mae | 25 | she/her | bi/ace/arospec i write about human nature, societal failings, and consequences. my favorite genres are soft sci-fi, light fantasy, and spec genrebends. follow for writing, inspiration, tips, community, and more. [main wip || touched]
a sff writer makes a heroic return to her writeblr account after a year of relative inactivity! the audience gasps! a return!? after so long!? is that allowed!? but our heroine has no care for what is allowed! she scoffs in the face of mockery!
Hey everyone! I’m Mae Crowe (@touchingmadness)! Some of you might already know me, but most considering the upheaval in the Writeblr community recently... Well, most of you probably don’t. I’ve been on Writeblr for six years as of August 2022, but I’ve been relatively inactive for the past year due to senior year of college, thesis work, and job applications.
In the time I’ve been away, I have a new contemporary fantasy WIP in the second draft that I am excited to share, as well as three WIPs in planning stages that I’m hoping to share somewhere down the road. I am also looking for some writers and WIPs to follow, because how else do you make friends on here?
[Banner made using “Astrolava’s character creator!” picrew.]
More about me, my writing, and what I'm looking to follow below the cut. Signal boosts allowed and appreciated!
✦ About Me ✦
Again, I’m Mae Crowe (she/her). I’m 22 years old and a recent graduate with a degree in communication. In terms of hobbies, I enjoy reading, writing, cosplay, and being an utter nuisance about Star Trek. I’m biromantic-asexual, and a hopeless romantic who sadly only develops infrequent crushes and basically gets possessed by a clumsy, bumbling gentleman every time they do occur. Yes, that’s just as embarrassing as it sounds.
✦ My Writing ✦
Humanity ✦ Societal failings ✦ Consequences ✦ Hope in the dark
I don’t really limit myself to a particular genre, but I tend to favor science-fiction and fantasy. My themes are generally pretty consistent, and my storylines tend to revolve around a character’s introspection and self-actualization. Most of my work is either adult or NA due to the heavier themes I like to play with, as well as just preferring to write at least marginally older characters.
✦ Main WIP: Touched ✦
My current WIP is an NA contemporary fantasy novel about an adult “Chosen One” dealing with the realization that the organization she dedicated her childhood caused her incredible harm. At its core, it’s about how parents and authority fail us and moving past childhood trauma to build the life we want. It’s her journey of growing up, dual POV with her supposed-dead mortal enemy, and yes, of course they have a romantic arc, even if I consider the story’s focus to be on their individual development. But they’re bi4bi and ace4ace M/F, if that’s what it takes to sell someone. And the female lead is touch averse and it’s not treated as something to be fixed because I am Touch Averse and Bitter. :))))
(This is incredibly oversimplified, so let me know if you would like to be notified when the full introduction is released later this week.)
✦ Other WIPs ✦
I also have three projects that are in the planning stages that I might choose to share down the road. I can’t guarantee any of these will be formally released soon, but there’s a good chance they’ll be mentioned at least in passing.
Adult space opera. A crew of female and fem-presenting aliens go on a space road trip to ruin the wedding of the human playboy who toyed with them, building bonds with each other in the process.
Adult post-apocalyptic sci-fi. Severely wounded in a violent raid, an amnesiac man is taken in by the household of the legendary Eternal One, a mysterious and warped survivor from the Before Times.
NA contemp queer romance. A notorious flirt poses as her best friend’s boyfriend on a family vacation to help her avoid the fallout of a nasty breakup, causing hijinks and a gender crisis.
Again, I can’t guarantee that any of these will be formerly released, but if you’re interested in being alerted if/when any of them are posted, let me know.
✦ Looking For ✦
I’m looking for writers and WIPs to follow! If you’re active in the community, involved in events, or generally just share a lot (writing, tips, or whatever), I’d love to check out your blog! I likely won’t follow everyone, but I’m currently following practically no one... So...
Shenanigans, humor, absurdity, and/or permission to have fun
These aren’t the only things I read, just my favorites. The only thing I probably won’t consider at all is fanfiction, simply due to fic compatibility. Just let me know what you’re excited about sharing, I’d love to hear about it!
Feel free to introduce yourself or your work in the thread, in the tags, in asks, or in DMs. I’m really excited to get to know all of you!!!
Hi, I'm really not on Tumblr much anymore other than passive reblogging on my fandom account, and I've honestly found I prefer sharing my work in smaller, more intimate settings. Is anyone in the market for a writing/accountability buddy? I'm also okay with a small group if a few people are interested, but I'd probably cap out at about ten people at the absolute most.
I'd just really like to have one or a few people to share progress with, maybe do some scheduling simul-write sessions with, and bounce ideas off of.
I'm at the beginning of a new project, just starting my finalization of the outline and moving into early writing stages - I'd love to have someone at a similar stage of either planning or just starting. Also, 18+ only due to the content of my work. (But I obviously will not share the smuttier content without explicit, informed consent even if you are an adult. It's not a focus of the work, but it's present in places.)
More info on my project, my writing tendencies, and me personally below.
Quick overview of my project (ask for more):
Science-fantasy time loop setting inspired by ren faire
A genderqueer lady knight (POV), her first love/childhood friend who suffers from severe people pleasing and comphet, and all the people they either unfairly use and abuse over the story or who use and abuse THEM
Tragic corruption arc and morally questionable decisions
Character-driven and reflective
I'm not picky about what your story contains, really, but I'd love to meet other queer spec fic writers who are at least interested in genreblends and/or sci-fi and sci-fi elements. For my familiarity, if it matters, I read and write primarily character-driven sci-fi, fantasy, and spec fic genreblends. I don't interact with much contemporary fiction or stories that are primarily romance, but I do read some and would love to hear about yours! I'm just not necessarily the best person for feedback from an intended audience perspective 😅 I also don't generally interact with much YA
Other things about me, uhhh.... I'm 25, genderqueer, bi aroace, and a huge animanga fan whose other hobbies include sewing, model kits, and cosplay. I'm in the US Eastern time zone and may occasionally have weekends booked for both work and personal trips, as I travel for both. More of a night owl than an early riser.
Hi all, I haven't been on here in a while, but I was wondering if anyone could pass me some recs for a project I'm working on.
Does anyone have recs for older queer sci- and/or fantasy stories (novels, novellas, shorts, whatever)? I'm looking mostly for things that are pulp or pulp-adjacent in style, and I don't particularly care how "good" the queer rep is. "Bad" endings, consent issues, queerphobia, aged poorly things like that are fine for my purposes. Obviously I don't want exclusively that, but I'm trying to create as big of a list as possible and I want those included.
I'm even fine with situationally queer set-ups - aliens who don't match the gender binary, single sex and/or gender societies, rendered trans by body swap, etc. Similarly, if it's subtextual but is still regarded commonly as a queer text, I'll take it, just please let me know as I'll be handling those slightly differently.
I would prefer the main character (or if it's multi-pov, one of the main characters) to be queer. And it can be queer in the sense of any identity, I'm not looking for specific segments, and obviously I don't need them to declare themselves as queer using modern labels or even labels of the time.
I'll accept recs with publishing years up to the early 2000s, but I'm mostly looking for 80s and earlier if anyone has them. Google searches and static rec lists usually give me the same handful, and I'd love to find any that the internet is hiding from me.
If you don't have any, I'd still be really grateful if you pass this post on.
Do you think people who are virgin should write smut? I feel like most of them don’t even know what they’re writing and just write what they think sex is
the implication this ask suggests that people who write about murders, cannibalism, politics, magic, royalty au, sci-fi, wars, supernatural, time travel, medieval era, werewolves, vampires, mermaids or goblins must be murderers, cannibals, presidents, wizards, royalties, astronauts, ghost hunters, soldiers, time travelers, knights, werewolves, vampires, mermaids or goblins in real life is so funny to me
I have to say it. 'enemies to lovers' started going down the shitter when people began treating it like 'people who kind of annoy each other to lovers' ENEMIES to LOVERS is about if two girls FOR REAL want to KILL each other
and if i tear myself apart and reforge myself in a desperate bid for someone to choose me... would anyone mourn what i had destroyed? would that version of me be worth notice once out of reach? and which answer is more tragic?
#one weird counterintuitive aspect of being asexual #is that im more open to kinky or weird shit #im not HAVING kinky or weird sex it's all theoretical
Hey @rosierugosa I hope it’s okay that I stole your tags because YES.
Because sexual desire is so weird and alien to me, personally, I find myself more accepting of weird and alien sex: I’m definitely not a monsterfucker in that I don’t wanna fuck the monster, but I fully accept and respect all monsterfucking because hey, sex in general -- straight, gay, or otherwise! -- is already so weird to me. Wanting to fuck Chad McDude down the street is just as strange to me as wanting to fuck the mothman. So my attitude is...go for it, I guess! Here’s a water bottle.
Hi if anyone needs or wants to talk about anything - whether that'd venting or finding a distraction - please know my DMs are open and I'll pass out my discord if anyone wants it
You're exhausted, you're not recovered from your wounds, but you have to go and fight the latest threat anyway. You're the only one who can.
You disguise yourself, making yourself seem as small and ordinary and nonthreatening as possible, so that people don't recognize you, because the hero worship feels so uncomfortable.
Your sworn companions are the only ones who treat you remotely like a human, but even so, you can see the distance and fear in their eyes when you return to them soaked in blood.
You're used to hard travel, long days walking or riding, short nights sleeping in a bedroll on cold, damp ground, taking shifts to watch for threats.
The people in the city who take you for granted, laughing about how threats will never touch them, not with you to protect them.
Worse, the people who whisper behind your back about how you're not doing enough.
The smartest and most cunning of your companions has a plan in place to defeat you if you're ever corrupted into evil. You smile and nod, knowing it wouldn't work. You would crush all of them like ants under your boot. You suspect that your companion knows it, too.
The healing magic drains you, leaving you feeling like a hollow shell, but you have no choice but to use it. Healing your wounds the normal way would leave the city vulnerable for too long. You feel as if your body is barely stitched together by magic.
You must attend meetings and balls and diplomatic events, awkward in uncomfortable formal clothes. You're there as a weapon, as a threat, and everyone knows it.
Every two-bit villain and their lackeys wants to kill you. You can't go anywhere without the threat of assassins in the dark and poison in your food and drink.
You've nearly died so many times, and each time the threat of death is more of a relief. You don't want to think about what that means. If you die, everyone else will too.
Your sleep is full of nightmares of all the things you've seen and done. Even in sleep you can't get a respite from fighting.
screaming, crying, throwing up, as I force myself to write a story i'm very passionate about and love writing and have no obligation to write except that i want to
