A revived man strolls idly through Las Nevadas, gut swirling with anticipation as he weaves into late night casino crowds.
âWilbur?â Quackity appears from around the corner. âHey man, good to see you!â His gold tooth glints falsely with a welcoming grin. âWhat are you doing here?â
âOh, you know, I was justâŚâ Wilbur trailed off with sarcastic sheepishness, looking at the man. âIn the area.â
âUh huh, right. In the area.â Quackity shakes his head, head ducking with disbelief. âYouâre a funny guy, Wilbur.â
âGlad you noticed.â The revived man teases.
Quackity only hums in response. He stands with his hands in his pockets, stance wide (ready for a fight).
Wilbur appraises the shorter man before him, taking in the worn beanie stuffed onto his head sticking out like a sore thumb compared to the pristine state of his suspenders. It was the same blue hat after all these years. His posture was more slouched than it had been when Wilbur saw him last, straining under the weight of a long presidency.
He decides to continue to play their game of rivals, until he could introduce a new (and better) one.
âI see you kept the sunglasses I gave you.â He gestures at the pair of brilliant red and gold-rimmed frames on Quackityâs face.
âI like to hold onto nice things.â
âThatâs a pretty pair if I do say so myself.â Wilbur agrees. âI never told you this, but I actually bought them with you in mind.â
âOh really?â Quackityâs tone is monotone, gaze cold.
âReally,â The revived man continues. âTheyâre much too fancy for a man like me. Much better suited for the President of Las Nevadas.â Wilbur gestures at the skyscrapers surrounding them, the needle towering above.
âWell I agree with you, Wilbur.â A smile stretches across the casino masterâs face like cutting glass. âMaybe I should continue to hold onto them since Iâm that well suited.â
Typically at this point, Wilbur would be expected to scowl or to âbreak characterâ away from their charade of friendliness. Anger would feed anger, passion with passion, and they would leave this conversation both viscerally unsatisfied- as their twin black holes would continue to suck away at any chance of happiness between them and others in their lives.
Wilbur wants to try something new.
âI want you to, theyâre a gift. And besides.â Wilbur pauses with uncharacteristic nervousness. âI thought that you should have something to remember me by when I-â
âWhen you left.â Quackity finishes for him with flint in his voice.
A tumbleweed blows in the background.
âYou fucking suck, Wilbur.â The words came out with spitting, and this isnât how Wilbur wanted this to go.
â... Yeah.â He deserves Quackityâs anger.
Quackity storms to him and fists his shirt. His singular eye flashes with rage. âYou left Tommy!â
Wilbur stared at him sadly.
âYou-â He yanks him down. âHave so much to answer for. You think a fucking pair of sunglasses is good enough for leaving without saying anything?â He yanks him harshly. âAnd donât even get me started on what you did to Tommy. He came straight here after you ditched him for Utah.âÂ
âI couldnât be around him anymore.â Wilbur admits.Â
âWhat the fuck?â Quackity said with eyebrows pinching. His eyes flash with the start of understanding, hands shaking. âThatâs fucking bullshit! Youâre basically his-â
Quackityâs grip tightens around the lapels of Wilburâs coat, face twisting unhappily. Wilbur doesnât hide, letting him observe his unresisting figure.
âI abandoned him. My loyal, dutiful soldier who looked at me like I held the universe in the palm of my hand.â A rueful smile curls his lips, filled with self-hatred. âTell me Quackity, what happens when someone gives you that level of trust, who cares so much about your good opinion of them that theyâre willing to do whatever it takes to be in your good graces?âÂ
The shorter manâs hold stays firm, eyes glinting with flinty accusation. âI wouldnât know.â
âI think you do.â Wilburâs figure is unresistant in the otherâs grasp. âTommy needed to learn how to live for himself. But even more, Quackity-'' He straightens in his old enemyâs hold. âIf I stayed, I would never get to be the good guy in his story.â An unspoken addition passes between their locked gazes.
Quackity lets him go harshly, backing away a few steps and eying him wearily. âWhy are you here, Wilbur?â
âTo say hello.â Wilbur puts his hands in his pockets. âI wanted to see if the year I was gone was kinder to you.â They both knew it was not, but he didnât dare to say anything.
â...Congratulations, you saw me.â Quackity spits out. âNow leave my fucking country before I make you.â
Wilbur observes the beanie starting to tilt onto the side of Quackityâs head, dark circles etched into his skin. The revived man pulls out his carton of smokes and pulls out a piece of gum, extending an olive branch as he offers the stick to him.
The president of Las Nevadas glares at the offered gum.Â
âItâs bubblegum.â Wilbur says helpfully.
Quackity stares at it for a moment before reluctantly taking the stick and unwrapping it. âWhat the fuck. Where did you put your smokes?â
âThrew them away.â Wilbur states around his gum.
Quackity scoffs. âYeah right.â
Wilbur steps forward into his space, grabbing Quackityâs worn hand and bringing it over to the carton. His finger taps the brand, a blue and red poker chip that is worn and scratched. âThis is the last box I ever bought.âÂ
Quackity takes the carton and fingers the dents and aged cardboard. The color of his eyes burn in a way that makes Wilbur want to open his skull and peer into the flames. A few fragile heartbeats pass between them.
âGot rid of them after the first two weeks of working at a gas station.â Wilbur supplies, watching for Quackityâs reaction. âMy manager got nicotine patches. Nicoderm at first, the highest dose, until I weaned off of it and wore the occasional home-brew patch she concocts in her lab.â
âYou guys had a drug van?â Quackity asks, not moving away from the revived manâs grip.
âMore like a rusty recovery shack funded by local addicts.â Wilbur adds.
âYouâre kidding me.â Quackity guffawed. His reaction makes a small smile twitch on the revived manâs face. âWhat are the odds, man. Some things never change.âÂ
âWhat can I say, Quackity.â The name passes through his mouth reverently. âAn old dog doesnât learn new tricks to change the way it bites.â
âNo way, shut up.â Quackityâs eyes lighten for the first time in their encounter. âYou actually did it again?â
âHelped her set up the lab and her first customer.â Wilbur agrees easily. âThough I try to not get on vegan burger duty.â
âWhy, cause your burgers are shit?â
Wilbur smirks back. âIf Salt Lake City got a taste, the repressed bastards would never let me leave.â
âUtah doesnât get to have an opinion on food.â Quackity retorts. âAnd my actually still-running restaurant would one hundred percent wipe yours.â
âItâs had a year to thrive without my interference.â Wilbur draws away, pocketing his carton of gum. âThough I wouldnât say no to trying one, just to be sure it's up to par with mine.â
âWhatever you say, asshole.â Quackity rolls his eyes before grabbing the revived manâs sleeve (his short stature making it look comically childish) and dragging him away to the diner the block down. âWeâre also selling milkshakes now, by the way.â
âIâm lactose intolerant, Quackity.â
â...No youâre not.â
A smile spreads across Wilburâs face.
Quackity later moves a chef aside (only because it's 3pm and business is slow) to make a vegan burger for Wilbur, who only interferes to add in two splashes of paprika to his patty. And then some chopped onions, and a little Rosemary. Another patty ends up in there at some point as well, resulting in a meal they cooked together.
They eat their vegan burgers and split a strawberry shake between them.
Wilbur chucks a fry at Quackityâs serious face.
âTwo can play at that, asshole.â Quackity dips a fry in ketchup and smears a glob onto his old rivalâs forehead.
âI have been blessed by Prime.â Wilbur reaches blindly to smear a ketchup dick onto his forehead. âTake me to the nearest priest, Quackity, Iâm the next Grilled Cheezus.â
âNot if that's how you treat Ketchup.â
Wilbur shrugs before sitting back down. âMaybe Prime's into that. Say Quackity, if I'm a holy relic, am I unbanned from your country?â
âYour ban's just been doubled.â
âI was hoping youâd reconsider now that I am showing humble patronage to the local church.â
âI donât let dicks into my country.â Quackity flicks the symbol on Wilbur's head.
Wilbur hums, face slightly warm at the contact. âYou know, Iâm not sure where we should go for our next date then.â
âGo next?â Quackityâs forehead furrows with confusion. âDid you just say date?â
Wilburâs eyes widened at the slip of his tongue. âOr whatever you want it to be.â He blunders helplessly as his throat closes briefly.
Quackityâs eyes narrow with suspicion. âI'd rather know what you wanted it to be.â
The revived man pauses, scratching his neck. âWell, Iâve moved back permanently so I thoughtâŚâ
Quackity leans back, scoffing. âWhat, we could have another little get together so you could manipulate your way back into my good graces?â
Wilbur resists the urge to roll his eyes. The safe route would be to fall right back into their old dynamic of biting words and charged rivalry. It would feel safer, and easier on the both of them. But that wasnât
The smaller man rolls his eyes. âYou expect me to believe that?â
Wilbur puts down his burger, appetite lost. âQuackity, do you want to know the truth?â
Quackity eyes him wearily, gaze hardening at the lack of Wilbur willing to play their game. âWhat is it?â
âI came here to start over with you. Not because of any sort of guilt really, or to make up for leaving.â Wilbur admits. He exhales resolutely. âThereâs always been something between us, and I want to know what it is.â
The president of Las Nevadasâ eyebrows raise. âWilbur, you want to sleep with me?â
Wilbur steals the shake back. That side of him is a whole can of worms he doesnât want to open tonight. âWould you believe me if I said I just want to get to know you better?â
âWeâve known each other for years.â Quackity folds his arms. âIâm not hanging out with you for that reason.â
âWhatâs your favorite color?â Wilbur suddenly asks. âWhat do you do when youâre stressed, or really fucking happy?â
âYellow, smoking, and smoking on The Needle.â Quackity deadpans. âSo now that I answered your inane question, are we done?â
âI particularly like blue on stormy days.â Wilbur supplies instead of acknowledging his question. âAnd sometimes when Iâm stressed, I chew gum and stick it under Tommyâs bench to piss him off. I havenât felt happy in years.â
âWow.â Quackity reacts genuinely, reluctantly intrigued. âDid Tommy find out?â
âShroud caught me. Clever little kid bribed me for free cookies for a month.â Wilbur answers with a small laugh. He eyes his companion. âWhy the Needle?â
âIt's my pride and joy.â Quackity answers like itâs obvious. âRepresents where I started, and lets me see 360 degrees what Iâve accomplished since.â
Wilbur raises their milkshake. âAnd what an accomplishment youâve made, getting these onto the menu.â
âYou... do like strawberry.â Quackity admits.Â
âAnything fruit.â Wilbur agrees, secretly pleased Quackity remembered his sweets preference. âI have a soft spot for any of the reds. Strawberry, cherry, pomegranate, anything of the sort. I also like long walks on the beach, Guuci, and the attention of a certain little man in front of me.â
âLittle, huh." Quackity laughs incredulously. "Wow and I thought you wanted to be friends again.â
âI'd like that a lot, Quackity.â Wilbur realizes confidently as he says the words.Â
"...â Quackity looks away to hide his face.
âReally.â Wilbur pushes his shake over to Quackity. âIâll even share my shake with you.â
âWow, exclusive shake privileges from the Wilbur Soot. Iâm honored.â Quackity composes himself and takes a long sip.
âSufficiently bribed, I hope.â Wilbur pretends he isn't looking at him hopefully.
Quackity snorted and continued to suck on the straw. âI own this place.â
Wilbur hums, smiling at him fondly. âFair enough.â He straightens in the booth as an idea pops into his head. âSay, Quackity, what is your least favorite hobby?âÂ
âFishing and hanging out with you. Why?â
Wilbur smirks. âLets fish and spar.â
âSpar?â Quackity scoffed. âNow why the hell would I do that?â
âBecause it's my least favorite thing to do.â Wilbur drops, standing up while grabbing the last fry. âIâll pick you up tomorrow.â
âI never agreed to- hey!â Quackity protests as Wilbur walks out the door, waving behind him. He sits down, shaking his head with a smile of disbelief and sparkling eyes. âMan, what the hell is wrong with this guy.â
