Itβs crazy and fucked up that being yourself is actually the solution.
Itβs like. When I was told to βjust be yourselfβ as a kid I thought it was a passive thing. Like oh easy I just have to sit here and be myself. but the reason so many people think that βbeing yourselfβ is bullshit advice is because you actually have to make active choices to do this and it WILL make your life way more fun. You have to wear t-shirts of bands that were popular ten years ago because you like them. You have to do your hair in a way that you find cute or comfortable even if itβs βso ninetiesβ. If your friend says a food you enjoy is gross to them, you canβt be afraid to admit you casually disagree. You have to do hobbies that youβre interested in even if youβre bad at them and you cant feel like you have to get good at something before you tell people itβs an activity you do. You have to read manga and comic books in public and get piercings your relatives think are unattractive. You donβt have to tell people you dislike that you dislike them, but you donβt have to give them your time and attention either. You have to rewatch that kids show youβre nostalgic for even if youβre in your 30s. You have to change your name if you hate it, even if only a few close friends can know. You have to get fun girly drinks at the bar. You have to order hot chocolate when you donβt like coffee and black coffee when you donβt like sweet things. I am still bad at practicing this but it is the only way to make it all tolerable.
Legitimately though -- this. Absolutely this. I'm so tired of seeing people say "I wish low rise jeans would come back into fashion, i miss wearing them!" -- Just wear them. If you like something, wear it. Don't worry about if it's cringe, or not in fashion, or weird -- if it makes you happy and doesn't hurt anybody in the process, just do it and enjoy it. Life is too short to worry about what other people think, and it took me 33 years to figure that shit out.
being loved by me is a privilege because i will literally love you with everything in me.
Finally now that the comic is fully public on comicfury, I get to share it with all of you here, too <3

Types of brain fog:
Brain is primordial sludge & you are drowning in it
U are a ghost and nothing is real
Mental equivalent of attempting to stream some high-res video game when all you have is dial-up
The thing you want to articulate is *right there* but you're just scrabbling at it like a cat continually failing to catch the bird on the other side of the window
The Void

writing advice from your friendly neighborhood possessor of a bachelorβs degree in creative writing:
you donβt have to write the story in order. donβt wait to write a scene or a line you are excited about thatβs toward the end. write it first. write down bits of dialogue that come to you. donβt be afraid to spin a story like some kinda bizarre quilt, plucking here and there, pulling together edges where they fit best.
donβt write what you know in the ways that they tell you. write what you want to know or what you imagine you could know if you were someone else and lived somewhere else and had entirely different problems and traumas. write like you know even though you donβt. add little grounding details that you do know so maybe theyβll believe you.
break more rules than that. use adverbs and adjectives and metaphors. use said or use alternatives to said that make writing professors grimace. learn the rules and defiantly crush them. openly and viscerally.
donβt be afraid to skip boring parts. condense them to one line. donβt want to describe how they get back from the club or what exactly was said in their discussion or get stuck on a scene that feels like slogging through a swamp of very boring things happening? thatβs one sentence now, neatly described and then carry on to the fun parts.
when thereβs a lot of dialogue, a lot of people donβt even read the bit that comes after the end quotes, donβt worry. theyβve already jumped to the next line. donβt be afraid to completely drop everything after the quotes and just roll with nakey dialogue. it is very freeing and also fuck hemingway, you can do better that that.
donβt stop asking what if. donβt approach writing like βwell what would make a good story, how do i give these characters conflict, how do i make some grand statement about human nature here that connects to this other author and this other dead poet and is very cleverβ just ask what if and ask it again.
donβt be afraid to be derivative. all writing is derivative. this idea that we gotta be wholly original is very very new in the scheme of human writing. take anotherβs work and make it your own and ask what if about it. hell, write fanfiction and have a good time with it. those characters are yours now, authorβs intention be damned. kill that author. you have stories to tell.
the line between poetry and prose is very very thin to the point of not mattering. donβt ever tell me βi canβt write poetryβ when you hand me a paragraph from a story that absolutely sings with the way the words fit together. banish your assumption of what poetry is and write it. donβt tell me you donβt βget poetryβ. some part of you does and always has. write poetry.
just write. or if not write, take notes. or if not take notes, then read things that inspire you. or if not read (my brain is too fast most days for reading), just let your brain wander. if your brain wanders too far and gets lost, you might find something worth writing there.
itβs ok not to write. not to be writing. not to love writing anymore. itβs ok to have loved it so dearly and used words and stories to survive for so long, then to have that leak away. itβs ok if it was stolen from you by professors, by sharp words from peers, by reading lists and ways you were told you were meant to feel, by public readings and workshops, by one on one meetings with men who told you too late they should have done better by you and your writing, by the fear of a future spent networking and churning and emailing and preening and never writing, not the ways you wanted to. or if you just stopped writing. or if you never started. itβs ok not to write.
and then, itβs ok to start again
god what a post to happen upon years later that i wrote just six months before i started writing again in earnest. since 2019 iβve written over 1 million words after not writing for years post-college. all of that on ao3 but
I base Bell and Leo off of RedM characters, fun fact! Here's how I draw them as humans and how they look in game.
One of the most dangerous things in the world is not being able to say no to people because you don't want to upset them or dissapoint them. This will completely ruin your life in every way possible, at work, in your private life, your sex life and your friendships. It's a way of removing your own consent in your own decisions and go against your wishes, it is always a crime against yourself. Let yourself have a say. Upsetting people is better than traumatizing yourself.

And look who came crawling back, I know! Iβve not used Tumblr in a hot minuet. Hi everyone
If you are polite and courteous, the spirits will kindly agree to take a picture for you - and other spooky arts I drew this year >:) Most of the arts are taking place in Heather's world, including the gambling scene (don't look under the table...) INFO ABOUT THE CHARACTERS AND SETTING IS HERE The last art is another awkward monster art and you can find the backstory here Previous spooky & Heather's world art post is here (you can see some recurring characters throughout the art) More Mari Lwyd (who is a Welsh spirit and is being a "crossover" in my art) is here P.S. - bonus points to you if you can find all the hidden frogs πΈ
