I never realized how badly I wanted to read a platonic version of the “two characters dancing around their feelings” trope until now. The pining. but for a Family. Two unrelated characters behaving like family but refusing to acknowledge it. Wanting to be family but not knowing how to do that or if the other wants that too. Desperate not to screw up the good unspoken thing they got goin on but still wanting to say something wanting to know to be loved like that like family GOD,,,I’m writhing on the ground

#fma #meta #I love when someone actually dives in and points out something that I didn’t realize on reading #for example that ed and al actually spend like 4 or 5 years learning alchemy before trying to bring their mom back #and how long that is when you’re a kid like #that’s the amount of time between kindergarten and fifth grade #that’s a long fuckin time especially for a kid both time wise and developmentally wise

Hey. Hey @proserpine-in-phases. Did you ever realize that Sara Rockbell was only one year older than Trisha? Did you ever realize that she was only three years older than Trisha ever got when she was killed? Did you ever realize that Sara and Yuriy were killed the same year Ed and Al did their apprenticeship under Izumi, and that those six months they were gone left Winry more alone that she’d ever been in her life before that?

There are some details that just. Got brushed over in favor of the overall plot development. And honestly the pace of the manga is excellent, I love it, but there are these details, these little establishing, fundamental aspects of the characters that really shape their personalities and reactions so much more once you learn them.

The irony of this coming up right now when we’re in the middle of a thread where 03 and manga Ed find out how old the other was when Trisha died.

“What do you mean you were five?”

“What do you mean you weren’t?!”

The realization that they were so young in the manga they barely had time to get to know her, but also that they spent like five years studying to bring her back, as opposed to just the one.

Manga, upon meeting 03: calls him Envy, compares him to Tucker after seeing his vulpix and invites himself to stay at his place indefinitely

The AU we could have had, but didn't. Manga was supposed to arrive while 03 was absent, resulting in him meeting COS Al first.

There was actually no punching by the time manga arrived and Al - and the person 03 shared his bed with - was already gone.

Random facts about this universe:

2003 Ed is an adult

He's been world hopping for some time due to the nature of how games run on dreamwidth

Manga Ed showed up in the current universe 03 was living, decided 03 is too depressed to live on his own and moved in with him

Because of the age and maturity difference, the authorities treat 03 like manga's guardian. They both hate it.

Really, it's manga babysitting 03.

Due to time jump shenanigans, 03 is (and appears) around 23 but has lived over 40 years. He doesn't like to talk about it.

Manga is from around the Briggs arc and has lived there approximately a year now

Due to universe jumping shenanigans, manga met another (similar) version of 03 from an alternate reality. We differentiate by calling manga Ed "manga" and 03 may be referred to as "Riverview" or "Zhautas" when we need to differentiate

These are the locations manga met them

Manga Roy, Al and Winry are also present

CoS Al is referred to but no longer there

03 has lived with many different versions of Al and Winry over the years

03 has a number of cats, pokemon and two dogs

I'll probably add to this if I think of anything else but that's the general rundown. I don't expect anyone to actually care about this but I'll try to answer questions anyone has.
