Taxonomy of a Hug (Destiel)
I have to confess something - I didn’t like that hug between Dean and Cas all that much. I never do like those hugs very much. And the thing is, I don’t know why. I really don’t. They just leave me -
And then tonight I was scrolling through tumblr and I saw these gifs -
- and it wasn’t so much a lightbulb turning on inside my head, but a bloody spaceship pinning me under a cone of white light.
Because, I don’t know, maybe we’ve discussed this before, but what always, always irks me about those hugs is how reluctant Dean is. The little eye roll, the embarrassed half smile, the Alright, that’s enough eyebrow tilt.
And, yes, Mary was there, but also - what struck me about that Sherlock gif is that we seem to have this more and more - the well-established TV trope ‘odd couple’ is now often rewritten as a relationship between two characters who fit a set of precise parameters: the extrovert one, who’s comfortable around people and leads a ‘normal’ life, and the introvert one, who - more and more - is probably somewhere on the autistic spectrum and is a sort of genius but has trouble with the simplest human things.
