Zombie Apocalypse Survival Kit

Survival kits during a full out zombie apocalypse differ from region to region and person to person. Everyone should be unique to the survivors needs. The basics are well known by the zombie enthusiast community. However, here are a few extras I feel that are deemed necessary.

-A Book. You will have some free time hiding out from the living dead, and with the inevitable power black out alternate forms of entertainment will be crucial. Make sure to pack one of your favorite pieces of literature for that long haul.

-A Deck of Cards. If your not surviving alone, a deck of cards or a small board game can be used to pass time and keep what sanity you have in this time of outbreak crisis.

-A Small Shovel. Everybody poops, that’s just a natural thing. Mostly zombies hunt by sound and smell, so make sure to bury that stuff… You never know if the undead are trailing you.

-Extra Pads and Tampons. (for female survivalists) Use reasons stated above if confused.

-A Wash Board. Clean clothes are a necessity, for obvious reasons mentioned above.

Prepare a zombie survival kit that would best suit your needs and aid you fest during an outbreak. Remember; Preparation or Annihilation!!!

Zombie Apocalypse Nutrition

Okay, the inevitable zombie apocalypse has come knocking at your door, and (if you haven’t been preparing) you’re frantically scurrying about your home or office seeking out makeshift melee weapons, packing foods, and generally preparing a survival kit. Right?

However, when it comes to food what are you packing? That bag of Doritos and six pack of Mountain Dew will only get you so far. So, here are a few tips when dealing with the issue of nutrition during an outbreak.

Short Term-

Canned Goods: Although very heavy, these have an excellent shelf life and come in a massively various array of tastes. You can buy almost any food in canned form, and I’d suggest picking up extras any time you go to market. Nevertheless, as I said before they are heavy and can be of greatest use when a safe house has been established.

Protein Bars: Light weight, extremely portable, and can sustain life weather on the move or safely barricaded. These have a shorter shelf life than canned goods, but are a great addition to any survival kit.

Multi-vitamins: Although these will not sustain life by themselves, they will aid in your nutrition by taking them a few times a day with meals. They also come in gummy form for adults now, which is a plus…

Long Term-

Throughout an apocalyptic size outbreak of the undead, the above mentioned will only last for so long. Even with rationing your supplies, a single person consumes a lot of food per month.

My advice: “Obtain a Green Thumb, not by becoming a flesh eating undead corpse, but by practicing Botany.” (the science of growing food) Gather some literature on agriculture and study up.

In my opinion, vegetarianism will be the safest of lifestyles. The reason being that we don’t truly know how the ‘plague’ will react with other species besides humans, and the risk seen to great to chance consuming infected meat.

As I always say… Preparation or Annihilation. So, get ready for it!!!

Zombies are Distracting

During the inevitably approaching zombie apocalypse you -more than likely- will be placed in a situation in which you are stranded in a location surrounded by the living dead. Whilst having successfully barricaded yourself in the latter mentioned local, you will eventually have to escape toward a safer environment. Like I've said before, no place is safe for the survivor on the move... only safer.

Fictional evidence (cause that's all we have to go on really) shows that the undead "hunt" primarily by sound. Argo, if you're trapped a noisy diversion may be your best bet at escaping unscaved.

Car Alarms- If confined to a large city, odds are there will be a vehicle nearby with an active alarm system. Discover a way to trigger this alarm, and wait patiently for the zombies to stumble toward its location.

Music- Weather it be an abandoned CD player, radio, PA system, or the Ipod you just can't seem to part with... place it far away, crank the volume up to 11, and be patient while the undead disperse.

While there are many more ways to lure zombies away from a location, I believe I've touched on several options on how to do so. Stay safe -and more importantly alive- out there. Remember, the zombies are coming!

Avoid The Undead

Alright, so the zombie apocalypse has begun and (if unprepared) the first questions that come to mind are as such. Where do I go? What do I do? Where is 'safe'?

First off, no place is safe... only safer. REMEMBER THAT! Secondly, everyones zombie survival plan should be unique and focused around the area in which you reside. If you don't have one, devise one.

However, I would like to offer some advice on where NOT to go during an outbreak.

-Hospitals. This is where the outbreak of the undead will likely begin. Someone gets bit or feels ill with fever and they go here. Don't risk it unless you are in SERIOUS need of medical attention.

-Malls. This one is a favorite among the zombie genre, but it never ends well. Too many exits to barricade, too many large glass windows, and frankly way to many spots for the infected to be hiding out.

-Military Bases. During the zombie apocalypse the government will be broadcasting over the airwaves that all non-infected should seek these bases out. I for one, feel that the security of entry would be unacceptable to my standards and someone who was bit would sneak in, damning all who sought shelter there.

And my last piece of avoidance advice:

-Any Large City. If the population of the city you're in is over 500,000 occupants, chances are that the majority of these people will become infected and try to eat your brains. Stick to unpopulated areas. Remember: If there's fewer people around, chances are there will be fewer zombies around as well.

Chainsaw + Zombie = ???

The Chainsaw (in my opinion) is one of the most questionable melee weapons when it comes to killing zombies. From Ash in the Evil Dead series, to the survivors in Left 4 Dead 2... where there are zombies in the media, there's likely a maniac wielding one of these power tools. But is it justifiable?

In the beginning of 2012 comes a new take on zombie slaying in the game world, Lollipop Chainsaw. In a nutshell, it's about a chainsaw wielding cheerleader surviving the zombie apocalypse. (not speaking negatively against the title, I'm actually looking forward to playing it...) My question is; with all this emphasis through media on zombies and chainsaws, won't the public have a warped view on surviving an actual outbreak?

Personally, the chainsaw as a rational survival weapon is out of the question, here's why...

-Fuel. You're going to have a hard enough time trying to find gas for an apocalypse vehicle (if your plan calls for one) let alone finding fuel for your weapon. Think about it; how many times did you see Ash use his in The Army of Darkness? Not much...

-Noise. Just the sound of a chainsaw alone is enough to deter me from its use. Its engine noise travels for a least a mile, maybe more. Most zombies can still hear, and use this sense for finding another meal.

-Splatter. Try out a chainsaw (if you have one readily available) on a log or stump, and see just how many wood chips and shavings accumulate on your clothes and skin. Now, imagine talking that same saw to the neck or cranium of an undead. You would literally be bathing yourself in the coagulated blood and fluids of an infected.

Just about the only way I'd use a chainsaw during the zombie apocalypse would be in a last resort scenario to survive. Cause let's face it... that is the main objective, right? To survive...

Items Overlooked In Zombie Survival Kits

A Zombie Apocalypse will bring with it more destruction, gore, and violence that you could ever imagine in your craziest of dreams. The outbreak will literally turn what society deems 'order' in to chaos.

Weather you're completely unprepared or have a machete and 'bug out' bag setting by your front door, NEVER consider yourself fully prepared.

Having said that, here's items I feel could easily be overlooked in the preparation of a zombie survival kit.

-Prescription Eyeware (two parts)

A: Don't think that pair of two week disposables you've been wearing for a month or two will get you through the zombie apocalypse. Even if you don't wear them now, get a pair of glasses to put in your survival kit.

B: If you wear glasses on a daily basis, get a backup pair. Noone wants to be Velma from Scooby Doo when being chased by the undead.

-Medications. If you take medicine that you have to have on a daily basis (insulin for example) keep these in mind before you flee your home from the living dead.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again... Preparation or Annihilation!!!

Transportation During A Zombie Apocalypse

Unless you have expensively fortified your home/safehouse for an undead outbreak, you will have to travel during the Zombie Apocalypse. Provisions in a single area will only hold out for so long.

How will you travel? What means of transport will keep you safest, as well as be dependable? Here's a few options.

During the chaos of an outbreak, the odds of acquiring an armored car of some sorts increases drastically. This would be the safest way to travel, although fuel consumption would be a negative factor.

In The Zed Word's opinion, an SUV with a bicycle (just in case) is the route I would choose. Most SUV's are all terrain and will definitely get you around an apocalyptic wasteland with ease. As a bonus, various newer models are more fuel efficient which will cut back on hazardous stops for fuel.
