Austin and I got some canoes and went for a three-day, downriver journey through the Gandalf-goat ridden, Jurassic Park rainforest canyon that is the Whanganui. River time. Precipitation. Goats. We got weird out there- nobody on the river. Powhiri at a Marae (a welcoming ceremony at sacred place of the Maori) Back on da Bike.
Raglan Tube Bash Team Met up with an Austin Charvet and a Ross Klein for a bit of van life and sea time.
The woodcarving atop Mr. Klein’s face was filled with good juju to bring positive energy to Austin’s new van.
Riding on the beach may have been one of the most fun rides so far, blasting along on slightly wet volcanic grains.
The three of us also met up with another Jackson lady, Hannah, who brought us canyoneering down a series of waterfalls where we encountered glow worms in a glow cave.

Either way, I had a pretty challenging day yesterday getting to Taupo. Against the wind and uphill. Also, Kiwis call shopping carts ‘trundles’. Adorable

Goodness, I am now laying down in a jungle forest above a geyser. Well, how id I get here?
I was welcomed into the home of Zoe & Ray Marr in Papakura, a town just south of Auckland I was able to sleep, eat, hang out with their three cats, and, not to mention, spend time with these two lovely Warm Showers hosts (warm showers is kinda like couchsurfing for touring cyclists). They set me up so well for my adventure, thank you!

After a quick transferoo in Honolulu, I arrived in Auckland. Still hard to believe, but yes, crossing the Pacific Ocean, all of it, was completed in less than a day. The Airplane is ridiculous. There I am, going the fastest and highest I will ever go, ever, and I am either asleep, reading, watching LCDs or eating. My cardboard ski box did make it on my transfer in Hawaii. My bike did, and I started my tour last night at 2:00am, rode through empty, rainy streets and slept near some cows in Totara Park overlooking the city. haHA! Pasture Rainforest World.
Washington Pass in May. I got out for an afternoon tour testing out some weight distribution.
Today, I will be flying across the Pacific Ocean from Seattle to Auckland. For the next five weeks, I will be riding my bicycle, self-supported, from the North Island down to the South Island of New Zealand and exploring the volcanoes and peaks on skis along the way.
Aotearoa is the Māori word for New Zealand which roughly translates to ‘The Land of The Long White Cloud’. I intend to use my camera to both see through this cloud and learn more about with myself in the process. I have been eager to become intimate with this dreamscape of a place and I believe that pedaling and skiing around in this windy, hilly magic, will allow me to meet it fairly.
