Snape + Significant Moments (1/3)
āDONāTāā screamed Snape, and his face was suddenly demented, inhuman, as though he was in as much pain as the yelping, howling dog stuck in the burning house behind themāāCALL ME COWARD!ā
Harry as an adult likes to occasionally visit his grumpy boyfriend at his work and mess with him.

Do you think Snape suffered from depression? and if he did how did he deal with it?
1) Yes
2) Through sheer force of will/duty.
3) I honestly think that he would probably have committed suicide when he found out that Lily was dead if not for Dumbledore stepping in and pulling theĀ āyou have to live for her sonā thing. Ā Snape felt SO guilty for Lilyās death and the destruction of the happiness sheād found with her husband/child. Ā She was his only friend ever in his whole life. Ā To say he took it hard is an understatement.
4) Youāll notice that even though Snape is very intelligent and inventive/creative, he does very little with all of that ability. From everything we can tell, heās a kind of pathetic teacher whose life revolves around his job (and saving Harryās arse). He doesnāt do anything to improve Spinnerās End or change things around to remove the negative memories of his youth. Ā He doesnāt even seem to own anything of his own, save books. He also wears the same clothing (or just doesnāt really care about fashion/style so just owns a lot of the same stuff). He doesnāt take care of his appearance in general, either, beyond the basic hygiene expected of him in his job.
Can you imagine Snape going out for a nighttime stroll because he canāt sleep even though itās pouring rain, and as heās walking, impervious to the storm and nearly lost in thought, he finds this cat and he figures it must belong to one of the students and heās just thinking āthis is no weather for a cat to be out inā because the poor thing is soaking wet and probably freezing. So he picks it up, meaning to bring it inside, and as heās walking this cat just starts licking his hair like itās trying to groom him and Snapeās just like āGood Lord, cat! Who are you, my mother?ā but heās not really that upset and he brings that cat into the castle and leaves it by the nearest fireplace so it can warm up and find the student it belongs to.
Then YEARS later, long after heās become aware that Minerva is an animagus, heās just sitting at the staff table, eating breakfast or something, and just pauses with the spoon halfway to his mouth like āWait a minute. That wasnāt a studentās cat. That wasnāt a studentās cat at all.ā
Maybe a little dark question but, you said that Snape's will to live is very strong and I agree (e.g. in battles) and yet we see him suicidal at one point in the books. Do you think he was suicidal in general or was it just right after Lily dies? Do you think his strong will to live comes from his rough upbringing and experiences? Or does he sort of do it out of 'you ain't seen the last of me' spite (as he was nearly murdered by his school mates)?
Severus is suicidal without his Purpose.
He has a Purpose (protect Harry so that Lily didnāt die in vain). Once his purpose was fulfilled, I wouldnāt be surprised if he committed suicide if he hadnāt been killed by Nagini. The thing about his death is that Snape literally dies thinking that heās failed. Ā All those years, heās been working hard, doing his damnedest to survive, and right near the end before Voldemort can be defeated, he gets murdered without being able to do much to tip the scales in Harryās favor.
When he says to DumbledoreĀ āHas it occurred to you that I donāt want to do this anymore?ā heās not asking to leave his role as a spy and move to Australia. Heās talking about ending his life. The pain, the suffering- heās so worn down by the depression and the sheer utter shithole of his life that he just wants it to STOP FOREVER. He doesnāt have any hope. Ā Heās just a ball of spite and rage and bitterness that has grown so accustomed to surviving in the hellish landscape of his life that he doesnāt even really remember the reason he does it except when Dumbledore forces him to because all he wants is for it to END.
Sometimes I wonder if JKR really killed him off for the drama of it, or if she really just granted his dearest wish.
tbh I kind of have toĀ agree. See also: every time he applies for the DADA position, knowing as everyone does that nobody'sĀ had the job for more than a yearĀ for decades (and many suffering a rather dire fate).Ā
I donāt think Snape had any real shred of self-esteem or self-worth outside of his āusefulnessā (and I think Dumbledore cottoned onto that very quickly, or maybe just had an intuitive understanding of what itās like to live with crushing guilt and self-hatred and recognized it in SnapeĀ - āwhat use would that be to anyone?ā is what he saysĀ in response to Snape expressingĀ a desireĀ to die after Lilyās death).
So Snape basically hitched his wagon in its entirely to this idea of fighting for a cause outside himself - first as a Death Eater in Voldemortās service, trying to elevate himself out ofĀ his weaknessĀ and vulnerability, and out of theĀ social & economic gutter heād beenĀ born into, to make himself into something with worth, and that hope turned to dust pretty quickly Iād imagine, once he realized he was little more than a servant.
ThenĀ he wanted to save Lily (a woman who had not spoken to him in years, but as children,Ā was the only one who hadĀ treated him kindly), and when that failed, heĀ dedicated himself to preservingĀ what was left of Lilyās blood on Earth (Harry) - because he had no other motivation whatsoever. I donāt think he ever viewed his life as having a value on its own.
He was basically viewed as garbage his entire life - by his father first and foremost, and then as a half-blood inĀ the 1970ās Slytherin i.e. The House of Pureblood Superiority (something that changed after the war but at that time, letās be honest - thatās what it was) and held in suspicion if not outright loathing by those outside of Slytherin.
Is it any surprise if he internalized all of this? I donāt think anyone hated Snape as much as Snape hated Snape, . And plenty of people hated himĀ - he certainly wasnāt shy about giving plenty of people plenty of reasons to hate him, creating a sort of self-fulfilling cycle, thus confirming to him that he was nothing but contemptible and worthless.
Of course he was also prideful in some ways (about his abilities mostly - again, tying everything to āusefulnessā), but I donāt think he ever got to the point of feeling he had anyĀ inherent value as a human being.
(Iām oddlyĀ reminded of Mr. Nutt the orc, in Discworldās āUnseen Academicalsā constantly asking those around him, āDo I have worth?ā every time he does something useful,Ā and desperately trying to āearnā throughĀ acts & deedsĀ his right to just beĀ alive.)
You guys are killing me with this :(
