We toss out over 80 pounds of textiles each year. These textiles are often made of plastic materials (polyester, nylon), made in unethical conditions, dyed with harsh dyes that often get put into the rivers, etc. Even a single cotton shirt releases carbon emissions and uses tons of water.
So the best thing to prevent the unsustainable growth of the fashion industry is to make sure that your clothing lasts as long as possible. To do so, mending clothing is a must. So here are some resources to help you learn how to do various things, such as sewing a button, to tailoring clothes, or even upcycling old clothing into new styles.
* How to sew on three different types of button
* How to hand sew on a patch on a torn pair of jeans
* How to sew up a hole in an old shirt
* How to sew a simple T-shirt
* How to upcycle old clothing into new clothing
* More upcycle and sewing techniques
* How to repair a damaged sock
* How to do an invisible stitch
* 3 different stitches to work with for different results
* How to make a T-shirt smaller so it fits you better
* How to make repairs to your shoes
These are just a few of the things that you can do in order to make sure that your clothing lasts for a long time. Nobody wants to keep buying new clothing, as it is expensive and wasteful.
So making alterations to your clothing, or fixing small holes hen you see them can be hugely beneficial to your wallet, to garment workers, and to the environment in the long term.
The ghost of Christmas past will visit you one night. You will hear chains scratching against the floor as they approach you. They know what you did and what you do to cover it up. They’re only doing what those poor soles would have done decades ago.
Fym “poor souls”, if anything I’m the one dragging people down. I get people for murder. They face trial. I’m avenging the ghosts of the fallen. I’m not guilty of anything.

Okay. Here are my hegemonic monogamy-poisoned polyamory on Erid headcanons (thanks to Mr. Ortiz for the 'arranged marriage between Rocky and Adrian' headcanon, you have given us much to feast on, it's like a whalefall every day with this guy):
Arranged marriages are the norm on Erid, but unlike on Earth, these marriages are strictly for producing children and/or strengthening alliances between families. And I do mean strictly. Romance is STRONGLY discouraged between arranged partners, perhaps even to the extent of being outlawed historically.
For such a long-lived species, keeping a stable child-rearing situation is imperative. Especially considering they tend to have five kids at a time, and every single member of the species is constantly multitasking and can't focus for longer than like, twenty minutes. I think child-rearing is mostly likely a communal activity (like it has been on Earth historically), and I think that platonic, non-passionate relationships are encouraged in these situations to maximise chances for a positive upbringing.
Now anyone can tell you that platonic relationships are not necessarily non-passionate or non-violent, but that's the fun thing about culture, it doesn't always map onto reality - the idea of raising children in calm/peaceful environments is more important than, y'know, it actually happening, and the idea that platonic relationships are better for children is more widespread than the acknowledgement that Man I Think It Depends.
So: platonic relationships are the ideal for raising children. This also (in theory) allows for communal raising to be more streamlined and easy to implement. Because you have your Designated Secondary Parental Figure, your extended family members, and your friends. That's who is allowed to help raise your child. What more could you need? So far so good-ish!
But then that inevitably creates a hierarchy wherein romantic relationships are ... not frowned upon, per se. But they're not supposed to happen within the context of raising a family. They're supposed to happen completely removed from it. I don't think you can structure a society around platonic relationships without allowing for the reality of romance - well, I mean, you could. They're aliens. But we're not going to, for reasons of fun and angst - so I think what might end up happening is, once again taking a cue from human history, you do get romantic relationships ... so long as they don't interfere with your platonic family, much the same way that a lot of human societies looked the other way with regards to same-gender relationships as long as the participants were discreet and didn't endanger the hegemonic family structure in the society at the time. Y'know, like Chinese emperors, French princes, and English queens having their favourites, which were tolerated only as long as the royals kept popping out viable heirs and didn't flaunt it too much.
I think that this would lead to interesting situations where you might end up in an arranged marriage with someone and if you do fall in love with them, you're expected to keep it a secret! Because what are you, some kind of freak? Trying to destablise the family structure for your weird obsession with another person? Who you're having kids with?! Don't you know that could mess up your kids for life?!
You get where I'm going with this. Being romantically involved with the parent of your children is some weird pervert shit on Erid.
If we accept that arranged marriages also have the goal of stabilising long-term alliances, it would add to the taboo, because it's not only the children you affect, it's the wider community. If that relationship goes south, or the romance ends, you're putting everyone else through your selfish feelings about it. Better to keep the relationship stable, platonic, and mutually non-passionate.
All of this to say: I think that the term "mate" on Erid may have a specific meaning - "secondary parent of my (future or current) children, with whom I share custody and a mutually platonic relationship."
And I think. That Adrian and Rocky might have fallen in love anyway.
I think that they held off on having kids for that reason. The social pressure is probably quite high to avoid having children if you're romantically involved. And I think that Rocky confessing to Grace that he misses Adrian the most from Erid is a very vulnerable thing that he only mentioned once he understood that on Earth, romance and child-rearing aren't segregated things, and in fact are most often expected. I think that he thought he wouldn't have to explain the whole mates vs. romance thing and so he felt safe telling somebody - not just anybody either, but his best friend and saviour - the truth about the person he loves.
And here we go into grockdrian territory:
Of course, all of this happens prior to Rocky realising that 1. Grace WILL be returning to Erid with him, and he hasn't explained the whole romance vs. mates thing, and 2. Rocky is falling for Grace, whose culture doesn't seem to do multiple romances (Grace is not fully queer literate. Living in San Francisco gave him the bare minimum but nothing else, he hasn't mentioned polyamory to Rocky), so Grace probably wouldn't want to be with Rocky if Rocky's still with Adrian, which he definitely does want to be, let alone be with Rocky AND Adrian, and 3. A romance with Grace probably WOULD be accepted by the majority of Erid since they're planet saviours and all, and they can't have children, even with Grace's gross human body, but that would mean hiding his relationship with Adrian, which was painful enough when it was just the two of them.
Replying to these replies from @tawghasa because I LOVE THESE QUESTIONS:
Coming back to this because like… How much flack does Rocky get for his devotion to Grace?
Romantic relationships are seen as inherently unstable.
Keeping Grace alive on Erid is not just expensive and difficult, it's prioritising the needs of a single person (an alien!) over so many other things.
Not only that, but it requires teams of specialists. A bad romance might disrupt others in the family group, but this interstellar romance is disrupting careers and industries at a never before seen scale!
This goes against Eridian values and norms so hard it's insane.
Humans have a shorter lifespan than some pets.
Rocky, wtf are you doinggg??
Romantic relationships are seen as inherently unstable! Like, YMMV. I think cultural variation plays a role here - I suspect in some cultures, romantic relationships are highly stigmatised in almost all forms (like ... Mormons of Erid.) While in other cultures, romantic relationships are normalised and even celebrated to a degree, like progressive pockets on Earth. But in general! Romance is one of those things that's like, okay, but you don't NEED a romantic relationship. It's ultimately a bit of an indulgence. What do you mean your romantic relationship needs legal recognition? What do you mean you want a romance and NOT a mate?! All this to say: romantic relationships are more apt to fall apart or end mutually on Erid because the social pressure is SO strong not to bother pursuing them for more than a dalliance.
The following works under the assumption that it's quickly known that Rocky has fallen in love with the alien, and that Adrian is aware of, and at least somewhat okay with this:
I can see a lot of Erid being like oh! Rocky is ... in a relationship with the alien? Presumably it's just physical. Like Rocky's just in it for the exoticism of it all, the idea that he's dedicated himself to the actual ideal of romance would be insane. Good for him! It will fall apart in time, but that's fine, they went through hell together and Rocky thankfully has a platonic mate to keep them on the straight and narrow ❤️
(Adrian is in hell. Adrian is in hell. Adrian is in hell.)
Big lefties/progressives on Erid are like holy shit. This is the cultural moment we've been waiting for. A romantic love that SAVED TWO STARS AND BILLIONS OF PEOPLE. Take that conservatives!! Romantic relationships ARE valid!! And it's not like Rocky's in a relationship with their MATE, like come on it's not even that bad!!
(Adrian is in hell. Adrian is in hell. Adrian is in hell.)
Conservatives on Erid are apoplectic. What do you MEAN your jeopardised our entire saving our planet mission for a piece of orifice? Insanity! Lock them up! Why, that alien's practically a pebble!!
Anyway the last one is the only one Adrian bothers responding to. Adrian explains very calmly that the alien is an adult, its species is simply short-lived. Given that it helped save their planet, maybe people could LAY. OFF.
And at this point Adrian sits Rocky down and is like hey. So. We need to think of some damn good reasons for people to like the alien because your relationship with it is basically bigger news than our planet being saved and the existence of intelligent aliens at all. And I am willing to keep our relationship a secret because we always agreed that it would be necessary, but I don't think I can do that AND keep defending your relationship with Grace without. Exploding. Especially given that I am being put into the role of your sensible, platonic, even-handed, patient, saintly fucking mate!!
So! The following carefully considered reasons and arguments are presented to various thrums by Rocky:
The alien is the only human they are going to get their claws on for the next like, thirty human years minimum, and therefore they should keep him alive to pick his brain about Planet Earth. Yes they have Earth thinking machines but any culture and history expert will tell you that you want first person evidence and information!!!
It would behoove the planet to keep him in good shape for as long as possible so that when they DO eventually make contact with Earth, they can truthfully say they kept the alien alive and happy as a gesture of goodwill.
Planet Earth might die. They were in worse shape than Erid and nobody knows if the beetles made it. They need to keep the alien alive because it might be an endangered species.
And as anyone can see! NONE of those reasons have anything to do with Rocky's possible relationship with the alien!! So romance has nothing to do with any of this!! Yes, Rocky spent so long sitting by the alien's side while he was comatose that Rocky collapsed into an involuntary sleep three times longer than average, but that's just because Rocky is soooooo dedicated to ... peace and goodwill between Earth and Erid!! And also you can't judge anything Grace says or does regarding romance because he's a human and humans do things differently so let's just leave it at that okay!!!
Everyone is like. Uh.
Adrian seconds everything Rocky just said and, by some miracle. They get away with it.
The really heartbreaking thing about this headcanon, though, is that Adrian and Rocky have to keep their true relationship a secret, AND. People probably don't mind Rocky staying with Grace for the rest of Grace's life. It isn't that long for a romantic relationship by an Eridian's lifespan. They find it weird that Grace stuck with one person his whole life, but hey, aliens have different cultural standards. Romance is actually super important to humans, how weird!
They have no idea that Rocky would have stayed with Grace until the end of both their lives if he could've. They have no idea what sacrifices Adrian made to see Rocky as happy as he could possibly be. They have no idea that Rocky carries the weight of guilt from putting Adrian through all of this for the rest of both their lives.
ANYWAY I COULD TALK ABOUT THIS AU FOREVER, but I'm already writing a fic where Adrian is Not okay with the alien, so I'll save it!
PHM really got me tearing up while reading the Wikipedia page for rye rn.
Because the name Grace had symbolic significance, I thought Ryland would too.
Ryland means “from the rye land”, so I looked up rye to see if it was more interesting than I thought at first glance.
Rye (Secale cereale) is a grass grown extensively as a grain, a cover crop and a forage crop. It is grown principally in an area from Eastern and Northern Europe into Russia. It is much more tolerant of cold weather and poor soil than other cereals, making it useful in those regions…
From the Wikipedia page for rye.
It got me thinking about how my primary touchstone for rye is rye bread. Then in turn, bread is often a symbol for life and in the Bible, bread can be interpreted as a symbol for God’s grace. Then with the definitions for grace (ie “god-given help or kindness”, benevolence, or even mercy)…
You mean to tell me, Ryland Grace means “from the land of cold weather and poor soil, the gift of benevolence and life”. 😭
A theme park design based off the wonderful movie: Encanto! The process was tough but at the end it was worth it :’)) This project is finally done! WOOHOO!!
There also needs to be a button for “this is the 5000th time I’ve read your fic because I’m having a horrible day and this is the only thing in the world that always brings me happiness.”
Honestly though, comments like that are gold to me. I love to write and a comment telling me that something I’ve done has improved someone’s life even in a small way? That’s impact. We live in societies that tell us over and over we have no value and nothing we do is ever good enough. So for someone to post a comment telling us that we improved their lives with our stories? That tells us our effort had value. We writers set out to improve the world in tiny ways, offering random acts of kindness in the form of a few minutes’ entertainment, and comments tell us we’ve achieved that little goal.
You can totally come back and leave a comment under that comment a year later! I’m glad to know you are still enjoying it and want to know if you’re doing okay.
There is no higher compliment than a re-read. The longer the time that has passed, the higher it is. It means a story resonated and stayed with someone.
Spin the wheel again. That’s who’s trying to protect you.
(If you have zero idea about a name you got, spin until you see someone you recognize.)
Are you safe?
Absolutely not. I'm dead. 100% dead.
I might stay alive, but it'll be a really close thing.
I'll take some hits, for certain, but I should be okay in the end.
A few attacks might get through, but nothing concerning.
The attacker might be able to get in one lucky hit. If that.
I am the opposite of worried. I'm 100% safe.
…Look. I've tried picturing this. But I honestly don't know how to answer.
