When considering human sacrifices, the concept often seems more suited for a movie plot than a grim reality. Unfortunately, in 1989, Mark Kilroy, a 21-year-old student from the University of Texas, learned firsthand how tragically real such practices could be. Kilroy was on spring break with university friends in Matamoros, Mexico, when he mysteriously vanished during an outing to local bars.

Cross-border authorities initiated an extensive search for Kilroy, but their efforts yielded no results, causing the case to go cold. It was only reopened when Serafin Hernandez, a Mexican national, evaded a police checkpoint, prompting a pursuit that led to a remote ranch named Rancho Santa Elena. Investigation revealed that this ranch served as the headquarters for a drug-smuggling cult led by Adolfo de Jesus Constanzo. This cult engaged in bloodthirsty rituals, seeking supernatural protection through the sacrifice of a human victim, whose heart and brain were then cooked and consumed by the members.

An excavation of the ranch on April 11, 1989, brought to light the mutilated body of Mark Kilroy along with 14 other victims. While Constanzo and some cult members managed to escape the ranch, they ultimately took their own lives as authorities closed in on them. The shocking discovery highlighted the gruesome reality of human sacrifices perpetrated by this drug-smuggling cult in Matamoros.

1st known tuberculosis cases in Neanderthals revealed in prehistoric bone anaylsis

Neanderthals living in Central Europe around 35,000 years ago suffered from tuberculosis (TB), a new DNA analysis of their bones reveals. This is the first time this disease has been identified in Neanderthals, raising questions about whether tuberculosis contributed to their extinction.

In two research studies published in the journal Tuberculosis in December 2023, one international team of researchers reanalyzed the skeletal remains of two Neanderthals discovered in a cave in Hungary in 1932 and another tested them for Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium that causes TB.

Subalyuk Cave, located in the Bükk Mountains of northern Hungary, was used for shelter by animals and humans numerous times over the centuries and is considered an extremely important Middle to Late Paleolithic site. Read more.

Jade mask depicting Maya storm god unearthed in royal tomb in Guatemala

Archaeologists have discovered a 1,700-year-old royal tomb in Guatemala that's overflowing with funeral offerings, including an intricately designed jade mask depicting a Maya deity.

The tomb, which is located at an archaeological site known as Chochkitam near the borders of what are now Mexico and Belize, was the burial site for a previously unknown Maya king, according to a statement from Tulane University.

Along with the mosaic mask designed to resemble the Maya storm god, researchers found 16 mollusk shells and hieroglyphs carved into human femurs (thigh bones), including one drawing depicting a man holding a jade mask similar to the artifact tucked inside the tomb. Researchers think the hieroglyphs identify the king's father and grandfather and serve as a link to the ruler of the Maya states of Tikal and Teotihuacan. Read more.
