Not that anyone asked but incase anyone was wondering how the suit worked im gonna explain it!

So the coca-cola polar bear costumes have been constructed as walk around costumes by the Jim Henson Creature Shop since 1993! This is what part of the inside looks like where you can see the wires that connect to the moniter and camera inside the suit so that the preformer can see whats in front of them.

You can also see the harness that supports the majority of the suit, especially the head of the suit, which is what we're most interested in.

Because the suit is made by the Henson Creature Shop, you can look up a simplified description of how the suit works and that its suitable for left handed and right handed people, but this doesnt really tell us much unless you're familiar with how the Henson Company tends to make walk around suits, and i think the best way to illustrate it is with Jim Hensons own drawing of Big Bird! One of the most famous walk around suits ever!

So one hand goes up and controls the head while the other controls the arm! This is also why when you see people preforming in walk around suits, you usually only see them gesturing with one arm at a time. The rig for the bears head attaching it to the harness is sturdy enough in this case that the preformer can even switch hands inside the suit if they need to!

The hand inside the head controls which way the bear is facing and how the head gestures, the thumb controls the jaw, and theres a spring/string mechanism attached to the fingers that controls the eyelids! The arms are simple mascot sleeves with supportive foam to keep arm changes from being noticed and also to shape up the arms and keep them from deforming during a preformance.

TLDR: one arm in bear face, one arm in bear arm.

I saw a few paragraphs about hagfish in the middle of an article and ofc thought of your blog... do you think this is good coverage or nah?

"The humble hagfish's threat response is to release a bundle of slime. The tiny threads binding the mucus together are quickly unravelled by the pull of the water, expanding to 10,000 times its size in just a few tenths of a second. Understandably, having your mouth and gills suddenly filled with mucus deters predators pretty effectively. And I mean filled with mucus. When a container full of hagfish spilled on a U.S. highway in 2017, they made enough slime to cover the entire road plus a nearby car. It’s so abundant, and so strong, that scientists are testing the fibers to weave more durable clothes — and bulletproof vests!

“But surely this is the only strange thing about hagfish?” I hear you ask, after a long pause while you try to process hagfish slime clothes. But I can offer no such reassurance. The hagfish’s teeth can eject from their mouth to grab food, and they eat by then pulling those teeth back inside. Also they’re prone to eating their prey inside out. And they sneeze. I could go on."

i think this is pretty good coverage! i have no problem with people saying 'hagfish are REALLY weird' because 1. they are 2. it's a value-neutral statement 3. that's part of what's so compelling about them, how different they are from anything else alive today. and they are indeed prodigious slimers, so even though it's not my personal area of focus i see why the sliminess is often spotlighted when discussing hagfish.

it's when people lay it on thick with statements like 'we wish we had never learned about this slimy monster from the bowels of hell' or

(the title of an article discussing how hagfish have the terrifying disturbing ability to...... absorb nutrients through their skin) that i start getting annoyed. i particularly dislike when the 'aaaa kill it with fire' response is triggered by their feeding habits. one exception, i can be gracious, i understand that a lot of people are unhappy about the fact that hagfish don't always wait for dying animals to expire before they start to feed, even though that behavior is hardly unique to hagfish. but treating scavenging an already dead thing as horrific is annoying. humans also eat dead things. many animals eat dead things, and the alternative of eating still-live things is, as mentioned, not popular. and who exactly is suffering when a scavenger feeds on a carcass? you would not like the ocean very much if there was no one eating the dead things! hatred and disgust at scavengers for scavenging really confuses me. the disgust response exists to protect you from getting sick from corpses, but do you know what else also protects you from getting sick from corpses? scavengers.

by the way they do indeed 'sneeze' (some scientists refer to it as 'nostril coughing'). sometimes this is part of desliming themselves, since they can get caught in and potentially suffocate in their own slime. they also do it in response to external environmental irritants. it's a reversal of the normal flow of respiration that forcefully expels water back out through their nostril, hopefully carrying any irritants or obstructions away with it. this behavior has been observed in both M. glutinosa and E. stoutii, so it seems likely all hagfish can do it. here's a paper on respiration in E. stoutii that includes some description of the behavior.

The vast majority of conservatives think of themselves as underdogs being repressed by the government/the elite, and they value personal freedom (specifically their personal freedom, they don’t care about other people). The will almost always agree with leftist points if you can find a way to blame the problem on their vague enemies (useful, since rich people are the root of most problems), and tie it back to their ability to say fuck everyone else. NEVER appeal to science, theory, logic, or human goodness. Make it seem as if you are a paranoid lunatic who trusts no one. They love it.
