LUKEWARM DEFENSE OF ADAMS INCOMING:
Adams is, I think, the real victim of S8 being the final season. I believe I've even read a Shore interview to that effect: that if they had realized this was the last season, they would have left her in jail.
We know S8 -- all House seasons -- were written in chunks of 6-7 episodes. So while the first batch is airing, the second batch is being filmed and edited, and the third batch is being written. Once you know this, it becomes super obvious: almost every subplot lasts 6-7 episodes, and tend to be pretty confined to their "chunks," right? No one ever mentions Vogler or Tritter again once they're gone; once Chase is divorced and Cameron is out, he's suddenly acting normal again.
This matters here, because... the writers didn't know or intend for S8 to be House's last. It was announced in February of 2012, right as episode 10 was airing. Hugh Laurie decided he was done. Even assuming he'd told the writers and producers privately a bit before this, this means that suddenly, the show needs to pivot to an ending, and at least half the episodes have already been written.
So what happens? Well, Chase starts getting character development left and right. Taub gets resolution. Foreman gets a little romantic subplot. House gets some loose ends tied up. Wilson gets cancer. And Adams... stops existing.
Adams has potential! She's yet another in a string of Cameron Remixes, but she has some interesting character threads. Her backstory is actually quite similar to Chase's original (pre-casting) pitch: miserable rich kid with suppressed anger. Her anger is actually one of the first things we learn about her, as well as her mischievousness sense of defiance and rebellion: she is the type of person to work for House, for free, because it's fun and interesting and she's profoundly unhappy. She's the type of person to want things to be nice and fair, but seems to not... really have a lot of experience or strong beliefs; she's not naĆÆve, exactly, but she's clinging to this faƧade of I Am So Normal And Everything Is Nice, and keeps getting startled by the mess of the world. But she isn't Cameron, insisting the world Act Fairly because of her own traumas: Adams is the type of woman who takes a job in a prison despite her trust fund and immense wealth to prove a point. She's also furiously angry and repressed and lost and defiant.
And these are interesting character beats! I can imagine her coming into her own, losing some of her innocence and (faked) Nice Girl exterior, being more snarky and cynical and House-ish. She has a manipulative streak and is hugely rebellious, she just acts like a Nice Girl, not because she isn't nice, but because that's the Expectation. She's lived in a bubble and wants to leave the bubble and is developing her own views.
But, you know. After episode ten, the show has to pivot to everyone else, and unlike Park -- who has a forceful personality and a functional use to the show (both as "comic relief" in a Big Bang Theory-ish "lol nerd" sense and as a driver for Chase's more important development) -- Adams gets thrown under the bus. She loses many of her personality traits, she gets no development or subplots to speak of, she becomes generic and forgettable. She is generic and forgettable. But in a different world, she wouldn't have been. It's not her fault she was stuck in the final season.
