Reasons to boycott Nolan's The Odyssey (that I know of so far):

They shot in the illegally occupied Western Sahara as reported by Middle East Eye (thanks to @fuckyeahdavidandyonatan for bringing that up)

They dumped their props into a protected area of the Italian sea after shooting (thanks to @godslop for finding the article in English)

Zendaya wearing looted 3000 years old Iranian earrings for the premiere of the movie + having her stylist fly on a private jet just to get her a dress for the premiere in London

No Greek actors in a movie about Greek heritage

While people mentioned that Anne Hathaway was flown in to the set every day, apparently it was not on a private jet but on a helicopter that was being used anyway to fly in equipment.

None of these things are new in Hollywood or exclusive to the Odyssey, its director or its actors, but I do think we as audience should start holding Hollywood accountable when it disrespects our culture, heritage, environment, especially when it's movies that are this big and have a huge budged that would allow for more conscious choices.

listen it's not that I think epic the musical is a perfect adaption of the odyssey but it was an impressive passion project that knew what it wanted to be and knew what people gravitated to in the original work and it put significant effort into conveying this through its unique medium and tone to the point that hundreds of other people felt compelled to put effort into their own artistic interpretations of that version of the story. and that's really cool! and yes I would be more critical if it was a 100 million dollar project made by a professional because what the fuck do you mean you're a world-famous director and you cut the my name is nobody scene are you goddamn serious

i think the thing that is irking me about christopher nolan’s adaptation of the odyssey, that actually never did about EPIC, is what it claimed to be.

EPIC was made by a guy in his dorm room. it was casted on TikTok. it’s a concept album realized by independent animators on YouTube. inspiration was explicitly drawn from anime and video games. it could be emotional and dramatic at times, but you were watching it on YouTube through monochrome animatics at 2 FPS. Inaccuracies are excusable and (mostly) serve the story being told.

Christopher Nolan called it The Odyssey. It has an all-star cast, and has been posited as a fantastic film. Nolan literally filmed it entirely in IMAX and then was a snob about it being the only correct way to watch it. It takes itself definitively — and very very seriously.

And so. to cut it down. to use inaccurate costumes. to cut the goddamn nobody scene. to change the characters. to cut the gods’ role down. to reduce cunning odysseus to a simplistic action hero. to disrespect the homeland and culture of the story with litter and ignorance. is this even the odyssey anymore? or just a random action flick?

watched nolan's odyssey and i usually keep my reviews pretty short, so here goes

is it a good movie? neither yes nor no. it depends on the person.

if you're in it for a good experience and a beautiful movie, then you will enjoy it a lot.

if you're in it for historical/cultural accuracy and faithfulness to the original book, then you will NOT enjoy it.

i think we should stop expecting any adaptation to be 100 percent accurate at all times. you are free to criticise the movie for a myriad of reasons and it should be criticised. it's a giant movie from a famous director, there are high expectations that he has to reach.

in the end, that was a white man directing a movie about a culture and history he knows too little about to truly comprehend. it's a very pretty movie, with beautiful imagery, awesome effects, great choreography, and camera work. but it's not a good adaptation. don't expect it to be.
