âSo⌠this is it?â
I looked around the dimly lit bunker, trying to hide the underwhelmed reaction. I scanned the large room, seeing a wall of what used to be windows - most of them missing the glass - surrounding a circle platform in the middle of the entirety of the bunker. It looked like a pile of junk sitting within the room. Two mini staircases on either side of the platform, with beds to the right and a vacant area to the left. I dropped Peteâs luggage he had me unload with him, walking deeper into the room. Pete watched me as I looked around.
âWhat, not fancy enough for âya?â He asked, standing in the spot I had just left. Watching me.
I guess I hadnât hidden it as well as I thought I did.
I walked up the stairs, running a finger along the handrail. I picked it up, inspecting it before responding to him.
âSorry for expecting something not covered in dust.â I replied, pointing my finger towards him in significance. I raised my eyebrows, brushing my hands off and continuing up the stairs.
He cleared his throat, shifting uncomfortably.
âHasnât been used in a while.â He gruffed out, dropping the bag he was holding next to the one already on the floor. I looked toward the back of the room, seeing a huge- but empty- kitchen. I even caught a glimpse of cobwebs in the top corner.
âYeah, I can tell.â I deadpanned, looking at him with a smirk. He walked over to one of the pillars, leaning against it. A smile pulled ever so lightly at the corners of his mouth. My face heated under his stare. I turned from him, continuing to walk into the circled room.
I passed through the threshold of the broken doorway, finally getting a glimpse at what lay in the room. My mouth dropped, my eyes mirroring the awe that awoke my hibernating heart. I saw Pete move from the corner of my eye, but I ran my hand over the first computer, admiring the priceless setup.
âYou know how to work that thing?â Pete asked, now standing in the same threshold I had just passed through.
I blew the dust off the top of the computers, running a hand over the keyboards and analytic station. My heart was beating with excitement as I gently tried to clean it. I needed to see this baby in action.
âAre you kidding?â I asked, crouching down to follow through to where all the cords were gathered, sitting right outside the power strip on the ground. I was half scared the wires had been cut or messed with and would shock me, but any and all excitement for the possibility of it working outweighed my worries. âThis is my whole thing.â I finished.
I plugged it in, with nothing but a little spark to fight back. I brushed my hands, standing up and looking around the multiple computers for the power button.
âI thought it was being a sharpshooter?â Pete retorted sarcastically. I gave him an exasperated look before putting my finger at the back of the computer, pressing it in.
âIâm a woman of many talents.â I winked at him, looking at the computers that now lit up white in front of me. Pete chuckled softly, coming to stand right next to me and watch as it came to life. The technology was severely outdated, sure- and I was reminded of this by how long it took to start up- but it looked like it had all the necessary components for hacking, surveillance, analysis of any kind- you name it. Any information you wanted, it could be found through this decades-old piece of hope.
We stood there for a few minutes, staring at the little bar underneath the brand logo, watching it barely move over the span of several minutes. It would be a while, but I was entranced.
After a few more minutes, Pete left from my side and walked into the kitchen, which I could see from behind the computer setup. I had sat down, my legs up on the desk as I inspected each and every piece of equipment within the room. I was messing with the retinal scan device that had been propped on top of the screen when I heard rattling from the kitchen.
I begrudgingly put the device down, sitting up in the chair to peek out over the computers. I saw Pete moving stuff around in the cupboards, taking out a glass to set on the island counter behind him. I watched him, curiously.
He got a bottle of whiskey out of the cabinet, inspecting it and the glass before him before shrugging and starting to drink it- straight out of the bottle.
I got up, quickly walking over to the kitchen right in front of him. He looked at me in question, bringing the bottle away from his lips. He swallowed then opened them to ask me something before I took the bottle out of his hands and started chugging it myself. The smoky burning spreading through my throat was welcomed, as was the familiar heat starting at the bottom of my stomach.
âLong day?â He asked, putting his hands on the counter and watching me. I met his eye contact, taking a few more swigs before pulling it away. I used the back of my hand to wipe my mouth, holding out the bottle for him to take. He continued to watch me, starting to drink once again. I kept my face still, despite his attempt at playful conversation. I watched his throat bob with every chug, his lips moistening with the alcohol. The familiar feeling of anticipation settled over the room, reminding me that he was talking to me. I had forgotten it all together, pulling my gaze from his lips and looking into his eyes. He pulled the bottle from his mouth, pouring himself a glass and setting it on the counter before returning my stare.
I decided not to answer him, instead walking behind him to get another glass out. I could feel him watching me as I spotted the glasses on the highest shelf. I stood up on my toes to reach for it, immediately paying the price. I instantly crumpled in pain, my hand going to my stomach to wrap around the deep injury I had forgotten about. I winced, my other hand bracing on the counter. Pete instantly walked to my side, silent but searching for the source of the pain.
Shit. I forgot about that.
I looked at the ground, my eyes shut as the stinging pain ran through my body. I breathed out shakily, letting out a breathy, sarcastic laugh. I wasnât even sure what I was laughing at, and by the look on his face when I opened my eyes and looked up at him, Pete wasnât sure either.
Maybe the fact that I had just started to think I could forget about this incessant reminder on my stomach.
I bit my lip to momentarily distract from the pain as I searched his eyes, bringing up the courage to talk.
âGonna need your help.â I said, panting. I didnât realize Iâd been holding my breath.
He just furrowed his brows, standing still in front of me. I kept my one hand over my injury, pushing myself up and off the counter. I grabbed the bottle of whiskey, trudging past Pete and towards - what I guessed was- a bathroom. I heard his steps follow me after a moment of hesitation.
I pushed open the door, turning the lights on which cast a blueish-green over the peeling cream-colored walls. It looked like a communal bathroom, with urinals against the wall to my left. The sinks lined the wall in front of me, one mirror broken and the others so dirty nothing could be seen in them. The showers were behind me, across from the sinks. I walked in front of the broken mirror, throwing open the door of it to see a first aid kit.
I need to ask him about all these perfectly-placed first aids.
I made that thought a mental note for later, taking out the kit and setting it on the sink. Pete came to my side, watching me mess with the contents.
I finally looked up at him, giving him a weary look before I lifted my shirt up. He averted his gaze at first, which made me softly chuckle. I held my shirt against my chest with my chin, looking at the day-old bandages that loosely lay across my waist. I saw Pete bring his attention back to me as I grimaced. I looked up in the mirror, not wanting to look at the wound up close. I held my shirt up with one hand, the other grabbing the edge of the bandage and slowly starting to unwrap it from my waist.
My heart was pounding in my ears. I couldnât tell where the anxiousness was coming from- if it was because Pete was standing right next to me, with my shirt halfway off, or from the amount of blood I could feel myself losing, or because I knew what lay underneath the bandages. Maybe all of the above. I didnât feel like facing this agonizing piece of my past, but I knew I had to face it eventually. Better now before I bleed out.
As I repeated the last sentence in my mind, the last piece of gauze fell from my waist. Anger filled my heart and eyes. Pete stiffened beside me, both of us holding our breath.
The bandages fell to the floor, blood starting to fall from what was carved into the side of my stomach:
L R
I had no more sadness in me, no tears threatening to spill. Either I had gotten all of them out of my system, or any sort of loss I had felt was replaced with a starving desire for revenge. I could swear that my body temperature raised, the anger emitting off of me in waves of heat.
My gaze switched to Peteâs face through the mirror. He stared at the initials, putting the pieces together in his mind. He looked angry as well, but remained silent. I was grateful for him not prying.
I broke the veil of silence between us, taking another long chug from the bottle of whiskey. Another grimace from the burn, but liquid courage was something I would be grateful for in a minute from now. I set the bottle back on the edge of the sink with a little more force than needed.
âCould youâŚâ I trailed off, holding up the clean cloth.
He took the cloth from my hand, staring down at me with an intensity I couldnât quite place.
I gave him half of a smile, going back to stare at the carving. Pete fumbled with some stuff in the kit on the counter, his back to me. I opened my mouth to ask him what was taking so long, but he had turned around and faced me in that same instant.
I held eye contact with him as he looked down at me, putting his hands on my lower waist and moving me so that my body was facing him. His hold was firm, but soft. He used a piece of gauze to wipe off the blood that started to trail down my hip, his brows furrowed in concentration. I watched his face, how his jaw was set and he breathed much lighter as he scrubbed my stomach. His eyes were determined, his tongue darting out to wet his lips as he folded the gauze, throwing it away. I didnât register any pain, being completely entranced in watching him. My heart had been beating deeply- not particularly hard, or with worry, just⌠heavily.
He had something else in his hand, but I didnât try to look at it. I was still watching him when he suddenly got down on his knees in front of me. Thatâs when my heart started to beat pretty hard in my chest. My feet shifted, his hands going to my waist once again to hold me still as he got comfortable on the floor- on his knees. He looked up at me then, from the floor. His eyes met mine and at first, any emotion behind them had been indiscernible.
I need to know what heâs thinking.
I looked further into his eyes, past the initial layer of coldness.
He looked at me with fondness, with curiosity. With pity.
Itâs like he felt it in that moment too- the breaking of the barrier he had put up behind his eyes. His throat bobbed, but his face remained neutral. It became too much then. Too much emotion, too much tension between the positions we were in and the fact I was confident I had mastered the deciphering of this manâs visual emotional cues.
I looked away, once again watching us through the mirror. His eyes stayed on my face for a moment longer before his hands went up to the abrasions on my stomach, when I saw he held a needle and thread.
It seemed that we had done a lot of tending to wounds these past few days, and though I shouldâve started to get used to the stitching, it was hard to watch. I grabbed the bottle once again, only taking a small sip- I finally started to feel the effects of my earlier drinks. A little bit to numb the pain, but not enough.
The stinging rang through my stomach and legs, to the bottom of my feet. I grabbed the edge of the sink, my head falling slightly. Pete was silent, concentrating on his stitching as he made quick work of it.
My eyes were squeezed shut for most of it, trying to clear my mind of any thoughts to pass the time quicker. It seemed to work- either that method or the alcohol- as it seemed like only a few minutes had passed before Pete spoke.
âAll done.â
My eyes shot open like I had just woken up, and the room blurred into view. I let go of the sink, standing up and wobbling a bit. Peteâs hand went out to my lower back to prevent me from falling back. My cheeks had already been warm since my sudden consciousness a few seconds ago, but Iâm sure they got even warmer with his touch. I looked down at my stomach, looking at the stitches. They were clean, and as good as I could hope for, but the obvious initials werenât any less clear.
The L R was bold and taunting- the clearest voice in my head.
Donât forget who you belong to.
I cleared my throat, taking what I told myself would be the last drink. I took a long sip, long enough that Pete got impatient and took it from my mouth, taking a couple sips of his own. I smiled, my eyes more closed than they were before as I watched him. He watched me too, the ghost of a smile on his own lips.
We sat in comfortable silence, breathing in and out deeply through the fading pain of my wound, and the lasting effects of a tense situation. One that seemed to affect him more than getting shot at earlier. He pulled the bottle from his lips- with only a tiny bit left.
A beat of silence passed between us, both of us letting the liquor settle before I spoke.
âThis place got any music?â
â
I felt the beat of the song vibrating through my skin and into my bones. I had no control over my body as I swayed, occasionally flailing my arms when the bass kicked up. The room spun, and I got dizzy if I moved any faster than extremely slow. I felt so good. I couldnât think of the last time I had this much fun.
Pete sat on the floor, an empty bottle next to him and another in his hand. He had one leg out in front of him, the other bent as he rested his arm on it. He was watching me, his head swaying to the beat and laughing whenever I stumbled and tried to catch myself. We would laugh, sing, mime the lyrics to the song.
The music was loud, but not too loud as to cover the sounds of his low laughter- which only fueled my beating heart as well as my uncontrollable dancing. I looked back at him, laughing at myself before a slight sting hit me again. I winced a tiny bit but was still laughing, falling to the ground by his feet.
I stared at the ceiling, watching it try to catch up with my eyes and caught my breath.
I suddenly thought of a question I was rather curious about, and I didnât think twice as I sat up. I turned, laying on my stomach and propping my elbows up so my head was resting atop my knuckles. I looked at him, a smile plastered on my face against my will. I couldnât get it off my face, even though the atmosphere changed into something a bit more serious.
He turned his face towards mine, putting the bottle down and offering me his attention.
âSoâŚâ I began, one of my hands starting to trace shapes aimlessly on the ground. âYouâre not gonna ask?â
I could see the understanding in his eyes, and I didnât offer any more clarification. He looked down at the ground, shrugging.
âFigure youâd tell me if you wanted to.â He said, looking back up at me.
I stared at him.
He wasnât going to pry, or beg for answers to questions he wasnât sure Iâd wanna answer. He saved me, but didnât force me to tell him anything about my past, or why I was where I was. He didnât force me to do anything I didnât want to, and brought me to this bunker. This most likely secret bunker, as a refuge from the hands of the people we had both been tortured by. He had gotten me food, and new clothes. A motel. He patched up my wounds, on multiple occasions- sometimes without even needing me to ask.
Maybe it was the alcohol- the sudden boost of confidence and the lack of wariness over any future consequences. Or maybe it was the way he was looking at me, as if weâd known each other for much longer than a few days. As if this was the start of something that would change our lives- for better or worse.
Maybe it was both.
I sat up, slowly crawling over to him. He opened his legs a little wider to accommodate as I crawled between them, placing my hands on his knees. I sat up on the heels of my feet, analyzing his face. The bruises that had once been aggressive and purple were now a muted yellow if not gone without a trace. His eyes were soft and inviting, his chest moving up and down increasingly. He looked at me as well, at my lips. I leaned in slowly, half because I wanted to give him time if he didnât like where this was going, and half because if I had gone any faster I mightâve fallen to the ground.
His eyes switched from my eyes to my lips, being patient but subtly leaning his face towards mine. I pressed my lips to his softly, the lightest of touches. After only a few seconds I looked to his eyes, which were closed with his brows knitted together and his lips pursed, like he didnât want or expected the kiss to end so soon. I felt his breath as he let out a faint exhale. I smirked, finally getting impatient and once again closing the distance between us.
I pressed my lips against his firmly, pulling away quickly to go in again. I opened my mouth this time, molding our lips together. He tasted of whiskey. He let me take control, kissing me back but with a gentleness I didnât think he had in him.
I slowly pulled away after a couple seconds, leaning back on my arms and crossing my legs. I smirked at him, feeling the blush over my face. He smiled at me too, shaking his head and looking down at his hands that sat in his lap. The music played low in the back, seeming even lower than before as we enjoyed each otherâs presence.
Something had shifted between us- definitely now, but even before the kiss. I felt closer to him, and I wanted to tell him everything. I wanted him to know everything about me. I wanted him to know me, and I wanted to know him. I heard myself talking before I could even process it.
âLR.â I started, tracing a finger over the shirt and bandages that hid the mark. âLeonardo Ricci. He was my boyfriend.â
I looked everywhere but him, not having the strength to look in his eyes- even at the level of drunk I was. I could see in my peripheral that he was staring at me, listening intently and to every word.
âActually- no.â I shook my head, closing my eyes for a moment to laugh dryly and sarcastically at my mistake. âMy fiancĂŠ.â
I could see his jaw clench, his hands that were in his lap folding into fists and him hiding them from my view. I continued, feeling empty so far towards my painful confessions.
âWeâve been- or uh, we were together forâŚâ I trailed off, trying to remember exactly how long we had been together. It seemed Iâd been stuck with him my entire life. âI think twelve years, going on thirteen.
âI donât even really remember when it became official. We were expected to be married since weâd been born- family traditions and all that. We both come from very powerful families. Families that wanted to unify and take over New York. Then the East coast. Then the whole country.â I shook my head, finally lifting it to look at him. He was staring at me in concentration, in sympathy. An intense stare, like he was seeing me in an entirely new light and yet in his eyes, I was still the same, all at once. I continued.
âMy whole life, Iâve been raised to marry him- to marry Leo, and continue our fucked up mob business with him and his family. Theyâve been training me my whole life for that. Like cattle to be slaughtered. Endless⌠sitting in on meetings, witnessing the deaths of countless innocents, getting sent to kill anyone who questioned us. Even self defense classes.
âYet none of it prepared me to have to fight for my life against the one person Iâd been raised to love.â I didnât realize my eyes had been watering until I blinked and a tear fell down my face. I wiped it instantly, shaking my head shamefully. âHeâs all Iâve ever known.â
I leaned forward, putting my head down and sitting with my legs crossed only a foot away from him. It brought me physical pain to have to bring this up again. At that moment, I felt as if I would never be able to talk about it without crying. Without digging up every single terrible feeling Iâd ever felt regarding them- my family, Leo.
I breathed in and out deeply, sniffling and trying to reign my emotions back in. There was so much more that needed to be said. So much more that I wanted to tell him, but telling everything all at once proved to be difficult.
As this thought went through my head, I felt a hand touch my cheek, bringing my face back up into the light.
He held the side of my face softly, staring into my eyes as if he could transfer his thoughts. I see you, and I understand.
I leaned into his hand, smiling softly at him.
It was him who now leaned forward, connecting our lips quickly. This kiss was even more passionate and intimate, the salty taste of my tears on our lips they molded together. He held me close, getting more firm everytime we pulled away just to reconnect again.
He pulled me in as much as he could, using both his hands to grab my face and communicate all he could into the kiss. I furrowed my brows, placing my hands on top of his own and kissing him back with as much fervor.
We slowly eased up our hold on one another, pulling away reluctantly. He rested his forehead against my own, rubbing my cheek with his thumb.
After a few moments like this, I pulled my head away, running my hands down his arms and putting them back into his lap. I bit at my lip, not knowing where to start.
âDid you love him?â Pete gruffed out, sudden but soft- not knowing if he had crossed a line.
I swallowed, taking a few moments to think before answering.
âAt one point.â I responded, nodding as the memories came back to me. âThen the line between true love and manipulation started to fade together.â
The silence came back as we both thought about all that had been said. Peteâs hand came out to rest on my thigh, rubbing comfortingly.
I couldnât think too hard on the feelings these memories brought back, though I knew where and when they came from. The alcohol still buzzed through my head and stomach, and my body swayed back and forth unwillingly. It was like word vomit, and I couldnât stop it. Everything I had said was against my will, yet I couldnât find myself caring too much about it. If anything, I felt a tiny weight had been brought off my chest as I had said the words. I would definitely regret all of this tomorrow.
For now, the butterflies in my stomach from the alcohol and desire for the man Iâd kissed- several times now- in front of me was the only thing I could focus on. I wanted to have fun, and I wanted to make out a little bit more. I just wanted more. And my drunk self would get it. I closed my eyes, swaying a little harder to the song playing. The music had just come back to my senses, as if I had blocked it out before. I didnât recognize it, but I danced in my place on the floor all the same. My closed eyes helped me focus on the music, feeling it everywhere. I sat contently on the floor, Peteâs hand still on my thigh.
The liquor swam through my veins, going straight to my legs.
Maybe I should get up and dance instead.
I opened my eyes, looking at Pete again. He seemed in deep thought, looking off to the floor. His thumb rubbing circles on my thigh never stopped.
Or maybe we should make out some more.
I, too, became entranced in thought as I debated between the two.
âFrank.â He spoke suddenly.
I snapped out of my thoughts, only hearing a grumble out of the man in front of me.
â... What?â I asked, not sure if he even said anything at all.
âFrank. Itâs my name- my real name.â
I stared at him.
This fucker gave me a fake name.
I broke out into a huge smile, watching the confusion paint his face before I took his hand that was on my thigh into my own, shaking it. He stared at me, a smile breaking out onto his own face as I climbed onto his lap, straddling him.
I was an inch from his face when I looked into his eyes, still holding his hand.
âNice to meet you, Frank.â I slurred, kissing him for the however-manyth time that night.
I put my hand on the bottom of his chin, using my thumb to slightly pull his mouth open. I wasted no time in using my tongue to tentatively massage his own, testing what he did and didnât want to do. He did the same, using his own tongue to explore my mouth as I felt him sit up straighter. I smiled into the kiss.
His arms wrapped around me, one around my waist and the other across my back, holding onto my shoulder. I knew that wasnât a gun he had in his pocket, and that made me smile even bigger as I continued to explore his mouth. My hand was on his shoulder, the other at his nape, the tips of my fingers in his hair. Our tongues came together again and again, the taste of whiskey- and copper- strong on our tongues. Copper⌠Did I bite his lip? Whatever.
We breathed heavily, our pace passionate and needing but slow and sensual all at once. I wasnât physically capable of going too fast due to the alcohol, but I also wanted to enjoy the moment.
I wanted to dance, and I wanted to make out a little more.
Just as I mentally congratulated my drunken self, I heard the strong guitar strings at the start of one of my favorite AC/DC songs.
I pulled away, Pete- or, Frank- following me with his lips initially. His lips had started to swell up a little bit, and his bottom one had a tiny bit of blood on it.
I opened my mouth in excitement.
âI love this song!â
I pretended to strum the guitar in time with the intro- or at least, what I felt like was in time. He laughed at me, shaking his head and letting his hands fall to his sides as he watched me in my fake performance.
I began to sing along with the background chorus of the song:
âWalk all over youâ
As I ran my hands up his chest, moving back and forth. It felt so good and I was having so much fun. I sang the song, bringing my close half an inch from Frankâs face just to pull it away again when he started to lean in. He just sat there and stared with admiration in his eyes and a smile on his lips.
I finally got up, wanting to move my entire body.
I wanted to dance, and I wanted to make out a little more.

I fell to the ground, landing on my butt as the song came to an end. I was panting, Frank clapping from his spot on the floor. I smiled at him, crawling over and sitting right next to him. Another song came on, this one much slower than the last.
I closed my eyes, nodding along to the song and getting lost in the darkness behind my eyes.
Before long a thought popped into my head. One that I couldnât wrap my head around.
âHey,â I began, slowly opening my eyes and adjusting to the light before looking over at Frank. He was looking down at his lap before he lifted his own head, looking at me with his usual furrowed-brow expression.
I scooted towards him more, turning my body so I was facing him before continuing.
âHow did his guys find us earlier? Did they follow you from Leoâs place?â I asked, fiddling with my hands in worry. I searched his face for an answer.
He stared back at me as he thought, in confusion and concern.
âI wasnât followed after I left. They had all night to catch up to the motel.â He replied, seeming nonchalant.
I was incredibly confused. If they didnât follow him when he escaped, how were they able to find where we were the next day? There were hundreds of other places I couldâve gone, that we couldâve gone. Yet somehow, they knew. Knowing what the car looks like, I understand. He used that car to get us out of there I assumed, but the exact route we took? It was suspicious, but my mind started to hurt from how hard I was thinking about it. I also trusted his answer. He seemed certain that no one had followed them, so maybe it was just dumb luck that they found us. I brushed it off and decided to worry more about it later. For now, we were safe and away from them. Thatâs all that mattered.
I sighed loudly and dramatically, spinning around and laying down so my head was in his lap. I closed my eyes, feeling like I could fall asleep at that moment. Frank softly ran his hand along my arm.
âYou think heâll come after you?â He spoke low, almost in a whisper. I opened my eyes and looked at him. His expression was open, soft. I swallowed. Sitting up and propping myself on my arms, I looked at him over my shoulder.
âIâm surprised he hasnât already found us.â I whispered, my voice shaking- as if he could hear me. He looked at me with deep concern.
âWhyâs that?â
âHeâs a man that gets what he wants.â
I looked at him, in his eyes. I wasnât sure how much time he had spent in there, or even how much time I had spent in there- but I was a little confused on how he hadnât gotten to learn the extremes Leo would go to. When who he was, or what he owned, was threatened. I was grateful that he didnât know, and hoped he would never know. He could take care of himself, I knew that. Hell, heâd been my rock these past few days as I adjusted to no longer being a mob bossâ pin doll. He was tough, patient, and smart. Wary. Suspicious. Closed off.
I didnât mind it though, and I knew there was a reason behind it. One Iâd hope to find out about one day, as we learn more about each other. A part of me was surprised at how much had happened between us these past few hours. I could tell neither of us have ever done something like this, ever trusted someone so quickly as to comfortably drink and enjoy ourselves. It hadnât been that long since weâd known each other, but our circumstances were certainly different from most people. We were similar, but also different. We got along, and started to understand each other. What would happen tomorrow, or the days after that was something for sober, conscious me to worry about. I wanted to live in the moment for now.
After a couple minutes of silent contemplating from both of us, Frank reached his hand up to rub my arm, squeezing near my shoulder in reassurance.
I winced, pain shooting through my arm as he squeezed it. He dropped his hand, sitting up straighter to look at me apologetically. I looked up at him in confusion, opening my mouth to say something before I looked away, trying to remember something that was on the tip of my tongue. I ran a hand over my shoulder, feeling something like a scarred over cut. I looked at it, seeing the tiniest vertical stitches along my arm. I kept my hand over it, trying my hardest to remember something I felt I knew about the injury.
âDo it again.â I spoke suddenly, looking back up at Frank.
He looked at me with confusion, like he had heard me wrong. I nodded, holding out my arm. He looked into my eyes, slowly bringing his hand back up to wrap around my arm in the same place. He looked apprehensive before he squeezed it again. I felt the same pain in my arm, as well as some⌠thing underneath my skin.
âWhat the fuck?â I exclaimed to myself in frustration, closing my eyes to try and help the memory come to surface.
It came to me in an uncomfortable vividness.
I spit out blood, joining the other dried-up splatters of blood that had been there since my first day down here. My head was heavy as I struggled to keep it upright. My eyes drooped and fought to stay open. I felt so weak. I turned my head back to him as he crouched, looking at me in anger. I met his stare with disgust. He muttered something, grabbing my face with so much force I could taste more blood. My head shook with his hand.
âYou are mine.â He yelled, spitting the words at me as if he could say them enough times and they would become true. âYou will never get away from me.â
He brought a knife up to my face in promise. I just looked at him, feeling too weak to cry or talk, and much too weak to put up any fight. He laughed before showing a pitiful expression, holding my face with both hands.
âWe are meant to be together. Forever.â He said, dropping my head from his hands. My head fell, my chin against my chest as I started to succumb to the fatigue.
He mumbled something, and I tried to pick up my head, but to no avail. I was sinking further and further into unconsciousness.
Until I felt as if my arm had caught on fire. My head shot up as I thrashed against the restraints, screaming and crying in pain. I looked to the side, seeing Leo slicing a line down my arm. I panted and sobbed once, twice, three times-
Before I fell unconscious.
My eyes widened, looking at Frank horrified and with painful recollection.
âHe⌠no.â I shook my head, trying to convince myself that the idea was absurd. âHe put theâŚâ I trailed off.
âWhat? What happened?â Frank asked with increasing worry.
I muttered underneath my breath, repeating the memory out loud slowly to myself. I stood up abruptly, almost falling over but quickly regaining my balance. The alcoholâs effects started to wear off as the alarming sobriety of the situation kicked in. Frank stood up as well, standing in the same spot but watching me.
âWhat is it?â He asked again, insisting but uneasy.
I walked into the kitchen, grabbing a knife from the block on the counter. I walked back over to him, holding the knife in my hand. He looked down at the knife, then at me. He didnât show any fear or suspicion, just worry.
I looked into his eyes, sobering myself up so I could show on my face that I was serious. I hoped he would trust me and ask me about it afterwards, because I might not have the strength that I have now in a couple minutes. I spoke with as much confidence and assertion as I could muster in the moment.
âFrank... Iâm gonna need you to cut open my arm.â

The streets of Canto Bight were loud and lively as I walked on, following down the familiar road. Countless species crowded the city, celebrating and drinking as the sun set lower and lower. The street lights hung across the main road, lining the trees and nearby shops. I walked slowly, enjoying my time in the cool breeze of the city. My eyes gazed upon the people, wearing fabrics and colors of great multitude. Then I dragged my eyes back to him.
I was calm, enjoying my time on the streets Iâve grown to know so well. I was enjoying myself, much like all the others that surrounded me- spending their night drinking, dancing, gambling. However, unlike all these others, I was on a mission.
âFind him. Stop him. Donât let him catch on.â
That was all the information given, along with a holoprojector of what he looked like- which, really, was just a suit of armor. Mandalorian armor. I hadnât seen one of them since I was a baby, which I figured would make it easier- he stood out. That, and the fact I was never one to turn down a bounty. No matter how cryptic.
Almost all of the other bounty hunters had turned this one down, claiming it was âdangerousâ or a âgreat risk for so little reward.â In my eyes, enough credits to buy me a new ship and notching a Mandalorian bounty on my belt was plenty of a reward. As I watched the way the lights strung across the street reflected off of his new beskar armor, I had found yet another reward that would be reaped from this bounty.
Iâm gonna be rich.
I smiled underneath the cloth mask I had covering the lower part of my face, watching as he finally turned down the street that led straight to the most notorious half-casino, half-club in all of Cantonica. There we go.
I didnât bother to look both ways before darting across the main street, down an alley a couple blocks from the club. When I passed the threshold where the light from the street ended and the darkness of the alley began, I pulled down my mask to breathe better. I used the brick wall to jump off of, throwing my hands out to the top of the tall fence separating the rest of the alley from the dumpsters for the casino. I pulled myself over, landing on my feet silently. I stood up slowly, looking both ways to see that I was alone.
I made quick work of taking off my cloak, folding it before putting it in an old and empty barrel in the corner. I took off my staple utility belt, grabbing my favorite knife out of it before joining it with my cloak in the barrel. I looked down at my clothes, trying to decide where to hide the knife. I wore a purple two piece outfit which exposed parts of my chest and the entirety of my stomach. The top rose to wrap around my neck, acting as a choker. I had a belt hanging loosely on my waist, tilted to one side. I had black bracers on to match the color of my belt, also serving as protection against the supposed âdangersâ of this bounty. My shoes rose up to my mid-thigh, skin tight and lined in laces tying up and around my leg.
I put the knife in the top of my shoe, which I could touch comfortingly with the tips of my fingers. I found the top of the barrel and put it on to hide my belongings. I managed to change in less than thirty seconds, checking my reflection in a dirty puddle on the ground before turning around and pulling open the door. Only it didnât budge. I yanked on the handle, fiddling with it and pulling it as hard as I could. Still, nothing.
âShit.â I sighed, looking around the ground for anything that could help me.
I was looking carefully around when I heard the lock being unlocked from the other side. I raced to gain composure, feigning the persona of a regular worker. The door flung open, the music flooding into the cold and still air.
I turned around, exhaling tabac.
âTook âya long enough.â I said, flicking the joint into the darkness of the alley. I walked over to the Twiâlek holding a tray of drinks who had been unlucky enough to have heard me. I walked over to the door, holding it open and looking at her with a smile. She looked at me with confusion, trying to recognize me. I smiled harder, waiting.
I only waited a couple seconds before I got bored. I held a hand up to her head, feeling the force around it and manipulating it with all my strength. She fell, unconscious, to the concrete outside. I took the tray from her hands just before it tipped, making sure all the drinks were intact. I used the back of my hand to wipe the sweat from my head.
It's been a while since Iâve used the force. I donât really like to show it off.
âThanks, sweetheart.â I whispered, walking past the door and closing it softly. I turned around to see a brightly lit room, with windows looking into the kitchen.
I must already be a little off schedule, so I have to go.
I speed-walked through the kitchen, past all the employees who didnât so much as spare me a glance. I held my head high, walking with a purpose.
I pushed open the doors, finally making it into the main hub of the room.
The lights were dimmed, barely illuminating the shadows of the hundreds of people littered throughout the room. The music blared, women dancing on the stages wearing similar outfits to mine. People were on the couches, enjoying the show or on top of one another, hands exploring and oblivious to the fact other people were next to them. Some were against walls, against the stage. They were everywhere. There were booths in the back, where people sat and drank. A huge dance floor, so crowded I sent a silent prayer to the universe that the Mandalorian was not somewhere in that mess. I walked past the dance floor, glancing over at the bar when I heard the doors open before I saw them.
A few people around me stopped mid conversation or dance, looking over at the doors in worry and shock. I stood by the bar, handing a drink to a random customer as I watched him enter the establishment. The disco lights bounced off his armor, making his presence known to anyone within a mile radius. Another worker- or at least I assumed she was based off of how similar our outfits were- noticed the hunter as well and immediately straightened up to walk over to him.
I shoved the drinks in the customers hand, leaving mid conversation to walk over to the light pink Togruta, giving her the tray. I spoke as she opened her mouth to protest.
âBossâ orders. Head to the back for refills.â I said sternly, giving her a look that dared her to question my authority. She sighed, heading towards the kitchen. I leaned against the bar, watching him continue to look around. I stood near the edge of the bar, turning my body towards the droid that served as a bartender.
I looked up at the menu, seeing hundreds of different drinks in several different languages⌠and their credits. I looked next to me, at the couple who seemed really into their conversation and only an inch or two away from pouncing on each other in their bar stools. I snaked my hand out, grabbing one of their untouched drinks and sliding it over in front of me. I took a sip, surprised at the sweet and fruity flavor that I tasted. I downed it in one gulp, putting the drink right back where I found it- now empty.
Staring at him from the bar, I found myself intrigued. He had a nice build, and stood with confidence that was unwavering- despite getting dirty looks from almost everyone in the room. It would be intimidating to anyone else. To me, it was attractive. Why not play with my bounty a little?
I straightened my back, which was exposed because of the outfit I wore. I put my shoulders back, letting a quick breath out before sauntering over to the Mandalorian bounty hunter.
I snapped into yet another character, my eyes lidded and my lips turning up in a smirk. It took a second for him to look in my direction, until I emerged from the crowd a few feet away. I smiled, looking straight into his visor where his eyes were. He stood still and straight, following me with his helmet. I walked around him, trailing my arms around his shoulders.
âHey there, stranger. Long way from home?â I asked seductively, running my hands down the length of his armor-clad arms. I looked him up and down, tilting my head in curiosity. He was tall. A little bigger than he looked from my previous angle, but nothing I had to worry about. Iâd taken down much bigger species.
His helmet showed my reflection, which I stared at to make it easier for me to show attraction. He remained silent, and still. I went in closer, bringing my mouth to the side of his helmet.
âLetâs go somewhere more private.â I said, just loud enough for him to hear me. I took his hand, not waiting or caring for an answer. I pushed my way through the crowd, until eventually everyone started parting ways. I heard whispers from all around me.
âIs that a Mandalorian?â
âWhatâs he doing here?â
âShit, I might have a bounty on me.â
â-You wouldnât be worth any credits.â
I smirked all the way, holding onto the Mandalorians hand with a firm grasp. I walked to the back, where they had private dance rooms. I opened the curtains, holding them open for him to walk in first. He stopped where I had let go of his hand- right at the front of the curtain. I waited, watching him with a smile on my face. He only stopped for a second before slowly walking into the room illuminated by a red light.
I closed the curtains behind me, making sure no part of the room was visible from the outside.
I turned around, where he was still standing. Towering over me. I put a hand on his chest, walking him backwards until the back of his legs hit the sofa. He sat on the sofa tentatively, trying not to mess up any of his armor.
I gave him a soft smile, starting to sway to the music that was a little less invasive here, but just loud enough to give me a strong urge to dance. I swayed back and forth, stretching my arms up and out before running them down my body. The Mandalorian sat on the couch, leaning back into it and spreading his legs wider.
I continued to dance, turning around in circles before swaying low to the ground and coming back up.
He still hadnât said a word, which was both suspicious and surprising. For someone who was here for a bounty himself, there was a tiny part of me that was surprised he had followed me back here in the first place. On the other hand, I didnât blame him.
I still needed to decide how exactly I was going to do this. I was never one for any plans. I was more of a wing-it type of bounty hunter, and that usually worked. I had already gone far enough to plan my outfit and how to get into this place, so I might as well have some fun and just follow my gut.
I turned around to face him once again, seeing he was in the same position. I might have thought there was no one underneath this hunk of metal if it wasnât for the subtle fidgeting of his feet every so often. Even then, most people wouldnât be able to see his fidgeting at all. I had mastered the art of analyzing people, and that art helps to remind me that there was, in fact, a person underneath that armor. A man underneath that armor. I planned to exploit this fact.
I slowed down my dancing until I came to a near stop, closing the distance between us. I picked my leg up and over the Mandalorian, straddling the big pieces of beskar covering his thighs. He put the hand that was over the edge of the couch down by his side as I wrapped my arms around his neck.
I was getting restless of the games, of the silence. I wanted a little more fight, a little more fun.
I also wanted to hear his voice. The curiosity was killing me. I leaned next to his helmet, whispering.
âWhat big, bad bounty brings someone like you out here?â
I pulled away from his ear, studying his helmet. He moved it to the side, as if he was analyzing me. I waited for a response, but it never came. Instead, he brought his hands up abruptly from his side and put them on the back of my waist.
âNot the talking type, okay. Iâm into it. That kinda stuff is gonna cost âya, though.â I said, bringing my hands down to pull his own away from my waist. As they came into view, I heard the click of a blaster.
I looked down, staring at the blaster that was pointed straight at my stomach.
âMore than this?â The Mandalorians' modulated voice gruffed out, pulling out a tracking fob with his other hand. The light was blinking rapidly as he held it towards me, but was silent.
His voice was rough and gravelly, and I could tell he hardly ever used it. I standed correct in my assumptions about him, but I found myself falling short on seeing this one coming.
I froze in place, staring between the blaster and the tracking fob. My mind was racing. Why was he after me? Which one of my crimes did they finally decide to get me for? The most important question, however, found itself out of my mouth.
âHow much?â I asked, looking back up at his helmet. He was silent for a second, unmoving. I could tell he didnât expect this reaction out of me. He half looked like he was ready to jump up at any moment and chase me out of the club. The other half looked ready to shoot the blaster right that moment. If those were my only two options, Iâd hope he was ready to run. Only, I was no runner.
â2,000 credits.â He replied shortly, his blaster still poking into my stomach. My face acted on its own accord, twisting into a pleased expression.
âWow. Really?â I asked, slumping into his lap in relaxation. I pretended to be deep in thought, shaking my head with a smile on my face. âThatâs way more than theyâre giving me for you. Double, actually.â
As the words left my mouth his body went rigid. All movement ceased, and at that moment he really did look as if he was just a suit of armor. I understood how other people must feel all the time.
I took this moment to start the fun. I raised my thigh up quickly, hitting the blaster out of his hand and across the room. It happened so fast he didnât know what was happening until I unsheathed the knife from my shoe. I brought it up, going for his chest before his arm came up and grabbed my forearm, stopping the knife just inches from the space in his neck not covered by beskar. I used my other hand to push the knife father, coming so close to piercing the skin I could almost taste it.
His other arm came up, wrapping around my throat and pinning me to the couch. He stood up on his knees to hold me down, trying to move his head farther back from the knife while at the same time keep his hands on my neck. I grit my teeth, breathing out rapidly as the air constricted in my throat.
He knocked the knife out of my hand, throwing it somewhere in the room that wasnât visible to me. I started to claw at his hands, trying to ease up his grip. It wasnât enough to kill me, but it certainly wasnât pleasant and I could feel the fog of unconsciousness slowly ease its way into my brain.
I stopped trying to claw at his hands, instead using one of them to start to push the bottom of his helmet up. Either he figures Iâll forget his face and itâs worth knocking me unconscious over following his religion, or he lets up to pull his helmet back down.
His hands remained on my neck as I pushed the helmet up further and further, revealing bits of him little by little.
First his neck, which had short, chocolate brown stubble that got longer the more that was revealed. Then his chin, then his lips. They were pursued in concentration, teeth gritted in frustration as I was determined to knock it off of his head. Finally, just before it got to his nose, he let up one hand to pull it back down. That was enough for me.
I wrapped my legs around him, flipping us over and onto the floor. He landed on the floor with a grunt, his helmet secured back on his head. I clasped my hands together, raising them over my head as far as they could go before bringing it down with as much force as I could into his stomach. He groaned loudly in pain, leaning up and wrapping his hands around his stomach. He breathed in and out as hard as he could, trying to recover from having the wind knocked from him.
I crawled over him, towards the blaster that lay in the corner. The music continued to blast outside the room, the red light somehow adding to the stress of the situation and making it more erotic all at once. My fingertips grazed the blaster before I felt a hand wrap around my ankle, yanking me back towards him. I slid backwards a few inches before I looked back, kicking his shoulder. His grip loosened and I crawled towards the blaster again, finally grabbing it. I held it with both my hands, spinning around so that I was laying on the ground but the upper half of my body was up. I aimed it at the Mandalorian, trying to catch my breath. He was on his stomach, hoisting himself up by his forearms as his helmet stared at me. I could hear his modulated panting as he dropped his head, in surrender or preparation I wasnât sure.
My mind raced with a thousand thoughts as I lay there, blaster aimed right at the top of the helmet. My finger grazed the trigger, just a subtle movement away from pulling it.
I didnât want to shoot him like this, in a club surrounded by thousands of people, and I wasnât going to. I just needed to think. I didnât want to shoot him at all. I hadnât planned on killing anyone tonight. I just wanted to bring him in. I was given the instructions, and I was going to follow them. Loosely. Even if I was ordered to kill him, I didnât think I could do it. Laying here, with the trigger so easily in reach, I felt my stomach resting in my ankles at the possibility that the Mandalorian would try to attack me again, forcing me to use this. I wasnât going to let this show in my face or posture, though, as I kept it trained on him.
I was panting, my throat bruised and hurting. This was always an outcome of a good night, in my opinion. I did have fun. This is what I had expected would happen, walking into this club tonight. I also just didnât think I would get this far.
I couldnât bring him back with me. Itâd be too much work, and I didnât know who I could trust with my bounty out there like that. The journey back would be difficult, and not worth the credits promised for him. On the other hand, I couldnât just let him go. I put in this much effort, so why stop here, when things had just started to get good?
I spent a couple more moments gathering my thoughts. I decided I would just do what I do best: Get into some trouble.
I stood up, staring at the Mandalorian that lay on the floor, still panting. He looked defeated, his hands on his stomach and his back uncomfortably straight.
âGet up.â I commanded, my voice breaking. It came out a little harsher than intended, but I didnât mind. The guy almost choked me unconscious- so I could play bad cop for a little while. He let out a sigh, sitting up before slowly standing. He turned around, facing me with only one hand on his stomach now.
I walked closer to him, blaster pointed at the section of his body not guarded by armor.
âHereâs the plan, Mandalorian. Youâre gonna walk outta here first. Iâm gonna be right behind you, telling you where to go. This blasterâs gonna be at your back. You try anything funny, and I wonât hesitate on ruining the night of everyone out on that dance floor.â I spoke gruffly, walking behind him.
I hid my arm underneath his black cape that wrapped around his neck, putting the barrel of the blaster right against his back. The warmth of his back was weirdly soothing in reminding me that this was a person. It brought me back down to myself, prompting me to tone down on the intimidation.
I nudged him with the blaster, pretending as if I wrapped an arm around his waist. I walked behind him at his side.
âGo.â
He walked, at a pace between fast and slow where I was able to keep up with him without anyone being suspicious. There seemed to be even more people here than before as it got later and later into the night. We went around the dance floor, not having the patience or the time to push through everyone who was way too drunk to even notice any weird behavior from us.
I led him past the dance floor and the bar. I spared a glance away from the doors, looking around at the people surrounding us. None of them paid any mind to us now, aside from the nervous side glances of those who werenât yet drunk. I looked at the abandoned drinks on the bar, half tempted to go steal another one before leaving. This distraction proved to be ill-timed as the Mandalorians elbow suddenly came back, hitting me in the exact same place in my throat that he had choked me earlier.
I coughed roughly, feeling like I was choking all over again in pain. He twisted my arm, grabbing the blaster from my hands and switching our positions. I was too distracted and he was too quick for me to fight back, along with the fact that I didnât feel like fighting off any other drunks who felt in the mood for a brawl. He put an arm on my back, pretending as if he was concerned over my choking to others. The other held the blaster against my waist underneath the cloak.
âKeep walking.â He gruffed out, loud enough to be heard over the music. His voice vibrated through me, and I did nothing but keep a tentative hand on my throat and continue walking.
We walked through the doors of the club, the cold Canto Bight breeze welcoming me back outside by biting at my nose and cheeks. I swallowed, feeling the pain in my throat. I nudged against the Mandalorian a little harder than needed at the reminder of my incoming bruising. Never really been a fan of turtlenecks.
He simply held me still, leading me away from the people who littered the streets and sidewalk outside the club. It was only when we were in another dark alley that he let me go. The music was still heard from here, low and far enough to not block out the sounds of our panting.
I walked forward, leaning against the brick wall as he stood a few feet away from me, the blaster still lazily pointed at me as he caught his breath.
âSo, this is awkward.â I spoke, my voice still rough from the damage to my vocal chords. He stayed still, staring at me behind his helmet. I let out a breathy laugh, looking up at the stars.
âYou tell me who you sent you, and Iâll tell you who sent me. Deal?â I asked, bringing my hand up to shake his own. I looked towards him, watching him walk closer to me. I followed him, looking straight through the helmet and into where I knew his eyes would be.
âWho gave you the bounty?â He asked, stern and without any hint of playfulness behind his tone. So much for lightening the mood.
âListen, buddy. Iâm sure youâre a great guy-â
âWho. Gave you. The bounty.â He repeated, cutting me off and bringing the blaster up to my chest. Iâd be lying if I said our entire interaction wasnât turning me on. I stared down at the blaster, then back up at him.
I could tell him who sent me, but then that would probably come back to bite me in the ass one way or another. It wouldnât be that big of a deal to have a few more problems added to my plate, but no one likes unnecessary ones. Especially ones that were no fun. This would only bring stress.
I stayed silent, staring at him. A few moments passed of our silence before I made a feeble attempt at escaping. I kicked him in the crotch, making a run for down the alley. He folded over in pain, the blaster lowering for a second. I only made it a few feet before his hand caught my shoulder, slamming me into the wall again.
My mouth fell open as I moaned in pain, the back of my head sending a wave of shock through the rest of my body. He flipped me around, my face against the wall as he spread my legs with his own. He started to pat me down, looking for any more weapons that I could have been hiding.
To his pleasant surprise, I had been cocky enough to just bring the one knife.
He crouched down, patting down the lengths of my legs- even the parts that werenât covered in fabric.
âYou sure are handsy, arenât you, Mandalorian?â I asked him, turning my head so he could hear me. My hands were behind my back as he held them in one of his own. âCan I call you Mando?â
He didnât fall for my antics, remaining silent as he sighed and finished checking me for weapons. He stood back up, still holding my hands still.
âIâm all for some rough foreplay, but this is getting a little lengthy, isnât it?â I asked, turning to look at him. He scooted closer to me, putting his body against mine in what was meant as a warning.
âShut up.â He spoke, right next to my ear. His voice was strained and annoyed, but I knew it wasnât towards me. It was towards himself, and the reactions he was having for me. The reactions heâd been having all night.
âI know thatâs not a blaster in your pants, Mando.â I whispered out, smirking.
âShut. Up.â He backed away from me, dropping my hands. I turned around, my back to the wall as I looked at him in curiosity. He was loosely holding onto the blaster now, not even a forethought towards any possible necessity of the item.
I could take this chance to disarm him, make a run for it. Possibly even kill him, capture him. Take him back to the hunters, collect my long-awaited bounty. Buy a ship. Travel.
OrâŚ
I could stay here, have a little more fun with the intriguing man that stood in front of me. Then collect the bounty afterwards, when heâs really not expecting it.
Iâd made up my mind as soon as I thought the words.
âCome on, donât act like you havenât been thinking about it since you saw me in that club.â I said, walking over to him and draping an arm over his shoulder. He was as still as a statue, only his finger twitching- releasing the trigger of the blaster and putting it in the back of his pants. I smiled, biting my lip and running my other hand along his arm.
âWhy else would you have let me dance for you?â I whispered, running both my hands down the length of his arms and guiding them to my waist. I dropped my hands, feeling his hands stay in the same spot I put them. He grabbed the flesh of my waist lightly, moving in closer to me. I smirked, moving us backwards until I was against the wall once more.
âWhoâŚâ He mumbled, trailing off as my hands tugged on his belt, pulling him against me.
âWhat was that?â I asked, bringing a leg up to wrap around his waist, pushing his butt towards me. The lower half of his body leaned against mine, when I felt his bulge against my stomach.
âWho- who sent you?â He asked, as if it was forced out of him. As if he was trying hard to stay focused on the mission he came here for, but was failing. I laughed lightly, unbuckling his belt and letting it fall to the ground.
âCâmon, Mando. Donât you want to focus on right now, here, with me?â I asked, unbuttoning his pants. His eyes fell down to his pants, wanting to watch me. I took a hand off his pants, using it to push the bottom of his helmet up so he was looking at me.
âAnswer me.â I said, looking into his visor expectantly. âDonât you want to focus on right now? I can feel how badly you want me.â I spoke, grinding against him. He let out a shaky breath, his hand going out to brace himself on the wall, caging me into him.
âNeed to know who sent you.â He strained, his voice betraying him in what he really wanted. I let up, taking both of my hands, which were messing with the band of his pants, off of him. I clasped them together behind my back, looking up at him with an irritated expression.
He was hard against my stomach, yet he still fought for the information. My mind went back to my earlier motives, observing him with his undone pants and the way he had let his guard almost completely down.
âWhy donâtâŚâ I began, running one hand down his chest as his helmet watched me with all of his attention. â...you tell me who sent you?â I finished, bringing the blaster to his neck once more.
He breathed out with frustration, obviously fed up with our back and forth games. I, for one, was enjoying myself. He pulled his helmet away from me, looking at the ground. Contemplating.
I could tell I was close. I was so close to getting the information out of him, I held my breath.
I needed to know who was after me. I needed to know who to avoid, what planet to steer clear of. I canât have anyone having a leg up on me. I needed to know who I was dealing with.
âJust tell me who sent you, and we can get to the fun part.â I whispered, teasing him. I was pushing my limits, I know, but I was also the one with the blaster in my hand. He picked his head back up to look at me.
âThe guild sent me. Said I was the only one fit for the job.â He said, relaxing a little bit more than he was a couple moments ago. I slowly brought the weapon down, thinking about what he said.
The guild. Only one fit for the job. One part of me was flattered, sure. Having a bounty hunter specifically picked for me because others werenât cut out for it. The other part, however, was extremely suspicious- even though I knew he was telling the truth. Why would a specific person be sent to kill me, after Iâve committed almost every crime known to the galaxy? Theyâd have a greater chance at getting me by making it a known bounty. Another issue was- Iâm in the guild. Iâd been in it for a few years, and I thought Iâd known of mostly everyone else in it. Thereâs only two leaders, so that meansâŚ
He knocked the weapon out of my hand completely, sending it flying across the alley. Only, he didnât chase after it. He remained where he was, caging me in with his arm. Interrupting my thoughts. Waiting.
âOh yeah, no. This isnât like a you-tell-me-I-tell-you situation. Thanks for the info, Iâll see you around.â I spoke, patting his arm and walking under it, challenging him. Once again, I felt his hand catch my shoulder. I turned around, instantly throwing a punch. He stopped it just before contact, looking up at me frantically before I brought my other hand towards him. I landed the punch, getting a huff of pain from him as he jumped back.
Then we were at it again.
I threw punch after punch, some landing and some just barely missing him as he fought to dodge or interrupt them. He was confused, staggering for a moment before he saw the determination on my face. Then he started throwing his own punches, trying to counter all of my own. I dodged them, blocking them with my hand or ducking. We fell into a rhythm, one that wasnât particularly violent or bloodthirsty, but incessant.
I wasnât even sure why I was fighting him. I had made up my mind that I didnât want to go through the trouble of turning him in for the bounty, and he had finally given up the information Iâd wanted. I was also way too horny to want to leave without finishing what we started.
Maybe I just wanted to keep him on his toes.
Or maybe I didnât want to tell him where I had gotten my bounty from.
Weâd known each other for an hour or two and I already had thoughts of protecting him.
That was worth starting another fight over. Even if it was just an act of suppressing that awareness. He had obviously thought the same, or else he wouldnât have told me the information.
This thought had me faltering in my moves, disrupting the momentum we had going on. He shoved me against the wall again, pinning me by my shoulder.
âI gotta say, youâre really making me enjoy this wall.â I retorted sarcastically, moving against his hold in discomfort.
âIf you donât tell me who gave you the bounty, Iâll have to bring you in.â He warned. He was closer to me, as if he was whispering to me a secret. As if there were people around that could hear him, sparing me from collecting his reward.
âYeah, Iâm not going in. And you donât wanna know who gave it to me, trust me.â
He took a breath, like he was almost pushed to his breaking point. Like he was fighting the urge to snap and throw me over his shoulder, taking me away to whatever planet his little guild was on.
âI can bring you in warm, or I can bring you in cold.â He grunted in warning. I paused, thinking on the line. Would he really kill me over this? Was that how important it was to him?
âThatâs cute. You use that line on all the women bounties youâre insanely attracted to?â I tested, wanting to see him fall off that ledge and give in to the anger I knew was stirring in him. His patience had been thin since those doors to the club had opened, and I could tell based on the first look I got at him. He was tired, and not very patient. So, the fact Iâd made it this far, and was still alive, told me the great lengths to which my charm lay.
âJust you.â He responded, his voice softer than before. My cheeks warmed and for the first time tonight, butterflies stirred in my stomach from softness, not lust. His hold on my shoulder loosened, allowing me to break free and walk away if I wanted to. If I wanted to.
I stayed in my spot against the wall, silent. Waiting. Unlike him, I was patient. I would wait for much, much longer to see him break.
Only it didnât take much longer.
He let go of shoulder, crouching down so he fell out of my peripheral vision. I moved to turn and look at him, but his hand came up and pushed me back against the wall, letting me know he wanted me to stay still. I obliged, staying against the wall as I felt his hands roam the lower half of my body. Starting at the top of my shorts, down my legs and to my ankles. He brought one hand up to my shorts, starting to pull them down slowly. The other hand snaked back up my leg and stopped on the inside of my thigh, right next to where I needed him most.
I breathed heavily, trying not to make too much noise as he continued to pull down my shorts at a slow pace. His hand massaged my inner thigh, going up until his fingertips just touched the wetness that started to spread across my thighs. He finally pulled down my shorts, revealing my underwear to the cold and biting air.
That served as a reminder that we were, in fact, outside and in an alley. Though, the thought of someone walking by and seeing us only sparked me to keep going.
âMando, please.â I breathed, getting tired of the teasing. I had been wet since the moment I brought him back into that room. My own patience, which I thought had been endless, had very quickly found its end.
âTell me who sent you.â He said, beginning to massage my ass with his hands, the rough texture of his gloves making me writhe against the wall.
âI⌠IâŚâ I began, my voice fading off as his hand cupped me, still and waiting for me to say the words. He held still, stopping all of his actions. I arched my ass back into his touch, which caused him to continue massaging me, but his other hand stayed still.
âCâmon, pretty girl. Say it.â He whispered, putting the lightest of pressure on my clit. My mouth opened, my hands trying to hold onto the brick wall as my eyebrows raised in pleasure. The nickname made my toes curl, and I was waiting for the satisfaction that came with some stimulation, but it never came. His touch was so light it didnât fulfill the need I had, and it frustrated me even more. Tears sprang to my eyes as my hands turned to fists against the wall.
What did he even ask me? Oh, right.
I fought to remember anything outside his touches, which remained at the same pressure and speed. My body was shaking, not knowing what to do with so little stimulation. I tried my hardest to remember what he asked me, and why I was keeping it from him in the first place. I would tell him the second I remembered, no matter what it was. No matter what consequences followed.
His hand came to my side to hold me still, the other one applying the faintest bit of added pressure to my clit. My body physically sighed and inhaled sharply all at once.
âKarga. Greef Karga.â I breathed out, not thinking before the words spilled out of me.
My earlier suspicions were confirmed by his reaction, his body freezing up. Either Mando had plenty of other enemies who wanted him dead and Karga wasnât much of a threat, orâŚ
âWhat, thought Karga was a friend?â I sighed, panting as I turned to look at his visor. âHe doesnât have friends.â
I stared at him as he remained still on the ground, his pants still unbuttoned and both of his hands on me. A tiny bit of my patience was given back to me as I sympathized with his reaction. I thought I had been a good friend to Karga too, but we had both been given to each other for slaughter- Karga didnât care about who lived or who didnât. He would have just given the bounty away to another, until we were both dead. Or in his capture.
I didnât have time to ask if he was okay, or beg for him to keep going, before I heard multiple ships fly overhead from hyperspace.
Mando and I both followed them with our eyes, watching them fly towards the club- where we heard glass begin breaking, followed by screams.
âShit.â I spoke, both of us jumping into action. Frustration flowed through my veins at being disrupted, but worry did as well. Karga was important, and had connections. If that was his people, this night would be taking a much more serious turn. I tried to mentally prepare myself for what lay ahead.
Mandoâs hands flew off of me, the cold filling in the warmth heâd created against my body. We both made quick work of putting our clothes back on, buttoning and tying everything that needed to be.
I handed him his belt, clipping it back into place. He was quiet, staring at me from behind his visor and quietly catching his breath. I stared back at him, unsure of what to say.
He finally brought up his hand, caressing my cheek with it in silent promise. A promise that weâd finish what we started. A promise that this meant something to him, and we would find each other again.
I smiled at him, leaning into his hand and sighing in both satisfaction and frustration. We both waited for one of us to make the first move and be the one to leave. We didnât want to leave the safety of this dirty alley weâd found. I decided Iâd break the silence, wanting to get it over with quickly. I had a long night ahead of me.

âThat motherfucker!â
I stared in disbelief at the screen, the voice of the news broadcaster hitting deaf ears. It sounded like background noise as I couldnât tear my eyes away from the screen. I saw Pete moving from the corner of my eye, his voice bringing my focus back.
âWhat?â I asked, turning my head towards his direction. My eyes didnât follow, continuing to stay on the screen. At this point the news had completely moved on, now talking about the weather. I still couldnât look away. My attention still wavered.
â- police?â He said, looking at me. He waited for an answer. I didnât hear the question, and I didnât hear anything after. My mind was occupied.
What is happening? Why am I on the tv? What did he even say I did? I shouldâve paid attention, now I donât even know the crimes Iâm supposed to have committed. How did the bastard even get me on the news? A picture and my name. Iâm fucked. This means heâs getting desperate. If he sees me again, he will kill me. Iâm sure of it.
My heart raced.
This is a low fucking blow. He even brought the guy- or I guess, Pete, with me. Shit. We are screwed. I should just turn myself in. I donât have anywhere to go anyways, I should just-
âHey.â He said, standing in front of the tv to break my gaze. My eyes shot up to his. I was panting, my heart beating out of my chest. My eyes watered as I looked up at him. I rapidly blinked to prevent the tears from coming out. Iâm sure someone like him didnât want to haul around a partner that was so emotional. This was all new to me. I canât remember the last time I stepped outside that house, let alone without Leo right next to me.
âSorry.â I mumbled, breaking our stare and looking at the ground. I shook my head, putting my hands in my lap to hide the shaking.
âWhyâd he go to the police?â He asked, crossing his arms across his chest. I brought my head up, meeting his eyes once again.
âHeâs desperate.â I said, my mouth parting to try and breathe slower. I leaned back against the bed, propping myself up with my hands.
âHe wants you back with him.â He said matter-of-factly. His eyes narrowed, gauging my reaction.
My face heated, my heart slowing down. I looked down at my lap. I hated the taught reaction my body had to him- to that sentence. He wants you back. With him. Back at home. Where you belong.
âI know too much.â I said, bringing my hands back to my lap to mess with them as I spoke. I couldnât sit still. I needed to go, go, go. âI know everything about him. What heâs done, what he plans to do. Who he is, who doesnât like him.â I looked back up at him. âEverything.â
He didnât say anything, standing completely still as he continued to stare at me. I kept eye contact, trying to read what he was thinking. I was scared heâd change his mind about saving me, and throw me out. Throw me back out into the street, where anyone who watches the news will be waiting to rat me out. Then Iâd end up right back into Leoâs hands.
The thought made my entire body break out in goosebumps. I rubbed my arms and stood up, pacing in front of the bed.
âShit.â I whispered, my hands going everywhere. My arms, my hair, my waist. We were too vulnerable now. I was too vulnerable. Cops could be on their way over here right now, someone couldâve seen us walk in. They could be waiting right outside the door. What was I thinking, running away from Leo? I could never leave him. Heâd always find me. I knew him, but he knew me too. He knows me. He knows me.
âHey. Sit down.â He finally spoke, snapping me out of my spiraling thoughts. I nodded profusely, sitting down instantly. I looked up at him in expectation, my knee bouncing up and down. He had to have a plan. I looked at him, at his unchanging expression. He didnât seem affected by it at all. Then again, they didnât even have a picture of him, but still. Anyone with me was a target. Though, that seemed to not bother him at all.
He must be a professional. That has to be it. Heâs a professional, and he has a plan. Thereâs no need to worry. Thatâs why he let me have my little moment, and thatâs why he told me to sit down. He was gonna tell me he has a plan, and that no one is going to get caught.
I waited in silence for him to speak. He just stared at me. At my knee that wouldnât stop bouncing.
He finally looked away, looking around the room quickly before uncrossing his arms and leaning against the dresser that the tv sat on.
âWe should probably get some rest.â He gruffed out, meeting my eyes again.
⌠Was that it?
âGet some rest⌠â
What the fuck?
ââGet some rest?â What the fuck do you mean get-â
-
I lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling in annoyance. I let out a dramatic sigh, though I knew it wouldnât get any reaction out of him. His back was to me as he laid in the bed closest to the door.
This was such a dumb idea. Go to bed, when the police could be on their way over here right now. Or Leo.
That thought made me glance towards the door. A shadow passed by the window, walking past the motel. My heart raced with panic. I sat up, looking towards Pete. He didnât move. Probably asleep. Or sane, and knowing that we are fine right now. The room was dark, the only light source being the streetlight outside of the room. The shadow didnât return, and I didnât hear any more noise. I closed my eyes and dropped back onto the bed.
Weâre fine right now. No one is coming. Leoâs right here with me, Iâm safe with him.
My eyes snapped open, the smile that formed on my mouth disappearing. Pete. Peteâs here with me. Not Leo.
I closed my eyes tightly, a tear slipping out against my will. I wiped it immediately, silently reminding myself of the personal vow I made to stop crying. I turned my back to the door, bringing my hands up to lay my head on them. Maybe resting was a good idea. Sleep, and then weâll leave here. And be safe.
Iâll be safeâŚ
âWho did you tell?â He asked calmly, putting gloves on. I thrashed against the ropes, making the friction burn me. I didnât care. The pain was numbing. I couldnât feel anything, my heart was beating so hard. I was surprised I could still talk with how scared I was.
âWhat are you talking about? Tell about what?â I asked hurriedly, continuing to thrash against the chair.
âDonât fucking play dumb!â He yelled, slamming a hand against the table that sat in front of him. The table with weapons covering every inch of the surface. I flinched, my head shooting down to block my face as my eyes shut tightly. I waited, waiting for the hit. It never came.
I opened my eyes and looked back up, to him looking at all the weapons. A hand reached out, hovering over each weapon in thought.
âWhoâd you rat me out to?â He asked, picking up a tiny knife.
I started crying, tears flowing down my face as I kept moving against the unforgiving ropes.
âI didnât rat you out, Leo. I have no idea what youâre talking about. I promise, I promise.â I insisted, thrashing harder against the ropes as he started to walk closer to me. I could feel the ropes cutting through my skin.
âPlease, please⌠please, please, pleaseâŚâ I begged.  I didnât know what I was begging for. For him to stop. For him to forgive me. For some higher being to bring me back to the moment I reserved my spot in this chair. For things to go back to what they were.
He grabbed my face, forcing me to look up at him. I stopped moving, looking at his face. He looked down at me with sadness. I tried to blink away my tears, convinced I was seeing things.
âDonât cry. Câmon, donât cry.â He said, lowering himself so he was crouched in front of me. He was eye level with me, using the thumb of the hand he grabbed my face with to wipe the tears away. I cried harder, my heart warming slightly at watching his face fill with concern as he wiped the tears.
âTell me who you told.â He whispered, continuing to rub my face.
I cried harder, shaking my head and trying to move it from his grasp. It was unrelenting, unforgiving. He tightened his grip, forcing me to look up at him. My jaw hurt, feeling like it was seconds away from breaking underneath his hold.
âLeo, please⌠I didnât. I didnât tell-â I began, speaking through sobs.
He turned my face away from his, like he couldnât bear to look at me anymore. I felt the knife penetrate the skin of my thigh, sinking deeper and deeper. I screamed, trying to move away from him. It just made the cut deeper. It stung and burned, like he was trying to pull my heart out from the flesh of my leg. I screamed and screamed.
âYouâre making me do this.â
My eyes shot open as I sat up immediately. My hands went to my thigh, trying to block the knife. I stopped, seeing the darkness of the motel room. I turned to my left, seeing Pete in the same position- with his back to me. He was still asleep. I was grateful I didnât wake him up. It wouldâve been embarrassing if I did.
I looked back down at my thigh, seeing the scarring of the cut that I dreamt about. Or, rather, the memory I decided to relive.
I dropped back against the bed, panting as I tried to catch my breath. I let my arms drop to the sides, holding onto the bed. Iâm here. In the motel. Safe.
My forehead lined with sweat as my heartbeat still raced in my chest. I wanted to cry. Out of frustration, out of anger.
I hated how much time I spent thinking about him. How even when I wasnât thinking of him, I really was. I hated how much of my life he intruded on. He canât even leave me alone in my dreams.
I didnât want to cry. I refused to let myself cry again. I felt so drained, mentally and physically. My body felt heavy against the bed. I wanted to let myself sink into the mattress, falling into a nothingness forever.
I needed to do something. I couldnât let him take over my life. I got this second chance, I needed to use it. What I needed to use it for- I could figure out later.
I sat up, looking around the motel. There was still an hour or two before the sun completely revealed itself, and Pete was as still as a statue. He hadnât moved an inch out of the position heâd been in last night. Another thing he must be used to- getting sleep wherever he can get it.
One of the many other things that were currently bothering me was how little I knew about the man next to me. I wasnât lying earlier, Leo did tell me everything, but Pete must've come in after I got into my⌠predicament. Still, I had no idea why this man was there. What he did, who he is. He could be a criminal wanted for murder or assault, or something even worse. Yet here I am, sharing a motel with the guy. Feeling⌠oddly safe about it too. Regardless, I made a mental note to force some information out of the guy later on.
Until then, though⌠What should I do? I looked around the room. Tv stand. Tv. Dresser. Two beds, a rug. A table with a lamp and a phone. Nothing that screamed: âEntertainment! So much so youâll forget youâre now a wanted criminal!â
I didnât have anything to do but wait. Wait for Pete to wake up, to continue running away from everyone who now was looking for us. Or, rather, me. The only one between us who has the supposed criminal. The irony in that wasnât lost on me.
I laid back down, staring up at the ceiling. A few hours in silence, with nothing to entertain me but my mind. Should be fine, right?
-
I swiped my hand across the mirror, trying to clear some of the condensation to look at myself in the mirror. The bags under my eyes were striking, screaming how little sleep Iâve had. The blood around my face was mostly gone, save for the dry cuts littering throughout. There were little to no blood stains that were visible from my neck up, which I was grateful for. I looked much better than I did yesterday. Every hour I spent away from that torture chamber was an hour I got closer to being myself again. At least, physically. The constant burning of my thighs was something Iâd become adjusted to, with the occasional sharp pains that came with moving the wrong way or too fast. All of this I could get used to. For the sake of becoming my own person again.
For what seemed like the first time since Iâd left, a flicker of hope flared from deep within me. I shot myself a quick smile in the mirror before looking around for my clothes. I looked around, my brows knitted together in confusion as I had a hard time looking for them.
I felt my cheeks flush with embarrassment as I came to realize that I didnât have any clothes. Iâd been in the same outfit since the day I sat in that chair, this being the first time out of them. Guess I shouldâve packed a bag when running away from the psycho mob boss.
What do I do now?
I donât have anything to wear, and Iâm standing here in nothing but a towel. I couldnât put my clothes back on, they were covered in blood.
Maybe the motel puts clothes in the dresser. Though that would mean walking out into the room like this and looking for them.
I walked over to the bathroom door, putting my ear to the door. I didnât hear anything. No footsteps or shuffling around on the other side. Maybe that means heâs still asleep. Only one way to find out.
I opened the door, peaking my head out of the bathroom. The bed was completely empty, no trace of where Pete had laid. My heart dropped for a second before I saw his suitcase still on the floor.
He didnât leave me. Thereâs no way heâd leave his bag that was full of his stuff with me unless he was coming back.
I took this chance and did a quick jog to the dresser between our beds, opening the drawer. I looked down at the contents of the drawer, irritation filling my expression.
Inside the drawer lay a bible and laminated papers with directions on how to use the phone and tv. Another paper lay under that one, with a menu to the room service. I picked it up slowly, looking at all of the options. My stomach growled loudly as I quietly read over all the food. Now that I think about it, itâs been a couple days since I last ate. That would have to be our next course of action before we left.
My thoughts were interrupted by the shutting of the door, making me jump and spin towards the door. Pete stood there with his back to me, locking the door and peeking out the window before finally turning to face me. He stared at me with a neutral expression. I looked down at his hands- one carrying a bag of stuff that I wasnât able to make out, and a plate of food. My stomach growled again as I looked back up at him. His eyes quickly scanned me up and down, which brought a confused reaction from me before I suddenly remembered what I was wearing- nothing.
My mouth fell open, throwing the menu back into the dresser and shutting it before tightly holding my towel to my chest with both of my arms.
âSorry. I was just-â
âBrought food.â He interrupted, his voice rough and certain, like he knew where the conversation was going and intentionally avoided it. He held up the food, then the bag. âAnd clothes.â
I sighed, my body slumping slightly and my eyes closing with relief.
âThank you. Youâre amazing.â I said, stepping forward and grabbing the bag out of his hands. He turned his gaze towards the floor, nodding once. He shifted uncomfortably, trying not to look at me. I held back a laugh, turning to go change in the bathroom.
âWait.â He gruffed out, making me stop in my tracks. I turned, looking at him expectantly. He slowly trailed his gaze back over to me, starting from my legs and trailing up to my eyes. Then back to my thigh.
âYouâre bleeding.â
My eyebrows scrunched together as I followed his eyes, looking down at my thigh. He was right- the particularly hurtful gash I had dreamt about last night had reopened, bleeding down my leg and inching towards the floor. I looked down at my hands, wondering how I was to stop it from bleeding without stripping naked.
âShit.â I said, setting the bag down on the bed. He set the plate of food onto his own bed, walking in long strides to the bathroom.
âSit down.â
I sat down, watching him walk into the bathroom. I heard him rummaging around in there, using this opportunity to quickly use the end of my towel to wipe the blood away from the bottom of my leg. I quickly sat back up as he walked back into the room, with more towels and a tiny medical kit. One that I recognized from the back of his van.
He stood in front of me, looking down at me with an indiscernible look. I looked up at him, my face starting to heat under his stare- waiting. After a few moments of eye contact, he kneeled down in front of the bed.
âOh, no you- you donât have to-â I started, squeezing my legs together as he got closer to the gash. I became aware of how little I was wearing, trying to scoot back on the bed and away from him. The look he shot me stopped my sentence short. I stopped moving, sitting still as I breathed heavily and watched him. One of my hands across my chest, holding the towel together and the other holding it down at the apex of my thighs.
My heart was beating extremely fast, with both worry and⌠embarrassment? Or rather, fondness. He got his things ready, still not having made any contact with the bleeding gash. He brought one hand that was holding a towel very tightly up to rest on the bed, next to my legs as he finally met my eyes. I noticed his knuckles were white with how tightly they were holding the towel before he started speaking, tearing my gaze away from his hand and to his eyes.
âCan I help you?â He asked, obviously sensing my anxious state. It was strange seeing someone in this position, wanting to help me. Having no evil intentions. My body was still conditioned to think otherwise. I knew he wanted to help, and I needed it. Though I wish he didnât have to ask it, but get it over with. Still, the question brought a blush to my cheeks and a fluttering in my stomach. I would still be thrashing around if he didnât ground me by asking the question.
I let out a short yet sharp breath through my nose before replying.
âYes.â
He nodded, his stare lingering at my eyes before he looked at the gash, bringing the towel over to the bleeding. The moment they connected, a burning spread through my thigh and to the rest of my leg. The hand that held the towel together at my thighs instantly reacted, shooting out to cover Peteâs hand. I winced, his hand stopping the movement and looking up at me expectantly. I blushed again in embarrassment, whispering an apology before putting my hand back on the bottom of the towel. He simply continued to clean off the blood in silence. I bit back groans of pain as he roughly wiped at the wound, whatever liquid he soaked the towel in burning all of the bacteria out.
A tear slipped out of my eye unwillingly, though I couldnât tell if it was from the pain or the predicament we were in. Regardless, I wiped it away as fast as it fell. He finished cleaning the wound, putting all the stuff away and standing up to look down at me. I fell backwards onto the bed, huffing out a breath of relief.
He stood there silently, watching me as I caught my breath. I didnât realize I had been holding it until he finally pulled the cloth away. As we stared at each other, I thought I saw the beginning of what looked like a faint blush beginning to cover his face before he turned away, walking towards the bathroom.
âGet dressed and eat. Gonna shower and leave soon.â He gruffed out, slamming the door behind him. I smiled to myself as I sat up, looking over at the plate of food. Almost every food I had seen on the menu was piled onto the plate, with a glass of water sitting on the dresser. The clothes sat next to it, the name of a nearby store plastered onto the plastic bag it was sitting in. I smiled even bigger.
He bought me clothes.
â
I stood on the concrete outside the motel room, waiting for Pete to lock up the room behind us and return the keys. I looked at the sky, taking deep breaths. The sun shined brightly in the middle of the sky, telling me it was almost mid-day. I wondered where the day would take us. Where we were off to next. I hoped he had a plan, somewhere to go after this. Maybe we could hop from motel to motel until we were safe.
I took in the warmth of the sun, stretching where I stood when he walked past me and towards his car. I was taken off guard, jogging to catch back up with him. He unlocked the car.
âGet in.â He gruffed out, going to the trunk to throw his things in. I looked at him in confusion, listening to his command regardless. He bought me clothes and food as soon as he had woken up and without being asked, but now barks orders at me with no hint of kindness in his voice. It had already started to look too good to be true.
I couldnât help the disappointed feeling that spread into my heart, cementing the once too-familiar walls around it once again.
I shut the door, buckling up and sitting up straight in the passenger seat, waiting. The van rattled with the force at which he shut the back doors, the sound of his things being tossed around in the back to go along with it. I heard him stomp around the side, opening the door to get in. I watched him from the sides of my eyes, watching him start the car. He didnât buckle up, simply throwing some tiny bag at my feet in the passenger. The car roared to life, Pete instantly putting it in reverse. He didnât bother to look behind him before backing up, one hand on the wheel to turn it towards the main road.
It wasnât long before we were back on that all-too familiar highway.
The silence- though becoming familiar in the presence of this man, was unsettling this time. It felt like there were things that needed to be said by both of us, but neither of us wanted to do it. I figured now would be a good time to start chipping away at my long list of questions for him- before he beat me to it.
âHowâd you sleep?â He asked, his other hand coming up to hold the wheel- almost uncomfortably. The formality of the question bothered me, though I guess we werenât exactly comfortable with each other yet. I decided to indulge his pointless question, a tiny part of me appreciating the fact he was even trying.
âLike a baby.â I lied, faking a small smile and looking over at him. I set my left arm on the console between us, trying to make the atmosphere of the car more comfortable and⌠intimate, in a way. âYou?â
He shot a look over at me, like he was trying to read my face. It felt like he was staring directly into my soul. Like he knew I was lying. I stared back at him, trying not to fidget with anxiety. He looked back to the road, dropping the analyzing stare.
âMe too.â He replied nonchalantly.
A blanket of silence fell over the car once again. Though, this time it wasnât uncomfortable. However, I still had questions to ask.
âSo, whatâs the plan now that weâre wanted criminals?â I asked, trying to make it sound playful and light-hearted, though my heart beat in my chest with worry. The sentence wasnât sarcasm, and that brought fear back into me.
His eyes flicked to the rearview mirror, adjusting in his seat at the question. I waited, already growing accustomed to the thought he put behind each question asked of him.
âPlan?â He asked, his eyes shooting to the mirror again before signaling and abruptly changing lanes. My eyes went to the highway before going back to him.
âYeah. The plan to get us out of this mess. Or, at least into hiding until everyone forgets our supposed crimes.â I explained further, my worry increasing at the thought that he doesnât have a plan.
âThis mess isnât as big as it seems.â He said, looking tense as he held the steering wheel. I waited for him to continue, though he looked like he was done talking. I was extremely confused.
âNot as big as it seems? We were on the news.â I retorted. This seemed obvious to me. He scoffed.
âRicci isnât as big and bad as you make him out to be. His first instinct was to go to the police and rat you out. He wants other people to do his dirty work, which I doubt they will unless heâs paying them a hefty amount.â He said roughly, as if I didnât know what I was talking about.
The mention of Leonardoâs last name made my mouth dry up, my heart dropping to my feet. I turned my head back towards the road, taking my arm off the console and trying to shrink back into my seat. He shot a look over at me, but I remained with my stare at the road in front of us. I was fuming with anger.
Isnât as big and bad as you make him out to be.
He cleared his throat, attempting to make his demeanor come off softer before I stopped him from talking again.
âSo thatâs why this is no big deal to you.â I scoffed, my anger coming to the surface. His facial expression changed back into its normal emotionless state as I went on. âYouâre still a ghost. All they had on you was your name. No picture, no made-up list of crimes. Iâm just fucking deadweight, is that it?â
A moment of silence passed between us as the atmosphere adjusted. My anger filled the space of the car, leaving no remains of the familiarity we had started to build just moments ago.
âIâm dropping you off in the city.â He said suddenly, his voice gravelly. My heart dropped. My body went through a number of emotions. I was scared, then I was fucking pissed. I stared at him in silence for a couple of moments, deciding whether or not to say something else. He didnât react at all, sitting perfectly still as if he hadnât just said he was kicking me out.
Fuck this. Iâm tired of biting my tongue.
âYou know what your problem is?â I started, unbuckling my seatbelt and shifting in my seat to face him. He shot me a side glance, then looked into his rearview mirror before looking back at the road.
âOh, yeah? Whatâs that?â
âYou got fucking issues. Issues that you shouldâve sorted out before deciding to play hero and getting me out of that place. âCause I probably wouldâve been safer, getting fucking tortured there than sitting in this van with some stranger whoâs throwing me right back out onto the street.â
His jaw tensed and untensed against my words. He fidgeted in his seat looking out his side and rear view mirrors, getting angrier. I didnât care. I kept going.
âAnd Iâm not dead weight. Iâm really fucking helpful, and youâll need me. I know you think Iâm just some fragile little stuck-up princess who wouldâve been long dead if you hadnât been oh-so-kind as to rescue me, but you donât know shit about me. Or what Iâve been through.â I finished, letting out a breath before I turned to look out the window.
My words lingered in the air as we fell into silence once again. I silently caught my breath, not saying anything else. I couldnât believe he ever saved me in the first place if he planned to just kick me out like this. I didnât have anywhere to go. I didnât know anybody. I would just end up right back into Leoâs hands. The thought made my body break out into goosebumps.
I heard him say something, his voice rough and quick. I was too angry to be focused on anything but my thoughts.
âWhat?â I snapped at him, sighing dramatically. Iâm surprised he had more to say. Of course now he decides to be all talkative.
âSomeoneâs following us.â He repeated, both of his hands holding the wheel. His stare stayed on the rear view mirror. There was nobody in front of us for miles.
My face paled, my heart dropping to my feet. I turned around quickly, my hands holding the back of the seat. There was a single black suv, only a few carâs lengths away from us. I couldnât see the driver.
I didnât say anything in response. I didnât know what to do.
âTurn around.â Pete spoke sharply. I immediately turned around, not knowing where to look. My heart thumped in my chest with anxiety.
âWhat do we do?â I asked, trying not to look over at him. Probably wouldnât be a good idea for them to know we were onto them.
âStay low.â He said, pulling onto the side of the road. I shrunk down from my seat, just my eyes being seen from the side mirror. I waited, my heart racing. Pete sat in the driver's seat, looking calm as ever as he watched the mirrors. I couldnât see them from the angle I was at, so I just stared at his face- his reaction, as to whether or not we were fucked. Not that it ever revealed much.
I heard gravel crunching from behind us. Curiosity taking over me, I slowly shimmied back up the seat to see more through the mirror. As I sat up, I saw the car getting closer and closer. We both waited, holding our breath, as we waited for it to pass us.
Except it didnât.
The car swerved off the road, aiming to hit the back of our van.
âShit.â Pete grunted out, kicking the car back into drive and flooring it. I got pushed back against the seat as we flew back onto the highway. My heart dropped, all thoughts from my head being wiped as I whipped my head around. I watched the car behind us as it mimicked our actions, the suv picking up speed as it tried to keep up with us. He swerved across the highway, trying to lose them. I sat there, panting with my head turned around to watch the car.
My breathing had started to slow down as I watched them. Only a few moments had passed since we started speeding, and I knew Iâd be paying for the rapid shifts in my emotions later.
All that was on my head right now, however, was the car. The windows were all tinted, as dark as they could go. They were determined in their chase, copying our every move as they kept up pace. They even started to gain on us. There still wasnât a single person in sight. No one hanging out the window, trying to shoot us or throw some explosive. Just following. I could see the reflection of the van in their windows- when I suddenly got an idea. I whipped my head towards his direction.
âYou got a gun?â I asked, still hanging onto the sides of the passenger seat. He started to shake his head immediately. âI know you do, Pete. Câmon. I just wanna lose âem.â I said, making sure he knew by my tone that I was serious. I knew I could do this, and itâs not like we had any other choice.
He sat there, both hands holding the wheel, as he visibly fought against the thought. I nodded, hurriedly reaching my hand out in waiting. He glanced at my hand, then back at the rearview mirror- which showed the suv getting closer and closer to us. He gave a final shake of his head, as if he couldnât believe what he was about to do.
âIn the bag. At your feet.â He grunted out, nervously fidgeting his hands that were on the wheel. I grinned, going to snatch open the bag at my feet. There was a small pistol inside. I cheered, looking up at him with a smile on my face. He simply looked at me for a second, his brows furrowed in concentration before going back to the road.
âWatch this.â I said in a cocky tone. I rolled down both of our windows, the breeze flooding into the van. It was aggressive and whipping as we raced down the highway. I stuck the upper half of my body out, trying not to fall out the window. I thanked my childhood self defense teacher as I started doing the breathing exercises I mastered long ago. Theyâd come in handy these past few weeks.
âI can do this. I can do this.â I repeated to myself underneath the sound of the rushing wind. I made sure I was sturdy against the window as quickly as I could. I didnât want them having a chance to fight back. As quickly as I sat on the window, I raised the gun and aimed where I wanted. I didnât think twice- letting out a quick exhale before pulling the trigger.
My eyes flinched subconsciously as the shot rang out, before I pried them right back open to watch.
The bullet flew straight into the right front wheel, making the car spin out and off the road. I cheered, climbing back into the car and looking over at Pete.
He had a smirk on his face, nodding as if to say âwell, look at you.â I couldnât wipe the huge smile off my face, my heart racing with excitement. I knew I could do it.
âNot such a deadweight now, huh?â I asked, laughing to myself as I reveled in the small victory.
âI wouldnât celebrate yet.â He said suddenly, the smirk gone from his face. I looked at him with confusion, following his eyes that were in the mirror once again. I turned around, seeing another suv that looked identical to the one that was chasing us before.
âWhat the fuck? Whereâd this guy come from?â
We couldnât catch a break.
I made sure the pistol was still loaded, turning back around to watch the suv. It was doing the same as the last- just following. I saw Pete shoot me a surprised glance, but I didnât have time to yell at him about his low expectations towards me right now. I leaned back out the window, aiming the gun at the same tire as the last.
This suv was more prepared than the last.
As soon as I raised my arm to shoot, an arm appeared out of the window of the suv- firing a round straight towards me. I reacted on instinct, ducking right back into the car.
âShit.â I cursed, my hand going to my face. My cheek burned and I pulled it away to a tiny bit of blood. The bullet had just grazed my face. They were aiming for my head. My stomach dropped at the thought, but I was alive and thatâs all that mattered right now. I didnât have time to waste.
Pete sat in the driver seat, frantically looking between the mirrors, the road, and me. I ignored him, watching the car. The arm had disappeared, and they were coming around to my side of the car now. I had to do something, fast.
I crawled out of my seat and into the back of the van.
âHey, whatâre you doing?â He asked, turning around quickly to look at me.
âEyes on the road.â I raised my voice, pointing the pistol at the glass. Now wasnât the time to ask questions. The suv was almost caught up to the van.
âHey, careful with that thing.â He replied, subtly trying to dodge the barrel of the gun. I rolled my eyes, muttering a âyeah, yeahâ as I crawled to the doors.
I sat on the steel floor of the van, kicking my feet out to slam against the doors. They flew open, a few things flying out- a bandage, a small dirty towel. The suv was directly in front of me, getting closer and closer. I still couldnât see the people who were driving, despite being this close to them. Some crazy fucking tint they got.
I smiled at them, giving a quick wave before shooting out both front tires. They tried to slam on the brakes as soon as the doors flew open, but I was too quick. They swerved off the road, into a nearby forest. I grimaced as I watched the van fly into a tree. Oops.
I sat on the floor, catching my breath for a second before seeing yet another suv merging onto the highway.
âYouâve got to be fucking kidding me!â I yelled, scrambling to shut the van doors. I struggled against the wind, using all of the muted strength I currently had to pull them shut without falling onto the concrete. I finally got them shut, crawling back up to the passenger seat. I figured I had a second to catch my breath before this one caught up.
âYou plan to help at all, or just keep sitting there and watching me?â I asked, plopping myself into the passenger seat. He looked at me, making eye contact as if he wasnât currently the driver in a high speed chase. I just sat there, panting and holding the stare. He finally smirked and turned his head back to the road.
âThink Iâll just watch.â He grunted. âFeel free to drive, princess. Wouldâve probably been safe by now if I was the one shooting.â
I rolled my eyes, both at the nickname and the sudden boost of confidence from the man who sat and did nothing. The eyeroll couldnât stop the light blush rising to my face. I looked at him, prepared to throw back a snarky remark before I saw the van pulling up right next to us.
âShit, look out!â I yelled, frantically crawling to the driver seat.
âHey, watch it!â He yelled, swerving as he tried to keep the car from skidding off the road. The window of the suv rolled down, a gun coming out of the window.
I sat up straight, closing one of my eyes and leaning forward- pressing against Paul as I immediately pulled the trigger, trying to beat the other guy to it. As soon as the shot rang out, I opened my eyes to see if I made it.
My eyes met the ones of the armed shooter, seeing his shocked expression. I had shot straight through his neck. He gasped for air as my mouth dropped, staring into the eyes of one of Leoâs men.
âDanny?â I muttered, my skin paling and my heart dropping. The suv screeched as the driver slammed on the brakes, flying back and away from us. I stuck my head out of the window, watching it as it came to a stop in the middle of the road. It flew farther and farther away from us as we continued to speed away. I watched it until it completely faded out of view.
I finally brought my head back into the car, coming face to face with Pete. He was looking at me with an indiscernible look. I felt numb, like what just happened didnât actually happen.
I didnât have any time to think about it, as I realized how close I was to Peteâs face. I looked down, seeing that I was straddling him in the driver's seat, my chest pressed to his. He wasnât looking at the road, staring right back at me. The car kept racing, like he didnât even need to look. We were both panting, just staring at each other. The adrenaline slowly came to a halt, my face heating instantly.
âOh, uh- sorry.â I muttered, crawling back over to my seat. He cleared his throat, adjusting in his seat. I brushed my clothes off, running a hand through my hair as I let out a long exhale. I looked at the road, then down at my hands. I was still holding the gun, my finger still on the trigger. I shifted my hold, taking it off and putting it back into the bag on the ground.
I didnât feel like crying, but the reality of what Iâd just done, and who Iâd just killed was far away from me- like I couldnât have actually just killed him. Not Danny. One of the men who has been with Leo almost as long as I have.
How did they even know where we were?
No one had seen us go into or leave the motel, and the news had just broken last night. Thereâs no way someone in that empty town couldâve called the police, let alone notify Leo. It made no sense.
I didnât spiral too far into my thoughts, Pete cutting through the quiet atmosphere with his rough voice.
âI, uh-â He cleared his throat, âI know a place. A place we can lay low until the mediaâs off our back. Itâs in New York.â
He stared straight ahead, still as ever. I nodded, muttering an âokay.â
I turned my head towards the window so he couldnât see the smirk that broke out over my face. Guess I proved him wrong after all.
The wind became more comforting as he gradually slowed back down to a normal speed. The sun started to set, just the long road ahead visible as we drove through the night. I had plenty to think about on the long trip to whatever mysterious place Pete had in mind. However, there was one main thing I couldnât shake from my thoughts.
I wasnât sure whether the reactions I got from Pete and Iâs touches were from a softer, much scarier, feeling I started to develop towards him as we spent time together- though it had only been a little over two days (most of which I spent unconscious). Or, rather, the feeling stemming from the excitement of finally having a partner. A partner in crime- someone that looks out for me, as much as I look out for them. Regardless, I wasnât completely opposed to the feeling. I could feel the hardened walls around my heart start to chip, ever so slowly.

~NOT PROOFREAD/EDITED- ALL MISTAKES ARE MY OWN.~
~~~
The cold air bit my skin, burning and stinging my face. I let it, too out of my head to move. The wind blew my hair as I held onto Peter. I looked down, seeing the lights of New York City fly underneath me. It was freezing. My ears, face, and hands were numb, the wind howling in my ear. Peterâs hand was on my waist, and he occasionally looked down at me to gauge any extreme discomfort or anxiety. When he saw the same blank stare, void of any clue as to how I was feeling, he would hold me a little tighter- his thumb rubbing my side. I stared straight forward, my mind absent and not holding onto any one thought very often. A couple of times I found my grip on Peterâs shoulders loosening as I looked down. I knew I wouldnât fall- he was holding onto me so tightly, I wouldnât be surprised if it bruised. I guess I wanted to just find out for myself. Take a chance on if I would fall. I didnât know what that meant.
It wasnât long before my apartment building came into view. Though I didnât expect to be flying around all night with Peter, I canât say I was particularly happy to be home either. I knew that going inside would mean silence, which would mean coming to terms with everything that had just happened. Which I didnât want to think about. I knew the result would be overwhelming. I guess a small part of me did hope to continue flying around New York, holding onto Peter as he shot his webs from building to building.
My daydreams were disrupted as Peter clung to the building, maneuvering so he could open my window for me. He grunted, pushing it up and moving closer to set me carefully on the windowsill- like I was made of glass, one wrong move and I shatter onto the streets below us. I reluctantly let go of him, setting my feet down on the carpet of my room and ducking the rest of my body into the room. I walked inside, going to close my door and locking it before turning around.
Peter was gently closing the window, making sure to lock it. He turned around to face me, taking off his mask. He had a few tiny cuts on his face, his hair messy. He had a look of pity and concern on his face, like he was waiting. Waiting for the moment. I stared at him, standing there in his spider-man suit, and my bottom lip quivered. I broke eye contact immediately, looking down at the ground.
He stood still in his spot next to the window, watching me as I sat down on the edge of my bed to take off my shoes. My hands were shaking. He slowly walked over to me, getting on his knees in front of me. I didnât look at him- I couldnât. Tears started slipping from my eyes.
âBabyâŚâ
That was all it took.
I broke into quiet sobs, my body shaking. Peter immediately wrapped his arms around me, pulling me into his chest. I cried and cried, while he silently rubbed my back- coaxing it all out of me.
A few minutes of this passed- me trying to control my breathing, sobs and whimpers being ripped from my body. There was so much I had to say- so much I wanted to say, but I couldnât calm down enough for anything coherent to come out.
Peter gently pulled away, holding my face as I looked up at him. My body uncontrollably shook with every sniffle, but the tears on my face were dry and I fought to keep it that way. He looked at me, his eyes filled with sympathy and love. I looked into his eyes with a frown, my own hands coming up to cover his. He rested his head against mine and closed his eyes, letting out an exhale.
âLetâs get you cleaned up.â He whispered, pressing a kiss to my forehead. I nodded, but I couldnât get up as he stood up and held out a hand for me. My entire body ached, my thighs burning. I looked up at him, my eyes watering slightly.
âI⌠I canât, I-â
âShh itâs okay, I got it. I got you.â He said, crouching down to pick me up bridal style from the couch. I held onto his neck, a tear falling down my face. I leaned against his chest as he walked into the bathroom. He set me on the counter, sitting right next to the sink.
âGive me one second.â He said, sprinting back into the room. I heard shuffling in my room, the sounds of clothes being thrown. Before I knew it he was racing back into the bathroom in a dark gray shirt and sweatpants. His arms had cuts as well, none of which looked terribly bad but it couldnât have felt very nice.
He closed the space between us, standing between my legs. My hands ran up his arms, looking at his scrapes and bruises. I didnât realize I was crying until he picked my face up, his thumb rubbing away my tears. He leaned in, kissing them away as they left my eyes. I breathed out shakily next to his ear, the feeling of his skin against mine soothing me slightly. He pulled away to look at me, looking at my lips. My eyes were lidded with the swollen aftermath of my crying, but I pulled him into me instinctively. Our lips met, the salty taste of my tears mixing between our lips. I tried to pull him into me as much as I could, wanting him as close as possible. He pulled away slowly, a string of saliva connecting us as he looked down at my lips.
He stared at me with such intense love in his eyes, I almost wanted to look away.
âCan I?â He asked, motioning to my skirt and tights. They were torn, fabric missing from my skirt. I nodded, sniffling and using the back of my hand to wipe underneath my eyes. He kneeled down, helping me take off my tights. My legs stung as the fabric went down my thighs. He looked up at me, wrapping a hand around my ankle. His other hand went up to my thigh, setting his palm on it as he leaned his forehead against my leg. I put my hand in his hair and on top of his on my thigh, rubbing circles on his hand as I tried not to cry again.
My heart stopped as I heard a sniffle that wasnât my own.
Peter breathed out against my leg, like it was ripped from him. My hands halted their movements, waiting. His hold on my ankle held tighter as he let out a whimper.
âPeter?â I asked, my voice rough. His head moved around, like he was trying to shake his tears away. He didnât look up at me.
âPeterâŚâ I whispered, trying to pull him up. He slowly stood up, looking down. He licked his lips, not taking his eyes off the ground. His eyes were red, tears flowing from his eyes. My heart broke for him.
I pulled him towards me. He stood between my legs, his hands gently grabbing the outside of my thighs. I bent my neck to look at his face, my brows furrowed with concern. He shook his head, trying not to make eye contact. He looked at the ceiling, the walls. He tried to turn around, but I grabbed his hands.
âPeter⌠What's wrong, baby? What is it?â
He let out a huff of a laugh.
âWhatâs wrong.â He stated, shaking his head and saying my name. âWhatâs wrong? I almost got you killed.â
I had already started shaking my head, bringing my hands to try and grab his face. He walked backwards, away from me. Tears ran down his face.
âYou almost died.â He said matter-of-factly, his eyes wide. I looked at him, my brows furrowed with a frown painted on my face.
âNo, I didnât. No.â
âYes. Yes, you did.â He replied, covering his face with his hands.
âPeter, I did not almost die.â
âYou wouldn't have been there if it wasnât for me!â He yelled, taking his hands off his head.
âNo, I wouldnât be here now if it wasnât for you.â I said, looking at the back of his hands covering his face. His back hit the bathroom wall, and he started to slide down to the ground.
âIâm so sorry. This wouldnât have happened, you wouldnât be hurt if it wasnât for me-â
I hopped down from the sink, biting back a wince and sitting down at his level. His body lightly shook from the cries he let out. My own eyes watered at the sight of him so upset.
âHey,â I whispered, putting my hands on his knees. He didnât budge. âHey.â I said again, bringing my hands up to gently take his own hands off of his face. His face was red, his eyes puffy and filled with tears. He looked down at the ground shamefully, his tongue darting out to lick his lips.
âI⌠I canât keep putting you in danger like this. I canât sit here, knowing Iâm the reason youâre hurt. I just canât.â He whispered, his hand coming up to rest on top of my own that was holding his face. He looked in my eyes, his face stern. He blinked away tears as I stared into his eyes. My hands went loose, but his hold on them kept both in place.
âWhat are you saying?â I asked, my eyes threatening tears as I shook my head and looked at him in angry confusion. âNo. Donât you dare. Donât you dare do that, donât try and leave. I need you, you canât do that. I wonât let you.â I said matter-of-factly. My heart was beating against my ribs, anger and hurt clouding my vision.
His lips parted, but no words came out. His eyes switched between looking at both of mine. His expression was unreadable.
We sat there, on the ground, panting and looking at each other for a minute. His lips were chapped, with dried blood dotting over them. Biting his lips was a nervous habit he had. One I love. His hair was still messy, sticking up save for a few strands matted to his forehead. The cuts on the side of his face had scabbed over. His nose was red with the cold from outside, and now from the tears he shed. We sat there staring at each other for what seemed like forever, but yet not enough time all the same.
Suddenly he let go of his hold on my hands, sitting up and moving on his knees so he could pull me into him. I wrapped my arms around him instinctively, holding him so tightly I hoped to transfer all of my love and thoughts to him.
Donât leave me. You canât. I canât do this without you.
His arms held me the same, his hand rubbing up and down my back. His head in my neck, sniffling once. My eyes were squeezed shut. I wanted to stay like this forever.
âYouâre spider-man. I knew what I was getting myself into. I shouldnât have gone back when I knew you had it under control. You didnât do a single thing wrong.â I whispered to him. His movements paused, listening to me. âYou saved me, Peter. Things could have been much worse. Iâm lucky I walked out of there at all.â
A final tear left my eye as I tightly pulled him into me again. He brought his arms from around my waist to around my neck, pulling me in by my shoulders. He placed kisses on my shoulders, not arguing against what I said. I was grateful.
His arms let go of my shoulders, moving back down around my waist. He stood up, careful not to squeeze me too hard or bump into anything. I held onto him tighter, my mouth opening in question before he set me down on my previous place on the counter. I sighed out against the numbing pain in my legs before giving him a little smile. He returned it, his hands running down the length of my arms. He leaned in to kiss me on my forehead before pulling away slowly.
âLet me take care of you.â He whispered, a thumb going to part my lips. My eyes scanned him, looking at the admiration and sadness that clouded his face. I nodded, Peter taking a cloth that was sitting on the counter and running it under water. I sniffled, watching him tentatively bring it up to the cuts on my face and neck. I grit my teeth in pain, and he watched me carefully.
I stared at him, at the focus in his eyes as he cleaned up my wounds. The pain was a distant feeling, fading as I looked at every feature on his face. His lips- parted as he licked at them occasionally. The small cuts on his face, covered with blood. My eyes drifted to his eyes, which were clouded with emotion. I couldnât tell what it was right away. It wasnât sadness, or fear. I looked back down at his lips, which he was biting as his hand slowly came to a stop over the cut on my thigh. I looked down at my thigh, at his hand.
He put the cloth back on the counter, both of his hands resting on my thighs. I moved my hands to entwine them together in my lap, looking at him as he was deep in thought. I waited patiently, knowing that whatever he wanted to say was worth the wait.
âI, uhâŚâ He began, licking his lips nervously and fiddling with my hands. He was still looking down at my thighs.
He met my eyes, blinking as he found the courage to speak.
Holy shit, that was intense and hot and intimate at the same time. Amazing work!!
~NOT PROOFREAD/EDITED- ALL MISTAKES ARE MY OWN.~
~~~
The first sentence is always the worst.
I spun around on my chair, groaning at the ceiling. I faced my computer again, looking at the blank document. I had absolutely no clue on how to start this essay. My fingers tapped against the desk anxiously as I tried to focus. A breeze blew through the window, making my curtains slowly wave with the wind. It was getting dark and cold outside, but I didnât want to close it- I almost never did anymore, out of habit. Subconsciously, my eyes drifted to my phone sitting off to the side. I looked back at my computer. He said he would text me when he got home. I have an essay to do.
My eyes went to my phone again. I audibly groaned, putting my head in my hands. I didnât know how to start my essay, and I couldnât focus with Peter on such a big mission.It sounded like a big mission from what I heard when he called me hours prior, anyway.
âHey Peter whatâs-â
âSo so sorry, I canât talk for long. I wanted to call and let you know I canât make it tonight for date night. Iâm so, so sorry. Something-â He took a breath, wind blowing into the speakers of the phone as I heard the sound of his web shooters. He inhaled before continuing.
âSomething came up. A really big reptile-alien-bad-guy thing popped up and is freaking people out, I have to take care of it. I swear I will make it up to you and-â
âPeter.â
â-Iâll text you as soon as I get home. Iâve wanted this date to happen for so long-â
âPeter.â
â-and Iâll make it up to you. I swear it.â
I stayed quiet for a moment, waiting as I heard him catch his breath. He inhaled deeply as I continued to hear him flying through New York.
âYou done?â I asked, raising my eyebrows even though he couldnât see me.
âNot yet. Iâm so sorry.
...now Iâm done.â
I laughed at him, shaking my head.
âItâs completely fine. You have a city to look after. Please be safe. And text me as soon as you get home, okay?â
âIâll- when I- not worried- little lizard. Itâll be- home soon.â The connection started to break up, his sentences cutting in half as I tried to listen to what fragments I could understand.
âPeter? Peter, youâre breaking up.â
âIâll make it- soon as I- get home.â
âText me as soon as you get home. Please be safe.â I said, praying he could hear me through the bad connection.
â-be safe. Love you.â
The call disconnected.
I winced as pain shot through my finger, snapping me out of my thoughts. I sat up, snapping out of my recollection of earlier in the day as I looked at my finger. A wooden piece of the desk had broken off, going straight into the tip of my finger. Blood started to flow out of it and drip onto the desk.
âShit shit shit,â I said, grabbing my phone and running to the bathroom to wash it off. I opened the cabinet, grabbing a small band aid as I ran the wound under the water. It stung, but my mind was too occupied elsewhere to really dwell on it. I stood there, watching the water wash the blood away as my mind went back to itâs sole subject of the day- Peter.
He had said he loved me before he hung up. Weâd been dating for only a couple months now, and that was the first time heâd ever said it. My mind was balanced between focusing on Peter saying he loved me and being worried for his safety. While my heart fluttered every time I thought of the call, it also worried with concern for how he was doing. I really really liked him. So much that sometimes it scared me. I had to know if he said it by accident- by routine, or if he really meant it. And if he meant it, I had something to tell him too.
I was getting increasingly worried. He usually gets his little missions done in a couple hours. The call took place this morning, and now the sun had just finished setting outside. I picked my head up, looking at myself in the mirror. I reassured myself in my head.
Heâll be fine. He said heâd text me when he got home- maybe he just forgot. Maybe heâs asleep in his bed right now, perfectly fine.
I watched my brows furrow in the mirror as I tried to convince myself.
Maybe a shower would help.
â
I stepped out of the shower, wrapping a towel around myself as I wiped the condensation from the mirror. I started to brush my teeth in the mirror before my mind ultimately drifted. I picked my phone up from the counter with my unoccupied hand, unlocking it.
Still no text from Peter.
I even checked every social media, every platform that weâve chatted through. Just in case. Still nothing. I sighed, placing it back down. There was not much I could do from my bedroom. Even if he was in trouble.
I once again attempted to avert my attention, clearing my mind completely. I would wait. I could be patient. For him, I would wait.
I finished brushing my teeth, rinsing my mouth and looking at my finger. The bleeding had come to a slow and gradual stop, but the injury was open and an angry red. I wrapped the band aid around my finger. The pain became more noticeable as my head cleared. The splinter was much bigger than I thought, and hurt much worse coming out. I shrugged as I looked at the band aid placement. It would be okay for now.
The bathroom was still foggy with steam from the shower as I opened the door. The sun must have set even more, leaving my room even darker than before. I turned off the bathroom light, which left me completely in the dark. I walked over to my bedside lamp, turning it on so I could find my way to my dresser. The yellow lamp took a few clicks before it turned on.
I sighed as I stood there for a moment. Today had been a stressful day, and I wasnât sure if Iâd be getting any sleep tonight. If I can barely keep my mind off of any specific topic for longer than a couple minutes, there was no way I could lay in bed, in the dark, in silence, and be perfectly fine.
I tried to stand there and think of every possibility. Everything I could do. I wonât be going to sleep any time soon, so what could I do that could calm my nerves?
I could⌠go to his house.
That way, if he was sleeping, I would know and be able to come back home with a clear head. If he wasnât home, I could wait there until he eventually made it home or even scour the internet for news of a reptile-alien-bad-guy thing, and go offer my help?
It was a good enough solution for me. I was getting restless, and hated waiting around and not doing anything helpful. If I couldnât think of a first line for an essay, I could help my boyfriend fight a lizard to save New York. Right?
Before I could reach for my dresser underneath my lamp, I was brought out of thought by the sound of a voice from the shadows.
âSomething on your mind?â
I jumped back, my hand shooting to my mouth as I let out a short scream in fear. I turned around to the source of the noise.
Peter was sitting on my windowsill, his back resting on the closed window.
I instantly let out a breath, putting my hand to my chest and closing my eyes.
âYou scared the shit out of me.â I breathed, shaking my head. I opened my eyes to look at him.
He was laughing, fully dressed in his spiderman suit- save for his mask. His hair was messy, his face a little dirty. He had his backpack on and was carrying his mask with one hand, the other draped around his waist.
He moved his legs to the inside of my room, jumping down onto the floor. He almost sagged to the ground, using an arm to hold himself up on my office chair. He winced as he tried to remain on his feet.
I instantly started towards him, my face twisting with concern and confusion.
âOh my god, Peter? Are you okay?â I asked, my hands going to his waist to help hold him up.
âYou should see the other guy,â He groaned out, falling forwards and into my chair sitting next to the window. I sat down on the floor next to the chair, my eyes scanning from his neck down to his waist. There were three huge slashes across his chest, bleeding through his spiderman suit. My heart raced as I looked at him with concern. âBy the way- not a little lizard. Huge, gigantic lizard-â
âOkay, okay- huge lizard, got it. I need your help, okay? I need you to take off your suit.â I said, trying not to panic. He just gave me a huge smirk, his eyebrows raised. I stared at him, waiting. He continued to smirk at me in silence for a moment before messing with it, pulling it to his head. It got stuck on his head, him flailing his arms around for help. I laughed and helped pull it up the rest of the way, his head popping out of the material. His suit rested below his stomach, the material scrunched up together. He had a huge smile on his face, despite the nasty cuts across his chest.
I met his smile before my eyes fell down to his chest, seeing jagged scars. They went from his right shoulder down to his stomach. My mouth parted in shock. The cuts were still bleeding, blood smeared around the entirety of his chest. He seemed unfazed by them, staring at me and gauging my reaction.
âPeterâŚâ I whispered, shaking my head. My eyes teared up. He looked at me with sympathy, his eyes reflecting the light of my lamp.
âIâm fine, really. I promise.â He said, bringing his hand up to put my hair behind my ear. âIt looks worse than it feels.â
He brought his hand down the side of my face and rubbed his thumb along my cheek in comfort. Even though I should be the one comforting him. I nodded against his hand, looking down at the wound again. I blinked away my tears before talking again.
âIâll get you a towel.â I whispered, smiling at him and standing up. His eyes filled with a mischievous look as he smirked again, looking me up and down and biting his lip softly. His hand came out from the side, going to the bottom of the towel I had forgotten I was in. He gently pulled on it, not enough to move it but just enough to get my attention.
âI could⌠use this one?â He asked, his eyebrows raising in suggestion as he started to sit up on the couch. His face twisted in pain with the movement. One hand went to hold my towel in place, the other going to push him back down onto the couch.
âEasy, bugboy.â I said, walking away and towards the bathroom. I bit my lip, my face hot and my thighs subtly clenching together.
âWhatâd you call me?â I heard him say after me, laughing.
I grabbed some of Peterâs pajamas that he had left behind before, taking them into the bathroom with me- a dark blue shirt and a pair of my gray shorts. I closed the door and changed quickly, running a couple washcloths under water and grabbing a small first aid kit.
âWeâll have to make do with what I got.â I shrugged, walking back into the room. He was laying on the floor now, his back against the foot of my bed. His head leaned against the wood, his arms limp at his sides. He turned and looked at me, his adam's apple bobbing as he swallowed and followed me with his eyes. I ignored his stare, walking over to the other side of him and settling down on the ground next to him. I dropped everything but the washcloth, situating myself so I was close enough to him. He looked directly at me, a lovestruck expression on his face. My face heated under his stare, my stomach fluttering.
I brought the washcloth up to his chest, rubbing the blood off of his skin. He groaned in pain, his head leaning farther into the bed, looking at the ceiling.
âI know, I know, Iâm sorry,â I cringed as he tensed up with each movement. One arm grabbed onto the wood of the bed frame, hanging on for dear life. The other dangled loosely at his side on the ground. After getting the blood surrounding the wounds, I brought up the second washcloth to the actual gashes across his chest. He brought his head back down, staring at his chest and waiting for the contact. His entire body was tense.
I decided to get it over with, applying the cloth to the cut and starting to clean it. He winced and groaned in pain, his hand that was lying on the floor grabbing onto my waist in comfort. My face heated, my eyes looking into his with sympathy. He was still looking down at the cut, watching me clean it again and again.
âHey, whatâs this?â He asked, picking up my hand and examining my finger. Iâd forgotten about the cut.
âOh, itâs nothing. Just got distracted earlier.â I shrugged.Â
âYou should really be more careful.â He said, looking into my eyes as he brought the finger up to his mouth, kissing the bandage.
âFunny.â I deadpanned, continuing to clean the huge cuts he got from fighting a mutant lizard.
I continued to move the cloth against his wound, Peter letting out a particularly loud moan of pain. His hand squeezed my waist, bringing me closer to him. His mouth was parted and he was panting, looking back at his chest. I looked from his lips to his eyes to his hair, in awe of him. My thighs clenched together at the sounds he was making. The cuts were clean, though I felt an urge to keep cleaning it just to hear him again.
He finally looked up, catching his breath. His face was only inches from mine. My breath hitched as his eyes met mine, and I smiled at him. His eyes glanced from my eyes to my lips. I looked at his lips, then looking into his eyes that were searching mine.
He started to sit up, looking into my eyes for any signs of hesitation or doubt. My breath hitched in anticipation, my gaze darting between his lips and his eyes. He sat up closer and closer to me, taking his time. He tilted his head, his lips just barely touching mine.
I followed him, my eyes on the edge of closing. He brought the hand that was holding onto the bed over to rest on the bottom of my face and neck, his thumb rubbing my cheek lightly before pulling me into him. His head dipped down to catch my lips in his, pulling me against him so our lips molded together. He pulled away to look at me, his eyes scanning my face. I breathed heavily, looking at his lips only. The hand that wasnât on my face was being used to brace himself against the floor. He sat up straighter, using that hand to grab my waist and pull me onto him. His hand stayed on the back of my neck, gripping lightly.
âYou look so good in my clothes.â He whispered, bringing both of his hands to my face now to hold me. He looked at me with desire, with need. I sat down fully on his lap, feeling him hard beneath me. I let out a broken breath and put my head against his.
He pulled me into him again, tilting his head to pick mine up into the kiss. His tongue swiped against my bottom lip, to which I opened my mouth wider. He licked into my mouth, our tongues entwining together as the kiss got more passionate.
I started to grind down on him, earning a whiny moan from him. He kissed me even more aggressively, sitting up even straighter as his hands went down to the hem of his shirt that I was wearing. They stayed there for a second, continuing to kiss me.
âTake it off.â I whispered, pulling away to rest my head against his. He panted, catching his breath and nodding with extreme enthusiasm as he pulled the shirt over my head. I looked at him, watching him look at me with awe.
âYouâre so beautiful.â He whispered. I grabbed his face, kissing him once, twice, three times before he pulled me away gently. He held my face with one hand, his other pushing me down onto him by my waist, encouraging me to grind on him. His mouth went to my neck, licking and sucking hickeys everywhere he could reach. I moaned, riding him through his clothes. He was achingly hard beneath me, the thin materials of our clothes the only barrier between us. He moaned against my neck with every movement, my hands going to his shoulders for support.
âUse me,â he groaned into my neck, pulling his mouth away from my neck. He pulled me in by the back of my neck to look at him as I continued to grind against him. âI need you to use me. I want you to. Please. Get yourself off like this, can you do that for me?â
I nodded, looking at him with dazed eyes. His lips were swollen, his hair messy. He looked all over- at my face, at my lips, my neck, my chest, down to where I was grinding on him, chasing the high I could feel starting to stir in the bottom of my stomach.
âI need you to say it. Say- say you want to cum like this.â He groaned, one hand going to the back of my head. His hand threaded through my hair, grabbing it and pulling it back to reveal my neck to him. I moaned, closing my eyes.
âI want it, I want to cum. I want to use you like this, please.â I moaned out, my hands going to pull on his hair. His mouth attached itself to my neck once again, moaning with me.
âGod, yes. Please. You feel so good.â
He took his hand out of my hair, going to wrap around my back- pulling me down onto him as he started to thrust upwards. He pulled me down in time with his thrusts, pulling away to look at me as he moaned. His eyebrows furrowed, his lips looking at my own. We looked at eachother, our faces contorted in pleasure as we chased our finish. I pulled his hair harder, pulling his head backwards as I leaned forward and kissed him. It was sloppy as our tongues explored each other's mouths, his hands roaming all over my back.
âFuck- Iâm almost there, keep goingâ
His thrusts started to get sloppy, his tongue slowing as he got closer. His eyebrows furrowed as his eyes squeezed shut, focusing on that fast coming feeling. I pulled away from him, a string of saliva connecting our mouths as I watched him. He wrapped his arms around me tightly.
âShit. Donât stop baby, donât stop, please- donât stop.â He frantically moaned out, panting. I continued to ride him, watching his eyebrows raise in pleasure and his mouth drop open.
âPlease, please, please, please,â He moaned loudly, begging as his body shuddered. He rolled his hips up, grinding up into mine. I moaned softly, bringing his lips back onto mine. I kissed him gently, slowing down but continuing to grind on him. I was so close. He was breathing heavily, trying to catch his breath but still softly gasping from the contact.
âI need you to cum. Cum for me, please. I want you to cum.â He whispered, moving the hair from my face and staring at me. I nodded, looking at him as he encouraged me. I picked up my pace, so close to finishing.
âThere we go. Youâre doing so good.â He moaned, starting to thrust against me again. âYou can cum for me, canât you?â
I nodded immediately, closing my eyes.
âLet me hear your voice, pretty girl.â He whispered, gathering my hair into one hand to kiss the base of my neck.
âIâm almost there. I wanna cum for you, please- I wanna-â I moaned, feeling an orgasm fast approaching. I closed my eyes, my thighs starting to shake as I tried to keep my pace. He moaned with me, his lidded eyes looking into my own.
âCum for me babyâ He whispered, kissing from my neck up to the side of my face. I moaned loudly, wrapping my arms around his shoulders and pulling him into me.
My thighs shake as I finish, holding him against me as the orgasm hits me. The euphoric feeling washed over my body as his leg bounced underneath me, adding friction. I could feel him kissing my neck, my shoulders, everywhere he could reach as I slowly came back down from my high.
âThank youâ He whispered into my hair, panting.
âDid you-?â
âTwice.â He grunted out, shifting underneath me. I breathed out a laugh, my head dropping to his shoulder. His hands ran up and down my back soothingly. I pulled away, smiling as I stared at him.
His eyes were barely open, smiling at me with swollen lips and even messier hair. I moved the hair that had gotten into his face, sticking to the sweat that formed at his hairline. I kissed his forehead, going down to his lips. He brought a hand up to tuck my hair behind my ears, looking at me with so much love it was almost overwhelming. My stomach fluttered and my heart pounded in my chest. He leaned into me, his lips touching mine.

The hard steel floor of the car hitting my head as it went over a bump woke me up. I groaned loudly, and probably obnoxiously, as my hand went to my head in reflex. My head throbbed, and my entire body felt weak and sore. I felt a warm liquid at the crown of my head. I pulled my hand away to see blood.
âShit.â I whispered, putting my hand back down at my side and closing my eyes. The feeling of a bandage around my waist caught my attention, making me sit up. I swayed as I sat there, zoned out. I listened to the sound of a moving car on rough pavement, filling the entire space. I couldnât think or focus on any one thing.
My stomach dropped as my eyes opened to take in my surroundings. It had just hit me that I was, in fact, in a car. A completely unfamiliar car. I used my hands to haul myself backwards, so my back was against the wall of the car. I needed to scan my surroundings. I didnât have too much time to freak out about being in a random personâs car, though, before a terrible pain shot through my waist. I winced sharply and looked back down, seeing that I was bleeding through the bandages. Or lack thereof. It was just a roll of bandage wrapped repeatedly around the entirety of my stomach and waist.
âYouâll wanna be careful back there. Used up the last bandages to make sure you donât bleed out.â
The man driving gruffed out, shooting a quick side glance towards me as he spoke. His hands stayed loosely gripping the wheel, looking ahead. His knuckles were badly bruised, and covered in blood. The back of his head looked familiar. And his voiceâŚ
âYou.. youâre the guy Leo was torturing.â I thought out loud, a hand laying tenderly on my waist against the bleeding as I tried to ignore my pain and find answers. Â The man gave a stiff laugh, nodding his head once. I didnât feel scared, despite the strangeness of the situation. I was just relieved. Relieved to be out of that room.
âLeo? What, you guys close?â
It was my turn to laugh, dryly but genuine at the thought of being described as âcloseâ with Leonardo Ricci.
âSomething like that.â I said, just barely loud enough to be heard over the sounds of the van driving over the rough pavement. The road was clear for miles, the only light being provided from the headlights of the car. The man looked at me through the rearview mirror. He had blood splattered on his face, staining his skin.
âSure doesnât look like it.â He said, his eyebrows furrowed as he stared at me for a few seconds. I looked down in embarrassment, my heart aching. Yeah, I bet it doesnât.
He mustâve sensed the weight in what he said, as he cleared his throat and shifted in his seat before speaking again.
âSo whatâs the name of the woman bleeding all over the back of my van?â
I guess that was his way of apologizing.
âWhat, you think us getting tortured in rooms next to each other makes us close?â I spoke bitterly, messing with the end of a bandage and shaking my head. âSorry buddy but I donât give my name out to nobodies.â My face felt hot with anger.
He let out a laugh- filled with genuine amusement at my last sentence.
âEven if that nobody got you out of that torture chamber?â
He got me out of there?
I donât know why that sudden realization was shocking to me- seeing as I was in the back of his van and not still strapped to that chair. The admittance that he was able to escape and thought to take me with him was what shocked me. Whyâd he do it?
Regardless, I was still pissed. I never asked to be saved.
âEven then.â I replied, ending the conversation. He smirked, nodding once in acknowledgment before turning his full attention back to the road. I scoffed to myself, feeling the anger radiate off my body.
Who the fuck even is this guy?
He mustâve been important if Leo himself was torturing him. Only the most special of them- or, I guess, us- get that luxury. I hadnât heard of or seen him before, which means he couldnât have worked for him. Maybe he had information that Leo wanted.
Thatâs about as much thought as I put towards that topic, as I decided I could just ask him about it later on.
I looked around the back of the van, though it was almost impossible to see with the lack of light. There were a few guns, thrown in a box towards the back doors. There was a huge duffel bag. There were also a few first aid kits, all of which had been emptied and thrown carelessly into the back. Empty bandage rolls littered the floor, along with clothes stained with blood. I looked down at my own clothes, which were mainly untouched save for the bottom being cut off in order to get to the wound on my waist.
Well he obviously wasnât taking me hostage, or planning to kill me. Or else saving me and leaving all these weapons back here within my reach wouldnât have been smart to do.
There was a knife sitting a few feet away from me, covered in blood. I looked at the guy driving, then at the knife again. I slowly crawled forward, careful not to make noise. I grabbed it, placing it in the back of my pants.
Just in case.
I craned my neck to look forward at the road, seeing the same nothingness I had when I first woke up.
âWhere are we going? Are we still in Michigan?â I asked, getting suspicious. I was fine with knowing little to nothing for now, as long as I was away from Leo. Knowing where we were headed was the least he could tell me right now.
âGoing to a motel for the night. Heading into Ohio.â
My eyebrows raised in reaction. We were making fast progress. Glancing at the speed we were going, I could guess why.
I guess that was good enough for now.
I leaned my head back to rest against the rumbling wall of the van, resting my eyes for a bit. The blood slowly dripped down the side of my head, but with nothing in sight to get rid of it, I let it. I could worry about that when I woke up. Getting tortured really took a lot out of you, I guess.
âDonât go dying on me back there.â He gruffed out. I slowly opened my eyes in annoyance, looking at the rearview mirror. He was already looking at me, his face unreadable.
âNot dying. Getting some sleep.â I muttered out, already closing my eyes.
âFamous last words.â
I internally rolled my eyes, turning my body away from him and leaning into the wall of the van to get some more rest. I didnât sleep at all. I hadnât slept in weeks for obvious reasons, but even now- when sleep was at my feet, begging me to fall under- nothing. A part of me was scared to sleep- just to wake up, strapped back into the chair. Another part was still suspicious of the guy driving the van, no matter if he saved me. He was a stranger, and one covered head to toe with blood at that. I wondered what he had to do to get out of there. And how he did it all while hauling an unconscious body along with him.
I started to drift off.
âWhat did you just say?â He set down his glass of whiskey, his hand still holding it. His back was to me as he turned his head to the side, putting his ear towards me. Like he was giving me a chance to change what I said.
âYou heard me, Leo. Iâm done.â I said, holding my ground. Even if my hands shook at my sides.
He stayed still for a moment, not moving. Even the air around us held its breath.
In an instant he picked up the glass, turning around and pulling his arm as far back as it could go to throw it in my direction.
Slam!
I jolted up, hands going to the sides of my head in instinct. My heart was pounding, my chest heaving up and down. My waist ached, causing me to pull my hands down as fast as they went up. I looked around me frantically. The van. Iâm still in the van.
The van shook slightly from the force at which the man shut his door, like he was purposely trying to wake me up. I heard him walk around the side, opening the back doors as wide as they could.
âMorning sunshine.â He said, opening and shuffling through the duffel bag to look for something. My eyes squinted at the intrusion of light in the van. I looked at him, finally able to see him in the light.
His entire face was stained with blood. He had a cut across his right cheekbone, open and still bleeding. He had a cut underneath his left eye as well. His jaw had a dark bruise underneath it. He didnât look terrible, though. I didnât know how he looked. A feeling I couldnât name stirred in me. I didnât like it.
âCâmon, letâs go.â He muttered, closing and grabbing the duffel bag, throwing it over his shoulder. He held out a hand for me to grab on to. I looked at him, my brain taking a second to process everything that was happening very fast. I grabbed his hand, letting him pull me to the door. My body felt better, but still extremely sore and, at some parts, stinging with pain. One hand stayed on the side of my waist as I jumped out the back of the van and onto the concrete. I looked around, seeing the rundown motel we were in for the night. Now that my eyes had adjusted, it wasnât that bright outside. The sun was beginning to set in the distance.
I mustâve been out for a while.
He shut the doors, mumbling a âfollow meâ as he walked to the room weâd be staying in. I wobbled behind him, trying to keep up with his long strides. He got to the door, unlocking it and standing to the side for me to go in first. I walked into the room, surprised.
There were two twin beds against the wall, a tv on a little dresser standing opposite of them. There was a lamp in between the beds. The room had a hideous orange wallpaper with an unidentifiable symbol littered all over it.
I guess this is what a motel looks like. Canât say Iâve missed out.
I hobbled forward towards the back of the room, where another door was. I opened it, relief flowing over me to see the bathroom. I turned on the lights, the cheap fluorescents flooding into the main room. There was a hole in the wall, which I wouldâve thought was funny if I wasnât still in pain. I heard the motel door shut and lock.
I sprung into action, grabbing all of the half-washed towels in sight and setting them on the counter. I also grabbed what was left of the single soap bar stuck to the counter, and any other materials I could find.
I looked up in the mirror on instinct, taking a step back in shock. I had tiny cuts scattered all over my face, most of them already turning into scars. The top of my head had a trail of dry blood from there to the bottom of my face. I had blood and dirt matted to my face. My eyes watered and my mouth parted in horror as I examined the rest of my body. I had a large gash on my arm, from my shoulder to my elbow. I had bruises everywhere, like they had been trying to cover my entire body with them. My fingers bled, and I knew they would be stained for a while. The bandages still stayed around my waist, which I knew would reveal the worst injuries I had. I braced my hands on the sink, tearing my eyes away from the mirror. Tears fell from my face onto the counter, one after another. I covered my mouth with the back of my hand as I let out a sob. I was unrecognizable to myself in the mirror. The reflection of what Leo was capable of. What Leo did. What I let happen.
This is my own fault.
I shook my head, trying to snap out of it. I refused to break down right now. When I was finally out. And in a motel- with a man whose name I didnât even know.
I sniffled, shaking the thoughts out of my head and using my arm that wasnât pressing against my waist to pick up the first aid kit I found underneath the sink. I opened it, the blood on my hands making everything slippery and much harder than it should be. The first aid kit kept moving away from my hand as I tried to pry it open. Everything I touched got covered in blood.
I finally got it open, taking out the thread and needle to stitch the cut at the top of my head closed. I put the needle in my mouth as I wet a washcloth, bringing it up to try and clean around the wound. The tears continued to fall down my face as I looked at the cut through the mirror.
He walked into the frame of the door, his looming figure entering my peripheral vision. He stood there, silent and still. Watching me. I put the washcloth down, taking the needle out of my mouth and bringing it up to my head. My hands were shaking terribly, and I couldnât puncture the skin enough. I felt so weak. I kept a determined look on my face, trying to ignore his presence. I held my breath as I tried to stop the shaking, but with no success. I sighed in frustration, pulling the needle away from my face. He stepped forward.
âHere.â He whispered roughly, holding his hands out as he silently asked for the needle. I shot a sideway glance at his hands, staying silent. He waited for a second before sighing and turning to wash his hands. I watched him scrub his hands as he got all the blood off with little to no effort. He was pretty good at it.
Must not be his first time.
He used a towel to dry his hands before facing me again, holding his hands back out. I dropped the needle and thread into his hands, bringing my head up to look in the mirror. I looked into my eyes in the mirror as he moved closer, standing right beside me.
He shot me a quick look through the mirror, with what looked like a hint of sympathy as he telepathically told me to brace myself. I quickly nodded once, letting him know to just get on with it.
Iâd become very close with pain very quickly over these past few weeks.
He began to stitch the wound closed, blood starting to drip down my face again at the puncturing of the skin. It stung and burned, but I showed no reaction. I could see his eyes drifting from the cut to my reaction every so often, but my gaze stayed on my reflection in the mirror. He stitched me up in silence. No comments, no questions or prying for information. Which I was grateful for.
He finished the suture, closing the stitch up and bringing the towel from the counter back up to my head to wipe off the blood. I looked at his face in the mirror. His own face was still covered in blood, but his focused expression on his face told me that he wasnât in any pain. Or he was good at covering it up. He held my chin lightly as he wiped off the blood, the close contact making my face warm. Good thing the blood staining my face covered it.
He threw the washcloth back onto the counter.
âAll done.â
âThank you.â I whispered, looking down at the counter. I didnât know what I was feeling. Embarrassment, maybe? It was softer than that.
He nodded in acknowledgement, taking off his jacket.
âYou gonna give me my knife back now?â He asked, taking his shirt off as well. I looked over at him and froze, forgetting that I had grabbed it. He had a hint of a smirk on his lips as his eyes pierced into mine. I rolled my eyes, grabbing the knife out of the back of my pants and slapping it into his hand. He turned it and stuffed it in the back of his pants. He had a cut on his chest, dried blood surrounding it. Most of his injuries had started to heal already. Mine still ached, like a constant reminder. As if Leo himself made sure theyâd never disappear. As if he didnât want me to forget.
He messed with the stuff in the kit, looking around for what he needed.
âNeed help with that?â I asked, looking at him through the mirror. He looked up at me before looking back down just as fast.
âNo.â
I scoffed and moved closer to him, grabbing the bandage out of the kit and pushing his shoulder back so he would put his arms down at his side. He shifted irritably and clenched his jaw, but I ignored him. I cleaned around the cut before opening the bandage and putting it on the wound, applying pressure so it would stick. He uncomfortably muttered out a thanks and started cleaning his other injuries. I ignored it and walked past him, back into the room.
The bandages I had on my waist probably should be changed, but I was too exhausted and far from mentally stable enough for it.
I sat down on the edge of the closest twin bed, groaning and grabbing the remote to turn on the tv. Some soap opera came on, two of the characters passionately kissing each other. I switched the channel, going through all the cooking channels and decade-old movies they had to offer. The news popped up, to which I decided to let play as background noise. I knew I wouldnât be getting much sleep.
Breaking News popped up on the top of the screen, flashing red. I waited.
âWe are just getting word of two criminals on the run from law enforcement. The suspects areâŚâ The sound died out as a picture of me popped up on the screen. My name was under it. Next to me, an âunknown identityâ was pictured, with a name at the bottom. My heart dropped, pounding in my stomach. I could feel the blood drain from my face as I started to shake again.
âPete!â I yelled to the man in the bathroom,
âHow the fuck-â he said, walking out of the bathroom and looking at me. He followed my eyes to the tv. I couldnât take my eyes off the screen.
âThey are armed and dangerous. Call 911 if you have any information on the criminals and do not approach them.â
âCute name.â Pete said, shooting me a glance. I didnât really feel like laughing.

~NOT PROOFREAD/EDITED- all mistakes are my own~
Blood spilled from my mouth as my left ear rang. I spit the rest of the blood onto the floor of the bus before laughing and looking back up.
âThat all you got?â
The ninja looked into my eyes as they started to pull the gun that was strapped to them to the front of their body. I smirked at them, trying to make it seem like I wasnât phased by their intimidation.
My heart was beating so hard I was surprised they couldnât hear it over the sounds of the bus driving on the rough pavement. I was terrified.
âHey, wait wait wait wait waitâ Karen said from beside me, raising her hands as best as she could with the restraints on. âWe donât know what weâre saying. We're all just scared in here, all right?â
The woman carrying a pistol walked over, setting a hand on the ninjaâs shoulder. The ninja lowered the weapon, turning around to deal with another passenger who started yelling.
The woman motioned over another guy who had been standing in the corner of the bus. He wasnât a ninja, but rather wore plain black attire. He had a big gun in his hand. The woman stood there, staring at me as he made his way over. I looked between them, shifting uncomfortably underneath their stares. The woman took her time looking me up and down before looking at the guy with the gun and nodding. She started to walk away.
âHey hey hey, what does that mean?â I asked, trying to sit up straight.
The guy raised his gun, and didnât hesitate to shoot right at my thigh. I gasped and flinched, not feeling anything. Did he miss? I looked up at him in confusion as he smirked and walked away.
âNext one to make a sound dies.â The woman yelled to the bus, holding eye contact with me. I let out a breath I wasnât aware I was holding. The woman looked at me with disgust before turning away. I sat back up, wincing as what felt like a cold breeze went against my leg. My hand went to press against where it was cold.
âThanks, Page. I knew what I was doing.â I whispered to her, keeping an eye on the next passenger that was being harassed by the woman and ninjas.
âDid you? Looked to me like you were trying to get killed. Did he shoot you?â
The passenger started yelling and fighting against them. I turned to Karen.
âI knew what I was doing. And no- he didnât shoot me. If they wanted to kill us, they would have-â
I stopped mid sentence as a shot rang out through the bus. I flinched, my hands shooting up to my head. The sudden movement caused pain to shoot through my entire body, but my fight or flight that had kicked in kept it at bay. I opened my eyes slowly, my head turning to the left- where the shot came from.
The passenger that had started to fight back went limp in the ninja's arms as they lowered them to the ground.
Shit. I thought we were just being used as leverage to bring Matt out. People that were supposed to be kept intact until they had him. Now I knew- we were just bait. Easily disposable bait.
I panted, my anxiety suddenly flying through the roof. I turned to Karen, who had her head down and was panting as well. We exchanged a look before her eyes went to my ear.
âWhat the hell is that?â She pointed, putting her face closer to my ear. I backed up instinctively.
âWhat? What?â I put my own hand up to it, pressing it before pulling my hand away to look at it. I didnât feel any pain in my ear, it felt fine. Normal. My hand was covered in blood. Shit.
âWhat is that? Are you bleeding?â Karen asked. I kept looking at my hand.
âIt must be from the punch they got in. I feel fine.â I said, staring at my hand. I didnât lie. I did feel fine.
I could see Karen continue to stare at me from the corner of my eye, but she didnât get a chance to speak again before the bus came to a screeching stop. The ninjas dragged the body of the passenger to the back door, kicking it open and hauling him out first.
In all the commotion, I finally moved my hand away from my face and looked at my thigh. There was a bullet lodged into the middle of my thigh. Blood was coming from the wound like a fountain, covering the floor of the bus and my hand. I started panting, watching the blood trail from the passenger that passed us. Karen was too busy checking on the other people around her, and I was grateful.
If Karen notices I actually got shot, she gets mouthy. Then we die.
She stood up, helping an elderly next to her out of the bus. I let out a long exhale before sharply inhaling and grabbing onto the window above me, pulling myself up. It was harder than I anticipated, but I fought against the fire spreading through my leg and jumped up. One of the ninjas was waiting by the door.
I jumped onto the floor with my good leg, wincing and following the crowd down a hallway into an elevator that was dimly lit by blue fluorescents. I stood in the front of the crowd, the rest of the passengers pushing to get behind me and hide. Adrenaline was racing through my body.
What am I gonna do? How is Matt going to be able to get all of these people out? Or take out all of the people holding us hostage? What if he doesnât come at all? Shit, my thigh hurts. Iâm getting real tired.
The elevator came to a stop, the masked kidnappers yelling at us to get off. We rushed forward into the room of what seemed to be a warehouse, one wall completely made of tinted windows. A police siren sounded from outside, my head darting in the same direction.
The woman that had shot the passenger came through the doors last, speaking in Japanese to the ninjas before leaving again.
Shit. The cops are going to die if they donât get out of here. They donât have a chance against them.
Where is Matt?
I dropped onto the floor, getting dizzy. I almost fell over before Karen leaned against me, lifting me with her body.
âHey, you okay?â
I opened my eyes- which I didnât realize I had closed in the first place. I looked at her.
âYeah, yeah.â I replied, nodding. I attempted a smile.
âYouâre extremely paleâŚâ She trailed off, her eyes starting to search my body. I started rambling.
âThink itâs just the adrenaline. Or anxiety. Or nausea. Or any number of things going wrong right now.â
Karen kept a serious face, not even listening to me as she moved my hands that were pressing onto the wound in my thigh.
âOh, godâ She whispered, gasping and continuing to talk. I didnât hear what she said. I was exhausted, and my body was hurting so badly.
I let my eyes close, listening to the screaming outside. I could hear faint voices over the police radio, but no gunfire.
Just adding to the number of people to die.
I didnât feel anything towards that realization. I didnât feel anything at all. All of my thoughts were observations. Nothing deeper, none of my own thoughts. I just wanted to lay down for a while. The screaming suddenly ended abruptly, which I didnât want to think too much over. I tried to focus on the radio, on what was being said, but it was no use. I didnât have heightened senses. Karen was still talking to me, still whispering something. I finally stopped hearing the police radio and came back into the warehouse. I couldnât hear what Karen was telling me before I felt my body swaying lightly. She tried to prop me up, to sit me up by myself. I fell to my side, onto the ground.
The people who kidnapped us, along with the woman and the man dressed in black all started yelling. It sounded like they were on the other side of a tunnel. They raised their guns, towards all of us sitting in a group in the middle of the room. They were going to kill us.
I heard my name being said in panic before the lights in the warehouse shut off completely. It was pitch black in the room, save for the tiny squares of light being reflected off the windows and onto the floor.
Heâs here.
I started laughing on the floor, Karenâs hand on my lower back in worry.
âYouâre all fucked.â I said, spitting out a bit of blood that was in my mouth. I turned to my back, staring at the ceiling. I was panting and trying to breathe- which was getting harder and harder to do. Blood was slowly filling my mouth.
Thatâs when I heard the thumping and crashing of punches, connecting and connecting. A punch thrown, a weapon hitting a body, the body hitting the floor. Repeatedly.
Câmon, I gotta get up. Heâs here. Letâs go.
Hostages started running around, trying to find the exit and even helping- who I assumed was Matt- take down some of the ninjas. Some of them failed. All I could hear was the screaming and sound of bodies hitting the floor all around me. My vision was starting to get blurry before I heard a gunshot amidst the fighting. I sat straight up suddenly, my vision clearing for a second.
What was that? Whereâs Matt? And Karen? Are they okay? Whereâd that gunshot come from?
Adrenaline pulsed through my veins, all pain subsiding. I could barely see anything, save for shadows running around the warehouse. I frantically looked around, trying to see a familiar face. All I could hear was the sound of my heartbeat, pounding in my ears as it muffled the sounds of screaming.
Whereâs Matt? I gotta find him, I gotta- Iâve gotta see him. Where is he?
The sound of rapid gunfire coming from behind me rang through my ears. I crouched slightly, but the feeling of my ribs pressing against my lung made me sit straight up again. I gasped, panting heavily as I turned around. There was the guy who shot me, firing round after round intoâŚ
I turned my head to look at who he was shooting at- to see a limp body, lifted off the ground and taking all of the bullets into their back. Someone was holding the body up, using it as a shield.
Someone in a devilâs costume.
My heartbeat picked up again, this time with a tinge of relief. Heâs here.
Matt was struggling to keep the body up, still being a good distance away from the shooter. The shots were relentless, not coming from a pistol anymore but from an assault rifle. He needed help.
I looked around me on the ground, ignoring the puddles of blood and lifeless bodies. I started to crawl around, my hands on the floor feeling around for a weapon. A gun lay a couple feet from the shooter- a couple feet from me. I crawled closer, watching them. All their attention was on Matt, on killing him. I wouldnât let that happen.
I was pulling myself, putting all my weight into my arms. My leg was dead weight. The pain was relentless, like a knife being twisted deeper and deeper with every bit of movement. I was breaking out into cold sweats. I was leaving a trail of blood as I crawled like my life depended on it. When, it wasnât mine. It was Mattâs.
I have to help him.
I grabbed the gun, aiming it at the manâs shoulder and firing. He yelled in pain, the gunshots finally stopping as his shoulder got thrown back. He staggered backwards a couple of steps, his hand going to cover the wound as he grimaced. He slowly picked his head up, making eye contact with me.
The room spun, and I couldnât see more than a couple feet in front of me anymore. The gun dropped from my hand. I couldnât find the energy to hold it, let alone pick it up. I was too weak. I dropped to my elbows as I tried to hold myself up. I held eye contact as he aimed his gun towards me.
I looked down at the ground.
I helped him. Itâs okay, this is okay.
Blood dripped from my mouth and onto the floor as I waited for the shot to ring out.
And it did.
Again. And again. And again.
But, it didnât hit me.
I was shaking, struggling to hold myself up. I couldnât even lift up my head to see who got shot. I started to zone out.
A hand lifted my chin up. I opened my eyes, taking a second to focus on what was in front of me. Not what- who.
âSweetheart, hey- youâre okay. Weâre okay.â He whispered, helping me up so I was sitting upright, one of my hands on my thigh and the other on Mattâs that was now holding my face.
âMatt.â I whispered, my voice cracking. Tears fell from my eyes in relief.
He was okay. And now heâs here.
It was much quieter in the warehouse. Everybody else must have left. How long have I been in here? And by myself? I was so confused, but he was here. He was with me.
âYouâre bleeding.â He said, his hand going to the back of my neck. He was moving his head around, trying to sense where it was coming from.
âI got shot.â
âWho? Who shot you?â He grunted out, his hand falling on top of my own that rested on my wound. I forced my eyes shut and groaned in pain. It hurt so bad. It was so cold.
âI also got punched.â I whispered, letting out a laugh. He didnât find it funny. The red lenses over his eyes stared at my shoulder. His jaw tensed and untensed. Repeatedly. He tilted his head. I panted, watching him.
His daredevil suit was pristine. The armor on his shoulders, on his abs. All my attention was on them, on the material. I forgot we had been talking until he spoke again.
âWho did this to you?â He whispered out, barely audible. My attention snapped back to the devil in front of me. The devil that laid a tender hand on the back of my neck, gentle and comforting. The devil that would never hurt me. The devil that was slowly losing patience.
I could tell by the way that his jaw was set. He was biting down so hard, it must have hurt him. I looked at his chin. I could feel the tears falling down my face still. His lips were slightly parted.
âMr. Trigger happy over there. You already got himâ I said, using my head to motion behind him. His hand remained on my head as his head turned to the side, using his ear to sense the guy on the ground. His hands left my body as he stood up and looked at me. I looked around. We were alone, save for the unconscious bodies surrounding us.
âMatt⌠what are you doing?â I asked, blinking up at him. He got the guy. He knew that. He knows that heâs not getting up. Matt had hit him pretty good. He wasnât dead, but he wasnât a threat anymore.
Matt just stared at me in silence for a moment before turning around and walking back over to the guy.
âMatt.â I said, reaching for him.
Matt reached him, yanking him up by the collar of his shirt. My hand went to my mouth as I yelled his name again. The guyâs head wobbled, his hand shooting to try and push Mattâs away but he wasnât there enough to put up a fight. Matt wound his hand back, punching him straight across his jaw. Blood splattered onto the floor as the guy yelled in pain.
âMatthew!â I screamed, pulling myself towards him on the ground. It was like he didnât hear me.
Matt picked him up, yelling out as he punched him across his face again. The guy's hands weakly went up to try and offer any sort of defense, but he was getting weaker and weaker.
My hands were being rubbed raw from the concrete as I pulled with all my strength towards them. I was shaking, the pain all over my body a muted background noise. Matt picked him up, punching him again.
The guyâs hands went limp at his sides, choking on his blood as he laid on the ground. Matt stood over him, his chest rising and falling dramatically as he grunted out breaths. Rage steamed from his shoulders, fueling him. I could feel it. I was terrified.
âMatt, pleaseâŚâ I cried out, getting closer to him but still too far to stop him. He didnât react to me, as if I wasnât even there.
âPlease⌠pleaseâŚâ The guy on the ground whispered out, like the words were being ripped from him subconsciously. Tears mixed with my blood falling onto the ground.
Matthew lifted his hands up, slamming them onto the manâs chest. He lurched forward, spitting blood onto Mattâs mask.
Heâs gonna kill him.
I crawled to the gun the man had been using, pulling it towards me with all of my effort. I fell onto the ground, flipping myself around to face the sky. I shut my eyes to focus and strain myself to hold the gun. I breathed heavily, my lungs feeling like they were about to explode. It stung to breathe in, and burned to breathe out.
You have to do this. He doesnât know what heâs doing. He does this, and heâll hate himself forever. You have to stop him.
I turned myself back around, looking back at Matt. He was still hitting against the manâs chest with no mercy. I leaned myself off the floor with the gun, aiming where I wanted it. The guy on the ground was almost gone, barely breathing. Blood was everywhere. On the ground, all over Matt, almost reaching me.
Matthew raised his hands one last time, as if God himself was trying to put a stop to it- trying to pull him away, up and off the ground. Away from the man he was killing.
I inhaled deeply.
As Mattâs hands started to come down, I squeezed the trigger.
The bullet fired, parading straight towards Mattâs hands. It hit the armor on his forearm, throwing his arm away from its destination. It threw him off balance, both of his hands flying away from the man in shock. He stood still, breathing hard with his mouth parted.
I let out a breath I was holding.
But I couldnât breathe back in.
The gun fell from my hands, and Matt finally looked at me. I couldnât see his eyes, but his mouth twitched with recognition- and fear. I mustered as much of a smirk as I could, before I felt the final moments of my head throbbing.
I fell onto the floor, the ceiling disappearing as a black void spread across my vision. Matt screamed my name in agony, his footsteps echoing throughout my ears. I couldnât see him.
Matt? Where are you? Whereâd you go? Am I dying?
In my last moments of consciousness, I thought of him.
I hope heâs okay. Itâs not his fault.
â
I gasped, sitting up straight.
My ribs shifted with the movement, a stabbing pain spreading through my torso. I winced as my hand went to the source of the pain- feeling a bandage. I ripped the blanket off of my lower half, gasping at the sight. I was wrapped in bandages around my waist, with gauze strapped onto my thigh.
There was a moment. Just a moment- of peace, of unknowing.
Before it came in waves.
The bus, getting punched and kicked repeatedly, getting shot in the thigh, shooting, fighting, Daredevil, shooting Matt-
Matt. Matthew.
I suddenly became aware of my surroundings. The bed I was in- it was Mattâs bed. I was in his loft. I relaxed subconsciously, sitting back onto the pillows. All the pillows had been put behind me, as to prop me up.
âMatthew?â I yelled into the silent apartment, my voice scratchy. My throat hurt. Along with the rest of my body.
Immediately, almost as if he was waiting for me to call him, he appeared at the open door separating his bedroom and the rest of the apartment.
He was wearing gray sweatpants, with a dark gray shirt. His red glasses were nowhere to be found, which both surprised and relieved me. I didnât want any part of Daredevil right now. I wanted Matt.
His hair was ruffled atop of his head, with a cut across the bridge of his nose. He had tiny cuts and scrapes across his right cheekbone. His right arm was bruised in the shape of a bullet. I held my breath.
âHey. Donât do that.â He said sternly, lessening the distance between us. He stood at the edge of the bed, still too far away.
âDonât do what?â I spoke out, as a whisper. I couldnât look away from his arm.
âDonât blame yourself. For this.â He held up his arm. âOr anything else that happened that night.â My mind was racing, but quickly quieted as he spoke the last sentence.
âThat night? How long has it been?â
He swallowed, looking down before muttering, âFew days.â
I sunk even deeper into the pillows. I didnât know what to say.
We sat in silence for a few minutes. Not a single sound in the apartment. I couldnât even hear him breathing, which made me breathe even quieter out of nervousness. After those few minutes it started to hurt, which made me close my eyes and breathe out shakily as I waited for the pain to pass. Matt hadnât moved from the edge of the bed, standing as still as a statue. I was too nervous to look at his face. I had no idea how he felt. Or how I felt. The air felt hesitant, anxious. Like either of us speaking might break it, letting in waves of thoughts and feelings neither of us were ready to bring to the surface.
He spoke first, after I let out another wince of pain and brought my hand to rest on my thigh. He said my name softly.
âIâmâŚâ He shook his head, raising his head to look towards me. âIâm so sorry.â
His eyes were filled with tears, his lips raised in a pout as he tried to stop them from shaking.
âMatt, you donât have to be sorry-â I started. He interrupted me.
âNo. I lost control, I shouldâve been there for you- you were bleeding out. And all- all I could do was try to kill the guy who did it? You needed me.â He yelled, a tear leaving his eye. I just listened to him, my own eyes filling with tears. He panted with a look of disbelief and sadness on his face.
âDid you kill him?â I whispered, scared of the answer. I wouldnât know what Iâd do if he said yes. Yes would mean heâs already gone. Everything he believes in, everything he is. Ruined. Because of me.
âHeâs in a coma.â I shouldâve felt relieved that Matt didnât kill him, but I couldnât help the guilt that was straining my heart.
âI shouldâve just shut my mouth in the bus. I donât know why I had to test them like that.â A tear fell from my eye. A sarcastic laugh of disbelief left his mouth. I looked at him with confusion.
âAre you listening to yourself?â He asked, his face turning from sadness to anger. My heart dropped.
âMatt, what are you-?â
âIâm the reason youâre here, most of your body wrapped in bandages to stop all of the bleeding. You were asleep for days. Days. Because of me. And youâre sitting here, feeling guilty because I almost killed him?â
âYou didnât do this.â
âYou know what? I wish I wouldâve killed him. I wish I would have. I would do it a thousand times over, a million times over. Just so I donât ever have to go through hearing your heartbeat almost disappear like it did.â He yelled, panting and out of breath. Tears left his eyes, his voice cracking in pain. I was crying now. âI thought I lost you. You were unresponsive for so long. I prayed, I- I begged for Him to help you. I made a promise. A promise that if you woke up, then that would have been the last time.â
âThe last time? The last time for what?â
âThe last time I put you in danger like that.â
I laughed. I couldnât help it. I was in utter disbelief at the way his mind worked. Everything about this situation was far from funny. He continued.
âPeople who get close to me only end up hurt. Itâs what Stick told me a long time ago, and I should have listened-â
âYouâre gonna let Stick, a man who crawls back here at least once a month just to argue with you because he has no one else left in his life, tell you how to live your own? Matthew, heâs a miserable and lonely old man. One that definitely has no right to go around telling people how they are supposed to be living their life.â His jaw was set, like he was ready to argue. I kept talking before he had the chance.
âI knew what I was getting into when we started dating. Hell, I was ready for it. Iâm sitting here, alive and breathing.â
âBarely-â
âNothing that happened that night was your fault. You did the right thing. Nobody was killed, and you saved everyone you could. Including me. You saved them. You saved me.â
âI should have never expected you to deal with this. This is what happens to people who get close to me. I canât let you keep putting yourself through this.â He said matter-of-factly, sitting on the edge of the bed.
âYou donât get to make that decision, Matthew!â I yelled, sitting up straight. I couldnât feel any pain anymore, I was too angry. âThatâs my decision. Not yours. And Iâm not gonna let you get yourself killed one day because youâre too stubborn to ask for help, or even let anyone get close enough to you to offer it. Youâre not doing this, youâre not pushing me away. I love you and Iâm not leaving.â I said sternly, inhaling deeply.
He looked down at the bed, breathing deeply and sitting still. I stared at him, looking for any kind of reaction or response. I was waiting for him to argue. If he didnât get it, I didnât know how I was going to make him see it from my perspective.
He sat at the edge of the bed, visibly sinking into himself. I knew he was drowning in his thoughts, in what he thought was right. He looked devastated.
I pulled the blankets off of me, moving to crawl over to him. It was extremely painful, my thigh burning as I moved while my ribs pinched my skin. I bit back my groans in pain. He opened his mouth, probably to try and stop me from moving, but I had already closed the space between us.
I threw my arms around him, hugging him so tightly that I was afraid if I loosened it he would have disappeared. I sobbed into his neck.
âPlease.â I whispered.
His arms lifted from his side at the sound of my voice, one going to gently wrap around my waist, barely touching to avoid the bandages- the other going to the back of my head.
âOkay. Okay.â He whispered back, pulling away slightly to kiss the top of my head before putting his head back into my neck. I opened my eyes, inhaling his scent. One I could never get tired of.
I pulled away, looking at his face. He was smiling at me, rubbing my back soothingly. I closed the distance between us, placing my lips on his. A passionate, unhurried kiss. Our lips molded perfectly together, pressing myself into him. One of my arms went to his own, before he gently bit my lip. I moved my arm, pulling away from him and starting to apologize. He beat me to it, speaking up first.
âThatâs some aim you got.â
I laughed, wrapping my arms around his neck.
âWell, we canât all have heightened senses and a devil costume.â
He smiled at me, his hand going up to hold my face. We looked at each other for a moment, silently living in the reliving fact we were here, alive. Together.
âI love you too by the way.â He whispered, giving me a cocky grin.
âIâd hoped you hadnât heard that.â I said, going in for another kiss.

~NOT PROOFREAD/EDITED- all mistakes are my own~
I sat on the couch, my knee bouncing up and down in worry. My elbows rested on my knees, my hands clasped as I looked down at the ground. I looked to the huge windows on the wall to my left, watching the snow fall. It was snowing pretty hard outside, which only added to my worry for Matt.
I woke up in the middle of the night due to a nightmare, with Matt nowhere to be seen. His side of the bed was empty and the dresser was open, with clothes thrown everywhere and his usual black daredevil outfit missing from itâs chest. I sighed to myself, wondering what crime had dragged him out of bed at one in the morning.
I couldnât sleep without him, so I went to the kitchen to make some tea and wait for him to come back. Now, two hours later with no sign from him, I was starting to get really worried. He left his phone on the nightstand, so I had no communication-
The thought stopped mid sentence in my head as I remembered- his burner phone.
He had me memorize the number for when he called me if I ever got in trouble, but instead Iâd be the one calling to see if heâs okay.
I ran to the bedroom, unplugging the phone from my charger and opening my side table drawer. I searched the drawer, throwing things on the ground and out of my way as I looked for the piece of paper with the number on it. The tiny corner of a piece of paper was folded at the bottom of the drawer. I grabbed it, unfolding it and laying it flat on the bed. I sat in front of it, typing in each number into the phone.
I held it up to my ear, my hand going to my face as I listened to it ring.
Once. Twice. Three full rings before he picked up.
All I heard was the sound of him panting.
âMatt? Matthew? Are you okay?â I asked, my brows furrowing as I stood from the bed and started to pace the room.
A long moment of silence passed before he answered. All I could hear was his raspy and broken breaths before he sharply inhaled and spoke.
âOpen the door.â
The call disconnected as I threw my phone on the nightstand, running to the door. My hands shook as I unclasped the door chain, turning the lock and throwing the door open.
Matthew, or rather, Daredevil stood in front of the door, one hand leaning against the threshold. The other was on his stomach. With the flickering of the broken hallway lights, he looked like a huge shadow. An extremely intimidating black blur of a human, looking down at me. His chest was moving up and down rapidly as he tried to breathe. He mustâve heard my heart racing, as he spoke first.
âDonât worry, you should see the other guys.â He tried to limp inside, but started to fall forward after letting go of the wall.
I ran to his side, wrapping an arm around my shoulders and using all the strength I could muster to help walk him to the couch. I could feel a wet stain of what I assumed was blood making contact with my waist, having bled through his shirt. He stumbled at my side, almost falling over every other step. I broke into a light sweat as I readjusted my hold on him, using my left hand to hold up his waist more. He winced with every step.
I grabbed his right hand that was over my shoulders, raising it over my head and guiding him to sit down on the couch. He laid back, resting his head on the back of the couch. I took him in, getting overwhelmed with all the blood as a first instinct. His hands were at his sides, gripping the couch in pain. I took a step forward to help him before he spoke.
âClose the door. Lock it.â He rasped out, his voice rough and frantic. I jumped at the first sound of his voice, at how demanding it was. I didnât hesitate to listen, running over to close and lock the door completely before running into the kitchen.
I grabbed a washcloth from the cupboard, turning on the kitchen sink to run it under warm water. I watched him as I impatiently waited for the water to warm. His back was to me, but his head continued to rest on the back of the couch. His mouth was parted as he breathed out through it. The black fabric he uses as a makeshift mask was still on his face, resting just above the tip of his nose. His legs were spread wide as his feet rested on the floor, planted to the ground.
The entire image was what Matt would describe as sinful. Which would also be the perfect word to describe the thoughts running through my head at the sight of him like this.
I pushed those thoughts to the back of my head.
Make sure heâs not gonna bleed out on our couch first, then focus on how hot he looks.
I turned the sink off, quickly wringing the towel out before running back over to the couch. He was still as I awkwardly tried to stand between his legs on the rug. I started to bend over to reach his mouth before he sat up and scooted to the end of the couch, his hands going to the back of my thigh. His face stopped right in front of my stomach, looking up at me. The light from the window illuminated the left half of his face, that of which was not covered by a cloth. His hands gently pulled my thigh towards him, so my lower half was leaning against his chest. My face and chest warmed at how close we were suddenly. I would never get rid of that feeling, those nerves, no matter how long weâve been together. He was very attractive. And seductive, without even trying. I looked at him for a second, glad that he could do everything but read minds before I brought the washcloth up to his mouth. His lips were bruised and had a long cut from the bottom of his top lip to just below his bottom lip. It had dried blood leading down to his chin. I started to lightly scrub off the blood, my eyes glancing between his lips and his hidden eyes. His breathing had gone down more towards normal, and now he seemed apprehensive. Hesitant.
I didnât have heightened senses like he did, so I wasnât sure if the apprehension was from the pain of his wounds or something else he was hiding. I made quick work of cleaning up his mouth to worry about the bigger wound, that of which his hand was still covering on his stomach.
I put my hand on my chest, leaning him back against the couch. He held his breath as he laid back on the couch, looking at me from underneath the cloth. I leaned forward, placing my knees on either side of his thighs- straddling him. His hands that were laying at his sides went to my waist, holding me in place. He started to sit up, leaning towards me and tilting his head to the side. I placed my hand on his chest, forcefully pushing him back onto the couch.
âNot until you tell me what happened.â I said, earning a sigh from him. âAnd we stop whatever is making you bleed through your shirt.â I continued, looking down at his stomach. He let out another short sigh before loosening up his hand that covered the wound. I placed my hand over his bloody one, gently moving it and placing it at his side. The tight black shirt was largely stained with a dark red. I could feel my heart pound before my hands went to the bottom of his shirt.
âCan I?â I asked him.
âYes.â He breathed in response.
My eyes went back down to his stomach, starting to pull the shirt up. A deep and angry slash went straight across his stomach, starting from the left side of his waist and ending right before his belly button. I raised the shirt above the wound, gathering it at the top of his chest and leaving it there to expose his stomach. Blood drained from my face at the sight of the wound. My hands dropped subconsciously. Even I could hear how hard my heart was beating, which meant that Matt was being suffocated by it. My suspicions were confirmed as his non-bloody hand rose from the couch to envelop my own. His thumb rubbed the back of my hand in comfort as he sighed and began explaining.
âI got woken by the sound of screaming. It was so loud. It was all I could hear. I put on my suit and ran outside to follow the noise, the yelling. A kid yelling. It was coming from this alley, where I found this guy holding a kid hostage. Waiting for me.â He said, taking a breath and shaking his head. âI kicked the shit out of that guy, and made sure the kid escaped. He mustâve just been bait with how easily they let him go. Two more guys ran into the alley, throwing punches and trying to get me in this taxi that was waiting down the street. More guys came. And more. They just kept multiplying, no matter how many I took out.â He started breathing harder, the recollection bringing his adrenaline and worry back up.
âThe snow made it hard to take on all of them at once, and they started to come in with weapons- crowbars, poles. I couldnât fight all of them. I didnât even get a chance to count all of them, I wouldnât have made it. I ran the first chance I got. Had to run a few miles away to lose them before I came back.â He finished, shakily inhaling before catching his breath again.
A wave of sadness washed over me for him. I was grateful he got the kid out, but he could have died. He almost did.
His head hung low as he tried to control his breathing again. I unclasped my hand from his, bringing both of my hands to his face. I placed them at the bottom of the mask, barely tugging the bottom up and waiting for confirmation from him. He gave a tiny nod before I pulled the mask up and off of his head. His eyes were closed, before I threw the mask over my shoulder and placed my hands on the sides of his face. He opened his eyes, looking down. One of them was slightly red. He looked ashamed.
I used my pointer finger to tilt his chin up, bringing his lips to mine. He reacted immediately, bringing his hand to my face and pulling me against him even more. Our lips molded perfectly against each other. He pulled away to tilt his head the other way before going back in, trying to deepen the kiss and use his other hand to push me down onto him. I could feel his growing bulge underneath his black pants before I pulled away from the kiss. His mouth tried to follow mine before I spoke against his lips.
âYouâre still bleeding on my couch, Murdock.â I panted, out of breath. He tried to catch his breath as well before replying.
âMustâve forgotten. Guess Iâm a little distracted.â He whispered, slightly bucking his hips in affirmation. I gasped, my hands pulling on the back of his hair in response. His mouth fell open as he leaned into my touch. I leaned forward until my lips were touching his.
âI guess Iâll have to take away the distractions.â I whispered against his lips, before abruptly standing up and walking to the kitchen. He leaned forward, his hands trying to grab for me and pull me back towards him, but I was too quick. He groaned and fell against the couch.
âWeâre going to Foggyâs later today for new years. I canât have you bleeding through your shirt during the party. It might be a little shocking for him.â I spoke, lifting myself up on the counter to reach the cupboard with the medical supplies.
âYou mean that I beat people up for a hobby? Or that I have a huge gash across my body?â He asked sarcastically. I rolled my eyes.
âProbably both.â I said, bringing down the needed supplies and closing the cupboard. I walked back over to him on the couch. He started to lean up again but I pushed him back down.
âDonât move.â I said firmly, setting the bandages and alcohol to the side. He smirked.
âYes maâam.â
I smiled and shook my head in annoyance. I sat back down on his thighs, straddling him as I picked up the alcohol and the two new washcloths I brought.
âOpenâ I said, bringing one cloth up to his mouth.
âHm. Usually itâs me saying that to you.â He says, cocking his head to the side and winking before opening his mouth. I blushed, feigning annoyance. I knew he could feel my heart beat pick up, and he laughed as I put the cloth in his mouth.
âYouâre gonna want to stop being a smart ass and bite down on that. This is gonna hurt.â I said, opening the bottle of alcohol and pouring it on the other clean cloth. He started to mumble a response before I pressed the cloth to the cut.
He groaned, biting down on the cloth as his hands shot to my waist. His grip was unrelenting as I dabbed the entire cut with the alcohol-infused cloth. He shifted uncomfortably below me after every contact. My face scrunched with sympathy as I pushed the cloth down a little harder, trying to clean around the wound as well.
âI know Iâm sorryâ I said as his nails dug into my waist, most likely leaving a bruise.
Finally, I had finished cleaning the entire cut. I put the dirty cloth with the other, getting the bandage and unwrapping it before placing gauze and then the bandage over the cut. Mattâs chest was still rising up and down dramatically, but at a lower speed than before. I let out a breath before I took the cloth from his mouth and tossed it with the others.
âAll done.â I said, leaning back and placing my hands on his knees. His hair was messy, his mouth a little swollen from the cut. His eyes were looking off into the distance, and I knew he was listening to how I felt. I waited a second for both of us to catch our breath.
I was going to ease up and go back to bed, sleeping away the events of this early morning. Then, I looked down to his still-exposed chest. His black shirt stayed where it was supposed to the entire time, now serving as a tease.
Which I fell for.
I sat up straight, leaning forward and grabbing the shirt, lifting it the rest of the way up. Itâs like he read my mind- instantly lifting his hands over his head and helping me take it off. He threw his shirt over his shoulder, his hands bringing me in by the back of my neck. The kiss was sloppy, needy, and fast. His hands roamed my body, wrapping around my back to rest on my shoulders. He pulled me down onto him, grinding his hips up. We both pulled away from the kiss to moan from the friction. I stared at his lips as he unwrapped his hands from my back to lift my shirt over my head. He tossed it somewhere in the room before wrapping an arm around my waist. The other hand went to my inner thigh, rubbing circles with his thumb as he got closer and closer to where I wanted.
He brought me against his chest, his mouth going to my neck. I tilted my neck to give him better access as he left open-mouthed kisses all over my shoulder and neck. I got impatient, reaching between us to grab his hand and put it where I wanted it. He bit my shoulder, making me moan in response.
âNeedy little thing.â He said, his voice deep and rough.
I opened my eyes, looking at the ceiling as my mouth stayed open. I panted, Matt going back to leaving hickeys on my neck and starting to rub circles against me through my shorts.
âWeâll see whoâs needy.â I replied, moving my hand to slip into his pants and palm him through his boxers. He lifted his mouth from my neck, gasping as his hips stuttered. His hand stopped moving against me as his eyes shut from pleasure, letting out a groan as I continued to move my hand.
âMissed you so much.â He breathed, pulling me by my neck to rest his forehead against my own. He gave me a quick kiss and moaned into my mouth, my hand continuing at the same speed. âHad to come back to you. Will always come back to you.â He panted, brushing the hair from my face and kissing my lips, then the corner of my mouth. He kissed my cheek, my forehead, then found his way back to my lips. I pushed myself against him, putting my all into the kiss. He winced as I leaned on him.
I immediately sat up, my hands untangling themselves from him. He opened his eyes, trying to move with me before I put a hand to his chest to push him back.
âFuck, Matt, Iâm so sor-â
âDo it again.â He breathed, sitting up to be face to face with me. I hesitated, looking at him and wondering if I misheard him.
âYou heard me. Do it again.â He whispered. I smirked. How could I say no?

My eyes squinted in reaction to the searing red superlaser being blasted across the galaxy, right in front of the ship. Towards the Hosnian system. I trusted General Hux to see to the announcement of the weapon, saying I had more important matters to tend to.
As I now watch the laser from my quarters in the Destroyer, I canât bear to watch. I had lied about having more important matters, instead being too overwhelmed by the strange feeling of regret to be able to announce the weapon myself. A decision Iâd made just weeks prior, now making me sick to my stomach as I watch it happen in front of me. I couldnât look. I turn my back to the laser, my gaze going to the ground as my heart beats in my chest. The red glare hits every object in the room, forcing me to be surrounded by it. I shut my eyes, my breathing getting faster and faster. The buzzing in my head gets louder as I try, and fail, to think of anything else.
The mantle feels tight around my neck. My heart feels like it might burst from my chest, beating so loud Iâm sure the entire galaxy can hear. I feel trapped. Constricted against these robes, a prisoner of my mind as my head gets louder and louder. I canât distinguish the Force from my thoughts, hearing them all nonetheless.
Youâre weak.
Youâre a terrible leader, leading the First Order to their doom.
My hands shoot up to my ears, covering them in hopes to cease the voices. It doesnât work.
Everyone can see it.
They can see the pull you feel. The pull towards the light.
Youâll be dead before you know it.
I am pulled to my knees as the last voice echoes throughout my head.
What was a painful race of my heart and a seemingly never-ending stream of voices in my head became an eerie silence in a matter of seconds. Nothing, not even the steady humming of the hull was able to ground me. Even my heart seemed to silence for a second, waiting for something, anything, to happen.
I slowly let out a breath, opening my eyes to see the lack of red reflected in my quarters. I turn my head, seeing the galaxy fly by through the entirely see-through wall as we jump into hyperspace. I inhale sharply as I start to feel air get returned to my lungs. I stay on my knees, panting and trying to ground myself. I donât focus on anything besides my breath. Time is a far away concept as I concentrate. Breathe, breathe, breathe. The focus helps in silencing the voices, of not worrying over the past or future. The ship coming out of hyperspace brings me back to the present.
I stand to my feet, adjusting the mantle that wraps around my neck in my reflection against the dark walls of my quarters.
Every day the invisible tether I have to the light side tugs harder. I was the one who gave the order to shoot the laser. It was my idea. My weapon. Stars, I even convinced all of my inferiors of the benefits to come from it.
âThis would open doors to finding and destroying the Resistance like never before.â
âThis opportunity has practically fallen into our lap, giving us a chance at extinguishing the forever dying flame that is the Resistance.â
âI donât need to convince anyone that this is for the greater good of the First Order. What I say should never be questioned. See to it that this order is carried out immediately.â
The recollection of my own words bring a bitter taste in my mouth. The leader who said that, the leader of the First Order, seems so foreign to me now. I feel like a fraud. One who will be snuffed out any day now. I was so confident in my decision to fire that weapon. Yet, seeing that laser shooting towards those planets made me sick to my stomach. I still felt queasy. Disgusted with myself. I hated this feeling.
I take one last breath before gathering myself. We were set to land at the destination soon, and any reserves I had about what I needed to do had to be completely wiped from my face. Iâd grown accustomed to being the face of the First Order. Today it would be the same. A devoted and dutiful Supreme Leader. I raise my chin, making sure not a hair is out of place as I push my shoulders back and walk out of the room.
---
I stepped out of the ship, looking around at the planet of Takodana. The sounds of screaming and blasters firing filled my ears, bodies dropping all along the battlefield. The First Order had been alerted that the Resistance were hiding here while the Hosnian system was wiped.
I hadnât planned to step off the ship at all. I told myself I was to stay and pertain to business on the Destroyer, but I felt that I had to come here instead. Something was waiting for me. I could feel it in the air.
I could see the black robes of Kylo Ren disappear into the forest, following the girl he was looking for. I internally rolled my eyes, hearing his suffocating thoughts of redemption and expectations from all the way here on the ship. The Force radiated from the forest at high levels. I knew I should have been paying attention to it- the raw, untapped power that waited. Ren could handle it for now.
My eyes scanned over the fires that burned all around the battlefield, the heat from the flames caressing my rapidly beating heart. I could feel the heat calming me. Fire had always brought me back to myself. At least, the myself I once knew.
The invisible thread began pulling me in every direction. It was here, whatever was pulling me. I just needed to find it.
âTraitor!â
My head snapped to the left, seeing a stormtrooper turn on his riot baton, taunting his opponent with it. He started to the right, slowly circling him. My eyes idly drifted to his opponent. As soon as I looked at him, a low buzz started in my chest.
He was holding a lightsaber. He was force sensitive, though I could tell he was unaware of that as I watched him start to fight. He began swinging the lightsaber at his opponent, over and over again. He was sloppy. Clumsy.
But determined.
Something felt familiar with him. Like Iâd seen him before. I thought back to what the stormtrooper had called him. Traitor. He must have been a trooper as well. A member of the First Order, abandoning the duties he had been born into for what he felt was right. For what made him proud. Happy. He was fighting for it, for his newfound family- the Resistance. His determination was unwavering. It was almost inspiring.
I put a stop to my thoughts. I wasnât here for him. The thread continued to pull me every which way, like a balloon ribbon tied around my neck.
The amusement from watching the fight that had started to form on my face was disrupted as the troopers in the battlefield stopped suddenly. Everyone, even the Resistance fighters, slowly stopped fighting and turned. The stormtroopers pointed their weapons into the distance, across the water. The shadow stormtroopers that surrounded me raised their guns as well, pointing it to my right. My brows furrowed as my head shot to the low whoosh-ing sound reflecting off the water. I brought my hands up, pulling my hood down to look into the sky. Suddenly, a number of fighter jets appeared from the clouds. I quickly counted them, internally groaning in annoyance. I counted eleven fighters speeding towards us. Our own First Order jets launched immediately and went straight at them, the sound of their blasters shooting each other echoing through the sky. A shot from the main Resistance jetâs blaster hit one of our own, sending them to the ground. It crashed into the dirt, causing everyone within a mile radius of the shoreline to get thrown to the ground. I looked up, following the ship with interest as the shadow troopers began to shoot at the sky.
My gaze switched from the ship to the battling that resumed once again on the ground. The pulling was insistent now, making my heart race and my breathing pick up. Sweat lightly formed at my brow as I frantically searched for the cause.
My head started to pound, the thread pulling me almost off my feet. My gaze flew to the sky- from ship to ship, only feeling the pull towards the ship causing the most damage to our fleet. The main fighter jet pulled up, shooting at every First Order ship they could see. I couldnât take my eyes off of it.
One. Two. Three. Four. Five⌠I counted a total of ten of our own ships taken down by this one pilot.
PilotâŚ.
Pilot.
My head raced with recollection, trying to remember why that word was so important. I heard shouts from the Resistance on the battlefield.
âYeah! Thatâs what Iâm talking about!â
âNice, Commander Dameron!â
Dameron. Poe Dameron.
My face paled. The captive that Ren brought to my ship weeks prior. Why was he here? Why was there a thread between us? He wasnât force sensitive. I would have known, I would have felt something. Why did I feel this pull? Heâd done something to me. I donât know how, I donât know when. He had to have done this. My breathing escalated with every thought. The fires surrounding me began to grow and simmer with my breathing. The shadow troopers took a faltering step back, but remained at my side.
The rage that I thought had started to become dormant grew inside me. What did he do to me? Has he been the one making me feel this way the entire time? My hesitancy towards the evil of the First Order- had it all been a part of his plan? I didnât know any logical reason as to how or why he would do this, all I knew was that he would pay for it.
âGet me a jet.â I said, talking through my teeth. Two troopers immediately left my side, running to the side of the ship to retrieve my fighter jet. My hands went up to my neck, untying the mantle that had become a bother. A shadow trooperâs hands shot out to retrieve it before it hit the ground as my eyes remained on the jet, following it. My gaze didnât falter as my hands went back to rest at my sides. My right hand tapped twice on my leg, bringing a slight comfort as I made contact with the dagger I always kept in a halter strapped to my thigh. I was calm compared to earlier, when I first found out where the buzzing was coming from. Instead, I was enraged. Deep down, I was ecstatic that I found myself still capable of this amount of hatred. The silent, calm level of external wrath I had perfected throughout my life. The very thing that helped me in my training and leading of the Dark Side. I held back my smirk.
â
I closed the bridge of the jet, sitting down as I gently ran my hand across the controls. âMissed you.â I whispered, smiling to myself as the memories of my last time in the cockpit came to mind. Itâd been a while since I flew, having almost ruined my jet in the last mission I embarked on. I remember it like it was yesterday. It was the first time I had ever felt any pull or calling away from the Dark Side. I immediately joined the troops leaving the ship. I couldnât remember who we were attacking, or why. I just wanted to kill. And I did.
I killed every last one of the enemies that day. Even with my jetâs engine failing, and a missing fighter wing from crashing head on into one of the opposing jets- I wanted them all. It satisfied me then. Soothed the worry. Every drop of blood I spill helps me keep a tiny bit of my sanity. This thought encouraged me to put an end to that pilot.
I strapped myself into the jet. I turned the fighter on, switching my comms over to the general channel- wanting to see if they were using it. As I switched it on, overlapping talking filled the cockpit at once. I couldnât recognize or feign interest over any one voice or conversation, so I kept the volume low as I finished preparing the fighter to join the battle.
I took off from the ground, my head braced against the headrest as I put the fighter into its fastest speed. I started shooting at every jet I saw. The entire First Order air fleet had been wiped, and the Resistance fighter jets had started to turn around to head back. I switched to the local comms connected to my ship.
âPull the ground troops back. Weâre outnumbered. Iâm going to send the Resistance a little parting gift. Standby for further instruction.â I said, racing after the closest Resistance jet. I waited for confirmation.
âRight away, Supreme Leader. The troops are now aboard the ship. Waiting for further instruction.â Huxâs voice came through the comms. I switched back over to general chat, getting comfortable in my seat as I listened to the pilots.
âNice job pilots. We got them right where we wanted. Letâs head home.â
Dameronâs voice came through the radio, surrounding me in my ship. My stomach felt queasy as I uncomfortably shifted in my seat. His voice brought an emotion out of me I couldnât place. I wanted to get rid of it.
The cheers and yells of celebration began and ended as I fired my first shot. It hit the center of the jet, bursting the entire fighter into flames and sending it into the water below. Sounds of confusion and shock followed as they turned around to find where it came from. I focused all my concentration on my shots. Dameronâs fighter was the farthest one in the bunch. I was going to get to him.
I maneuvered the fighter to the sides, taking out two more ships before they finally started to fire back. I turned the ship on its sides, barrelling around them and over them as I took them out one by one. Screams started to relay through the comms, cutting out as their ships hit the water. My determination was unwavering.
âItâs a First Order jet. Itâs behind us, theyâre taking out the entire flee-â
âCommander, theyâre too fast! We canât land a hit, we have to-â
Both calls were cut short as I hit another. I was flying everywhere, diving towards the ocean and pulling up just before I went under. Flying straight up and going backwards, circling the jet to fire at them from behind. I looked for the fighter with the thick black stripe across its navel. My eyes roamed the sky as I took out the last fighter. It was only him left. So where was he?
I turned the ship around, staring out in the direction they tried to leave. Had he left his fleet behind? I smirked in amusement. Iâd taken out all of his partners. All of his friends, now sinking to the bottom of the ocean. And heâd left them behind in fear.
I turned around to head back to my ship. I had a split second before the shot hit me.
The ship with the black stripe was directly in front of me, preventing me from going towards the shore. As soon as I turned he fired at me. I reacted quickly, pulling the wheel as fast as I possibly could. I dodged just in time, the laser grazing the side of my jet. Not enough damage to hurt anything.
My smirk faltered slightly, before I realized I had him right where I wanted him. I could feel the hatred in his heart, see the sadness in his eyes. The revenge he sought.
Now things were getting exciting.
I swung the fighter to the right, shooting at his wing. He pulled his ship up in time, going towards the sky before pulling it back and trying to circle behind me.
I spun the wheel, spinning my fighter as I flew away, dodging the relentless lasers he sent after me. I shot down until my wing barely touched the water. He followed right behind me, waiting until I lined up for his shot. I flew from side to side, not staying still long enough for him to get the shot. I finally pulled up, turning around to face his jet as I waited in mid air. My hands stayed on the lasers, ready to react in half a second. His jet followed suit, coming to a stop across from mine to look at me. He was panting, out of breath. Out of control. I turned the volume on the comms up, pulling the mic to me as I spoke through it.
âCommander Dameron.â I said in an accusing tone.
I heard the sharp intake of breath as he registered my voice. He hesitated, his hands lifting off the controls completely. As if he found something in my voice. Perhaps something worth saving- as he had no intention of shooting at me despite my executing of his partners.
His voice came through the comms, raspy and lacking any expected aggression.
âYou. The supreme lea-â
I took his hesitation as an opening, firing a laser at his ship. Out of impulse. I held my breath as I watched it. Instead of hitting the cockpit, where I thought I aimed, it hit his left wing. The comms cut out as his ship faltered down, trying to stay in the air. He struggled with bringing it up.
I guess I missed.
âLet the Resistance know that this minor setback doesnât hinder the strength of the First Order. See to it that the state of your allies are reported back as well.â I said, glancing down at the sea below us. He had a look of distraught on his face, glancing between his controls- which he frantically pressed, trying to stabilize his ship- and my own eyes. I opened my mouth, my eyes wavering with more emotion than I anticipated before I spoke again.
