Do you believe the queen's judgement to be sound? I would not serve her otherwise.

HOUSE OF THE DRAGON | Season 3, Episode 2, "Queen's Landing"
"Seeing the shift in Rhaenyra's face and whole body as she sees Alicent. This breaks something in her. From this scene onward, Rhaenyra changes in a way that she doesn't even really completely understand in that moment." – Clare Kilner
HOUSE OF THE DRAGON | Season 3, Episode 2, "Queen's Landing"
ryan condal and co.: we want to examine how misogyny sets the foundation for this civil war headed by two rival queens who lived through the horrors of interfamilial sexual abuse over the course of their adolesence and are now faced with a patriarchal society that flat out doesnt want them
hotd audience: condal and co. are writing fanfic at this point why aren't rhaenyra and alicent just flatly cutthroat and bond-villain-level ambitious with no real meat behind their actions i Hate having to think about character motivations why cant we have Real complex women *more fanfic complaints* *ignoring the fact that the majority of things that happen to rhaenyra and alicent have also happened to cersei, whom they love*
I have accepted that lucking out into getting a show about my favorite thing with this kind of budget that is written, directed, and acted almost exclusively to my specific tastes means that everyone else is hating from the outside and hating loudly. No accounting for taste.
The problem is that the HOTD showrunners are allergic to the idea of Rhaenyra and Alicent having any agency or involvement in immoral behavior.
Rhaenyra is completely uninvolved in Blood and Cheese, she doesn’t express murderous hatred towards her siblings, her justifiably violent and mournful reaction to the stillbirth of her only daughter is heavily muted, Nettles is erased from existence and so the complexity of one victim of grooming being jealous and misogynistic towards another victim is erased, Alicent has zero control over her children and therefore zero influence in politics beyond inventing a sexual relationship with Criston Cole etc. They have to give Rhaenyra an almost word-for-word Elizabeth I line (that is insanely sexist by our standards, especially when stripped of the context that Elizabeth was pragmatically saying this to an army of male soldiers) about ‘having the heart and spirit of a king’ but she doesn’t have the heart or the spirit of a king. At all.
That being said the ‘evil stepmother’ trope is washed and it would make more sense if Fire & Blood was written like the actual Anarchy where Rhaenyra’s ultimate opponent is not Aegon, but his wife/power behind the throne Helaena. The real Queen Matilda of Boulougne and Empress Matilda were ten times more interesting than whatever is going on here.
what do you think they might be trying to communicate about gender violence and war by adapting it like this. I think if you can’t see that they’re deliberately trying to tell a story about both of these women’s perpetual desperate struggle to claw for control and get out of these situations that patriarchy has trapped them in you are hating from outside
fuuuck they are putting me to work at work 😭😭😭😭
