Carol Kane in Les Jeux de la Comtesse Dolingen de Gratz (The Games of Countess Dolingen, 1981), directed by Catherine Binet
How it has felt watching tvl after waiting for 2 years, and excitedly recommending the show to everyone I know:
I can't stop thinking about that one Atsushi answer from the guidebook profiles
The death of this show will be caused by the thousand and one quips, that the amc writers' room have convinced themselves are quirky and funny. Notice how all of their jokes this season are made at the expense of lived realities that are far different from those the writers themselves may have faced? So you will have a pronoun joke here and a little racism there, with a dash of misogyny sprinkled in between. I cannot get over their little jokey "justice4antoniette", not only because the history of s1- the man of the house cheating on his black spouse with a racist white lady, who was then entrusted with the task of killing the black girl child this marriage produced-but also it feels like such an insensitive jab at the phrase in itself. Something that's so often used as a call to action for victims of violence, and sure we joke around with the phrase too and in fact mayhaps at times diluted it too- but this? THIS?? with the context we have of a TV show that once centered two black leads much to the chagrin of many, so now when there's someone else to lead the show, the characters both black and brown are being made into caricatures and flattened to death in an attempt to soothe the ruffled feathers... Yeah, that's just nasty. Also when you have "Louisiana fried chicken"/"big bad wolf"/"cancerous jackal" all wrt to a black gay man, and then a piece of costume which goes:" hip hop sucks" then the writing is already on the wall, no?
iwtv s3 is crazy cause if they ended at s2 i was prepared to be like yknow there are failures here but overall, it seems like at least one person making creative decisions was thinking about the way racism perfuses anne rices work, and the show's not a totally unsuccessful attempt to explore those dynamics... but instead they had to keep going like anne before them & from the second i saw the very first trailer for s3 it was abundantly clear in fact no one working on the show has any interesting thoughts about anything wjatsoever & any conceptual coherence in the first two seasons is purely coincidence & does not reflect the views of amc or roland jones. some fascinating ip there in that it evidently contains its own killswitch
sure, let's have a black woman be basically a caricature, call her black father a nappy-headed slave, claim she never cared for him even though the past two seasons make it very clear that's not true, say she hates him more than her rapist and the people who murdered her, claim she intentionally and maliciously lied about being threatened with rape, say she prefers her white father (who horrifically abused her for 30 years btw) over him, and then have said fathers not show a single intense emotion over it afterwards. you know, since we can have characters just do ANYTHING now.
the seance scene... the more i turn it around in my head the more insulting and disgusting it is. not only it isn't given the weight it needs by making louis and lestat get over it so quickly and bonding over it (!!!!!) but it also destroys the tragedy of louis and claudia's dynamic. saying that claudia preferred lestat to louis and only chose louis to run away with her because he was easier to manipulate completely undermines the love claudia had for him. they had a complex relationship! claudia hated him and loved him so deeply all throughout her life. she loved him so much! she came back to rue royale because she knew he couldn't get out of that abusive relationship by himself. because she wanted to save him. she nurtered and took care of him for months after the drop. she tolerated lestat for him! even after he chose armand over her in paris, she still visited him with madeleine. she screamed his name in the trial after they dragged him away.
louis and claudia's relationship is tragic and doomed. it's not black and white! she hated him for what he did and how he failed her and she loved him deeply! that's her father/brother she couldn't save, who would never choose her first, who would always put someone else before her. that's why it hurts! it's crazy to even think she hates louis and lestat the same amount
retconning this to portray lestat in a better light makes no sense, because it doesn't even make him more likeable. instead of justifying his abuse or revealing that the poc characters were actually lying/manipulating each other they should've made him acknowledge his actions and look at what he did to those he loved in the eye. this is disgusting, cowardly and bad writing
I will take this as a win
I’ve made this post like six times but it still fucks me up the China’s mountains just look like that. Like I spent decades thinking it was stylistic but no, they just have different mountains over there.
For reference, here’s what my local mountains look like:
Here’s the general art style Chinese mountains are drawn in:
And here’s how some of them actually look:
What the FUCK
I’m specifically reblogging this here because I know there is a geological reason for this and I know at least one of you has to know it.
thank you
So Carmy’s just gonna sit there and compare being with Claire to being on fire, aka pain and inevitable destruction AND THEN he’s gonna compare Syd’s very presence to life, survival, and rebuilding AND you expect me to be NORMAL about it??!!
Sydcarmy isn’t a ship I actively think about but when I see them they make me insane. It was never a ship I expected to be canon because the show didn’t seem centered around romance originally and I was okay with that until they started pushing Claire too much. I wish they ditched the romance with Claire and just continued to develop Syd and Carmy’s connection (not even in a romantic way!). They are each other’s inspiration and muses, they’re soulmates, they love each other so much! I think they had the potential to have a really strong connection based on the first two seasons and the writers actively worked to pull them apart.

i feel like people are overlooking the moment at the beginning of obsession where nikki straight up asks "do you like me?" and once bear lies and says no she replies "ok, good." for starters, it was a chilling moment to me because this is such a classic experience of having a close guy friend, only to realize that he wants more from you. girls aren't dumb! nikki isn't dumb! of course she knows that bear is into her, she has eyes! she can see his stuttering and sheepishness and she's just dreading the moment she has to turn him down, to tell him that he's like a brother to her. just before she had told him that she doesn't feel real love in her life, and i don't think it would be a leap to attribute a small part of that feeling to her fear that her friendship with bear isn't as simple as she wants it to be.
it's also a chilling question from nikki because once she walks away bear knows that she doesn't feel the same way about him, and he makes the wish anyway. he is incapable or unwilling to take a hint and see that she doesn't feel the same way. and that question is the last thing she says to him before he ruins her life forever. it's unfair.
It’s shows how selfish & pathetic some men are. They never can take a hint & they are so clueless as to why a woman would not like them. Ugh I hate that type of man who pretends to be your friend but the whole time they are thinking about fucking you, or wanting you to be hurt by another man who they can swoop in, or the worst one them all is using all your insecurities/flaws against you as they manipulate & gaslight you into thinking they would be the only man who would tolerate you!
Bear is a pathetic loser.
