I feel like we don't talk enough about the fact that Lance was top of his class as a cargo pilot. like everyone is so quick to demean Lance's intelligence because he's surrounded by the dictionary definition of geniuses in their own fields, but his line "fighter pilot, thanks to you washing out" to Keith means he was TOP RANK NUMBER ONE as a cargo pilot.
Lance is consistently infantilized and bullied for being a jack of all trades. his focus is spread, and even so he excels at what he sets his mind to. He, with little to no real gun or hand-to-hand combat training, becomes the team's designated sharpshooter. he also unlocks an altean broadsword , the only paladin to unlock multiple classes of weapons.
But he is the brunt of so many jokes because he's an empathetic, selfless, charismatic guy and a good friend BEFORE he's a genius. And honestly, i do believe whole heartedly that he is a genius, his focus is just so spread that he isn't a prodigy like his team members.
I love you Lance McClain.
Not only that but ppl forget Keith knocked Lance out of formation in the class set ups originally or he'd probably be there anyways.
There's only two real geniuses on the team: Hunk and Pidge. And I'll never understand why Lance is shit on so much for his "lack of intelligence" when Keith is in the same boat! we never got their overall academic ratings we only got the pilot class ones.
He's just so incredibly versatile and overlooked for certain impacts he has it's crazy. He's the reason Keith was the leader he became bc without Lance getting through to, and being his support? He'd have gotten them all killed in his impulsive rage/grief.
Lance knows when to step forward and when to step back. He's perceptive, has good awareness even if he doesn't always seem it and I desperately wish ppl saw it more.
He's the ONLY paladin other than Zarkon himself to unlock multiple Bayard forms. Zarkon being 6, Lance 3...lance unlocked HALF of what someone had 10k years to accomplish that's insane! He was welcomed in by two lions with ease bc they wanted him there so badly.
Lance McClain was meant to be a Paladin of Voltron.
