So, im new to all this blogging- i mean who would of thought 18 years old and still not blogged! Anyway, I’m a carer, and have been for as long as i can remember! There’s even pictures of me at the age of 2, starting to do the washing up! I know that it seems like such a young age to take such a responsibility but there are times in the world when there aren’t people around to support your family. I’ll blog about my life as a carer, as well as news and stories I find from other carers!
So, as i’ve said I’m 18. My dad was in the navy when i was younger, so there was support when he was home. I care for both my mum and my brother (who’s a year younger then me!) I know many people consider caring to cover a physical element to it; but i cover more of a mental illness care! My mum, when younger broke her back, so can no longer lift; but can still carry out normal tasks; this is about as physical as i get really! My mum also suffers from depression- which covers both self harm and other symptoms! She’s also an alcoholic; so a bit of a range here! My brother, a troubled, misunderstood kid- has ADHD; (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), epilepsy and ODD (Oppositional defiant disorder). I could sit here and say that i hate being a carer; that i’ve had no support etc, etc; but i would be lying!
So, not many people know about the support available to them; from young carers, transitional carers (considered 15-25), and then adult carers (18+); this can be from a number of reasons. One being the service is not available to them; I know from recent events that funding is tight on all these services; and in fact the carers service that has supported me for the last 10 years has now had to downsize and can only support young carers therefore limiting access for those adult carers and family carers. However, there are many individuals out there who don’t know they are carers! I often talk to individuals on a chat site, where individuals discuss their problems; and a majority of the time these individuals have just picked up the duties of another due to a sudden illness, or even a child being born with disabilities; its kind of sprung upon them! I for one, don’t know how that feels for it to be sprung upon them and i’m grateful for that cause now i can help others achieve their greatest!
So my first post is now complete; i’ll discuss news topics, as well as find an inspirational way to encourage all carers that there is someone out there who can help you overcome! Many times; ill use my own experience to help, because that way individuals can see that it is possible! Thanks for reading this!
