Bella, darling, you are an incredible young woman, stronger than most I know, and we may not understand everything about each other but you are a delight to be around and we wouldnât trade you for the world. I will never understand people who donât drink coffee. How do you even function without coffee? How you donât look like a zombie without it? Tell me your secret.
Itâs actually very easy, the trick is that you either go to bed at a decent hour, or if you canât do that, you just complain a lot about how tired you are.

A smile creeped on Tomâs face as Catherine seemed to be⊠shy? Admittedly, he felt a bit like he was back in high school and courting a girl. Trying to get her to wear his letterman jacket. Noticing that she changed the subject without commenting on the original topic, he grinned, letting it slide. âYouâre right, I donât really know what interests you or what doesnât. So why donât you take a seat and tell me about it?â he said, sitting on the couch and patting the spot next to him.Â
For a few moments there, Catherine was taken aback a little. Not many people were interested in her, genuinely, mainly because she worked really hard to either blend in or hide behind a thick wall of deflecting humor. And she was mostly fine with people leaving her alone. But someone was asking, someone wanted to know, and she wasnât sure what to do with that. A little hesitantly, she joined Tom on the couch, now also completely aware that it was the closest she had been, alone, to a man in forever, really. And while the realization made her slightly uneasy,it somehow made her curious and engaged. A man who was interested in hearing from her? Such creatures still existed? âI... that is a very vast question. Youâre not going easy on me, are you?â she frowned, concentrating on it a little. What did interest her? âWell I -Donât laugh, please-â she interrupted herself, grabbing his arm out of reflex. âBut I do love astrology. Oh donât laugh please.âÂ

What made you want to leave England?
Not knowing better? I wanted to be a good, supportive wife, didnât pan out. Wanted to be a good mother and not uproot my child, so I stayed.Â

âReally?â Tom asked, raising an eyebrow and also surprised at her honestly. Though, a lot of people did seem to trust Tom. He was always told that there was something about him. âThat must be very hard. You are very brave,â he said, putting his hand on her arm in a respectful way. âHey! You never know. Iâm sure that somethingâs had to happen. Though⊠now that you mention it, I suppose not much has happened with me. Iâve just been working. Iâm sure nothing that would interest you.âÂ
Catherineâs head fell a little forward, prompting a curtain of red hair to fall around her face and hopefully hide the sudden redness of her face. She had never been good with compliments, let alone some from a kind and attractive man. Maybe he wouldnât notice if she changed the subject really quick. âNow, how do you know what interests me or doesnât, uh?â she defiantly asked, half joking, half serious.Â

âI can only hope youâre right. Iâm not sure that I would know what to do. I donât think that I could be in your place. Mothers are so strong. Itâs truly admirable,â Tom commented. He looked over at his couch and put his hands on his hips. âIkea? Huh, I donât know⊠it came with the house, to be honest,â he said, shrugging a bit. âI suppose thatâs not the interesting answer you were looking for,â he laughed. Tom couldnât help but let out a smile and a soft laugh as she seemed obviously confused at his toast. He had never seen or read any of the Captain Underpants, but he was glad that his daughter was out having fun and he got to spend some adult time with Catherine. Taking a drink from his glass, he took a seat on the couch. âSo, how are you? How have you been?â
âOh god, weâre really not.â Catherine laughed âIf you knew how often Iâve cried myself to sleep.â She was surprised by her own honesty. Not many people managed to get close enough to the redhead to have her confide in them so openly, but over the years, Tom had chipped away ar her thick protective shell and made himself invaluable as one of her most trusted friend. âIâm good, Iâm... the same I always am you know me, nothing exciting ever happens to me. You?â

âSuppose that I have that to look forward to, huh?â he said, pursing his lips together a bit. He had to admit, he was always afraid he wasnât doing a good job. He was a single dad in his fifties with an adopted daughter. He dreaded the day that she shouted âI hate youâ in an argument. âDo you like it? I mean do you think it looked better in the other spot?â he asked, going to the kitchen and grabbing some glasses. âI do have cranberry juice. I love cranberry juice!â he said, pulling it out of the fridge. âTwo tall glasses of cranberry juice,â he said, handing her a glass and holding his own up for a cheers. âTo Captain Underpants!âÂ
âDonât worry too much,â Catherine smiled and squeezed Tomâs arm gently and reassuringly. âFathers and daughters have it easier than mother and daughters. Youâll be just fine, love.â The brit was usually great at dishing out advice and comforting words, but not at following them herself. âI mean, both seemed nice. I love the couch though, is it Ikea?â She followed him dutifully to the kitchen and accepted her glass with a smile. âThank you very much.â Her smile twisted into a slightly confused face at his sudden and strange toast, but she tapped her glass against his still. Why was everyone suddenly so strange and apparently really into this Captain underpants thing? It felt like something was missing from her mind. âTo... that.. if you say so...â she chuckled slightly.

âDoes she often walk away while cursing you out?â Tom asked, raising an eyebrow and looking at the red-headed British woman. âTheyâre good kids. I think theyâll be fine,â he said, standing aside so that she could make her way in. He thought about the last time she was there and if anything had changed. âYou know what, I think the couch was against that wall last time. Decided to mix it up. You know, a little feng shui,â he said. âCan I get you something to drink?â Â
âNot often, but it happens. Sheâs a teenage girl, Iâm her mum, itâs a thingâ she shrugged. The two of them were close most of the time, but Catherine had to admit they were far too similar in so many aspects and it wasnât always a great thing. She gave a look around and nodded. âThat  mustâve been it, yeah. Oh, uh, maybe just water? Unless you happen to have some cranberry juice?â

Erin was taking Dafne out to see a movie and Catherine was coming over to hang out. Erin and Catherine were one of the few people that Tom trusted the young girl with. Being a single dad of an adopted daughter from another countryâ he was pretty protective of her, but Catherine and Tom had been neighbors for a long time now and Erin had been the girls babysitter. Sliding a jacket on Dafneâs shoulders, he gave her some money for a ticket and snacks and ran a comb through her hair. Before he even realized it, Erin was there and they were running out the door. âHave a good time!â Tom shouted out after them, running his hand through his âbed-headâ style hair. He could tell that Catherine was confused, too. âYou know kids,â he said, leaning against the door frame. âI guess they just really love animated superheroes in their underwear,â he laughed. âCome on in, Catherine.â
âI...â Catherine looked at the two girls walking away, still trying to figure out what just happened and what had gotten into her daughter before she sighed and shrugged it off. Letting go wasnât her strength but she had to from time to time. âAs long as sheâs not cussing me out, I shouldnât worry, right?â She turned and smiled up to the man, following him inside. âDid you change something?â the woman asked, looking around. âO has it been too long since I came in here that I forgot what it looked like?â

The walk to their neighbourâs house was usually a very short one but for some reason, the teenage girl seemed more than in a hurry to get there. She even ran up a few feet ahead to get to the door first and knock before her mother could even reach it. If Catherine didnât know her daughter better, sheâd think she was hiding something. Maybe she just got really excited about Captain Underpants. By the time the redhead finally reached everyone else at the door, the two girls were already heading out apparently, and seeing her mother about to say something, Erin beat her to the punch. âWe will be careful crossing the streets, yes I have enough money, and I have my phone, and even a first aid kit. Weâre good, weâre going, see you after the movie!â It all left the older woman completely baffled, still standing on the porch. âWhat just happened? Did I miss something?â she asked Tom, utterly confused.

I absolutely love that my customers come in the shop with sunglasses and act so undercover like they are doing something bad. Like why hide the fact that your buying anal balls for you and your boyfriend. Oh I swear, itâs the most hilarious thing ever and the questions they ask too. Some questions are so priceless.

Yeah but, itâs a small town. People gossip. I get that sex is a normal natural part of life not to be ashamed of, but I also wouldnât want to, say run into my daughterâs teacher buying something private, or seeing me do so. I mean, I get it.

Oh god, what happened to the days where you just borrowed a tenner from your parents and went to dance, no pressure? Why does it seem so complicated now? You have to be accompanied or youâre frowned at, you canât have worn the dress before or theyâll know...
