call me cynic or loony; i'm both | writeblr | budding novelist | professional procrastinator | INTP & Ravenclaw | 18 she/her | current WIP: Next to Nothing
Many thanks to @anomaly00 for this fantastic tag game!
So, this is from a side story I'm working on prematurely titled Running 'Round Puddles:
"Thanks, Ives," Emmerson says, and I nod as I shut the door, burying my face in my pillow and groaning. I can't do this, but I can tolerate it...but I really can't. The cleaning chute screams right on time as I pass it, rushing to the couch and chunking the pillows and blanket onto it, following them with an exasperated sigh.
Literally, this is my favorite tag game. Have fun tagged!
Let's see... Marci would probably be in Ravenclaw because she is literally the absent-minded professor of NtN. Jess would definitely be in Gryffindor, just because he has no sense of what not to do (questionable bravery). Kidd would surprisingly be in Hufflepuff; even though she hates everyone, she will care for them regardless. Martin would definitely be in Hufflepuff, too, since he's the embodiment of kind gestures.
i am really late on this response due to some personal issues, but thank you so much to the lovely @sundaynightnovels for this tag.
here's my crack at this tag game :)
ONE ~ name
cynic, though i truly am no cynic and hold no critical bone in my body. new friends, please do not be deterred.
TWO ~ birthday
jan. 11. right at the start of a new year so my forgetful self remembers.
THREE ~ zodiac sign
i'm not much into zodiacs and such, but i am a capricorn, and my dearest friend tells me i pretty much fill the bill for a typical capricorn so hopefully it's all good things.
FOUR ~ height
5'4" and i am in denial. i am taller than my younger, 5'8" sister. i have to be taller. please let me be taller.
FIVE ~ hobbies
let's see...baking, gardening, video games, watching cooking shows, monopoly (yikes), but most of all art. i love my art classes and all of my compositions are my babies.
SIX ~ favorite colors
ooo, i'm involuntarily obsessed with all shades of blue. i will literally walk into a store and buy a pair of blue shorts that look identical to the other ten blue shorts i have and not even blink an eye.
SEVEN ~ favorite books
The Night Circus and Six of Crows definitely.
EIGHT ~ last song i listened to
Love of My Life by Queen. thank you music documentaries for getting me reobsessed with queen and elton john.
NINE ~ last film i watched
i binge watched a season of kid's baking championship yesterday...does that count?
TEN ~ inspiration for muse
literally anything that gets my mind to stop buzzing. it usually leads to a week-long obsession over the inspiration as i replay the moment thousands of times in my head.
ELEVEN ~ dream job
two ridiculous words: nascar racer. let's just say i am not the nicest driver on the roads and many a-curve have my tire marks
TWELVE ~ meaning behind your url
although i am not a cynic, i am quite loony, as my dear friends constantly remind me. loony and proud.
enjoy this fun tag game, friends :) @sanguinewritings @glasskaleidoscopes @anomaly00 @writingfyis @orphicodysseywrites @undiscovered-inc @writersturmoil @velvetlighthouse
ahhh, okay so my wip Next to Nothing is about an ordinary statistician trying to escape mundane life, and this leads to her working for a crazy maniac of a magician. i honestly get to excited to write about it because i've fallen in love with my characters (oops), and i love writing their sarcastic/endearing/funny relationships they have with each other :) p.s. your blog is incredible; I love what you're doing
Ahhh that sounds like so much fun! And as a fan of classic Holmes, that description reminds me so much of the Holmes-Watson dynamic, which is a dynamic that I LOVE no matter how itās expressed. The sort of banter and exasperation despite mutual appreciation... Thatās always really fun to write!
(And thank you so much!!! I basically just do what I like and hope others enjoy it, too. cx))
Another tag game thanks to the lovely @glasskaleidoscopes <3 Here goes!
Iām answering the questions for my current WIP, Next to NothingĀ :)
Rules - answer the 11 questions at the end of this post, write 11 questions of your own, and tag 11 people.
What do you do when you need to think of writing ideas?
When Iām in the need for ideas, I honestly wait until itās the middle of the night, put on my favorite music, and just let them come to me.Ā
Do you know how your WIP ends? Or are you figuring it out along the way?
I kind of know how Next to NothingĀ ends; Iām still waiting for the point in my story that makes me sayĀ āah! Hereās the ending plot twist I was looking for.ā
What do you struggle with the most when writing?
I struggle with word diversity. Iāll often get obsessed with using several words over and over again, the main culprits being glares, sighs, & shrugs.
How have your characters evolved over your WIP?
My main character, Marci, has gone from a bored, nonchalant woman to a nervous wreck, honestly, but by the end of the story sheās going to be better than ever, I promise.
Has one of your characters done something you never thought they would have done when you created them? If so, what?
One of my most cynical and critical characters, Kidd, is starting to let her guard down and actually be genuinely kind to people.
How far into your WIP(s) are you?
I am currently 26,000 words in, so a little over 1/3 of the way to finishing the first draft!
What inspired your current WIP(s)?
I always wondered what it would be like if I could control magic - and then I realized it would be total, maddening chaos, and I decided to write a story based off of that thought process.
What is your stance on using flashbacks in writing?
I personally donāt enjoy flashbacks (yikes)...it seems distracting unless theyāre very brief or truly necessary to the story.
Which genre is your least favorite?
Nonfiction. Biographies. Autobiographies. Not my thing in the slightest.
What is your worst writing-related habit?
My worst habit (which Iāve actually overcome as of recently) is going back to reread and edit every single wordĀ of the WIP Iām working on every time I open my laptop.
What bits (if any) of your personality have you added to your WIP?
Likely my tendency to become obsessive over the smallest of things, and the general vibe of social awkwardness.
My Qs:
What is your favorite place to write?
How many WIPs are you working on?
Who is your favorite WIP character and why?
Do you have a playlist for a character/WIP?
What do you consider to be your strongest arm in writing (dialogue, description, setting, etc.)?
What is the wackiest thing about your WIP(s)?
What are your thoughts about character deaths? Are they necessary, or can you do without?
How many WIPs have you started in total (unfinished, never finished, all WIPs)?
What is your favorite genre/subgenre?
Do you prefer sequels or prequels to a novel?
Who has been your biggest inspiration throughout your writing career (literally anyone, from a fictional character to an author youāve never met)?
These are so much fun! Thanks to @glasskaleidoscopes for the tag <3
Here are the last lines of Next to Nothing.
"Do...do I know you?" I ask hesitantly, the edge of panic creeping into my mind, shaming me for forgetting another thing, but the woman laughs, warm chuckles that shake away the chill in the air.
"No, but now you will. I'm Doctor Angeline Sallow," the woman says easily, and I stiffen as she waves her hand pleasantly. "I was hoping to run into you, Marceline. Would you mind grabbing some lunch with me?"
Now I'm off to write some more! I tag:
@writingfyis @velvetlighthouse @anomaly00 @undiscovered-inc @orphicodysseywrites @authorofferings (and @ anyone who sees this please fell free to join in and @ me in your post! i love finding news wips :))
reblog if youāre a writeblr, a prompt blog, an oc blog, a whump blog, a writing advice blog, literally anything relating to writing! letās make a follow train!
here's a quote from my wip: āThere,ā Jess says, exhausted, shutting the jarās lid and letting his head drop against the cabinets, and I notice the blood is no longer soaking his lab coat. He smiles, and I rest against the table, feeling quite and truly dead on the inside.
oh no. wait, wait, if i know this, does this mean iām affiliated with them now?? does not disclosing this means iām part of the crime????!!!well. i hope that they havenāt done, say, an autopsy on a living breathing body. and hope that the jarās contents isnāt something meaty and fleshy and a used-to-be body part. and i really hope that theĀ āiā beingĀ ātruly dead on the insideā is notĀ Ā a literal thing and is meant to be figurative of what has happened within the lab itself ā which is hopefully not something that⦠is damaging to a human body.i especially hope that i will not be incriminated in this crime, now that i know of it. and my followers too.ask me anything!
oh jeez, this is brilliant. it's actually kind of like anautopsy, except the person "dead on the inside" (figurative, fear not) just sawed off Jess' leg in a bizarre magical experiment, and he magicked his leg back together with a jar.
but fear not! you and your followers are safe, as both characters are not involved in illegal things :) thank you so much for this!
I got a little overzealous posting the first couple chapters of my WIP, and I havenāt even introduced myself!
Iām Sabrina, and I go by she/her pronouns!Ā
I write a lot of teen/new adult fiction. I usually focus on the romantic parts, but like to throw in some drama. I have trouble elaborating scenes sometimes, and am looking for feedback on my WIP, Glass Kaleidoscopes!Ā
I would love to get mixed in with the writeblr community, so reblog this post/follow me and Iāll follow you back! Thanks all <3
a writer who struggles with structure, accountability, and/or deadlines?
really excited about your WIP but also afraid you will never, ever finish it?Ā
in need of writing buddies to encourage you, yell at you, and make memes about your characters?
if you answered yes to all of the above,Ā this might be the network for you! (why am I talking like a salesperson, you ask? no clue.)Ā
WHAT THIS WILL BE:Ā
a small group (probably 5-10) of writers coming together to focus on finishing one of their WIPs. weāll track progress together, encourage each other through plot holes and writerās block, celebrate small victories, and maybe share small snippets of our work or potentially do critique swaps if thereās interest in that.Ā
primary communication will be through discordĀ
hopefully not a space to stress yourself outā writing books is HARD and requires a quadrillion tiny baby steps and we all gotta go at our own paceā but I think it would help me, and probably some other writers, to have a small group helping me stay on track and excited about my story. so Iād like to make that happen!

A cleptomaniac shapeshifter and music boi shapeshifter get lost in the woods, make a mess of local politics and jump through dimensions, not necessarily in that order.
Local scientist accidentally gets romantically involved in politics, pisses off a cult, and makes friends with a retired murderer. Not neccessarily in that order.
Two idiots in fantasy world must find out who murdering people, but instead of solving anything, hyperfixiate on one thing and ignore all other signs their wrong, intell itās too late.
Jess Braidel | 37 | master mage | character in Next to Nothing
There hasnāt been anyone who takes the phraseĀ ādo it for scienceā more seriously than the mage Jess Braidel. Ever the optimist and always the hermit, Jess spends his days happily locked in his laboratory, dabbling in the fine arts of blood magic and inanimate enchantments while burning the books his personal library, Marceline Graves, memorizes to keep all magical knowledge safe. Heās not out to conquer the world on a grand quest, but if science calls him to take such a path, you can bet Jess is already on it.
Hey you guys :) Iāve decided to post an excerpt of my current WIP, Next to Nothing, as a teaser. I hope you all enjoy!

āSo,ā Martin starts, taking a swig of beer as I draw circles in the condensation of my glass, āyouāre obviously pissed.ā
āMy job. I hate it.ā Martin hums pleasantly.
āIs that why youāreā¦weird?ā he asks, gesturing to me with his beer, and my eyes float over to the old television.
āIām always weird,ā I reply as players skate around the rink, slamming into each other. āYouāve pointed it out one hundred and twenty-two times since we met.ā
āSmartass. Well, hereās something Iāve never pointed out.ā Martin taps his beer glass against mine. āYou havenāt touched your beer.ā I hum absently, blocking earlier images of Jess and his mangled, bloody leg by counting the bubbles in the beer. Before Martin picked me up from outside of Jessā lab, I cried and shed all of every emotion I felt, and now I feel empty; itās a strange sense of relief, but Iām unable to grasp on to anything concrete, my mind floating more than conversating.
āI donāt like drinking,ā I finally say, pushing the glass towards Martin as he empties his. He gives me a questioning look despite grabbing the beer, and I put my elbow on the table, resting my cheek in my hand.
āWell, Iām technically still having a drink with you,ā Martin starts, waving for the bartender, āso Iām satisfied. May I have aā¦an unsweet tea? Thanks.ā
āYouāre dieting me?ā I ask drily, and as he rushes to amend himself, as if dreading that he stepped on my fragile state of mind, I let myself laugh, a rasp and an emptiness wrapped around it. āAn unsweet tea is fine.ā A slow smile seeps onto Martinās face, and I snatch the beer from him impulsively, taking a burning drink with satisfaction as the blood, the bones, and the lovely job Iāve entangled myself in begins to drain from my mind.
