Crusher had Wesley Crusher at 24
Miles O’Brien was 40 and 45 when his kids were born
Benjamin Sisko was 23 when Jake Sisko was born and 43 or 44 when his child with Kasidy is born
Rom was 23 when Nog was born
Worf was 26 when Alexander was born
When it comes to Garak, I estimate he is born around 2310, making him around 60 at the beginning of DS9. The reason for this is that he must be around the same age as Dukat, and Dukat was not only an adult, but the prefect of Bajor by 2346 (when Kira was three years old and Meru was taken from her family). Let us say that he was around 40 at the time, meaning he was born 2306. Garak’s exact year of birth can’t be pinned down (let’s face it, he probably lies about it most of the time), but I tend to say it’s 2309, for no other reason that it makes it easy to calculate his age in DS9.
As for Julian, isn’t he 27 at the beginning of DS9? When Sisko asks Dax if Bashir isn’t a bit young for her, she says “He’s twenty-seven, I’m twenty-eight.”
Your Garak age calculations make sense to me! Cardassians seem to either be pretty long-lived or not to show signs of age until they’re quite elderly.
As for Julian’s age, you’re probably right! I was just going on the years of birth listed on Memory Alpha, so depending on what month we’re in at the beginning of DS9 the ages could be a year off. But I totally forgot about that exchange. I’ll edit my original post.
I think Cardassians live longer than humans of the 21st century at least. (Memory Beta claims that the average life span is 107 for men and 120 for women, but I have no idea what that is based on, and I tend to take beta-canon with a pinch of salt.) Garak seems to be in better shape than a human in their 60s. However, for all his talk of age leading to respect, I think he might dye his hair to cover up grey, so it might be hard to tell his actual age.
Re: Julian’s age - you’re right about that too. He just hasn’t had his birthday. This of course means he tries to get everyone who has known him for like a month to come to Quark’s to celebrate with him.
Miles/Keiko/kira fluff for @dsnoiyne ! Part of the @startreksecretsanta . I’m so sorry for being so late!
I love this scene SO much, but I need a follow up fic like air - one where Kira’s poly fam husbands (shh I don’t care that this is too early in canon for that yet) swoop in and defend her from Dax’s annoyance (once they stop laughing <3) and reassure her she did the right thing in defending herself so she’s not put off historical holodeck romance for ever...
