An old friend texted me and asked if I wanted to go for a run and for breakfast. I was down for the breakfast, but I didn’t want to do the run. Instead of being a normal human being and telling them I wasn’t interested, I panicked and texted back that they had the wrong number. Now I’m pretty sure I can never talk to this person again. Hi, I’m Phil and I’m still in my awkward phase.
A friend who makes you run is no friend, you did well! I’m Matthew and I can be your replacement friend, I promise to never take you on a run. Except maybe a run from Zombies cause those are fun.

Liz: It was so easy for Liz to just fall back into this. The way his lips felt, how his hand held her and felt good in her hair, she had missed this, she had missed him. When he pulled away she looked at him, nodding at his words. "I'm sorry," she began, "I'm sorry I slept with someone else and I'm sorry I've been such a brat but I got scared. I got scared because I was starting fall for you and now- now I see how stupid I was because I'm not falling for you anymore." She said taking a shameful breath. "I am way past falling- I'm in love with you." She admitted, not looking him in the eye.
Matthew: He winced slightly at the mention of the events that transpired, but Matthew knew Liz well enough to know that her making the trip all the way to him now meant it was important, and genuine. He could milk it a little longer, but he knew deep down he couldn't be upset at her forever. It took a lot of her to say all that, he knew. He let his hand drop to hers, squeezing reassuringly her fingers in between his. It was fine, or at least it would be. "That was a lot of words. You must be parched now. Lets get you inside, get you a glass of water."he joked, pulling her slowly inside his apartment, but with no true intention to head to the kitchen. The moment the door was closed, Matthew pinned the young woman against it, leaning down to capture her lips in hers again, gently. "I'm sorry, I didn't want to scare you. But I didn't want to share you either."

Liz: From the second she knocked to Matthew actually answering, so many thoughts went through her head. It seemed the like the longest time in the world. Liz was so use to lost and being on her own that the idea of being with someone terrified her. She had already met his parents - even if it wasn't meant to be - and things just seemed to be going way too fast. When he opened up the door she took in a breath at seeing him. Not knowing what to say she just placed her hands either side of his face and put her lips on his.
Matthew: His entire body went on autopilot for a moment, one hand snaking it's way around her waist to pull her to him, while the other tangled up in the long dark curls. On a regular basis he could barely resist her, now was even harder. When Matthew finally got his wits back, he pulled away slightly, holding her gaze, trying to figure out what was going on in Liz's brain. "No, you have to talk to me."

Liz: After talking things over with her friend, Liz had came to say outlays what she really had known all along. She was in love with Matthew. Part of her knew that and it was the reason that she ran. They had been mistaken as a couple and just laughed it off saying something ridiculous but she spent most of her time with him, told him things no one else knew and he made her really happy. Not to mention the sex was amazing, everything that a couple would want for. But she had to go and fuck everything up. Not speaking to him the past week had been awful. She didn't want it to be like that. Leave her apartment she drove to his place, not bothering to call because she knew he wouldn't answer. When she got to his door she knock quickly, hoping that he was in and that he wouldn't slam the door in her face.
Matthew: In his memories, they had never ever gone this long without talking, and it was much harder than Matthew had anticipated. Many times he had caught himself phone in hand ready to call, or driving closer and closer to her place, but he had more sense than that. He knew it wouldn't help any of them. He had laid the cards down, finally, telling Liz exactly what he was ready to admit he wanted for them. The next move was hers... and honestly taking a while. Was it possibly the actual end for them? It was a thought he tried very hard to keep at bay by keeping busy. He worked, or cooked, or anything to keep his mind off of it. It worked most of the time, and so well that when his dishwashing was interrupted by knocks, he didn,t even consider it could be her. But it was and Matthew hoped his surprise wasn't too apparent as he leaned against the door frame. "Yes?"

Liz took a step back when his voice got louder but she wasn’t going to back down. “How did I hurt you?” She yelled back at him. “And what the fuck did it matter if you saw him or not?” She added. “Last time I checked, we are not a couple. We are friends who have sex and that doesn’t stop us from having sex with whoever else.” She defended. “You said you couldn’t hang out with me and it was my birthday so I went to a bar and some guy bought be drinks and we came home. That’s the end of it. Why has this got you so uptight?” She asked, folding her arms and looking at him.
There was a lot more he could,ve said, a lot more he wanted to say. The words were right there at the tip of his tongue, ready to fall like a beligerent attack of air and sound. but Matthew stopped them. He stopped before saying something he’d regret. He beathed slowly, in and out, letting his temper die down, his eyes never leaving hers, full of disappointment, hurt and a bit of sadness. “If you take a minute to think about it, really, you’ll see you’re wrong on that.“ he calmly replied. “You’re not my friend. You haven’t been for a while.“ He reached up gently to push her hair behind her ear. “I get it, you decide, you do what you want, and you don’t want whatever you think “that” is or isn’t. So I’m gonna go. Because I do.“

Liz looked and Matthew and tried to understand what it was he was feeling. He was hard to read right now and that didn’t normally happen for Liz. He wasn’t jealous, was he? They weren’t in a relationship- he was free to sleep with who he wanted as well. Admittedly, the thought of him with someone else did hurt more than she wanted it too. Which is why she wanted to clear the slate, to sleep with someone else and get rid of the feelings she felt bubbling for him. Liz when to speak but was lost when he used her full name. “What?” She asked, anger in her tone. “Are you mad at me or something?” She called. “Because I am grown ass woman and I can do what I want, Matt.” She said, playing the opposite game and calling him but his nickname, something she never did.
Replying wasn’t smart, he knew it. He was lucid enough to know he wasn’t in his right mind. Jealousy, and mostly hurt, were clouding his judgment and the rational part of his brain told him he could do more bad than good. But Matthew also couldn’t just stand here and let her try to assuage her own conscience by making it his fault or something. “And you went and did it and I’m not stopping you. You make your own fucking, messed up decisions the way you want. That’s always been clear. You always did exactly what you wanted, knew exactly what you were doing. You knew I was coming this morning, you knew I’d see him. Guess what, you wanted to mess with me and hurt me, and you succeeded, congratulations.” he partly exploded, his voice raising to a level of loudness it had never reached before with her.
Are you in love?
I didn’t think so, but yes. Definitely. Wouldn’t reccomend it, though.

Part of Liz knew this was wrong, that it did feel like she was crossing a line or something but she had to remind herself and Matthew was just a friend. A friend who she had great sex with. Who she wanted to tell everything too. Who meant the world to her. But that didn’t mean that she was ready for that kinda commitment. She wasn’t ready, not after everything she had been through.
Liz buttoned up her shirt as she stood in front of Matthew. “What? Matthew, wait. He was just going and ‘ll be ready in like five minutes. I just lost track of time.” She explained. “Yeah, I’m leaving. I don’t wanna get in the middle of anything.” The guy chucked before grabbing his shirt and leaving. Liz nodded as he left. They both knew it was a one night thing and they didn’t even exchange names. “Give me a few minutes to get ready?” She asked, hoping the could just smooth over it.
Every second that passed irritated the man more and more. For someone usually so chill about everything, it was a feeling almost completely foreign to him. Everything was extremely annoying, from the speed at which Liz was buttoning up her shirt, to the lighting in the hall, and of course that stupid grin on the stupid face of that stupid random guy that Matthew itched to punch out. Noothing good would come out of this, he knew. So what if he decided to just go with it and still keep their plans? He couldn’t stop his brain rom picturing them both naked and the thought alone was so upsetting it physically hurt. “I can’t do this, Elizabeth.” He tried to appear nonchalant, tried t keep it all from errupting, but the use of her full name betrayed him. He couldn’t even remember one instance of calling her that... but he couldn’t stop picturing Mr. Whatshisface calling her Liz and it made his stomach churn again. “Not right now, not today not... whatever. Enjy your day, or something.” and he turned to walk away.

Things had been out of time for Liz. She had the week off work and the days just blended into one another. Liz never really celebrated her birthday but she had a lunch with Ari and Matthew wanted to do something so she thought she should take some time off. After speaking to Matthew, things felt different, it felt too serious. She wasn’t ready for that.
So, she got herself dolled up and headed out to the bar with one intention - getting someone back to her place. She needed a random hook up, she needed to remind herself that this was okay. Her and Matthew were not a couple, they were friends who had sex and she was allowed to hook up with whoever she wanted. It didn’t take long before she back in her own place with some guy whos name she had forgotten. At quarter to 8 she woke up with a jolt, rushing to get ready, remembering that Matthew would be here soon. She ran out of her room, fixing her shirt, when she heard her friend call her. “Hey, Matthew.” She said casually. “No, he was just getting ready to leave.”
Something in the lanky man just snapped suddenly. His brain couldn’t stop picturing this half naked dude and Liz and it didn’t sit well with him. “You know what? Lets skip it. I’m not hungry anymore.” he grumbled, annoyed. Mathew never before really thought of himself as an angry or jealous person, never really encountered these emotions. So he truly thought he was fine all this time with watherver that was between them. They never talked about dating or exclusivity or anything like that, but he also never felt the need to go be with anyone else. He thought she felt the same way, and she obviously didn’t.
He now realized that, subconsciously, all this time he had pretty much considered her his girlfriend. She was his closest friend in town, the one person he truly felt comfortable with, the one who knew him best, the first person he thought of in the morning, and usually the last on his mind before he fell asleep... and the sex was great. And to have his perception suddenly shift only to be smashed to the ground was a little too much to deal with. “I’m just... Yeah, I’ll call your or something.”

It was their ritual: middle of the week coffee and pancakes (usually Wednesday ro Thursday). Always at the same time, always at the same place. At 8am sharp he’d be knocking on Liz’s door and they’d be gone as fast as possible, wanting to be the 9am rush. At this point, Matthew couldn’t even remember when or how it started. It just was, and to be honest, it was one of the best part of his week every time.
He had a certain spring in hi step as he walked up to her door. Being so close to her birthday, he’d decided to make this week’s a little more special, with a few surprises here and there, starting by the bouquet of roses’ stems only. Right on time, he knocked and waited. And waited. And waited some more, which was unusual. As he was about to text to see where she was or if she was okay, the door finally opened. Instead of finding the brunette bombsell, Matthew was stunned silent a moment to find a half naked strange man under the threshold. “Um... Hi, I’m...” he stumbled on his words, stuck between shock, confusion and a bit of anger flaring up. “Liz?” he called out over the guy’s shoulder. “Is your friend joining us for brunch?”
