Punctuating Dialogue

➸ “This is a sentence.”

➸ “This is a sentence with a dialogue tag at the end,” she said.

➸ “This,” he said, “is a sentence split by a dialogue tag.”

➸ “This is a sentence,” she said. “This is a new sentence. New sentences are capitalized.”

➸ “This is a sentence followed by an action.” He stood. “They are separate sentences because he did not speak by standing.”

➸ She said, “Use a comma to introduce dialogue. The quote is capitalized when the dialogue tag is at the beginning.”

➸ “Use a comma when a dialogue tag follows a quote,” he said.

“Unless there is a question mark?” she asked.

“Or an exclamation point!” he answered. “The dialogue tag still remains uncapitalized because it’s not truly the end of the sentence.”

➸ “Periods and commas should be inside closing quotations.”

However, if it’s not dialogue exclamation points can ask be “outside”!

Writer means: So I had this crazy idea either right before getting in the shower or right before falling asleep so I grabbed my fucking laptop and shat all over it to create the steaming pile of crap that I now lay before you. I don’t even know if it’s good anymore. I haven’t slept in two days.

Writer says: Wow, real life’s getting busy! Sorry on the slow updates.

Writer means: My life is a literal storm of shit at the moment. Why did I decide to do this. Why am I still doing this. Everything around me is spinning out of control and I am staying up ‘til 5:30 in the morning every night to create a piece of work that will only get two comments and 12 demands for quicker updates. I hope no one’s mad at me, all I wanted to do was write.

Writer means:  WOOOOOOHOOOOOO BITCHES LOOK AT THIS PRODUCTIVE ASSHOLE GO YEEEEEHAAAAWWWW TAKE THAT YOU NASTY REVIEWERS ALWAYS DEMANDING ME TO BE FASTER! I GOT THIS SHIT I GOT THIS SHIT

Writer says: This chapter was a toughie. Glad it’s finally done!

Writer means: I don’t know if this is good or not. I honestly don’t fucking know. I’ve read the same words over and over and over again and I just couldn’t look at it anymore. My beta said it was ok but I’m not confident but HOLY SHIT I JUST NEED TO STOP WRITING THIS FUCKIGN CHAPTER.

Writer says: Thanks for reading!

Love Bites

“Uh, Ignis?” Prompto sauntered over to his friend, eyeing him curiously as Ignis adjusted the fit of his jacket, pulling at the lapels so it laid flat against his chest.

“Yes, Prompto?”

“I don’t mean to be that guy,” he snickered, reaching up and poking at the small, reddened bruises that marked up Ignis’ neck. “But what are those?”

Ignis tilted his head as if he was oblivious, doing his best to suppress the blush that threatened to wash over his features. “I don’t know what you mean.”

“Leave him alone, Prompto,” Gladio smirked, clapping his giant hand on the back of the blond’s shoulder. “It’s just proof that Iggy had a good time before he came back to HQ.”

“Ah,” Ignis idly adjusted his darkened spectacles so they rose higher on the bridge of his nose. “I suppose Raine may have gotten carried away before my departure. She was rather…ravenous in her goodbyes.”

Prompto couldn’t help but snicker behind his hand, unable to hold in his laughter. “Oh, man. It looks like you went up against a behemoth and lost.”

Gladio shot him a glare. “Prompto.”

“What?” Prompto asked in jest, elbowing Ignis slightly on his arm. “I’m just saying, you and Raine are just like teenagers. Do those also fall under your rule of ‘If I don’t see it, it isn’t there’?”

“Actually,” Ignis snapped, tired of the indignation. “Raine and I are a happily married couple with a toddler son who is almost at your reading level. And, might I add, if you care so much about my physical wellbeing, you are more than welcome to examine the marks that my wife left behind that are currently hidden by my Crownsguard uniform. Or are we quite done here?”

Prompto gulped, taken aback by the sudden change in Ignis’ voice. He knew finality when he heard it. “Yeah,” he replied, his hands up even though Ignis couldn’t see, his voice light and passive. “We’re done.”

“Good,” Ignis replied with a clipped done before turning on his heel and strutting off, pulling his phone from his pocket. He spoke into the voice command, silently cursing the fact that Raine had locked her contact name as Snugglebunnykins, and waited as it rang.

“Hello?”

“Hello, my love,” Ignis greeted, sounding just slightly rushed. “May I ask, when we were intimate just before I left for HQ, were you aware of how…enthusiastic you were with the love bites you bestowed upon my neck?”

Raine let out a laugh, one that started with a snort, and had to physically coach herself down so that she could speak properly again. “Oh, yeah. They’re dark.”

Ignis groaned into the phone.

“Hey,” she teased, her tone turning sultry in a way that shot blood straight to Ignis’ groin. “Next time you’re back, I’ll let you mark me up, huh? Then we can call it even.”

“My love,” Ignis sighed, unable to stay upset at her for long, especially over something like this. “You don’t play fair.”

“The other boys are just jealous,” Raine replied, and he could see her shrugging in his mind’s eye. “If they think the ones on your neck are bad, they should see the ones I left on your inner thighs––”

“Alright, my love, I have to be off,” Ignis replied hurriedly, the blush coming on in full force. “I’ll return home to you soon.”

“You’d better,” she purred. “Can’t wait for you to come back and teach me a lesson.”

Ignis swiftly said his goodbyes and hung up the phone before beelining in the direction of the showers. Having to face his friends with the love bites Raine had left behind was one thing––he was not about to face them with an erection tenting his pants as well.
