A little post from the shadows; I couldn't manage to keep this hiatus going in earnest after my bud jmr over at asthecryflows shared this gem with the world. The image I've selected for this post--with the text, "PATIENCE, MASTER AT WORK"--is not in reference to Jimmy White, England's pro snooker/pool underdog for which the game is named, but rather the soundtrack's composer, Manfred Linzner. It is rare to hear as tasteful use of the Euro-centric "arp" style of chord creation (a technique that often just sounds like an annoying telephone ring) as Linzner employs here. Furthermore, while the lead melody clearly mimics a saxophone or other strong woodwind, and there is a killer faux-cowbell in the square wave percussion, the track benefits greatly from distinctly Game Boy sounds that couldn't really be replicated on any other instrument (namely the grimey bassline and the uniquely percussive melodic response to the "saxophone"s call). I'd have to say that Linzner himself is an underdog if he has produced works with this much sass, grit, and finesse without being as praised as some of his other European counterparts.
