Vulcan calligraphy project!

My bestie is writing a David/Saavik fic and had the idea that the marriage contract would be written down in calligraphy. Whether this is an elaborate pretext to make me happy by giving me calligraphy to do, the world will never know, but I did it. The translation is mostly cadged from Reddit (V'Los's comment struck me as the most correct; their extrapolations of what the passive voice should be are probably correct) with additions of my own to fill out the text.

As someone who was alive when Bob Ross (and William Alexander before him — that’s where the approach is from) was on PBS, I can 100% testify that you can paint along with him.

You may need to learn how to set up your paints and such… but this is what people did, live, while the show aired. That’s what the show was for. I had family members create lovely works of art they enjoyed, which I still have on my walls, because William Alexander and Bob Ross both said:

SCREW METICULOUS CLASSICAL ART PRACTICES — JUST GRAB A PALETTE KNIFE AND BIG OLD BRUSH AND PAINT!

They freed a whole generation of people who were taught to paint detail and realism and exact representation of reality — people who largely gave up this kind of thing because it got tedious.

I watched the joy of family members as they rediscovered art as a messy fun spontaneous half hour activity.

This *is* genuinely impressive but also makes me feel old because my second reaction (after being impressed) was, "Well, yes, you couldn't pause PBS back then either." 😂

One of my very earliest memories is of sitting on the living room floor watching PBS and my mom asking if I wanted to walk to the bus stop with her to get my sister (I'm pretty sure the bus stop was within sight of our front door and also in the olden days you could leave your small child home alone for <5 minutes without inciting a moral panic) and I asked if we could pause my show and she was like "no, that's not...how that works." If we assume my sister was in kindergarten and I hadn't started preschool yet, that would have been late 1993, on the tail end of The Joy of Painting's original run.
